A Disney Renaissance ClassicJoin hosts Krissy Lenz and Nathan Blackwell with special guest Mandy Kaplan as they dive under the sea to explore Disney's animation breakthrough The Little Mermaid. This 1989 film marked the beginning of the Disney Renaissance and set the template for modern Disney princess stories with its memorable songs and colorful characters. The trio discusses how this film revolutionized Disney animation, introducing the now-standard "I Want" song with "Part of Your World" (which executives initially wanted to cut!). They explore how Ariel represented a new kind of Disney princess: rebellious, independent, and actively pursuing her dreams, even if those dreams involved marrying a handsome prince at sixteen. From Ursula's divine inspiration (literally—she was modeled after drag queen Divine) to the spectacular voice talents of Jodi Benson, Pat Carroll, and Buddy Hackett, the podcast examines what made this film so magical. They also hilariously point out the movie's scientific inaccuracies and questionable life lessons while acknowledging its undeniable charm and cultural impact.Key topics covered:How The Little Mermaid launched the Disney RenaissanceThe groundbreaking songwriting and animation techniquesScientific inaccuracies that plague the underwater worldAriel's questionable decision-making as a lovestruck teenagerPerfect villain creation with Ursula the sea witchThe hidden Disney princess dress references in Ariel's pink gownVoice actor highlights, including Mandy's date with the voice of Prince Eric! The film's enduring legacy and influence on subsequent Disney filmsDeep cut recommendations including Robin Hood, Enchanted, and the Descendants franchiseWhether you're a Disney adult or just appreciate the film's artistic significance, this episode captures why The Little Mermaid continues to enchant audiences decades later. As Krissy notes, "Whatever the magic is, they've got it." In this episode we look at how an evil 1st century apocalyptic blood cult that secretly and not so secretly controls much of our lives with its over represented influence on media and politics is terrified of Disney. After the spooky month we've had it's time for a fun family friendly palate cleanser. If you look for lists of Disney witches you will find there is somewhere in the region of 140 of them. Disney had already created an impressive catalogue of witches by the time the company embarked on its first feature length film, so it came as no surprise their first feature length film antagonist would be a witch. Which is where we start our list of cameo special guest stars like The Evil Queen, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Magic mirror on the wall, American Film Institute, Hannibal Lector from Silence of the Lambs, Barbie, Regan MacNeil from The Exorcist, The Wicked Witch of the West from The Wizard of Oz, Lucille La Verne, Babes in the Woods, Hansel and Gretel, Brother's Grimm, Ursula, the Sea Witch from The Little Mermaid, Ariel, Eve, Garden of Eden, Bea Arthur, Rosanne Barr, Elaine Stritch, Pat Carroll, Shakespeare, Devine, Deborah Bunting, The Owl House, Bulletin of Atomic Scientists, American Family Association, One Million Moms, Jamie Gooch, Ron Desantis, Vanessa Hudgens, Dead Hot: Season of the Witch, GG Magree, Salem, Bounding Into Comics, Jacob Smith, High School Musical and Kevin Sorbo on the comeback trail. The Little Mermaid is a literary fairy tale written by the Danish author Hans Christian Andersen, first published in 1837 as part of a collection of fairy tales for children. The story follows the journey of a young mermaid who is willing to give up her life in the sea as a mermaid to gain a human soul. The original story has been a subject of multiple analyses by scholars such as Jacob Bøggild and Pernille Heegaard, as well as the folklorist Maria Tatar. These analyses cover various aspects of the story, from interpreting the themes to discussing why Andersen chose to write a tragic story with a happy ending. It has been adapted to various media, including musical theatre, anime, ballet, opera, and film. There is also a statue portraying the mermaid in Copenhagen, Denmark, where the story was written and first published. The Little Mermaid is a 1989 American animated musical fantasy film produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation and released by Walt Disney Pictures. The 28th Disney animated feature film, it is loosely based on the 1837 Danish fairy tale of the same name by Hans Christian Andersen. The film was written and directed by John Musker and Ron Clements and produced by Musker and Howard Ashman, who also wrote the film's songs with Alan Menken. Menken also composed the film's score. Featuring the voices of Jodi Benson, Christopher Daniel Barnes, Pat Carroll, Samuel E. Wright, Jason Marin, Kenneth Mars, and Buddy Hackett, The Little Mermaid tells the story of a teenage mermaid princess named Ariel, who dreams of becoming human and falls in love with a human prince named Eric, which leads her to make a magic deal with the sea witch, Ursula, to become human and be with him. The Little Mermaid was released to theaters on November 17, 1989, to critical acclaim, earning praise for the animation, music, and characters. It was also a commercial success, garnering $84 million at the domestic box office during its initial release, and $235 million in total lifetime gross worldwide. Along with the major success of both Disney's 1986 animated film The Great Mouse Detective and the 1988 Disney/Amblin live-action/animated film Who Framed Roger Rabbit, The Little Mermaid is given credit for breathing life back into the art of Disney animated feature films after some films produced by Disney were struggling. It also marked the start of the era known as the Disney Renaissance. The film won two Academy Awards for Best Original Score and Best Original Song ("Under the Sea"). Book Vs. Movie: The Little MermaidThe Hans Christian Anderson Story Vs. the 1989 Disney ClassicThe Margos continue “Disney in December” with the all-time classic 1989 animated feature The Little Mermaid, which began as a fairy tale by Danish author Hans Christian Anderson in 1837. The film was responsible for bringing Disney studios back into animation leaders after decades of so-so films and losing top artists to rival companies. The original story is about a mermaid who lives in an underwater kingdom with her sisters, her father (a Mer-King), and her grandmother, who instructs her that when she is 15 years old, she can swim to the surface to see the world above. Her sisters (who are all older than her) can visit the land for only one day per year. The mermaid (who is never given a name) longs to visit more often and is obsessed with a statue of a human man on the ocean floor. When she finally rises, the Mermaid can see a man (a prince!) on shore, and she falls in love. As luck would have it, his ship wreaks, and she can save him from drowning. As she waits for him to wake up on the shore, a young woman from a nearby temple comes over. She is given credit for saving him, and the Little Mermaid becomes despondent. This is when we learn that mermaids can live up to 300 years undersea, and then they turn into sea foam--without a soul to go to heaven. The Little Mermaid visits a sea which tells her she will give her human legs if she trades with her beautiful voice. Mermaid makes this deal and goes to land. Unfortunately, her new legs feel like daggers as she walks, and the prince likes her well enough, but he loves the woman from the temple whom he thinks saved him from the shipwreck. The Little Mermaid is told by her sisters (who gave up their long hair to the sea witch to get the formula to bring her back underwater) if she visits the prince and his new bride on their honeymoon on a ship, she can stab him in the heart and she will become a mermaid again. Instead, she throws a knife into the water and becomes an “Air Fairy,” If she does good deeds for 300 years, she will go to heaven. The Disney version retells the tale with one of the best villains EVER--Ursula, voiced by the fabulous Pat Carroll and supposedly based partly on the late drag performer Divine. This mermaid is named Ariel, and Alan Menken's music and Howard Asman's lyrics are some of the most memorable in film history. (Try getting “Kiss the Girl” out of your head!) It made hundreds of millions at the box office, and little girls have been cosplaying Ariel for decades. She's not exactly a feminist icon--but the film is a delightful confection and the last of the handpainted Disney films. In this episode, we get into the history of the 1989 film and the children's fairy tale and discuss their differences. Then we choose which we each like better! This episode is sponsored by:Kensington Books and the Rebecca Zanetti novel You Can Hide. Set up against the backdrop of the Pacific Northwest, FBI agent Laurel Snow strives to navigate her complicated family life when her newly discovered sociopathic half-sister becomes the target of a dangerous killer. The Blacklist meets The Profiler meets Justified is how it is described as laurel believes her sister (Abigail) was behind the mysterious disappearance of their father. Abigail shows up to claim someone is out to kill her, and then dead bodies turn up in the icy Sauk River--her sister seems to be the only connection. This book has romance (in the form of Fish and Wildlife Captain Huck Rivers), action, family drama, suspense, and thrills. You can follow Rebecca Zanetti on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok.In this ep the Margos discuss:Hans Christian Anderson's interesting lifeThe significant differences between the book and the movieDisney's post-Little Mermaid success and how it changed the perception of animationThe 1989 cast: Jodi Benson (Ariel,) Christopher Daniel Barnes (Prince Eric,) Pat Carroll (Ursula,) Kenneth Mars (King Triton,) Samuel E. We're making your Yuletide Very Gay this year with a look at two gay holiday movies, Happiest Season (2020) and Single All the Way (2021). That's right, the gay community has finally been included in the genre of "Hallmark Christmas movies" in recent years (because don't we deserve fluffy feel-good holiday stories too?). With minimal conflict and an easy-to-swallow will they/won't they plot, these movies are great for curling up on the couch and letting the warm holiday wishes wash over you. Happiest Season is directed by Clea DuVall and stars Kristen Stewart and Mackenzie Davis as Abby and Harper, a couple heading to (you guessed it) a small town in New England for Christmas. Abby is ready to propose to Harper, but suddenly finds herself retreating into the closet to save face with Harper's conservative family. There is a solid supporting cast propping up the story, especially from Aubrey Plaza as Riley, a former girlfriend of Harper's who Abby finds new friendship with. Meanwhile, you have already forgotten the title of this movie. Single All the Way is directed by Michael Mayer and stars Michael Urie and Philemon Chambers as Peter and Nick, two best friends heading back to (you guessed it) a small town in New England for Christmas. This time, Peter and Nick have to learn to find love in each other's friendship with the help of several meddling family members and a Christmas pageant directed by wacky Aunt Sandy (Jennifer Coolidge). To round out the week, we start tackling the "renaissance" of Disney films that began in the late 80s as we revisit The Little Mermaid and the iconic drag queen sea witch, Ursula. Voiced by Pat Carroll and drawing heavy influence from notorious filth queen Divine, there's definitely no hiding the coding that is happening with this Disney villain, but we can't help but fall back in love with her campy attitude and top-notch villain song. Don't forget the importance of body language, and tune in with Jake and Kevin!

After the United States invaded Iraq and removed Saddam Hussein from power in spring 2003, the city of Fallujah became a hotbed of unrest. In March 2004, four American contractors were brutally murdered and mutilated there. President Bush ordered an attack to subdue the city. This attack was called off early after it sparked a media and political firestorm. With U.S. forces out of it, Fallujah became the red-hot epicenter of Iraq's Sunni insurgency and the U.S. recommitted to taking it through large-scale offensive action. This operation, known as Phantom Fury, lasted from through November and December 2004. It was America's bloodiest battle of the Iraq war. Bing West tells the story in “No True Glory.” We are joined in this episode by Mr. Pat Carroll who spent close to four years in Iraq working in or dealing with Fallujah
