Our conversation with poet, writer, and translator James Shea, whose extraordinary new collection of poems Last Day of My Face (University of Iowa Press, 2025), was recently published as a winner of the prestigious Iowa Poetry Prize. James Shea's work delights in word play and unexpected images with a voice set at and considering the edges of meaning. As you'll hear in our conversation, Shea draws from the traditions of haiku and The New York School, giving us humorous and elegiac meditations on our shared predicament as minds trying to make sense of emergency. Or, as Shea puts it at the start of the long poem, “Failed Self-Portrait,” which ends his new collection—and our conversation, “I've made a sort of makeshift / sense of ourselves…” What makes this conversation especially meaningful is that our recording was also a reunion; my colleague, Adult Services Librarian Stevie Noguchi, and I each had James Shea as a poetry professor when he taught in Chicago over a decade ago. Stevie joins me as co-host for this special episode. You'll also hear Shea's reflections on the art of translation, poetic lineage, and readings from the treasure trove of recent publications Shea has put out, as translator and editor, including: Applause for a Cloud (Black Ocean, 2025), Shea's translations of haiku by Japanese poet Sayumi Kamakura, The Routledge Global Haiku Reader (Routledge, 2023), an introduction to current issues within haiku studies, which Shea co-edited with Grant Caldwell, and, Moving a Stone: Selected Poems of Yam Gong (Zephyr Press, 2022), co-translated with novelist Dorothy Tse and introducing Hong Kong poet Yam Gong to English-language readers James Shea is associate professor and director of the creative and professional writing program at Hong Kong Baptist University. His previous poetry collections The Lost Novel (2014) and Star in the Eye (2008) were both published by Fence Books. You can check out titles by James Shea here at the Library as part of our Podcast Collection, featuring books and other materials by past guests of the show.

When Vanessa's family moved out of their Florida rental in 2001, they thought they were leaving the house's unsettling energy behind. For six months, she and her sisters had spotted shadowy figures in the hallway, but their parents brushed it off as “reflections.” On their final day, with the house nearly empty, Vanessa's mother stayed behind with her youngest daughter—only to hear the unmistakable sounds of all three girls laughing and running in the back bedroom… even though two of them were already at school. What happened next made even Vanessa's skeptical father believe something was in that house—and it wasn't their imagination. God demands nothing less than perfection and holiness from you in regard to His commandments (Ex. 20:1–17). Your only hope, then, is not in your own goodness but in the goodness of Christ, who did not come to destroy the Law and the Prophets, but to fulfill them for you. In Christ, your righteousness does indeed exceed that of the scribes and Pharisees. For you have been baptized into Christ's death and your sinful nature crucified. Therefore, he who has died has been freed from sin (Rom. 6:1–11). You are now raised with Christ to walk in newness of life and to share in His resurrection on the Last Day. Christ has brought you through the baptismal sea “out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery” (Ex. 20:2). Therefore, “consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus” (Rom. 6:11). Lectionary summary © 2021 The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod. Used by permission. http://lcms.org/worship
Nine years ago tomorrow, my son Alex died & every August 6th became the eternal last day. I hadn't found those words until now. The day before everything changed. The last day of “before.”This is a poem I wrote when I woke today—rising from the weight—where memory meets survival. Most days, I carry grief with grace. My soul is expanded. Alex is always with me. I now do work I never would've chosen—but know is the deepest calling of my life: walking with other grievers thru the wilderness of loss. But this day—& the one that follows—is different. The duality sharper. The air heavier. So I write. I speak. I survive—how I need. I hope that for you.The Eternal Last Daythe eve that always remembersI awoke this morning heavy— Heavy like an unrelenting fog, where nothing beyond the fade is seen. Heavy like the sadness that lives in my soul, a constant very best worst companion—never-ever leaving my side. Familiar is this painful comfort.I awoke this morning with the wish to end all wishing— to erase tomorrow from ever entering, oh those years ago. A wish flung—hurled—into the blackness of a bottomless well.I awoke with tears at the ready— ready to carry the unimaginable back down my face, on a well-carved path to my heart. One more day in this year—before another year is marked. One more day in the rest of mine.To be permanently heavy. To over-wish an impossible wish. To forever exist in the unimaginable. To wander with certainty through the wilderness of an enlightened soul.A harsh reality no one sees. The impossible undoing of today. To survive again today— & in the changeless worse, the unnamed tomorrow. To just survive.Lighter… hopeful… bearable— I know they must still live on the other side of this dripping fog— thick as sorrow, damp with memory, and yet just as deafeningly silent.A breath. An echo? Relief? Promise? Dreams? No. Yet—perhaps. And somehow still—impossibly believable they'll return. Just not this morning. Just not on this eternal last day.________________________________________________________________________________________Grief isn't all I am, but it will always be part of me. On days like this, it takes the lead. If you're on your own eternal last day, please know: there's no one way to survive. Say no. Be still. Binge TV. Garden. Cry. Create. You're not alone. I'm here. Alex is here. And this podcast, this community—it exists because connection always matters. Just survive. We'll carry the rest, together. —Melissa
August 5, 2025 Today's Reading: Colossians 3:1-11Daily Lectionary: 1 Samuel 19:1-24; Acts 28:1-15“For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.” (Colossians 3:3-4)In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. Springtime rolls around on the calendar, and you take a handful of pumpkin seeds, dig a hole in the garden, drop the seeds in the earth, and bury them. It's a funeral of sorts. The seed dies in the earth, but there's life hidden in the seed as well. Before long, the seed sprouts, vines grow, leaves burst out, and that first orange pumpkin appears. This annual gardening pattern is a picture of what Paul teaches us in Colossians. Being the Master Gardener that he is, God likes to hide things as well, burying them in the ordinary things of life. On Sunday morning your pastor—and fellow sinner/saint—stands before the congregation uses ordinary human words, sentences, and grammar, and yet hidden in those words is a gracious declaration of Good News: “In the stead and by the command of my Lord I forgive you all your sin in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” Later on in the Divine Service, you approach the altar, kneel, open your mouth, and reach out your hand to receive a plain, ordinary wafer of bread, and you drink from a cup full of wine. And yet, hidden in these earthly things is more than meets the eye: Jesus' Body and Blood and his promise of forgiveness. The same is true in Holy Baptism. The pastor takes good old H2O from a faucet, pours it in a bowl, splashes and empties it over your head. And hidden in and with the water is God's promise, pardon, and peace. Through these gifts of words, water, bread, and wine, God is hiding his goodness and grace for you in the ordinary gifts of creation, and in turn, he ensures that your life is like that pumpkin seed you plant in the garden. Your life is hidden with Christ. In Holy Baptism, he buries you with Christ and raises you to new life in Christ, so that one day, when the Gardener returns on the Last Day, he'll do for you what he did in his own resurrection on the third day. Like the seed that is tossed in the earth and later gives life, when Christ our Lord returns, he who is the firstfruits and the firstborn from the dead will return to bring you new life and bring you into the new creation. In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.Death has lost its old dominion, Let the world rejoice and shout! Christ, the firstborn of the living, Gives us life and leads us out. Let us thank our God, who causes Hope to spring up from the ground; Christ is risen, Christ is giving Life eternal, life profound. (LSB 479:3)Rev. How do we respond to the events of the last day? Revelation 19:1–10 looks forward to the hearing of God's Word, publicly read, in the holy assembly on the coming Lord's Day. In these ten verses of Holy Scripture, the Holy Spirit teaches us that we respond to the events of the last day with great and universal praise unto God. The sermon explores the culmination of God's plan of salvation, vividly depicted in Revelation 19, focusing on the judgment of the "great harlot" and the subsequent celebration of the Lamb's marriage to His bride. It emphasizes God's truth and righteousness, demonstrated through both condemnation and redemption, while highlighting His almighty power manifested in the salvation and sanctification of believers, ultimately preparing them for the marriage supper of the Lamb. The message calls for active participation in summoning others to this blessed state, encouraging evangelism and discipleship as essential components of preparing the bride for her wedding day and participating in the ultimate praise of God.
I am proud of the work I have done and look forward to what's next ✅
King David knows that he has nothing to fear because he has a true fear of the LORD, who alone is a sure salvation. No matter how many enemies array themselves against us, Christians confidently know that the LORD is over all armies, and so we seek the LORD where He has promised to be found. In that assurance, we cry out to the LORD and seek Him according to His Word, asking that He would teach us and lead us. His goodness gives us strength and courage to wait for Him, for we know that He will raise us from the dead on the Last Day. Rev. Dan Torkelson, pastor at Mt. Timothy Appel, looks at the text of Holy Scripture both in its broad context and its narrow detail, all for the sake of proclaiming Christ crucified and risen for sinners. Two pastors engage with God's Word to sharpen not only their own faith and knowledge, but the faith and knowledge of all who listen. Submit comments or questions to: listener@kfuo.org

A few weeks ago, the Atlas Obscura staff told us where they would spend their last days before the apocalypse. Now we're sharing your stories – from a childhood home in a small town in Illinois, to a trip in Eastern Europe, to a pizzeria in Brooklyn and a cave in Utah. Plus: We want to hear your stories about your neighbors! Tell us about your neighbors' front yards, back yards, house decor – and what you like about them. Is there a neighbor in your block who goes all the way every holiday to have the best decorations? Or maybe there's someone who has a wacky display year round? Maybe someone has an incredible garden, or some homemade art sculptures. Did they inspire you? Give us a call at 315-992-7902 and leave a message telling us your name and story. Or you can record a voice memo and email it to us at hello@atlasobscura.com
In this segment of Art Smack, Hilde Lynn Helphenstein recounts her latest adventures in Georgia, from battling mold in historic hotels to exploring local art galleries. She stumbles upon a macabre painting titled 'The Sisters of Salem,' which intriguingly adds to her art collection. Hilde transitions between her personal anecdotes, such as bonding with her nephew and enduring the southern heat, to insightful observations about the commercialization of art. Critiquing how poorly art is marketed compared to luxury goods, Hilde advocates for more engaging, immersive art experiences. She emphasizes the importance of discovering art organically instead of relying on the conventional, often impersonal, art market mechanisms. Amidst these reflections, Hilde humorously navigates small-town charm, quirky shop offerings, and different religious practices, ultimately planning her departure to New York.

Both sides have played voice messages Combs sent this witness, who's testifying under a pseudonym, over the course of their three-year relationship. They're trickling out to the press as exhibits are released days later. The defense says the ones made public on Thursday show "Jane" taking the initiative to set up "hotel nights" without Combs' requesting one. But she testified that the defense was missing the point of the messages. "The undertone of that is -- I hear these things entirely differently," said "Jane."If you want to read NBC's coverage of the trial, check out our newsletter, “Diddy On Trial”: NBCNews.com/Diddy
