Episode Notes The Day of Atonement has arrived. Yet within Christianity, it largely arrived unnoticed. Jesus gave prophetic details regarding the Last Day to come in the parable of the Sheep & Goats. He said it will be a day of separation: Both groups called Him Lord, yet only one group was accepted. The Day of Atonement is the most solemn and prophetic day on God's calendar. It's not just about fasting — it's about returning to God with a soft heart that reflects His mercy. Less than 24 hours remain in the federal fiscal year and Republicans controlling the White House and Congress show no desire to work with Democrats to avoid a government shutdown — which make sense since their plan all along has been to shut down the government and further their claim that government “doesn't work,” which only seems to happen when the people who hate government are in charge of running the government. September 28, 2025 Today's Reading: Luke 16:19-31Daily Lectionary: Deuteronomy 1:1-18; Matthew 5:1-20 “The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham's side. The rich man also died and was buried, and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side. And he called out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in anguish in this flame.' … [Abraham] said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead.'” (Luke 16:22-24, 31) In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. This telling of Jesus is missing a key marker. St. Luke doesn't introduce it as a parable. “So He told them this parable…” (Luke 15:3a). The parables of the lost sheep, the lost coin, the loving father, and the dishonest manager are all connected under that introduction. But the Rich man and Lazarus is set apart by a rebuke of the Pharisees and a command concerning divorce. This nameless rich man, whom the Pharisees might even know, has no repentance. He still begs Abraham to command Lazarus to serve him. In perfection, both of them certainly would, but they cannot cross over. The rich man also demands a greater effort by God to save his brothers; someone raised from the dead, like the parables of loss. Here, Jesus is showing an unending love. They may not be convinced, but Jesus IS going to die for the sins of those brothers. And He'll rise again from the dead. Jesus' death and resurrection is even for the brothers of that rich man. We won't know on this side of the resurrection on the Last Day. Still, I like to think that they did receive repentance and faith. Baptized into Jesus and hearing His Word, you have received His Gifts of repentance and faith. He has turned you from the unbelief and unrepentance that were yours once before. He has and continues to forgive your sin, and the sins of all believers. He is showering you with the promise of Lazarus, to be carried off to the bosom of Abraham. In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. Lord let at last Thine angels come, to Abraham's bosom bear me home, that I may die unfearing; and in its narrow chamber keep my body safe in peaceful sleep until thy reappearing. And then from death awaken me, that these mine eyes with joy may see, O Son of God, Thy glorious face, my Savior and my fount of grace. Lord Jesus Christ, my prayer attend, my prayer attend, and I will praise Thee without end. Amen. (LSB 708:3)Rev. In this episode of the Parsha Review Podcast, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe discusses Parshas Vayelech, a concise 70-verse portion detailing the final day of Moshe's life, where he writes 13 Torah scrolls—one for each of the 12 tribes and one for the Ark—to guide the Jewish people as they enter the Promised Land. Rabbi Wolbe notes the Torah's unique status as a divine document, identical worldwide, unlike other religious texts with multiple versions, emphasizing its public revelation at Sinai, acknowledged by other faiths. He explains that the Torah, given as a manual for living in Israel, was completed just before entry to underscore its applicability there, with rabbinic observance mandated outside Israel to maintain readiness. Moshe's leadership transition to Joshua is highlighted as a model of responsible succession, ensuring stability. Rabbi Wolbe connects this to the Ten Days of Repentance, urging listeners to demonstrate change through actions like adopting stringencies (e.g., Pas Yisroel, eating only Jewish-baked bread), as beginnings set the foundation for future success, akin to laying pure foundations for a child's psychology or Noah's care for the lion. He emphasizes Hashem's promise (Deuteronomy 31:6) to never forsake the Jewish people, citing their resilience despite historical persecution and their unparalleled contributions to society, as evidenced by America's blessings for supporting Israel. Rabbi Wolbe encourages embracing the Torah's guidance, living with Shabbos' sanctity, and recognizing Hashem's protection, concluding with a call for a meaningful Shabbos and anticipation of the Third Temple. Addressing an audience clarification, he likens the Torah to a souvenir of Sinai's revelation, encapsulating 613 mitzvahs to reconnect with that divine moment._____________This episode (Ep 7.48) of the Parsha Review Podcast by Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe on Parshas Vayeilech is dedicated in honor of our Holy Soldiers in the Battlefield and our Torah Scholars in the Study Halls who are fighting for the safety of our nation!Download & Print the Parsha Review Notes:https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1ncaRyoH5iJmGGoMZs9y82Hz2ofViVouv?usp=sharingRecorded at TORCH Meyerland in the Levin Family Studios (B) to a live audience on September 26, 2025, in Houston, Texas.Released as Podcast on September 26, 2025_____________Subscribe: Apple Podcasts (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/parsha-review-podcast-rabbi-aryeh-wolbe/id1651930083)Spotify (https://open.spotify.com/show/22lv1kXJob5ZNLaAl6CHTQ) to stay inspired! Share your questions at awolbe@torchweb.org or visit torchweb.org for more Torah content.  _____________About the Host:Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe, Director of TORCH in Houston, brings decades of Torah scholarship to guide listeners in applying Jewish wisdom to daily life.  To directly send your questions, comments, and feedback: awolbe@torchweb.org_____________Support Our Mission:Help us share Jewish wisdom globally by sponsoring an episode at torchweb.org. Send us a textFirst you might ask - why should I read Victor Hugo.  Well I'm glad you asked.  You see, Reading Victor Hugo is an immersive and profound experience.  But before we deal into Les Miserables, I want to say a little bit about his earlier novels. You see, before his masterwork Les Misérables (1862), Victor Hugo wrote several other significant works, including novels, plays, and poetry. Two of his most important earlier novels are The Last Day of a Condemned Man (1829) and The Hunchback of Notre-Dame (1831). These works were crucial for his development as a writer and established the themes that he would later fully realize in Les Misérables. The Last Day of a Condemned Man (1829)This short but powerful novel is told entirely from the perspective of a man awaiting execution by the guillotine. It is a raw and unflinching look at the psychological torment of a person facing death. Hugo doesn't reveal the man's name or his crime, forcing the reader to focus on his humanity rather than his guilt. Abolition of the Death Penalty: The novel is a direct and passionate plea for the abolition of capital punishment. Hugo uses the condemned man's thoughts and fears to expose the brutality and inhumanity of the state-sanctioned killing. This was a core moral conviction for Hugo and became a lifelong crusade. This work is considered a precursor to the social consciousness of Les Misérables. It shows Hugo's early commitment to using literature to champion the cause of the oppressed and challenge a justice system he viewed as flawed. The book's central argument—that the act of killing a human being is fundamentally wrong, regardless of the crime—is a theme he would revisit.Support the showThank you for experiencing Celebrate Creativity.

Peter's application of Joel 2 to the Day of Pentecost helps us to understand Joel 3 as fulfilled in the life of the Church right now, looking forward to the Last Day. The LORD gathers all nations to be judged by His Word as it is proclaimed by His Church now as a two-edged sword. In this way, the LORD makes ready the final harvest. For those who do not trust in Jesus for salvation, there is only the LORD's vengeance against them, but for those who find their refuge in Jesus, He causes His blessings to overflow.  Rev. David Appold, pastor at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Paducah, KY, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Joel 3:1-21.  To learn more about St. Paul's Lutheran, visit stpaulpaducah.org. “Majoring in the Minors” is a mini-series on Sharper Iron that goes through the books of Hosea, Joel, Jonah, Micah, and Nahum. Although the books of these prophets are shorter, the Word of God they preached was important in the years leading up to the coming of the Christ, and that Word remains important for the Church today. Just as we still need to listen to their call to repentance over our idolatry, so we still need to heed their call to trust in the Savior, Jesus.  Sharper Iron, hosted by Rev. Timothy Appel, looks at the text of Holy Scripture both in its broad context and its narrow detail, all for the sake of proclaiming Christ crucified and risen for sinners. Two pastors engage with God's Word to sharpen not only their own faith and knowledge, but the faith and knowledge of all who listen. Submit comments or questions to: listener@kfuo.org

Our conversation with poet, writer, and translator James Shea, whose extraordinary new collection of poems Last Day of My Face (University of Iowa Press, 2025), was recently published as a winner of the prestigious Iowa Poetry Prize.  James Shea's work delights in word play and unexpected images with a voice set at and considering the edges of meaning. As you'll hear in our conversation, Shea draws from the traditions of haiku and The New York School, giving us humorous and elegiac meditations on our shared predicament as minds trying to make sense of emergency. Or, as Shea puts it at the start of the long poem, “Failed Self-Portrait,” which ends his new collection—and our conversation, “I've made a sort of makeshift / sense of ourselves…” What makes this conversation especially meaningful is that our recording was also a reunion; my colleague, Adult Services Librarian Stevie Noguchi, and I each had James Shea as a poetry professor when he taught in Chicago over a decade ago. Stevie joins me as co-host for this special episode. You'll also hear Shea's reflections on the art of translation, poetic lineage, and readings from the treasure trove of recent publications Shea has put out, as translator and editor, including:  Applause for a Cloud (Black Ocean, 2025), Shea's translations of haiku by Japanese poet Sayumi Kamakura, The Routledge Global Haiku Reader (Routledge, 2023), an introduction to current issues within haiku studies, which Shea co-edited with Grant Caldwell, and, Moving a Stone: Selected Poems of Yam Gong (Zephyr Press, 2022), co-translated with novelist Dorothy Tse and introducing Hong Kong poet Yam Gong to English-language readers James Shea is associate professor and director of the creative and professional writing program at Hong Kong Baptist University. His previous poetry collections The Lost Novel (2014) and Star in the Eye (2008) were both published by Fence Books.  You can check out titles by James Shea here at the Library as part of our Podcast Collection, featuring books and other materials by past guests of the show.

When Vanessa's family moved out of their Florida rental in 2001, they thought they were leaving the house's unsettling energy behind. For six months, she and her sisters had spotted shadowy figures in the hallway, but their parents brushed it off as “reflections.” On their final day, with the house nearly empty, Vanessa's mother stayed behind with her youngest daughter—only to hear the unmistakable sounds of all three girls laughing and running in the back bedroom… even though two of them were already at school. What happened next made even Vanessa's skeptical father believe something was in that house—and it wasn't their imagination.
