This will be a discussion of CMS and AMA coding and documentation guidelines as they relate to emergency medicine. It will include basic E&M fundamentals plus advanced coding and billing issues learned from 20+ years of coding ED charts and audit defense experience.
CMS released the Final Rule for 2022 on November 2nd. In addition to setting the fee schedule for 2022 Medicare payments, the rule adds or updates policies related to coding, billing and documentation for physician services. The 2,100+ page document addressed a wide variety of issues related to the Medicare program. The most noteworthy for emergency medicine are modifications to the performance and documentation requirements for shared services when a Physician's Assistant or Nurse Practitioner is involved in treating a patient in the emergency department.
Coding for moderate sedation in the ED has very specific documentation requirements. This discussion will explain what need to be documented for the coder to select the correct moderate sedation code. Feel free to direct any questions or comments to ercoder@ercoder.com
