What does it really mean to be an everyday ultra runner? In this episode of the Everyday Ultra Podcast, I sit down with Wes Plate—ultrarunner, YouTube creator, race director of the Copper Kings 100, and the man behind the name Mid-Pack Elite.Wes has completed over 60 ultramarathons, including Cocodona 250 all five years, the Triple Crown of 200s, and the Arizona Monster 300 → Cocodona double—a feat only a handful of runners have ever attempted. But what makes Wes truly special isn't just the miles… it's the journey behind them.We dive deep into Wes's story of overcoming alcohol addiction, how obsession can be both destructive and transformative, and why many ultrarunners are wired the way they are. Wes opens up about identity, self-doubt, validation, and how ultrarunning became a healthier outlet for the same drive that once nearly destroyed his life.We also talk about:What it means to be a mid-pack eliteLessons ultramarathons teach us about life, suffering, and perspectiveWhy Cocodona fundamentally changed how Wes sees himselfThe realities of racing (and directing) 100–300 mile eventsBuilding the Copper Kings 100 from a personal passion project into a sold-out raceWhy the middle and back of the pack are the true heartbeat of ultrarunningWhat's next for Wes—including Vol State and stepping back from Cocodona (for now)This is a powerful, honest conversation about identity, resilience, addiction recovery, community, and purpose—and why ultrarunning is about becoming a better human, not just a faster one.If you've ever felt like you're chasing something deeper through running… this one's for you.SHOW LINKS:Register for our race, The Desert Peak Ultra 100K + 50K at desertpeakultra.comWant to work with me to crush your next ultramarathon in our group coaching program? What a year it has been for Michael Bellman, who began the season without a Group 1 win and finished it by securing the Triple Crown for three-year-old trotters in Victoria. I sat down with Mick at the Maryborough Harness Racing Club & Function Complex to reflect on the year and the elusive Group 1 victory he had long been chasing.
In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, we are joined by Alan Dixon, better known in the backpacking world as Adventure Alan. Alan is a literal rocket scientist, a lifelong adventure junkie, and a foundational figure in the early days of ultralight backpacking, having co-founded Backpacking Light. Alan shares some jaw dropping stories from his many routes, including a near-death experience in the Tetons, his philosophy for developing routes—most notably his popular Wind River High Route, the South Sierra High Route, and the Escalante Overland Route. We dig into how he's managed to bring his base weight down to as low as 2.4 lb., the small luxuries he now allows himself, some of his favorite cottage brands, and his overarching gear philosophies. We also talk about why he follows a ketogenic diet and how he maintains it on trail, his adventures with his wife of more than 20 years, and much more. We wrap the show with the triple crown of gifts for backpackers ($75 or less), a hill that we're willing to die on that everyone else thinks is ridiculous, some new AT stamps that have been out for a long time, and I talk fast. In this final series about raising puppies, we discuss the importance of maintaining the right balance between control and focus, retrieving and upland work. Upland dogs can run blinds without hunting, do hard marks, and still be confident and accomplished in the upland field. It takes time and experience to learn the nuances of bird hunting, scent, feel, etc. Allowed the opportunity to acquire the skill of bird location, the well-balanced dog can run the Triple Crown and Master National in the same time period - with complete success. But it's all about the balance....

Chaunce is joined by former guest Christine Reed and BPR first-timer Maggie Schoemann. In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, we're joined by Lucy Barnard. Lucy, along with her pup Wombat, has walked from the southern tip of Argentina all the way through the Great Divide Trail in Canada, and she'll be picking up the final leg of this monster journey — through northern Canada and into Alaska — later this winter. We get into what compelled Lucy to take on such an audacious mission, especially given that she had virtually zero long-distance hiking experience beforehand. She shares some truly wild stories from the trail, including being held at gunpoint by cartel members, what it's been like navigating this trek with a dog in tow, the extra hoops that come with that, the overwhelming kindness she's encountered from strangers along the way, and plenty more. We wrap the show by highlighting a 140-mile in Portugal that belongs on your bucket list, how a thru-hiker staple might be giving us all mercury poisoning, movies we definitely don't recommend, the triple crown of embarrassing foods, and the lazy person's guide to making your own dehydrated meals. In this episode of Detours, I sit down with my husband, Jake, to look back on his year racing across the United States, and everything that he's learned from taking on the Triple Crown Challenge. In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, brought to you by LMNT, we're joined by Gabe Vasquez, known on trail as "Wing It." Gabe is a U.S. Marine Corps combat veteran, long-distance kayaker and cyclist, and the first known Mexican-American to complete the Triple Crown. Gabe opens up about his time in the Marines and the challenges that followed- PTSD, becoming addicted to prescription meds to manage the PTSD in addition to anxiety and depression, losing friends to suicide after their service, and night terrors. In his efforts to heal, Gabe turned to adventure. He began by paddling the Mississippi with a friend, then took on a PCT thru-hike, followed by eight consecutive years of long-distance backpacking, paddling, and cycling. Gabe shares how that time in nature helped him reclaim his peace, and why he's happier today than he's ever been. Worth noting- this episode includes graphic descriptions of PTSD and suicide. If these topics are sensitive or triggering for you, please take care while listening. We wrap the show with news of a pair of fatal bear attacks near the Ozark Highlands Trail, a partially blind grandmother who thru-hiked the PCT- averaging nearly 40 miles a day in the process, the definitive etiquette around holding doors for strangers, and the triple crown of the worst phrases and expressions. fWotD Episode 3127: Terry Griffiths Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles. The featured article for Wednesday, 26 November 2025, is Terry Griffiths.Terence Martin Griffiths (16 October 1947 – 1 December 2024) was a Welsh professional snooker player, coach and pundit. After winning several amateur titles, including the Welsh Amateur Championship in 1975 and back-to-back English Amateur Championships in 1977 and 1978, Griffiths turned professional in June 1978 at the age of 30. Griffiths's second professional event was the 1979 World Snooker Championship, which he reached as a qualifier. After beating Alex Higgins in the quarter-finals and Eddie Charlton in the semi-finals, he defeated Dennis Taylor in the final by 24 frames to 16, becoming only the second qualifier to win the World Snooker Championship, after Higgins in 1972; only Shaun Murphy in 2005 and Zhao Xintong in 2025 have since emulated the achievement. In 1988, Griffiths reached a second World Championship final. He was tied at 8–8 with Steve Davis but lost the match 11–18.Griffiths reached at least the quarter-finals of the World Championship for nine consecutive years, from 1984 to 1992. He also won the Masters in 1980 and the UK Championship in 1982, completing snooker's Triple Crown. Griffiths was runner-up at the Masters three times and reached the final of the 1989 European Open, where he lost the deciding frame to John Parrott.Although he also won several other tournaments, Griffiths's determination to match his rival Davis led to changes in technique which commentators said cost him his natural flair for playing. He retired from the professional tour in 1996 to become the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association's director of coaching. During his coaching career, he worked with leading players including Stephen Hendry, Mark Williams and Ding Junhui. After a lengthy battle with dementia, Griffiths died in December 2024, aged 77.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:15 UTC on Wednesday, 26 November 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Terry Griffiths on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Kajal.

In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, we're joined by Kristy and Annette Burns—better known as the Wander Women. Since then, they've taken on the AT, PCT, CDT, Arizona Trail, Tahoe Rim Trail, the O Circuit, plus a slew of cycling and packrafting trips. This week on Kliq This, Kevin Nash and Sean Oliver dive straight into the deep end. The episode opens with a wild swing through markets, technology, and the future of AI, setting the stage for a conversation that keeps expanding until it reaches the moon. Their back and forth turns into a sharp look at how power, energy, and innovation could reshape the world faster than anyone is prepared for. The tone shifts as the guys move into heavier territory. They explore political noise, manufactured distractions, and the subjects no one wants to stay focused on. Sean pushes the discussion while Kevin lays out why certain stories never go away and why others disappear too quickly. The tension around truth, institutions, and public manipulation hangs over the whole segment. Wrestling fans still get their fix. Kevin breaks down moments that stood out on Raw, gives unexpected praise to rising talent, and offers insight into how ring work is really judged. There are comments on timing, movement, pacing, and the sort of details only someone with decades in the business can spot. The Garden, the reactions, and the energy of the live crowd all make their way into the analysis. The episode hits a high point when the two debate who gets to be a critic. Kevin argues from the performer's perspective while Sean fires back from the audience's side of the barricade. It becomes a sharp, honest, and at times funny exchange about expertise, fandom, and the fine line between opinion and understanding. Neither man concedes easily, which makes it even better. Kliq This closes with its trademark mix of sharp commentary, unexpected tangents, and the unfiltered honesty that keeps listeners returning every week. It is unpredictable, thoughtful, and packed with moments that land long after the episode ends. Listeners get humor, heat, and a level of candor that only this show delivers. In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, brought to you by LMNT, we are joined by Casey Huffman, known on trail as Vegas. Vegas has been mentioned a couple of times on this podcast in the past, as "the guy whose chest we signed" in 2023, and more recently, "the guy whose ass we signed". As we learn in today's episode, "signed ass guy" is also a real good hang. We chat about how Vegas' mental health struggles ultimately lead him to the trail, how the hiking community and culture gave him the space to reinvent himself, and he shares quite possibly the most entertaining trail name origin story we've ever heard- we'll just say that this one is for adults only. We wrap the show with discussing the merits of a sleeping bag liner, Chaunce is pissed about the cost of fountain soda, we do the triple crown of donuts, and Rachel once again lands a perfectly apropos listener mail bag. Kevin Nash and Sean Oliver step up to the plate this week with an episode built around one of the biggest moments on Raw in years. John Cena finally added the last piece he needed to become a Grand Slam Champion, and the guys dig into why this achievement hits differently, how long it took, and why the reaction backstage and on screen says more than people realize. From there, the show widens into the chaos surrounding the episode itself. Sean's airline saga, government shakeups, and strange political side stories all collide with Kevin's real time reactions to bills, subsidies, and behind-the-scenes motives that never seem to make the headlines. It's a slice of real life filtered through two guys who have seen every angle. Nash then shifts into wrestling mode, breaking down the logic of the matches on Raw, the storytelling choices that led to Cena's moment, and the small pieces of booking that could have shifted everything. They talk about Logan Paul, CM Punk, War Games build, and the surprising elements that did not get addressed on camera. It's a rare dive into how a live show lands from the perspective of someone who has lived it. The conversation stretches into the state of titles today, what a championship means in an era of injuries and constant resets, and why certain performers are thriving while others are stalling. Kevin opens up about the psychology behind working "big," how talent reads the room, and why certain characters click instantly while others struggle to stick. Layer in some NBA talk, baseball economics, Bigfoot sightings, CPAP issues, cannabis taxes, and classic Nash storytelling, and "Grand Slam" becomes a ride that never stops curving. It's fast, sharp, honest, and filled with the kind of insight and humor only these two can pull off. Born in Seattle, Washington, in 1949, Randy Rarick moved with his family to Hawaii when he was five. He started surfing at age 10, under the tutelage of the Waikiki Beach Boys. He was a Hawaiian state junior champ, and made the semifinals of the 1970 World Championships in Australia. In 1976, at age 26, Randy and 1968 world champion Fred Hemmings founded International Professional Surfing, aka the IPS, which linked together what at the time were fragmented pro events around the world. They established a ratings system and a world tour, which ended with the crowning of a world champion. In 1983, Randy spearheaded the Triple Crown of Surfing, which linked together the three North Shore events, and also crowned a champion. Randy would helm the Triple Crown for the next 30 years. Randy is also a surfboard shaper. He was taught how to shape by Dick Brewer and George Downing, and went on to make boards for Surf Line Hawaii, Dewey Weber, and Lightning Bolt. While Randy might be one of the most widely traveled surfers of all time, having ridden waves in over 70 countries, he's called the North Shore home since 1969, and has lived in the same house at Sunset Beach for more than 50 years. He surfs out front, i.e., his backyard, regularly. In this episode of Soundings, Rarick sits down with Jamie Brisick to talk about about the birth of the IPS and the Triple Crown, learning to shape from the masters, rating systems and standardization, surf purism, the importance of Hawaii, and spending a year traveling up the west coast of Africa. Produced by Jonathan Shifflett. Music by PazKa (Aska Matsumiya & Paz Lenchantin).
Send us a textThe sport we love is growing up, and that's a good thing—if we build it right. I'm joined by athlete and agent Nick Cornell of Trailhead Athlete Management to dig into what “professional” actually looks like in trail running: livable contracts, smarter bonuses, real anti-doping, and a path that lets athletes focus on performance without losing the grassroots soul that makes this community special.Nick shares how he went from thru-hiking the Triple Crown to winning Montana 50Ks and managing athletes who train 20 hours a week while juggling logistics, content, deliverables, and travel. We unpack what brands want beyond results—genuine people with presence—and why short trail deserves more investment alongside ultras. We also talk hard numbers: why most pros still sit in the low five figures, how a league minimum could change that, and where healthcare and PT stipends fit in. If you've wondered whether rumors of huge salaries are real, or how to negotiate your first deal, Nick gives grounded, practical insight. We go deep on legitimacy and the World Mountain and Trail Championships—federations offering team camps and big bonuses, the realities of kit rules, and why national team results should be bonused just like track. From out-of-competition testing to non-endemic sponsors—cars, banks, tourism boards, food brands—we explore the funding models that could unlock full-time careers without sidelining local races. The takeaway is hopeful: keep the watermelon at aid stations and the big stages on the calendar. With smarter structure, everyone wins.If this conversation helped you think differently about the future of trail running, tap follow, share it with a friend, and leave a quick rating or review. In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, brought to you by Topo Athletic, we are joined by Amy Hunsucker. On trail, Amy is known as "Slider" because she hikes with a trombone- something she's done for the entire triple crown. We of course learn all about this fun quirk, including which animals were most appreciative of her on-trail concerts, which parts of trail provided the best acoustics, the reactions she'd get from other hikers and the broader trail community, and her go-to on-trail trombone jams. Slider also gives us the low down on getting her sawyer certification, her trail maintenance work with the Carolina Mountain Club, hiking South Dakota's Centennial Trail, and life as a hiking guide in North Carolina. We wrap the show with the pieces of thru-hiking advice we wish we'd never given, Chaunce gives her take of whether she'd rather be alone in the woods with a man or a bear, we do the triple crown of freezer foods, I give a one-minute gear review of my current rain jacket, and a listener lectures us on how we dropped the ball on our interview with Liz Kidder. On this episode, I sit down with pro mountain biker and endurance powerhouse Hannah Otto to talk about the mental and physical strategies that fuel her remarkable performances from setting FKTs on the Moab Triple Crown to racing in the Lifetime Grand Prix and World Championships.Hannah shares how she's built a life around adventure and purpose, balancing the technical and tactical side of elite racing with the mindset tools that keep her grounded and thriving. We dive into her journey from triathlon to mountain biking, lessons from the Leadville 100 win, and how she approaches fear, failure, and focus with the same level of intention she brings to every ride.We also unpack what she calls the “psychological similarity” between pros and everyday athletes, the shared experience of pushing limits, battling self-doubt, and chasing growth for its own sake. Hannah talks about working with a sports psychologist, learning to control what you can and release what you can't, and how her “CocoPelli Strong” mantra has become a symbol of resilience after one of her toughest days on the trail.Episode Art Photo Credit: Marcus Graciaskimo gold, endurance and life coaching with brief testimonials
Another big episode with lots of show notes! We start with my interview of Dr Ben Gans and his amazing journey through the Triple Crown of 200s (Tahoe 200, Bigfoot 200, & Moab 240). We go deep into the challenges he faced in this series of races. I loved this conversation! Then I dive deeper in to the metrics of running and how they can affect your base training period. Lastly, I interview my daughter, Ambrin Saft, after she completed her Freshman season of Cross Country. Enjoy! On June 8 Kate Kellegan and Laura Pineau (aka Mademoiselle Fissure) became the first women to complete the Yosemite Triple Crown. That means the climbed El Capitan, Half Dome and Mt. Watkins in a day. Their time was 23 hours, 36 minutes, and 40 seconds. In this conversation, Kate and Laura share the tactics they used to achieve their big link-up, including tapping into the stoke and support of the community. But first, Kalous lays down on the therapy couch while Dr. Bisharat tries to diagnose why redpointing projects isn't bringing him the kind of joy you might otherwise expect. Last, the Pink Rope Club from Atlanta performs their anthem. Hawaii's Best - Guide to Travel Tips, Vacation, and Local Business in Hawaii
Can November actually be a good time to visit Hawaii, or will you end up stuck in rain and crowds? If you're planning a Hawaii trip and wondering whether November is worth it, you need to know the truth about shoulder season timing, weather patterns, and how to avoid the Thanksgiving rush.
In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, we are joined by Kenneth Pararo, known on trail as Moron. This is a podcast we've been wanting to make happen for several years now, and let me tell you, it does not disappoint. Moron is a thru-hiker, long-distance cyclist, philosopher, hopeless romantic, futurist, and most importantly, just a real solid hang. We learn about why he's all in on AI- as evidenced by him riding cross country rocking his Meta AI glasses, why he quit is corporate tech job to more permanently pursue adventure and experience, how he completed one AT thru-hike and quit another a couple hundred miles from the finish, turning it into an extended road walk to the Canadian border, only to turn around for some more road walking and eventually an extended bike ride, and how he plans his adventuring essentially one day at a time, letting fate largely guide his next move. We wrap the show with tips for safe and steamy tent sex, a contentious debate about using gas station bathrooms exclusively for a year for one million dollars, and the triple crown of people we just don't understand. In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, and brought to you by Topo Athletic, we're joined by Mary “Fireweed” Kwart. Fireweed is a thru-hiker, a Deadhead, and a pioneering figure in wildland firefighting with a career spanning more than 30 years. We dive into the challenges of being one of the first women to join the elite Arrowhead Interagency Hotshots, the culture shock of entering a male-dominated field, and some of the most memorable stories from her decades on the fire line. Fireweed also reflects on how long-distance hiking has evolved since the 1970s, her tradition of tackling a new long trail every year since retiring, and her deep love and advocacy for California's Bigfoot Trail. We wrap the show with the best backpacking trails in the Midwest, the thru-hiking advice we wish we'd never given, a debate over whether robotic legs should count as mechanical transport under the Wilderness Act, and the Triple Crown of parts of society we'd turn the clock back for. In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, brought to you by LMNT, we are joined by me. Because I hiked Tour du Mont Blanc. We go through all the nitty gritty details of my trip, including how I decided on going with a self-guided tour (aka staying in hotels instead of camping), the differences across the French, Italian, and Swiss portions of the trail, the best towns, the landscape highlights, the crowds, the food, how my knees asked for a divorce from my body, and everything else. But wait, there's more. Chaunce is fresh off her wedding and honeymoon, she gives us the full scoop of her month of nuptials and romance. We wrap the show maturely by covering how many poops in a day is too many poops, my business pitch for selling farts online, the triple crown of wedding traditions, I share some new gear that I got to test on TMB, and listeners share their top TMB tips- including how I did it all wrong.
