Noah's first action upon leaving the ark is a sacrifice of thanksgiving to God for the fulfillment of His promises. This worship of faith is pleasing to the LORD, who responds with further divine service to His creation. Even though He knows that man's heart remains sinful, the LORD promises that He will never again curse the earth or destroy every living creature as He has done, but He will instead cause the seasons to continue until the Last Day. God blesses Noah and His family in this renewed creation, and He provides that they may now eat meat. Such consumption must not be done flippantly or idolatrously, but rather deliberately and with thanksgiving to God. Human life is God's gift, originally created in His image, and is not ours to destroy, but ours to preserve.  Rev. I will also make you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring my salvation to the ends of the earth.” Isaiah 49:6 The Lamb Who Died for All When John the Baptist saw Jesus coming toward where he was baptizing in the Jordan River, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” But what does it mean that he took away the sin “of the world”? The beginning of the Bible tells us how God created the entire human race through one man, Adam. All eight billion of us, spread around the world, are descended from him—all the way to the last baby born just before Christ returns on the Last Day. Unfortunately, just as Adam has passed down his human genes to us, we also inherit our sinful nature from him. We see evidence of that sin everywhere we look—including within ourselves. The Bible says that “sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way, death came to all people, because all sinned” (Romans 5:12). But Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Not only the sin of some or just a few, but every single descendant of Adam and Eve. The prophet Isaiah foretold what Jesus would do: “We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all” (Isaiah 53:6). Note that all have sinned, and the sins of all have been laid on Christ. God’s Word is clear about the extent of Jesus’ work: “He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.” (1 John 2:2). That includes you, of course! Your sins were also placed on Jesus as he suffered for all. Whoever you are, however insignificant in the eyes of the world, lost among the masses of humanity, you, too, are loved by God and redeemed by the blood of his Son. In this parable about the weeds and the wheat, the good seed being planted and the bad seed seed being planted, something happens that we all experience.  Good seeds grow up together with the bad seeds.  Good seeds mature with the bad seeds.  And it is hard to tell them apart. But it isn't our job to tell them apart.  That is up to Jesus, who is patient beyond any type of patient we can imagine. His WORD is the good seed that grows to be stored up safely. Satan tries with all his might to sow as much evil into the world as he can.  It's his mission.  Lies and deception are what he is about. Jesus is about grace and mercy. This grace and mercy leads to salvation, His work, not ours. However, even though you still haven’t paid in full, you already get to move into the house. You get to live in it and enjoy it. You get to make it your own. You don’t have to wait to pay the full amount to make the house your home. Of course, many years later, when you one day make the final payment on your home, there’s a special joy and satisfaction in knowing the home is completely owned by you. There’s no one else with a claim on it at all anymore. Maybe buying a house can help you understand what God is telling you here in Ephesians chapter 1. When you believe in Jesus, you’re marked with God’s seal—the Holy Spirit himself. The Holy Spirit enters your heart as God’s down payment and guarantees your full future redemption to come. Before reaching your ultimate salvation on the Last Day when you sit at your Lord’s feet in heaven, already now, by faith, the Holy Spirit dwells in your heart. That means you now get to enjoy the blessings of God: to taste his forgiveness, to have a hope that presses you forward, to know a love that has no limit. This is just the down payment that guarantees so much more. Your eternal salvation is sealed already by the Spirit dwelling in you. God guarantees a future for you. The Holy Spirit has made your heart his home, and that means you are God’s special possession today and in eternity. Prayer: Dear Holy Spirit, I thank you for making my heart your home and for guaranteeing me a future with you and the Father and the Son. Matthew 2:13-14 God’s Purpose in Herod’s Fear One moment, the baby Jesus had magi laying treasures at his feet; the next, Joseph was taking him into the night and headed for Egypt. The Light of the world had come, but the darkness fought back. You see, the Magi had first come to Jerusalem and told King Herod that they were looking for the King of the Jews. Herod viewed the baby as a threat, and he didn’t like that. He had already killed three of his sons, his favorite wife, his mother-in-law, his uncle, some cousins, and the high priest for being threats to his crown. Now he targeted a baby. But God saved his Son from an early death because the plan of salvation required that he die on the cross when the time had fully come. He fled as a child so that he could later say, “It is finished” (John 19:30). The world did not change the night Jesus was born, but everything changed the morning he walked out of the tomb. The power of Jesus’ resurrection is already removing the darkness, and he will completely remove it on the Last Day. When evil touches your life, remember it also touched him. The child who fled Herod is the Savior who was “despised and rejected by mankind, a man of suffering and familiar with pain” (Isaiah 53:3). At Christmas, God gifts you his Son, Jesus. As St. Paul begins to conclude his second letter to the Thessalonians, he encourages them to pray for the ongoing missionary work that he and his companions are doing. The Lord is faithful, and the apostle knows that the Lord's Word will bear good fruit. In that confidence, he commands the Thessalonians to continue to work diligently to receive their living, just as he had done while among them. This has happened through the work of the Spirit in the means of grace. The apostle thus urges the Thessalonians to stand firm in this tradition. St. Paul turns the Thessalonians' attention to the right teaching concerning the coming of the Lord Jesus. The apostle does not want his beloved congregation to be deceived by any source, and so he warns them concerning the coming of the man of lawlessness, who will attempt to usurp the place of Christ in the Church. Such a spirit of rebellion is already at work, but St. Paul urges confidence on the part of the Church by proclaiming Christ's victory over this lawless one by the Word. The lawless one works by the activity of the devil, and those who refuse the truth will be condemned by their unbelief. This strong warning encourages Christians to cling to the truth of God's Word as we look for the Lord's return.  Rev. St. Paul and his companions begin the second letter to the Thessalonians in grace and peace from the one true God. It is right for them to be thankful for this Christian congregation because their faith is growing and their love is increasing. This remains true even as they endure persecution and affliction for the sake of Christ. The apostle assures the Thessalonians that this does not mean that they have been separated from God's kingdom, but instead, they are counted among the members of God's kingdom. Together, they are waiting for the revealing of the Lord Jesus and His judgment upon all those who do not obey the Gospel. St. Paul concludes his first letter to the Thessalonians by commending them to the God of peace, who alone makes His people holy until the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. Just as conversion to the Christian faith is God's work, so is keeping us in the Christian faith God's work, and St. Paul expresses confidence that God will do this for the Thessalonians. He asks the Thessalonians to pray for him and his team and to bring his affectionate greetings to the congregation.
