Horses in History

Established in 1935 as a part of the Works Progress Administration, the Pack Horse Library Project was aimed at providing reading materials to rural portions of Eastern Kentucky with no other access to public library facilities. Librarians riding horses or mules traveled 50 to 80 miles a week up rocky creekbeds, along muddy footpaths, and among cliffs to deliver reading materials to the most remote residences and schools in the mountains.

Called "the horse the Germans couldn't kill", Warrior was a charger in the British cavalry who served on the front line of WW1 for the duration of the war, surviving many close calls and made it back home to England after. His story resonates as that of a true war horse, a survivor, a friend and to live up to his name, a Warrior through and through.

The legendary Pony Express was made up of fast horses, expert riders and one dangerous 2,000 route. Listen along as I explore this mail delivery system that connected the East and West coasts of the United States to delivery mail faster than ever before in the 1860's.

Today, March 30, 2020, is the 50th birthday of the legendary racehorse, Secretariat. He broke records in each leg of the 1973 Triple Crown on his way to becoming the first horse to win it in 25 years. Secretariat is remembered today for his exceptional career, his near flawless conformation and his remarkable running ability.
