Lindsey Ewing (IG's The Prehospitalist) joins us to discuss updates and questions surrounding the EMS management of traumatic arrest. Sure, we must address the "reversible" causes, but what about ACLS/compressions/epinephrine? Which patients are exceptions to the rules? Lindsey had a tough case, asked some hard questions, and will provide solid answers—our favorite recipe for a jam-packed educational session. REFERENCES 1. Witt, C. E., Shatz, D. V., Robinson, B. R. — “Ahhh, how we love to feel loved—yet, how easily we forget to love ourselves! It is my experience as a psychotherapist and healer that, even in the case of the most enlightened and evolved, the search for feeling love becomes external—through others or through something material or achievable: “I need a hug,” I will hear, or “I need a lover.” People will say, “When I get that new car, I will feel good”; “If I get that new outfit, I am taken care of”; or “When I get promoted, I will feel better about myself.” I am not saying that any of those requests or desires are unreasonable. External needs are very valid and necessary. What I am referring to is our sole dependency on them. Time and time again we hear that love is within us. Of course, we need to believe this and understand it before we can go on a quest to find it within. This quest is no different than the one we embark upon while searching for love from another soul—except the traveling and exploring involves looking at ourselves. How do we do this? For starters, through meditation. If that seems too scary, as it involves being with your own thoughts and discovering yourself, start with visualization.” Valeria interviews Aileen Nealie — She is the author of “Visualize Yourself: Designing the Outcome of Your Life, One Issue at a Time.” Ms. Nealie became a licensed psychotherapist in 2003 and quickly opened her private practice in Newport Beach, CA. On her quest to a more holistic approach, she became a Diplomate in Comprehensive Energy Psychology (DCEP) in 2008, awarded by ACEP (www.EnergyPsych.org). From 2010-11, she hosted a radio talk show with Voice America called Holistic Answers to Mental Health, which quickly became part of the top 4 most listened to talk shows. Most recently, she has restarted Holistic Answers to Mental Health, now through YouTube. Having been highly intuitive since childhood, Aileen Nealie comes from a family lineage of healers. After being diagnosed with Fibromyalgia in 2012, her continued holistic journey had her encounter an unknown energy healing method in the US called cosmoenergy. She tried it for herself and felt an unexplainable shift in her energy, and she realized that working with this method was her destiny. She was fortunate to work with two of the most powerful teachers and progressors: Dmitrii Voevodin, founder and director of the International School Kosmoenergetiki, and Igor Andreev, Head of the School of Cosmoenergetics. She now has access to over 300 healing frequencies and provides services in both English and Spanish, through video, through photograph or in person. Ms. Nealie also works with those who aspire to become practitioners and coaches and initiates them onto these healing frequencies. Her established Center for Tranquility and Restoration in the city of Santa Clarita, ran from 2010-2022. In 2019 Aileen was named as one of Los Angeles' Top 10 therapists. Since 2023 her practice relocated and All Things Holistic is now in Thousand Oaks, CA. She has been a presenter at the LA Conscious Expo and has also served as a guest on various podcasts, on Mindalia TV from Spain and on Rompiendo el Silencio Los Angeles TV Vision Latina. She is a published author on the topic of visualization with her book, Visualize Yourself: Designing the Outcome of Your Life: One Issue at a Time. All of these methods are offered through her holistic psychotherapy practice. To learn more about Aileen Nealie and her work, please visit: https://aileennealie.com/

Nutrition has vast effects on individual and population health—impacting obesity rates, chronic conditions, and quality of life. Yet despite its proven, wide-reaching effects, nutrition remains largely overlooked as a social determinant of health. Dr. Livia Santiago-Rosado, MD, Commissioner of the Dutchess County (NY) Department of Behavioral and Community Health, joins Dr. Enrique Enguidanos to discuss this important topic and how communities can work together to make small tweaks and big impacts. Bio:Dr. Santiago-Rosado has been Commissioner of the Dutchess County Department of Behavioral Health since her appointment in December 2021. Following completion of a BA in Biological Anthropology summa cum laude from Harvard University, she attended medical school at Columbia University. Having completed residency training at Mount Sinai and Elmhurst Hospitals in New York City, has practiced Emergency Medicine in New York for over two decades, working in emergency departments (EDs) in diverse settings including urban, suburban, rural, public and private. She holds an academic appointment as Distinguished Visiting Professor at New York Medical College and Adjunct Associate Professor at the Touro School of Osteopathic Medicine.Dr. Santiago has dedicated her career to working with and enhancing the care of underserved populations. Prior to moving to Dutchess County, she spent 15 years as a clinical leader in New York City's public hospital system, Health + Hospitals (H+H), where she helped found a novel ED Care Management program for highly vulnerable patients and the first ED-based observation unit in H+H. Prior to her current appointment, Dr. Santiago was the Medical Director and inaugural Chair of Emergency Medicine at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie, NY. Dr. Santiago is an active member of the New York State Association of County Health Officials (NYSACHO) and sits on its Emerging Issues committee. She also currently serves as a Councilor representing New York at the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) and has served two terms on the Board of Directors for the New York Chapter of ACEP. She also serves on ACEP practice committees at both the State and national levels. Throughout her career, she has led and participated in policy development, education, informatics and data analytics, quality improvement, change management, and research in Emergency Medicine, social determinants, and population health at the local, state, and national levels. Lastly, since local health commissioners in New York are required to have a master's degree in public health (or related field) in addition to a medical doctorate, she is currently enrolled in the MPH program at the University at Albany.

There's no getting around the surges and potential chaos of an emergency department. The good news is that these events are predictable, you know they're going to happen, just not when. So how do you prepare and then navigate the storm once you're in the thick of it?In today's episode, we start with a discussion with Thom Mayer, MD exploring strategies to steel yourself for the inevitable chaos, underscoring the importance of maintaining a positive, agentic, proactive mindset. Drawing parallels to General Theodore Roosevelt Jr.'s decisive leadership on D-Day, the discussion highlights the critical need for quick, confident decision-making. A key focus is on the concept of "energy packets," a methodical approach to managing the cognitive overload in the ED by strategically allocating mental resources to specific tasks. We also delve into understanding individual stress thresholds and how to manage stress without succumbing to a sense of helplessness. In the second half of the episode, Chris Hicks, MD gives his approach to managing high patient volumes, communication while managing critical patients, and how to address a direct challenge in the resus bay. Guest Bios:Chris Hicks, MDChris is an emergency physician and trauma team leader at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto. He has innovated in several areas of resuscitation and psychological skills, including mental practice, stress inoculation training. These days he enjoys a quieter life, free from the problematic corporate jib-jab of academic deliverables. In 2018, as a partial rebuke of the status quo, Chris co-created and chaired resusTO, an inter-professional simulation-based resuscitation conference in Toronto with international acclaim. In 2020, he co-founded Advanced Performance Healthcare Design, consulting with hospitals and industry using simulation to inform the design of systems, spaces and teams. Chris is an avid speaker and lecturer, staunch #FOAMed supporter, occasional runner and cyclist, fledgling boxer, semi-retired pianist, and proud father of three lunatic boys.Thom Mayer, MDDr. Mayer is the Medical Director for the NFL Players Association, Clinical Professor of Emergency Medicine at George Washington University and a Senior Lecturing Fellow at Duke University. Dr. Mayer was named the ACEP Outstanding Speaker of the Year in the second year the award was given and has twice been named ACEP's “Over-the-Top” award winner. Since my presentation of Empower Energy Technique (EET) on June 4, 2023 during the ACEP conference, I've been curious about how well EET has been working out for them.I've heard from several skilled energy medicine practitioners who began applying EET in their practices. One of them who emailed me about his use of EET is Mark Bottinick, LCSW, who has been using energy medicine techniques since the 1990s and was the first person who taught me Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT).He's been using EET with great success and came on my podcast to talk about some of his positive experiences with EET. It's been a couple of years since that infamous ACEP workforce study was released which forecasted an alarming surplus of ER doctors by the year 2030. Like seemingly all things relating to the emergency medicine space, the estimate doesn't seem to be playing out as expected. If anything, if trends continue, we could be living in a world where the exact opposite is true – possibly an undersupply of ER docs. On today's episode, we'll discuss what a recent expert panel of ER doctors presented on the future of the workforce, the factors that went into arriving at their findings, and what this could mean for you.

#50: Matt Shindeldecker defines himself as a CrossFit L2 Coach, the owner of 13 year affiliate CrossFit Crave, and most proudly as a trauma survivor. When Matt and Debbie first opened their gym, CrossFit Crave, they had no way of knowing the transformative effect it would have on their community. But they decided if they could just change one life, the community would be a better place. Fueled by that goal, Debbie's background in trauma-informed education, and Matt's healing experience in CrossFit, they started a juvenile fitness program. In the program, they connect young folks to a supportive community aimed at bridging mental health, wellness, and CrossFit programming. Six years later, the program has the lowest recidivism rate in the state of Ohio. To share the knowledge that led to the program's success, Matt and Debbie launched CrossFit's Affiliate Community Empowerment Program (ACEP)*. ACEP's goal is "to arm affiliates with the tools and education they need to create and host programs that serve people who have experienced trauma by improving their health and fitness, and helping them find a community." In the episode, we discuss CrossFit, Trauma, ACEP* and more: Matt's lived experience with substance use disorder and his personal recovery journey, How Matt's first introduction to CrossFit changed his whole perception; it was the first time in his life he felt like he was seen for him, not as someone with SUD, The importance of fostering community and how to be patient as resource for youth, while setting healthy boundaries, The 3 pillars that uphold their program: community, equality, and consistency; paired with trauma-informed coaching. Learn more about CrossFit Crave: https://www.crossfitcrave.com/*Update: Since the recoding of this podcast, the ACEP program including the Trauma Training have been cut in the downsizing at CrossFit HQ. Matt and Debbie are continuing the Juvenile Program and the Trauma Training independently. We're all born with individual rhythms that go beyond the influence of our genes and upbringing. The Five Elements is one of the systems that we can use to understand our rhythms. The system originated in ancient Chinese medicine 2,000 years ago–when scholars theorized that the universe is composed of five forces: water, wood, fire, earth, and metal. Our guest Dondi Dahlin will help us understand the five elements better and how we can use it to transform ourselves. Dondi Dahlin is an award-winning public speaker and has been seen on Hay House, Shift Network, OMEGA Institute, Mindvalley, and ACEP. She is also a popular teacher spreading Eden Energy Medicine and the Five Elements through international workshops. She co-authored The Little Book of Energy Medicine and her book The Five Elements became a best-seller when it was released in 2016. Dondi is also an internationally-acclaimed dancer, actress, and teacher in television, film, and stage for over 30 years. In this interview, Dondi explains the personality types represented by the five elements of water, wood, fire, earth, and metal and how we can use them to stay in balance physically, mentally, spiritually, and emotionally. She also talks about how we can use it to improve our relationships with others.
