In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, brought to you by Topo Athletic, we are bringing you the rare Chaunce and Zach solo pod. In this one, we tell the full origin story of Backpacker Radio, from the unofficial co-host audition at a hiker meetup, to Chaunce showing up at the wrong restaurant on day one, to almost not making it past the early episodes. We get into how our interviewing dynamic has evolved over eight years, the technical disasters of the early days, the team that quietly makes this whole thing work, our all-time favorite guests, the ones we never aired, the dream guests we still haven't landed, and answer a slew of listener questions. We wrap the show with a triple crown of worst ways to die, share the news that apparently Roundup is being sprayed in our national forests, opine on whether we'd rather give up sauces or kissing (and debate whether butter is a sauce), and give an overview on how to negotiate a thru-hiking sabbatical from your employer. In The Money Media's Peter Thomas Fornatale (PTF) is joined by horseplayer and handicapper Nick Tammaro to take a glance at the upcoming Belmont Stakes 2026, which will take place on June 6 at Saratoga. The Triple Crown season in horse racing is nearing a wrap with the concluding event, the Belmont Stakes, attracting many runners from Kentucky Derby 2026 including last-to-first winner Golden Tempo, who also recently finalized a stud deal with Lane's End once his time on the racetrack has finished. Several other Kentucky Derby runners hopped over Preakness 2026 to target the Belmont Stakes including Mike Repole's runner Renegade, who finished second to Golden Tempo in Kentucky Derby 2026. A pair of Preakness 2026 runners in Ocelli and Chip Honcho are also probable to compete in this year's Belmont Stakes as well as Kentucky Derby runners Potente, Chief Wallabee, Commandment and Emerging Market. Chief Wallabee will give hall of fame trainer Bill Mott a chance to score back-to-back victories in the Belmont Stakes after he famously skipped Preakness 2025 with Kentucky Derby 2025 winner Sovereignty before winning Belmont Stakes 2025 in a romp over eventual Dubai World Cup champion Magnitude. Saratoga Race Course, traditionally the go-to horse racing meet of the summer on the East Coast, hosts the Belmont Stakes for the last time as renovations near completion on Belmont Racetrack, which also readies to host the Breeders' Cup come 2027 with its modernized grandstand and upgraded racetrack.

In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, brought to you by Topo Athletic, we are joined by Liz Crandall, a former US Forest Service field ranger who was fired by DOGE last February and has since transitioned into advocacy, activism, and podcasting, serving as the host of Rangers of the Lost Park. In this one, Liz walks us through nine years of climbing the federal government's career ladder, from GS3 volunteer to permanent employee, and what it actually felt like to receive the phone call telling her it was over. She breaks down the DOGE firing process, the spam-looking emails that nobody believed were real, the Fork in the Road offer that most people didn't take, and what it looked like inside a Forest Service office where even the people who voted for the administration were crying. She also shares what it took to go from a person who was trained never to talk to the press to someone doing live CNN, the roadless rule and why she thinks rescinding it is a bad idea, her crown jewel podcast guest Ken Burns, and two pants-shitting stories from her hitchhiking days that she's been dreading telling us since she booked this. We wrap the show with hikers who discovered human remains in Vermont, the celebrity names we can never remember, how I butchered the boy who cried wolf, the triple crown of the worst gifts to give your kids, and an ALL TIME listener email and poop story. Broadcasting icons and sports bettors Brent Musburger and Chuck Todd get together to discuss their ideas to cure what ails the Triple Crown in an exclusive conversation on the Ron Flatter Racing Pod. Musburger's years at CBS, ABC and VSiN took him to assignments that included the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes. Todd's work at NBC did not keep him from having a run at betting on horses. Both accomplished more recently in gambling on other games, they have ideas on how racing can survive in the 21st century. In the blush of Napoleon Solo's victory in Preakness 2026, Maryland Jockey Club president and general manager Bill Knauf assesses the week at Laurel Park and the transition back to Pimlico next year. He also talks about the coming partnership with Churchill Downs, which is poised to take over the intellectual-property rights to the Preakness as it may move forward on a different date in 2027. Handicapper Ed DeRosa offers tips for Memorial Day stakes races, including the big card at Santa Anita on Monday. He also offers advice on how to bet the Keertana Stakes on Saturday at Churchill Downs. Co-hosts John Cherwa of the Los Angeles Times and Keith Nelson of Fairmount Park have their popular chat segment and weigh in on listener and reader feedback from Preakness week. Al Rosen wasn't just the American League MVP in 1953, he was one of the most dominant, driven, and intellectually fascinating figures the baseball has ever seen. In this episode of Sports' Forgotten Heroes, we take a deeper look at the life and career of the “Flip,” a man whose peak was as powerful as almost any player of his era. From his rise with the Cleveland Indians to his extraordinary 1953 season, when he hit .336 with 43 home runs and 145 RBIs and came within a fraction of the Triple Crown, we examine what made Rosen not just great, but historically significant. But Rosen's story goes far beyond numbers. The adversity he faced as a Jewish player in a time when antisemitism was far more overt, and the fierce, often intimidating intensity that shaped both his success and his reputation inside the clubhouse. Rosen was never a typical star. He was outspoken, highly intelligent, and unafraid to challenge authority, which made him both respected and, at times, misunderstood. After his playing career was cut short by injuries, Rosen brought that same sharp mind to the front office, where he helped build winning organizations with the Yankees, Astros, and Giants. His impact on the game extended well beyond his playing days, influencing how teams evaluated talent and constructed rosters. This episode goes beyond the highlight reel to tell the full story of a player who burned bright, battled through obstacles, and left a lasting imprint on baseball history. Al Rosen may not always be the first name mentioned among the greats, but by the end of this conversation, it's clear he should be far from forgotten. Joseph Wancho, author of the book, "Hebrew Hammer, A Biography of Al Rosen, All-Star Third Baseman," joins the podcast for a wonderful conversation about one of baseball's greats.
In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, brought to you by LMNT, we are joined by Stephen Palazzo, aka Near Miss, an Army veteran, thru-hiker, and peak bagger who has completed the AT, CDT, AZT, and Colorado Trail, summited all 58 of Colorado's 14ers, and knocked out three of the seven summits. This one runs the gambit. Stephen walks us through 24 years of military service, from crossing into Iraq on the first wave of the ground war in 2003 to negotiating with the number two guy in Al-Qaeda over a solitary confinement dispute, to a very geopolitically tangled deployment in Syria. He also shares how thru-hiking became the thing that finally got him to put down the bottle, why post-trail depression hit harder than anything he experienced in war, and a magical moment in the Wind River Range where he locked eyes with a bull moose. And- as Chaunce comes to grips with her impending move, she has made it her mission to make each podcast an ultra-marathon. This one is sure to give you enough content to get through the week (or year). Also, warning: this episode contains discussions of war, combat, death, PTSD, and alcohol abuse. We wrap the show with an article about thru-hiker entitlement, discussing why a Sawyer filter lasts a lifetime but you're supposed to swap a Brita every few months, the triple crown of mountain peaks, a new sun hoody review series, a detailed mailbag about a listener's experience on the San Diego Trans County Trail, and Chaunce schedules an impromptu summit of Mount Rainier. In The Money Media's Peter Thomas Fornatale (PTF) and Jonathon Kinchen (JK) catch up following a unique running of Preakness 2026 this past Saturday (May 16) at Laurel Park instead of the usual host track Pimlico, which is currently undergoing renovations. PTF & JK offer reactions and analysis of Preakness 2026 including on the mildly surprising win by Napoleon Solo, who scored under jockey Paco Lopez at a square price of 8-1, and talk in general about the 2026 Triple Crown season which started with a bang from Golden Tempo's sensational stretch run to win Kentucky Derby 2026 for jockey Jose Ortiz and trainer Cherie DeVaux. Triple Crown focus now shifts to three weeks from now up in Saratoga for the final jewel of horse racing's signature series with Belmont Stakes 2026, which so far has attracted the likes of Golden Tempo among other Kentucky Derby starters who opted to skip this year's Preakness Stakes. What did you think of the Preakness? What are your takeaways from the race? Share your thoughts in the comments! PTF sits down with Paul Halloran, author of the new book about Cody's Wish. Cody Dorman's story captivated the nation as the racehorse Cody's Wish rose to prominence. Cody met the foal in 2018 through Make-a-Wish, and the owners named the horse after Cody after seeing their connection. Cody traveled across the country to watch the horse run, drawing national attention.Cody saw Cody's Wish win a Breeders' Cup race at Keeneland in 2022 and was at Santa Anita in 2023 when the horse ended his career with a thrilling victory. The next day, on the flight home, Cody fell asleep on his mother's shoulder and did not wake up. While his death caused immeasurable sadness, those close to him were comforted that he was there for his horse right to the end. This is a story of resilience, triumph, and love—of the inexplicable yet undeniable bond between a courageous boy and the champion racehorse he considered his best friend. And it is a story that is still unfolding, with a life-size monument at Kentucky Horse Park debuting in 2025 and the first crop of Cody's Wish foals heading to the yearling sales in 2026, to race as two-year-olds in 2027.
Share your thoughts in the comments!PTF sits down with Paul Halloran, author of the new book about Cody's Wish. Tomorrow is the Preakness Stakes, the second event in the Triple Crown. Betting on horse racing in the U.S. has declined by more than 50% over the last few decades. And while you might think platforms like Kalshi and Polymarket would see opportunity in horse racing bets, they haven't made inroads. Why don't prediction markets have a horse on that race? We explain. And later, we'll do the numbers on defense lobbying.

This episode of The C.L. Brown Show features former Courier Journal columnist Jerry Brewer, who is currently a senior columnist with The Athletic. Brewer explains why the Preakness Stakes has to move in order to keep the Triple Crown relevant. He also tells why Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby continues to be the crown jewel of horse racing. Politics and sports often intersect on the playing field, but Brewer lays out why he doesn't expect Black athletes to start boycotting Southern schools en masse due to gerrymandered districts that have peeled back representation.

In The Money Media's late-week Players' Podcast is back with another episode filled with great insight on the weekend's horse racing action! On the tail of a historic Kentucky Derby and now in the throes of a Triple Crown season raising debates once again, Peter Thomas Fornatale (PTF) takes a detour to look at some of the other wonderful racing happening this Saturday (May 9) including the opening day of action at the heart of the Jersey Shore, Monmouth Park! Brian Skirka from Monmouth joins the show first to talk with PTF about the day and the season at Monmouth Park, and later in the show PTF sits with Jonathon Kinchen (JK) to take a deeper dive into the opening day card at Monmouth. The late-week show wraps with the Woodbine segment where PTF sits with Breeders' Cup Betting Challenge champion Drew Coatney to go over bets and wagering strategies for the races on Saturday at Woodbine.
After news that Cherie DeVaux, the first woman to ever train a winner of the Kentucky Derby, decided to skip Preakness 2026 with Kentucky Derby 2026 champion Golden Tempo, conversations in horse racing have again circulated about whether the current state of the Triple Crown is broken or not. In The Money Media's Peter Thomas Fornatale (PTF) sits with NBC's Randy Moss to talk about the scheduling of the Triple Crown races. Many trainers have expressed disinterest and concern in bringing horses out of the Kentucky Derby back to the track in two weeks to compete in the Preakness Stakes, held traditionally at Pimlico Racecourse but to be contested this year at Laurel Park while Pimlico undergoes renovations. And yet, many trainers including Kentucky Derby 2025 champ Bill Mott have opted to go from the Kentucky Derby to the third jewel of the Triple Crown, the Belmont Stakes, which Sovereignty did win with ease over Journalism - a horse who competed in all three legs of the Triple Crown in 2025 including a win in Preakness 2025. Some horses have taken the test unburdened even in defeat, but trainers remain hesitant in the modern age to risk their runners in the Preakness. So what has to change? Does the Triple Crown necessarily have to change? The Triple Crown in horse racing has always been an elusive and difficult prize but is that reason enough to maintain the current schedule which does not even excite trainers to send their prospects down the Triple Crown trail? The Triple Crown traditionally has been a five-week turnaround between the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes, but would adding more time between those races encourage trainers to participate and help reignite energy for the spectacle, or is it all just bells and whistles? PTF and Randy Moss discuss the issues with the current state of the Triple Crown in horse racing and discuss what options exist around its current dysfunction.
Young John finally gets his "I told you so" moment on Harden as Lima admits he may have underestimated how the playoff schedule would expose him. The hosts shift to OKC's win over the Lakers and debate whether dominant teams ever get the credit they deserve. A lighter note closes things out with some unexpected horse racing news.

On this Thursday edition of Sid & Friends in the Morning, Sid expands on the theme of not giving up hope, both when it comes to listeners' personal lives and the current state of our great nation in America. In news of the day, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani has left the intensive care unit - his spokesperson said - after being hospitalized with pneumonia, Barack Obama has taken a swipe at President Trump by listing several of his overreaches without ever naming him in an interview with late night television host Stephen Colbert, and there will be no Triple Crown winner in horse racing this year after Cherie DeVaux & the team for Golden Tempo announced less than a week after the horse won the Kentucky Derby in a stunning upset that it will not race at the 2026 Preakness Stakes on Saturday, May 16 in Laurel, Maryland. Bill O'Reilly, Brilyn Hollyhand, Joe Benigno, Lee Harris & Stephen A. Smith join Sid on this Friday-eve installment of Sid & Friends in the Morning. Learn more about your ad choices. Hour 2 features Alex Donno joining the show to break down the growing excitement surrounding the upcoming FIFA World Cup, the outrageous ticket prices, and why the tournament remains one of the ultimate bucket-list events in sports. The guys discuss Italy once again missing the World Cup after failing to qualify and how host nations like the United States, Mexico, and Canada automatically received bids into the field. Later in the hour, the crew reacts to the increasingly bizarre Dianna Russini and Mike Vrabel scandal, debating whether Vrabel's job could be in danger, how the alleged affair stayed hidden for years, and whether emotional cheating is worse than physical cheating. They also have some fun with the news that Golden Tempo will skip the Preakness Stakes, joking that load management has officially made its way into horse racing and eliminated any chance at a Triple Crown winner this year.
As we approach the next jewel of horse racing's Triple Crown and a loaded summer of stakes racing, In The Money Media's Peter Thomas Fornatale (PTF) looks to grab all of the data he can from this year's Kentucky Derby to get a better understanding of who might be the strongest coming out of the race and who may have had an easier time in the Run for the Roses. PTF sits with Adam Mills from Total Performance Data to break down the metrics from this year's running of the Kentucky Derby! They analyze horses' speed through the race, stride length and more to figure out which horses put in strong performances on the First Saturday in May. This information will go a long way since Kentucky Derby winner Golden Tempo, trained by the first woman to win the Derby Cherie DeVaux, is currently considering a start in the Preakness Stakes. Many of the other horses from the Kentucky Derby will reemerge later in the summer with Saratoga right around the corner, so the data broken down in this video also gives a sense of who could be a major contender for Belmont Stakes 2026, the third leg of the Triple Crown, or even other major races on the year like the Jim Dandy and the mid-summer Derby, the Travers Stakes at Saratoga.

In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, brought to you by LMNT, we are joined by Katie "Sunrise" Lance, a civil engineer turned professional triathlete turned thru-hiker who completed the AT last year before quitting her job to pursue triathlon coaching full-time. In this one, Katie walks us through what it's like to qualify for Kona on your very first Ironman, how she was training 20 hours a week on top of 12-hour night shifts at the Tennessee Valley Authority, and what finally pushed her to leave it all behind and hike from Georgia to Maine. She also shares the full arc of a pink-blazing situation that somehow ends with a guy hiking 74 miles in 24 hours to process his feelings, how she nearly got bit by a rattlesnake while finally rinsing out her pee rag for the first time, and why she thinks anyone can finish an Ironman if they actually train for it. We wrap the show with a piece on why week one of a thru-hike is the hardest, a profile on a 70-year-old who set out to hike all three Triple Crown trails in a single calendar year, debating whether pizza loses its luster as you get older, the triple crown of Star Wars characters, and the weird places toddlers pee.
