Reflections on navigating young adulthood as engaged and connected global citizens that hold multiple identities
After much contemplation and thoughtful consideration. We have made the decision to end our podcast in the current form. It has been two years of great adventure and now we are ready to gro into our next phase as a podcast network. We so deeply believe in the media format that is podcasts and we would like to get our hands dirty in building awareness, expanding offering, and establishing the relevance of the format. Thank you for listening since 2018 and for engaging on and off the platform. See you in a bit. Please listen and share widely. It's unbelievable that it has been two years since we released our first episode. What began as a labour of love in 2018 has grown into an entity that keeps us connected and breathes life into our friendship constantly. To everyone who listens, shares, and engages, shukraan. A ni ri tshileli. This is 30 minutes of updates on how work is going, the #coronavirus, what has kept us busy as well as what we have enjoyed the most about our time together. The title is misleading because brown sugar is just a detour from the one who shall not be named. In this episode, Porcupine goes through four reflective questions that are sitting with her; Where are you? What are you doing? What are you realizing? and What are you listening to? The episode is also littered with tangents so good luck with that. We hope you are doing okay and taking care of yourself wherever you may be. Love and Light to all the HCPs who are putting their effort and skill to move humanity forward.
Season 2 Episode 3 We greet you all in the name of consistency. 2020 this episode has come in full circle. Around this time Banana was going through it; reconciling the dreams of a graduate, a high achieving postgraduate at that. It seemed like her efforts were at odds with the labour practices of her home country as well as the economic circumstances of the region overall. What has changed in 12 months? Catch up with her life in this episode. #Adultlifehurts
This is it! The episode that answers how we got our podcast started. In the past, we have highlighted our motivations and inspirations, but never a step by step guide. We believe this is different from a 'tools you need' list primarily because we go behind the rationale and chronology of the genesis of Porcupine and Banana. Grab a pen and crank the volume up because it's a little ASMR in here :D
We are back with season 2! This episode is the first part of an alternating series, one hosted by banana and the other by porcupine. Today, banana and her guest broccoli, both relatively recent graduates and utterly unemployed, are speaking and mostly complaining about the challenges of navigating the Egyptian job market. Also, check out this really cool research paper that showcases the unemployment problem in Egypt. https://www.brookings.edu/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/en_youth_in_egypt.pdf
This February we celebrated 6 months since we started this podcast and with this episode we end season 1! On this stunner of an outro, guest starring Banana in all her glory, we cover returning to a once known place and having to deal with the harsh realities of change. Whether you are realizing the sheer nature of the void you left or communicating new found and unexpected priorities, returning to a home with plans to move on is a daunting experience and Banana does a great job of narrating this confusing transition in young adult life.
Hello Folks! A happy 2019 to you and yours. Due to unforeseen circumstances, we had to repurpose our last recording for a different time. Instead, we will finish off the season with a two part episode on transitioning. This one goes out to all the young people who are making important transitions in their lives.
You, yourself and your phone are all you need to discover your true self and live your best life (these are alternative facts). On this episode we cover our problematic relationship with our phones and also how they can be convenient. Time waster, meditation coach, sous-chef, you name it! We present to you our journey phone addiction. We hope you enjoy this episode, preferably on your phone.
It's December (or Dezemba if you are so inclined). If we have our listener demographic right, then you are taking stock of your life, assets and auditing your progress for the 2018 calendar year. We are doing the same and setting our sights on the new year by setting resolutions. Listen in to hear how we set resolutions, keep up with them and how we confront the ones we don't reach.
This time round, we explore a sticky topic that is bound to set our inboxes on fire. It is a concept we often throw out into the world but find a had time interrogating about ourselves. We decided to rip the bandaid and come right out, we are airing out our privilege! And just for measure, we are talking about the responsibilities of the privileged. Attached below are links to a speech and a book, both apt in beginning to think about contemporary ways in which privilege shows itself and perhaps how it can be confronted. We hope you enjoy listening and reading along. W.E.B Dubois, The Talented Tenth: http://teachingamericanhistory.org/library/document/the-talented-tenth/ C.S. Ola amigxs, welcome to episode 7 and to the second half of this season. On this episode we explore the topic of friendships; how we make them, how they impact us and where we have fallen short. If by any chance you feel subtweeted, then askies, otherwise give us a listen and text a friends to let them know how you feel afterwards.
On this episode we explore weaknesses, shortcomings, flops and all things dull. We hope this sparks conversations in your own circles about areas of improvement in your lives. Let us know what you think!
On this episode we tackle the topic of podcasts themselves! We are excited to share our reflections on this platform and why we love being a part of it! We also share some news about the future of PnB. Listen and share with a friend who doesn't listen to podcasts
On episode 4, we take it back. Back to the days when we were young, foolish and oblivious to the world to explore ways in which we are currently becoming the adults we needed when we were younger, for ourselves and for others. It's kinda messy, but what is life without a few spills here and there, yeah?
This week we took a ride (hehe) down the transport lane. Get ready for a rapid evaluation on our experiences on public transportation. Oh! and here's the link we promised: http://time.com/5274209/airplane-cry-emotion/
On this episode we invited a young and smart guest, Turmeric, to explore our past traumas and experiences with assessments. The episode is slightly salty, filled with banter, and somewhat reflective on important factors we sometimes forget.
