    This is the inaugural lecture in the College of Arts & Sciences' new Hidden Humanities lecture series, which invites two guests per academic year to discuss the wider relevance for the the work carried out in the Humanities. In it, Dr. Ferris--the onetime Director of the National Endowment for the Humanities--explores the role of the Humanities in studying the stories that people tell and the identities that they thereby create and communicate, focusing on the rich history and culture of the South.
