“ I think these resources are good because it gives you the language and the tools to do something that doesn't necessarily feel right,” says Stephanie Wittels Wachs, author of Last Day. Steph also hosts a podcast by the same name and is the cofounder and CEO of Lemonada Media (the podcast network I've been with for the last year or so). I'm so grateful to Steph for sharing a more nuanced and compassionate perspective on addiction, and for creating a vital guide for living with addiction, for connecting with loved ones who have this disease, for saving more lives—and for evolving our culture more broadly, which is so needed. Also for the warmth and humor with which Steph does this all! I've covered addiction a lot on Pulling the Thread, so I'm compiling all the resources (including Steph's book) in the show notes on my site: eliseloehnen.com. I'm insanely impressed by Stephanie Wittels Wachs, not just because she's the co-founder and CEO of Lemonada Media, an award-winning podcast network with a mission to "make life suck less,” but because of her ability to use humor and wit to get through loss. She lost her brother, writer-producer-comedian Harris Wittels, to the opioid crisis and has now written multiple books on the topic. This raw exploration of grief is also a manual for anyone else struggling with how to help an addicted loved one. Our conversation ranged from entrepreneurship and what it takes to start something new to her profound struggles in the aftermath of sibling loss. Hosted on Acast. Author Bio: Luanne Rice is the New York Times bestselling author of thirty-nine novels, including three YA novels, that have been translated into thirty languages. Until Midnight is her most recent. Rice's books often center on love, family, nature, and the sea. The Beautiful Lost deals with teen depression, something Rice experienced herself.  She is an advocate for mental health awareness, a participant in McLean Hospital's Deconstructing Stigma: A Change in Thought Can Change a Life Several of Rice's novels have been adapted for television, including Crazy in Love for TNT, Blue Moon for CBS, Follow the Stars Home and Silver Bells for Hallmark Hall of Fame, and Beach Girls for a mini-series on Lifetime.  Rice contributed a monologue to Motherhood Out Loud, a play that premiered at Hartford Stage Company and was performed Off-Broadway and at the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles. In 2002, Connecticut College awarded Rice an honorary degree.  Her papers are located in the college's Special Collections Library. A profile of Rice appeared in Connecticut College Magazine, Fall 2014. Visit her links page to find out more about the causes and organizations that offer support and work for a better world. About the Book: Until Midnight is the thrilling new novel from the Amazon Charts and New York Times bestselling author Luanne Rice (Last Night, The Shadow Box and Last Day). The Reid Brothers are back… Rhode Island's picturesque Ocean House is the perfect setting for Kate Woodward and Conor Reid's fairy-tale wedding weekend. But there may not be a happily ever after. When an old friend of Conor's disrupts the rehearsal dinner and reveals a blindsiding secret—a claim that she and Conor share a child—Kate calls off the wedding, thinking things can't get any worse. Until the next morning, when that same woman is found with her throat slashed. As investigators close in and suspicions mount, the evidence points to a mystery deeper than anyone imagined. The soundproof boat with telltale signs of something sinister. The mansion on the hill that lures in young girls and doesn't let them go. A secret society whose members might be more familiar than not. And the truth of the dead woman's past that draws Kate and Conor into a nightmare.   For more information about Luanne Rice, visit luannerice.com, and for more on Deborah Goodrich Royce and her new release, Best Boy, along with information about the Ocean House Author Series, visit deborahgoodrichroyce.com

At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn.'” Matthew 13:30 Until the Harvest Some people believe that the weed Jesus talks about in this parable is the darnel plant. It looks like wheat, grows like wheat, and produces seeds that are similar to wheat. Not surprisingly, then, it has earned the name “false wheat.” But there is one way to distinguish the darnel plant from wheat. When it ripens, its seed pod turns black. The wheat pod is a golden brown. True and fake become apparent at the harvest. Jesus promises that everything will work out at the harvest, in other words, on the Last Day of this world’s existence. That’s good for us to remember. Because it's easy to forget about the harvest. We can get so wrapped up in this life that we assume it will always be the growing season. Jesus reminds us that there will be a Last Day. On that day, the phone we own, the car we drive, and the house we live in will not matter. Keep an eye on the harvest. That means repenting of our sinful choices. For the times when all we wanted to do was blend in with the weeds rather than stand tall like wheat, we repent. We ask God to forgive us. But we also take comfort. The one who told this story is also the one who bled on a cross to take away our sins. The one who told this story wants you to rejoice in the fact that you are not a weed but wheat growing strong in the field of his kingdom. He also wants you to understand your role in the world. Share and live your faith. Rejoice in the love of your Savior. God has a plan for you. It all ends with you standing before him at the harvest, shining like the sun in the kingdom of your Father. Prayer: Lord God, always keep me in your hands and help me keep an eye to the harvest. Nourish my faith through your powerful Word and help me live my life of faith in joy. Amen. Where then did the weeds come from?’ “‘An enemy did this,’ he replied. “The servants asked him, ‘Do you want us to go and pull them up?' “‘No,’ he answered, ‘because while you are pulling the weeds, you may uproot the wheat with them.'” Matthew 13:27-29 Weeds and Wheat As a young boy, I once thought I would help my dad by taking care of some of the weeds in the garden. So, I went to work pulling out all the weeds that I found. Apparently, it never dawned on my young mind that weeds don’t grow four inches apart and in straight rows. Rather than weeding, I pulled up all the sweet corn that my dad had planted. God has great care for the plants that he is growing. He will not arbitrarily pull them up like an ignorant young boy. Instead, with a Father’s love, he cares for the plants in his garden. Purely by his grace, God has planted his Word into the hearts of his children. But what about the weeds? This is God’s field, and God’s field should be perfect. Neat row after row of wheat should be growing in rich soil without a single weed. Why does he allow the weeds to grow among the wheat? Why doesn’t he tear out the weeds and toss them from his garden? Jesus gives the answer. Because tearing out the weeds could hurt the wheat. So, wheat and weeds grow together in this world. We may look very much the same. God’s people and God’s enemies drive the same cars, shop at the same stores, and go to work in the same jobs. But at the harvest, on the Last Day of this world’s existence, all will be made clear. On that Day, wheat and weeds will be eternally separated. Until that day, what does the wheat do? Grow, rooted deeply in the Word of God. Stand up tall, living the faith that God has grown in your heart. And bear fruit, that the seed of the gospel reaches out to others. Prayer: Lord God, thank you for caring for me in the garden of this world. Help me to stand tall among the weeds of this world. Amen. Daily Devotions is brought to you by WELS. A full breakdown of the Nolan Wells case in the order it actually happened — every logged timestamp, every competing account, start to finish. Two piles of material come out of that exercise and they don't weigh the same. One is verifiable: departure and arrival times, a distress call to a towing company, a run back through Fort Bayou, a recovery time on Monday morning. The other is everything people have stacked on top of those numbers, and it's guesswork all the way down — well-informed in spots, but guesswork. The sequence hits the stretch of afternoon nobody has accounted for. It hits the night the family spent chasing belongings through houses that weren't eager to hand them over. It hits the empty photo roll his mother says shouldn't have been empty, and the friend who says nobody's photo roll had anything on it, because everyone was standing waist-deep in the Gulf. It hits the thirteen hours between a friend's late call for help and the first aircraft in the air, and gives that gap both the family's reading and the reasonable operational one.And it hits the morning Nolan's father went out on his own, before any agency arrived, and covered the exact water where his son would surface a day later.Images generated by AI have been circulating alongside the real material, which creates its own obstacle for anyone trying to follow this honestly. Tony Brueski doesn't resolve the contradictions, because they aren't resolved. He names them, gives each side its strongest form, and leaves the open questions open. More than sixty people have sat for interviews. There's still nothing official explaining how an eighteen-year-old ended up where he was found.END_LINKSJoin Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/ Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Nolan Wells went to Horn Island on the Fourth of July with a group of friends. They came back. He didn't. Two days later, his body was pulled from the water by a park ranger — and the people closest to him started offering different accounts of what happened. The Wells family says his Snapchat data was wiped after his death. The FBI is running forensics on his phone. Over sixty witnesses have been interviewed. Death threats linked to the case are under separate investigation. And the friends who left Nolan behind on a federally protected island without water or transportation have given investigators stories that contradict each other.Jennifer Coffindaffer, a retired FBI Special Agent, joins Tony and Robin to examine the cracks forming between the friends' public statements and the facts investigators are piecing together. She addresses the Snapchat allegation directly — whether it constitutes evidence of a cover-up or whether there are plausible explanations — and what it means that the FBI is involved but maintains the local sheriff has jurisdiction despite Horn Island being federal land. The case is being investigated as a death — not yet classified as a crime. But the distance between what the friends are saying and what the evidence appears to show is growing. Coffindaffer walks through what that gap means from an investigative standpoint and why the next thirty days may determine whether anyone is ever held accountable for leaving an eighteen-year-old alone on an island.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/ Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? In day 164 of the Jewish Inspiration Podcast, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe continues the Gate of Repentance in Orchos Tzaddikim. He presents the sixth inspiration for teshuvah: living with the constant awareness that one is “one foot in the grave.” A person should never delay repentance until old age, because death can come at any moment. Instead, one must be prepared at all times to face the Creator by living in purity, constantly examining one's actions, and eagerly seeking mitzvahs every single day.Rabbi Wolbe emphasizes the importance of balance — not living in constant fear, but maintaining a healthy, proactive mindset. He shares powerful personal stories, including his grandfather's humility in the diamond district and his own self-imposed boundaries (such as never visiting Las Vegas). The class concludes with the beginning of a discussion on the four types of teshuvah, starting with teshuvah ha-ba — complete repentance demonstrated when the same temptation returns and is resisted._____________This Podcast Series is Generously Underwritten by Peter & Becky BotvinRecorded at TORCH Centre in the Levin Family Studios (B) to a live audience on November 24, 2025, in Houston, Texas.Released as Podcast on July 15, 2026_____________This series on Orchos Tzadikim/Ways of the Righteous is produced in partnership with Hachzek.Join the revolution of daily Mussar study at hachzek.com.We are using the Treasure of Life edition of the Orchos Tzadikkim (Published by Feldheim)_____________Listen, Subscribe & Share: Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/jewish-inspiration-podcast-rabbi-aryeh-wolbe/id1476610783Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4r0KfjMzmCNQbiNaZBCSU7) to stay inspired! Share your questions at aw@torchweb.org or visit torchweb.org for more Torah content.  _____________About the Host:Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe, Director of TORCH in Houston, brings decades of Torah scholarship to guide listeners in applying Jewish wisdom to daily life.  To directly send your questions, comments, and feedback, please email: awolbe@torchweb.org_____________Support Our Mission:Our Mission is Connecting Jews & Judaism.
