Do you feel guilty when you rest? Do you find yourself saying things like, “I’ll relax after I finish this project.” Or, “I’ll take a day off once work slows down.” Or what about, “I’ll rest when I finally get caught up.” Hint: You will almost never be caught up. If so, you’re not alone. Many high-achievers have unknowingly adopted the belief that rest is something they have to earn. The problem? That mindset often keeps us stuck in a cycle of chronic stress, mental exhaustion, and nervous system dysregulation. In this episode of Making Shift Happen, we’re unpacking one of the biggest productivity myths out there: that your worth is tied to your output. The truth is that recovery isn’t a reward for hard work – it’s a requirement for sustainable performance. Whether you’re trying to improve your health, become more consistent with exercise, perform better at work, or simply feel like yourself again, learning how to rest without guilt may be one of the most important skills you develop. Take the FREE Nervous System Audit here (it’s only 10 questions!): https://forms.gle/hGtZY7P8X5sAtQe26. Learn the signs and how to help yourself – I’m also here to help!

"When we are busy, we are numbed out to this sense of inadequacy that we all know is real. Deep, deep, deep down." ~ Kenna MilleaWhat does it actually look like to be addicted to the hustle and not even realize it?How does staying perpetually busy become a coping strategy for the deeper questions we are afraid to sit with? What if the solution to your busyness is not better time management, but a ruthless commitment to doing less?In episode 103 of This Whole Life, Pat and Kenna Millea get honest about their own addiction to hustle. Drawing on John Mark Comer's The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry, they explore why so many of us, including two licensed therapists who know better, cannot seem to slow down, and what our busyness is really covering up.They dig into the spiritual roots of hurry, why John Mark Comer calls it the greatest threat to the interior life, and how the Catholic social tradition has been telling us for over a century that work was made for man, not the other way around. Kenna shares a moment from her own therapy that reframed everything: the possibility that her anxiety has been masking depression all along, and that staying busy is the most productive-looking way to avoid sitting with the hard questions of the human experience. Pat gets equally honest about the cost of hurry in his own fatherhood, admitting that far too often he is yelling at his kids not because of what they are doing, but because he is in a hurry and their seven-year-old slowness is incompatible with his schedule. They close with four practical S's from Comer's book: silence and solitude, Sabbath, simplicity, and slowing. The challenge is to pick just one and try it for a week. This episode is for anyone who has answered "how are you doing?" with "so busy" and quietly wondered why that answer feels both true and empty at the same time.Chapters: (00:00) - Cold Open (00:37) - Welcome and Episode Intro (01:47) - Lightning Round: 90 Seconds with Kenna (09:39) - Highs and Hards (16:07) - Why We Might Be the Worst People to Host This Episode (17:46) - The Spiritual Roots of Busyness (21:41) - The Mental and Emotional Cost of Hurry (34:12) - Busyness as a Coping Strategy (42:47) - The Louis C.K. At 16, She was Addicted, Homeless, and Suicidal. Today, She Trains the FBI. | Dr. Abbie Maroño Nobody Came to Save Her What happens when a sixteen-year-old girl realizes that nobody is coming to save her? For Dr. Abbie Maroño, that realization became the turning point that changed everything. Long before she was training members of the FBI, Secret Service, Homeland Security, and Interpol, she was battling addiction, homelessness, despair, and a growing certainty that her life was headed toward tragedy. Then came a moment of reckoning. A moment where she understood that waiting for rescue was no longer an option. She would either save herself or lose herself. In this deeply personal and intellectually fascinating conversation, Dov Baron sits down with one of the world's leading experts in human behavior to explore the forces that shape influence, trust, belonging, shame, trauma, resilience, and personal transformation. Together they unpack why people make decisions about us before we've finished speaking, how social engineering really works, why belonging may be humanity's deepest psychological need, and why healing is not a destination but a lifelong process. This is not a conversation about becoming perfect. It's a conversation about becoming conscious. In This Episode • How people form impressions before logic enters the conversation • The science behind influence and persuasion • What social engineering really is • Why belonging drives so much human behavior • The hidden power of shame • Healthy shame versus toxic shame • Addiction, trauma, and recovery • Why success doesn't automatically heal emotional wounds • How childhood experiences continue shaping adulthood • What the world's top security agencies understand about trust • Why healing is a lifelong journey Website:https://www.abbiemarono.com Instagram: @drabbieofficial LinkedIn: Dr. Abbie Maroño Memorable Quotes "Nobody was coming." We begin with Denise Carter, who in 2024 sent a 32-page, laminated binder to her ex-boyfriend's new girlfriend titled “Things He Will Eventually Do To You”. It apparently took three months to compile and featured detailed relationship data, flowcharts, screenshots, and witness accounts and it's gone viral again so naturally we need to discuss. Then it's onto the Socceroos and the FIFA World Cup, the Socceroos team truly reflects Australia as it is now, and Em reckons that the politicians and the media using immigrants to divide us, are about to witness Australia truly come together around the glorious multicultural players of the Socceroos team. John Medina's short film, The Cure Complex, explores the epidemic of drug addiction in prison and the systemic failures that perpetuate Substance Use Disorder (SUD) in the prison system. "Recovery is an industry, and industries need customers. Rehabs don't succeed when people move on, they succeed when people stay," says Medina, whose own journey through addiction and incarceration motivated him to be an agent of change. His film highlights the importance of addressing the root causes of substance use — including trauma, poverty and isolation. Nationally, approximately 58% of the US prison population has active SUD. In California, where Medina's film is based, it's 65%. Yet, treatment behind bars is limited, inconsistent and often deadly. Only 15% of those assessed as needing help actually receive it. "True recovery isn't about quitting something, it's about building something,” says Medina. By investing in people, not just prescriptions, we can build more humane and effective pathways to healing addiction and staying clean, so that people can move onto meaningful and productive lives. Sadly, the current system, through ineffective, "evidence-based" practices, actually keeps people dependent on substances from which Big Pharma extracts enormous profit. Medina's raw and touching film uncovers how these profit-driven systems trap individuals in cycles of dependency through fear and control instead of empowering them to rebuild their lives. The film champions new and humane healing models that prioritize promoting self worth and purpose to manifest healing and dignity. Medina is a proud Film Ambassador with Represent Justice, and The Cure Complex was selected to be one of five Represent Justice films streamed on Tubi to 100 million viewers. Most of us think of anxiety as something to get rid of. We treat it as the enemy. But according to psychotherapist Owen O'Kane, the harder we fight anxiety, the more power we can give it. A former NHS clinical lead for mental health in London, he believes many people can get trapped in habits that keep anxiety alive. We become addicted to constant busyness, overthinking, checking, planning, worrying, and trying to stay one step ahead of every possible problem. In his new book, O'Kane argues that the goal isn't to defeat anxiety but to understand it. By changing our relationship with anxiety, he says, we can break the patterns that keep us stuck. The book is called Addicted to Anxiety: How to Break the Habit.

And for nearly three decades, he was also dying.By the time he reached his breaking point, he had almost no teeth left, weighed barely seven stone, and believed it was over. In 2007, he went into rehab. Today he is 19 years clean and sober. But this episode is not about that story. It is about what came after.Tony does not arrive with a polished redemption arc. He arrives with the version most people never tell — the rock bottom that happened six years into sobriety, when the substances were gone but the behaviour was not. Sex addiction. Drama. Ego. Homelessness again. The slow, humiliating realisation that getting clean is only the beginning. We go back to the beginning too. A Battersea council estate. A family soaked in addiction. A child who learned by age three that being ill got him attention, and built an entire survival strategy around chaos and crisis long before he ever touched a drink or a drug. Tony traces the through-line from that child to the man who, years into recovery, was still running the same patterns — performing in meetings, manipulating sponsors, using recovery itself as the newest addiction. What unfolds is a masterclass in the difference between sobriety and recovery. Tony breaks down powerlessness and what it actually means once you are no longer using it as an excuse. He talks about the 12 steps with the authority of someone who has both lived them and failed them. He is forensic about amends — why early apologies in recovery are almost always self-serving, why his own father told him to come back when he actually knew what he was apologising for, and why the only amends that count are the ones you live rather than speak. He also talks about sponsorship with a level of honesty that is rare. Picking sponsors to manipulate. Sponsoring people he was attracted to. The moment he finally got a sponsor who would not let him perform his way through the steps — and how that person changed everything.Tony's new book, Recover Me, is the book he had to write after his memoir I Don't Take Requests told the world a version of the story he had not yet been fully honest about. He talks about recording the audiobook and hearing himself read things he had previously suppressed. The shame versus embarrassment distinction that freed him. The moment he realised the more honest he became, the more free he felt. This conversation ends not in darkness but in something quieter and more powerful than just being drug free. Tony talks about the pinch-me moments that only become visible when chaos is no longer the baseline. From looking at his dog asleep in the morning to DJing to twenty thousand people and knowing the real success is simply waking up and being glad to be alive.Oliver is an ambassador for Alcohol Change UK, support here - https://tinyurl.com/5dt5773eSponsor -www.gavinsisters.co.ukpromo code SCHOOLOFROCKBOTTOM for 10% off!Support the pod https://www.paypal.me/olivermason1paypalTopics -0:00 Trailer & Intro4:10 A rock bottom moment7:00 Sex addiction8:30 Attention was my first drug!11:00 Addicted do drama?!13:30 Was Tony born an addict?16:50 Breaking the stigma20:30 Helping others23:45 Are war stories important?26:45 Is Tony powerless?32:30 Changing meetings34:15 Anonymous?!35:50 Recovery and self validation37:45 Shop around for recovery40:50 Tony gets really honest43:50 Guilt vs shame45:45 Making amends51:15 Sponsorship54:15 The 90/10 rule55:45 Pinch moments & recovery58:10 Turn anxiety into drive!Follow Tony Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/dj_fattony_Tony's new book -https://geni.us/Recover_Me”Follow Oliverhttps://linktr.ee/olivermasonLinksYouTube - https://tinyurl.com/276aa99dApple - https://tinyurl.com/y3n2chk3
What if addiction isn't the real problem? In this powerful and deeply honest conversation, Steve Adams sits down with author, speaker, and storyteller Jon Seidl to discuss his new book, Confessions of a Christian Alcoholic. Jon shares his journey through anxiety, trauma, addiction, recovery, and ultimately deeper intimacy with Christ.Together they explore why addiction often begins long before substance abuse, how unresolved wounds shape our behaviors, the danger of hidden struggles in the Church, and why true freedom comes not from behavior modification but from healing the deeper places of the heart.Whether your struggle is alcohol, work, pornography, approval, control, comfort, food, success, or something else entirely, this conversation is for you. Author Thomas Thatcher joins John Curren to dismantle the biggest myth in personal development: that suffering comes from what happens to us. Thomas explains how suffering is created by the stories we attach to pain, why people cling to those stories for the payoff, and how he nearly lost his life to one of his own. This episode is a direct, no‑nonsense guide to separating fact from fiction, reclaiming your power, and choosing a future based on commitment instead of complaint.

Why do some of us swear we want peace… yet somehow find ourselves knee-deep in the same chaos we said we were done with? In this episode, we get all the way honest about our relationship with dysfunction - the kind we grew up in, the kind we've normalized, and the kind we accidentally recreate as adults. With our signature Straight Up Sisters blend of humor, soul, and "girl, SAME," we unpack: • Why familiar chaos can feel safer than unfamiliar calm • How childhood survival modes show up in our adult relationships • The dopamine hit of drama (yes, that's a thing) • Breaking the cycle and choosing peace without feeling "bored" This is the episode for anyone who's ever prayed for stability but still answered chaos' texts at 2AM. We're talking healing, accountability, and learning how to stop mistaking emotional roller coasters for love, passion, or personality. Come ready to laugh, reflect, and maybe drag yourself a little, all with love. Because if you're addicted to chaos… sis, you are not alone. And yes, you can detox from dysfunction. Thank God! __________________________________ Follow us on IG and TikTok: @straightupsistersthepodcast @lasusie @raqcsworld YouTube: Straight Up Sisters Podcast Contact us: hello@straightupsisters.com FULL EPISODE: www.patreon.com/straightupsisters

Dane Sanders watched his best friend Tim Kruger — an Ironman triathlete — die of stomach cancer at 50. Tim's parting insight: "I'm really glad I practiced voluntary discomfort before involuntary discomfort chose me." That single line became the foundation of everything Dane has built since. When a son or daughter is caught in addiction, parents often discover that the loving responses that worked in earlier years are no longer effective. In this week's episode, Kim and Michelle Humphrey return to share what happened after they found support through PAL (Parents of Addicted Loved Ones). As they connected with other parents facing similar struggles, they began to realize they were not alone. That simple truth became a turning point in their journey. Through PAL, they gained a deeper understanding of addiction and learned that healthy parental love often looks different when a teen or adult child is dependent on drugs. As Kim and Michelle grew in wisdom, support, and encouragement, they began to heal even while their sons continued to struggle. Instead of being controlled by fear, guilt, and isolation, they learned how to establish healthier responses and trust God with what they could not control. Dawn began to break through the darkness. Today, Kim serves as Executive Director of PAL, and together he and Michelle help other families find the same hope and healing they experienced. Their story is a powerful reminder that parents can move toward health and freedom, even in the midst of a loved one's addiction. (WATCH THIS EPISODE ON YOUTUBE) Today, 98% of all federal criminal cases are resolved with a guilty plea. Why? "Half a loaf is better than none. . . . When we have a weak case for any reason, we'll reduce to almost anything rather than lose." In modern America, "beyond a reasonable doubt" as determined by a jury has largely been replaced by the discretion of prosecutors to punish defendants for exercising their constitutional right to a trial by jury. So much so, defendants in pretrial detention are agreeing to plea "bargains" at a rate so high, it's difficult to deny the obvious: Innocence is irrelevant. Reb is joined by Hannah Bogen, a Federal Public Defender in the Office of the FPD for the Central District of California, the largest public defense office in the federal system. Hannah shares her firsthand experience with indigent defense, pretrial detention, plea bargaining, and sentencing policy—a rare glimpse into the real lives of her clients in the federal criminal system, and public defenders' enduring fight for dignity and mercy for the people whom society often forgets...Until it happens to you. **DISCLAIMER: The views and opinions discussed in this episode are personal to Hannah and Reb and do not reflect the views or opinions of the Office of the Federal Public Defender.** A huge thank you to Hannah Bogen for her time and unforgettable insight for this episode, and a gracious nod to the Offices of the Federal Public Defender in Los Angeles and around the country.
