The burden of mental illness in Australia is incredibly high and at the heart of the response are unpaid carers, providing daily support to people living with mental illness. This type of caring can have all sorts of different impacts and can often lead to poor mental health, physical health and severe financial stress for the carers themselves. In today's episode of the Care Mosaic, you are going to hear about how this plays out in daily life for Wendy and Nicole, both of whom care for someone with a mental illness. This episode of the Care Mosaic explores the assumption that when a loved one goes into formal care, such as a nursing home or supported living accommodation, the caring role stops. However, this is often not the case. Today we are speaking to Peter and Julie, two carers who know firsthand that a caring role does not simply stop because their care recipient has gone into full time care – their role only changes. Welcome to the first edition of the Care Mosaic, a podcast that explores the challenges that unpaid carers face on a daily basis. Today we will be hearing from Pru and Kylie who, despite being optimistic about the role they play in the lives of the people they care for, are not the biggest fans of the term carer. Make yourself a cuppa and sit back as we hear how these women came to be carers, what caring means for them and the assumptions we might need to change to make the term carer one that better matches their experiences. The podcast, titled The Care Mosaic, explores the challenges unpaid carers face on a daily basis. Evan Wallace, podcast host, says of the series “Carers come from all different walks of life and the nature of care they provide looks incredibly different. Some individuals may have cared for a loved one for most of their life, whereas for others it could be for a short and potentially challenging period.” Each episode looks at a particular type of caring relationship, including young carers, carers supporting their ageing parents and carers who are partners - focusing on the nature of the caring relationship and how the care relationship features within other aspects of their life. The stories also touch on the support carers have received, including Carer Gateway. Carer Gateway is a free service that supports anyone who is an unpaid carer looking after someone with a disability, mental illness, a medical condition or who is frail due to age. The support includes counselling, coaching, group support, respite and skills courses. Contact Carer Gateway on https://www.carergateway.gov.au/ or call 1800 422 737 Watch this space for full length interviews with our carers.
