Abby was 9 years old when she came to me and said: "Mum how come I'm the only one in my class who does thinking time?" I'd been expecting (and dreading) the day when I had to explain to her that she had autism, and that day had arrived. It turned out to be a magical moment and changed my whole perspective on what autism is. Once again this episode is unedited in the hope that other families listening can relate to my story and realise that they're not alone.
In this episode I talk about the confusion and overwhelm we experienced when our daughter was first diagnosed with autism. I discuss our experience with ABA therapy and how this changed all our our lives in a way no-one ever thought possible. Once again it is unedited so please forgive the long pauses and me trying to hide the fact I have tears running down my cheeks. It is raw and real and hopefully it helps any parents currently going through a similar situation.
This episode is the first in a 3 part series. 1: The diagnosis 2: ABA therapy 3: Telling Abby she had autism My goal in recording this series, was to give parents hope. When it seems your world is falling apart, find that hope and grab onto it with both hands - it will see you through your darkest days! I have recorded these episodes without editing. They are raw and they are real because I want others to know that I went through it and came out the other side, and you can too. You'll find all the episodes in this series on my website: www.sbfchallenge.com.au
