In this raw and impassioned episode of RattlerGator Report, J.B. White introduces “Project De-Weaponization,” a bold cultural initiative aimed at dismantling the power structures surrounding the N-word and the broader manipulation of language. Drawing from personal experience, Southern history, and cultural commentary, J.B. makes the case that the enforced taboo around the word is a mental health issue used to infantilize and control Black Americans. He dives deep into the historical roots of the “Talented Tenth,” the manipulation of identity politics, and how language has been hijacked to divide rather than unite. Blending personal anecdotes, sharp humor, and cultural analysis, J.B. critiques what he sees as performative outrage, the hypocrisy of modern racial discourse, and the media's exploitation of racial tension. From Zora Neale Hurston to Eric Church lyrics, and even a breakdown of Pulp Fiction's power dynamics, this episode is both fiery and reflective. J.B. calls on non-Black Americans to help break the dialectical chains and treat the word as just that, a word. Unapologetically honest, challenging, and often humorous, this episode is a rallying cry for cultural maturity and honest dialogue, inviting listeners to confront uncomfortable truths in pursuit of real healing and unity.

The African American elite - a history of America that we don't often hear about in our popular culture. With Ms. Kamala Harris's swift nomination and crushing defeat, in this interview my guest and I approach African American history from a different angle and with a fresh perspective - stories of their intellectual, organizational and business accomplishments in the 19th century (before and after the Civil War) and the 20th century (before the Civil Rights movement). These stories are told through Dr. Lewis's own family, who belonged to the "Talented Tenth", a term he describes in this interview. *****
W.E.B. Du Bois and Countee Cullen were, no question, pivotal pillars during the Harlem Renaissance. Du Bois's philosophy of race and Cullen's masterful poetry defy the status quo of the early 1900s; however, both men fall victim to the challenges Black people still face today. In this special episode, Franchesca Ramsy and Conscious Lee dive deeper into the black-on-black conflict, church hurt, and misogyny that show up in our “Talented Tenth” series, in addition to modern times. As the good book says, “The truth shall set you free,” and our hosts tell it for real, for real.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

As Countee Cullen tries to recover from his divorce from Yolande DuBois, his career begins to falter. The Great Depression has rolled in and Black art is one of the first things to suffer. White patrons have pulled their investments, so Countee must find a steady gig. He takes a job as a teacher, where he begins to mentor a young James Baldwin. Meanwhile, W.E.B. DuBois is moving away from respectability politics and calling for Black people to divest from integrated society and capitalism. To save his public image, Countee Cullen marries W.E.B. Dubois' daughter, Yolande. The wedding is the merger of the century. All of Black high society is in attendance to celebrate this high profile matrimony. W.E.B.'s plan to create a dynasty is complete. Countee finds love and another father figure. Happy ending, right? Not quite. Countee's marriage to Yolande might've hushed the whispers of his sexuality but temptation is closer than he can handle. In the early 1900's, Harlem Renaissance poet Countee Cullen went from an orphan to one of the most celebrated literary figures of his time. But his reluctance to introduce Blackness into his art threatened to alienate him from peers. And his struggles with his sexuality threatened to isolate him from his family. Luckily, his mentor W.E.B. DuBois has a plan to solve both problems. See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
In the early 1900s, NAACP co-founder W.E.B. DuBois is at the top of his game, as the first Black person to earn a PhD from Harvard and as editor of a successful magazine. He believes he has a way to achieve full equality for Black people, but major beef with civil rights leaders Booker T. Washington and Marcus Garvey threatens to expose his idea as an elitist mess. One of the most significant issues people face is that we take the good things of God and make them an idol in our lives. A primary example of this is how we view money. In the third episode of our NYC private school series, Ellie and Carrie speak with Alyssa, a Black Spence alumna whose experience of growing up in uneasy proximity to whiteness was lonely and damaging. Alyssa, whose family represented what Caitlin Flanagan describes as "the bread and butter of these schools... the two-career couple who care greatly about their children's education and can afford it, but not easily," struggled to fit in with her wealthier white peers. A light-skinned Black woman with roots in what W. E. B. Du Bois deemed the "Talented Tenth," Alyssa's mother taught her to reject her blackness in the name of respectability. The disassociation brought on by the pressures of assimilation made Alyssa an anxious and compulsively polite child who could not freely be herself. One of the two Black students in her grade for her first eight years at Spence, Alyssa became a self-described "poser" whose desperation to be seen as white only led to isolation. She unpacks the traumas of self-surveillance and external adultification as a Black girl taught not to love herself. Reckoning years later with images of jubilant enslaved people in the Spence dance studio's wallpaper, Alyssa gathers the fragments of a fractured identity.

This episode is an exploration of what gets in the way of partnerships between Black women and white women: control, superiority, power struggles, and plantation narrative. We also talk about the white wounds that we unwillingly bring into the work and what's possible when we heal and move beyond the wounds. Dr. Audrey Jordan is the Jerry D. Campbell Professor and DEI Specialist at Claremont Lincoln University, and is a certified executive life coach, focused on “accompanying social justice leaders and teams to unchain power for transformation.” Audrey is also currently an independent consultant with her own practice – ADJ Consulting and Coaching: capacity building for constituent-centered, place-based community change; cultivating community democracy; strengthening organizational and collaborative partnership capacities for learning and accountability; and teaching about and facilitating conversations to promote racial equity and social justice. Black Political Leaders There are two talks on Black leadership, one on Political Leaders, one on Intellectual Leaders. This is the talk on Political Leaders. The focus is upon nine key leaders. There are others who are worthy of inclusion. I thought of Rosa Parks, far more significant than the demeaning image as a simple woman with tired feet who sat down rather than stand. Parks was a defiant activist who moved to Detroit to keep from being assassinated. Without her and others like her organizing car pools, the Montgomery Bus Boycott would have failed. She organized women on the ground, and sparked a movement. Her leadership was remarkable. May I recommend that you consider reading Dark At the End of the Street, an amazing book on the role of women in the civil rights movement. It will change your way of thinking. And will help you see Rosa Parks in a totally different light. Note: I intentionally left out elected leaders, although some are very significant. There are separate podcasts on Barack Obama, Vernon Jordan, and others. Also Note: There are two very good graphic-style biographies of John Lewis, the great civil rights leader and member of Congress. One is called March, the other is called Run. Who are these leaders? Frederick Douglass, an abolitionist and Black-rights activist, who wrote Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, the best of the slave memoirs. Sojourner Truth, activist, feminist who wrote a memoir. Brooker T. Washington, who wrote Up From SlaveryW. E. B. Du Bois, a founder of the NAACP and author of The Souls of the Black FolksMarcus Garvey and the United Negro Improvement AssociationMartin Luther King and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. The film Selma describes one of his critical marches. Malcolm X, originally of the Nation of Islam. His Autobiography of Malcolm X is a remarkable work. There is also an excellent film entitled Malcolm X starring Denzel Washington. Jesse Jackson, who was an ally of Martin Luther King and then formed his own organization. Louis Farrakhan of the Nation of Islam. My conference paper (“The Political Ideology of Louis Farrakhan”) is deposited in Deep Blue. Terms used: Seneca Falls, Talented Tenth, Maroons, Black Nationalism, Black Star Line, Elijah Mohammed, Boston Latin High School, Calypso music, Fruit of Islam, J. Edgar Hoover, Paul Tillich, Rosa Parks, Southern Christian Leadership Conference/SCLC. The remarkable essay by Garvey that I call “Advice to Young People” is actually named “Intelligence, Education and Universal Knowledge.” It is available on the internet. If you read it, you will be glad you did. ("Never forget that intelligence rules the world and ignorance carries the burden").

This week on the podcast I discuss C.L.R. James's "Beyond a Boundary." Next week I'll be talking about Barbara Neely's "Blanche among the Talented Tenth."
Dean & Los are talking about the The Talented Tenth theory written and discussed by W.E.B. Du Bois. They speak on the theory, how can the theory be used in 2021. We are all products of our environment. Who we are, and who we become in the world, is shaped by the places we were raised. In Shawn Stewart Ruff's debut novel Finlater, a Cincinatti housing project takes center stage, acting as a springboard for every aspect of protagonist Cliffy Douglass's young life. The book is fiction but draws closely from Ruff’s own childhood growing up Black in the 1970s. Moving and memorable, Finlater explores the overt racism that still plagues America. With a probing eye and tender touch Amanda explores Ruff's world in this secret coming-of-age classic about changing demographics, interracial friendship, sexual orientation, and first love. About the Author:Shawn Stewart Ruff is author of the novels GJS II (2016), Toss and Whirl and Pass (2010), Finlater (2008), winner of a Lambda Literary Award for Debut Fiction; and the novella One/10th (2013), the first of ten small entwined works inspired by W. E. B. DuBois' The Talented Tenth. He is also the editor of the landmark anthology Go the Way Your Blood Beats (1996). Host, Dr. Chatmon, speaks with educator and social critic, Tony Clark, about his work empowering our families and communities to start some good trouble as they learn how to advocate for their children’s best interest and blow the system up from the inside. From reasons beyond the scope of show notes, there is a documented difference in the relationship with schools that Black and brown families have as compared to their white and Asian counterparts. In recent years, we’ve witnessed a rise in identity-based harassment, public acts of hate, and the normalization of bigotry. Indeed, research from the Southern Poverty Law Center and reports from the FBI highlight a sharp increase in hate crimes over the past few years. These findings suggest that, now more than ever, we must find strategies to combat hate and work to develop safe and inclusive spaces for marginalized populations. Today, we examine what it means to become an ally in the current political environment by interviewing Corey Ponder, founder of Em|PACT Strategies. Black History Week and The Talented Tenth hosted by Sibeko
DuBois helped give us concepts ranging from double consciousness in “The Souls of Black Folk" to pan-Africanism and from the "Talented Tenth" to Black Power. Franklin continues his Black History Month mini-pod series with a look at one of the most versatile and important thinkers of the 20th century, W.E.B. DuBois. Enjoy!
This time round, we explore a sticky topic that is bound to set our inboxes on fire. It is a concept we often throw out into the world but find a had time interrogating about ourselves. We decided to rip the bandaid and come right out, we are airing out our privilege! And just for measure, we are talking about the responsibilities of the privileged. Attached below are links to a speech and a book, both apt in beginning to think about contemporary ways in which privilege shows itself and perhaps how it can be confronted. We hope you enjoy listening and reading along. W.E.B Dubois, The Talented Tenth: http://teachingamericanhistory.org/library/document/the-talented-tenth/ C.S. The SetList is a music podcast hosted by Forth District’s A&R, Adan Bean, and features artist from every part of the musical landscape. The SetList seeks to reveal an artist’s interests, influences, and background in music like no other interview has done before. On this episode, Adan sits down with his Forth brother-in arms, Sho Baraka! Sho doesn't have any new music to discuss, so I figured I'd switch it up and and just have a talk with this incredible "Thought Leader". So, this is a freeflowing conversation with the homie. We focus our time together around Grown Hip Hop. Hip Hop is often typified as a 'young man's game' but this genre has aged as have many of its music-makers and consumers. We go back and forth identifying our list of music from the genre that speaks to hip hop's maturity and growth. We highlight and celebrate it here. In addition to that, we talk about how Lebron on the Lakers is reconciling our sports friendship, the changing politics of progressivism (and by converse, conservatism as well), and what work Sho is up to right now. We discuss it all! Mixed and Edited by DJ Opdiggy. Recorded at the Forth District Podcast Studio. Powered by Forth District.

With the proliferation of fake news and negative images of people of color in the media, Black news outlets are now more important than ever. Today we highlight the work of The Black Detour, an up-and-coming media outlet aimed at empowering and informing black people, by interviewing the founder Jay Colby. In the interview we discuss how he developed the platform and grew his audience (22:40) and advice he has for others interested in telling stories that matter (26:34). We also grapple with a few interesting questions about historical and contemporary issues in the black community. Specifically, we ask whether black people are too forgiving in regard to racism and oppression (30:44), we discuss elitism in the black community and whether the Talented Tenth is relevant in the 21st century (37:48), and we discuss whether integration is the worst thing that happened to the black community (56:40). We close by having a conversation about the importance of black media for knowledge building in the black community (1:07:17). "The Real" is a daytime talkshow similar to the View, but features a cast that is all women of color. Shows like this are powerful in shaping popular culture and the discussions that we have in Society. Even if you don't watch them, you should know that TV talkshows are deconstructing Society and shaping the future of culture. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w_1J0eLOI3o "How," you might ask? Well, take this excerpt from Penn State's archives: As we watch, listen, and are entertained, TV talk shows are rewriting our cultural scripts, altering our perceptions, our social relationships, and our relationships to the natural world. So let me tell you the real: whether you think conversations are too shallow or too deep, if it's on TV it has the power to influence Society. And that's a power to which we should pay attention, because if we harness the power of Social Media we can "rewrite the cultural scripts" on American Racism, "alter the perceptions" held by racists in our Society and change our relationship to those around us. Wouldn't that be something? The question then becomes, how do we of the Talented Tenth position ourselves to shape the conversations that will shape culture. And that's the gist of the conversation on this episode of Blacks with Power. Jessica Johnson is the Social Media Producer for The Real. From that vantage point she is responsible for bringing conversations from Social Media to the show. She shares her perspectives on the Social Media landscape and it's potential for Black empowerment. What do you think? What is the power of social media and how can you make better use of it? With President Trump in office, there's a lot of talk about what will happen across the board in the aspects of American Society that are most important to Blacks in America. Chief among those aspects is Education...right? I mean...you've seen how Betsy DeVos has been received by the public, right? Education has long been - rightfully so - a hot-button issue. It wasn't that long ago (circa 1954) that Brown vs. Board of Education ended legal segregation in American public schools. And racial disparities in education still persist. Access to post-secondary education has been and remains a huge problem. Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) were founded to fill the void that was created by racism & segregation. HBCUs still fill that void. And there's a long history of struggle to keep these institutions funded and advance their standing so they remain as safe spaces for empowering those that Society would have no problem leaving behind. The Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) is one of the major organizations fighting on behalf of HBCUs - specifically publicly funding HBCUs. And in this episode of Blacks with Power, I speak with TMCF President & CEO Johnny Taylor about pressing matters facing HBCUs as well as some of the great work being done to showcase Black Colleges and Universities - and more importantly, to showcase HBCU Students. Listen to our discussion and learn what you can do to help protect HBCUs in this present political climate as well as how you can help support the work being done to shape the next generation of the Talented Tenth. Then be sure to come back and let us know what you think... Do you agree with Johnny's perspective on President Trump's budget proposal and how it affects HBCUs? What do you think of the efforts by the Thurgood Marshall College Fund to empower students? On what issues was Washington prepared to compromise and why? What were the goals of Washington's program and how did these differ from the recommendations of W.E.B. Du Bois? Why does Du Bois seek to "conserve" the races? How would "the conservation of the races" help the future of the Negro race as well as the future of world civilization? What principles of the American regime appear to run counter to Du Bois's emphasis on "race organizations" and "race solidarity"? What does Du Bois mean by the "talented tenth"? Autumn, The Play Inspired by the Newark NJ Mayors Cory Booker and Sharp James! SATURDAY, APRIL 19, 2015 EXCLUSIVE: MNN's "The Gist of Freedom" Interviews of Richard Wesley and cast members! Mr. Wesley an Award-winning Playwright and Screenwriter talks about his new play, "Autumn"! Richard Wesley, whose hits include "Uptown Saturday Night" and "Let's Do It Again" which starred Sidney Poitier and Bill Cosby and "The Mighty Gents" which went to Broadway. "Autumn," an absorbing new drama by Richard Wesley that probes the fragility of political legacies and human relationships, premieres at Crossroads Theatre Company April 23 through May 3. "Autumn" is the first full-length stage play, since the premiere of Wesley's acclaimed work, "The Talented Tenth," in 1989, which looked at the lives of a group of Howard University graduates who were part of an emerging Black elite. “I began thinking that there was a new generation of post-civil rights movement politicians emerging that was very different from the generation that came of age during the civil rights movement,” Wesley said. “There was a group of old-school politicians who found themselves wrapped up in political scandals; and right behind [them] were these younger politicians who were moving up.” Since 1995, Wesley has been an associate professor of dramatic writing at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, where he served as chair of the Rita and Burton Goldberg Department of Dramatic Writing for eight years. He is a former vice president of the Writers Guild of America, East. Crossroads Theater Company is located at 7 Livingston Ave., New Brunswick.
