Key PointsRod describes his transformation from opioid addiction as "night and day" explaining that he now has hope, a house, and family whereas previously he had nothing.Medical complications began in 2015 when Rod developed gallstones stuck in his pancreatic duct, leading to gallbladder removal surgery followed by seven months of hospitalization with fentanyl, lauded, or morphine administered every four hours.Hospital discharge resulted in doctors prescribing 250-500 pills at a time with instructions to return for more if needed, leading Rod to take twice the recommended dosage without experiencing withdrawal symptoms.Rod died on the operating table during April 2015 surgery with doctors calling his children to say goodbye, but he survived and spent another seven months in the hospital bed receiving intravenous drugs every four hours.Five years of cycling between hospital admissions and discharges followed, with Rod spending 15 months out of two years hospitalized, yet no doctor ever suggested he might be addicted to the medications being administered.Recognition of addiction never occurred to Rod during this period, as he genuinely believed he was sick and had no awareness of his dependency on opioids.A friend's suggestion to try marijuana came after Rod's girlfriend left and he had deteriorated to 150 pounds, appearing gaunt and pale, despite his initial 35-year abstinence from cannabis due to anti-drug beliefs.Cannabis immediately eliminated the nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea that characterized Rod's opioid withdrawal symptoms, which doctors had been misdiagnosing as pancreatitis and treating with more opioids.Additional health improvements from cannabis use included elimination of atrial fibrillation, cessation of cigarette smoking, and complete sobriety from alcohol since 2014.Rod's lowest point involved suicidal ideation until his two-year-old granddaughter sat on his lap and fell asleep, making him realize he couldn't leave her to deal with his death.Multiple family members and friends have died from opioid-related overdoses, including his best friend's son from heroin in 2015, a cousin from fentanyl-laced cocaine on Christmas morning, and two nieces currently struggling with methadone or heroin addiction.Transition from opioids to cannabis occurred overnight without difficulty, and Rod has not required hospitalization since beginning cannabis use, contrasting sharply with his previous constant medical interventions.Rod argues that cannabis serves as a "gateway drug" away from harmful substances toward better health, citing his own experience and noting that marijuana withdrawal causes only temporary irritability without life-threatening complications.All of Rod's current doctors are aware of his cannabis use and none have advised him to stop, though they have recommended against alcohol consumption, suggesting medical professionals recognize cannabis benefits despite legal restrictions. This Halloween marks 10 years of stories from Rod and Steve; to mark the holiday and our tenth anniversary, we're going to take you deep into the dark side of Appalachia with two chilling tales from southwest Virginia. First, Steve tells the story of three strange sisters who ran girls' schools in Murfreesboro and Christiansburg—women whispered to be linked to evil spirits and who eventually faced justice for a terrible crime. Some say their spirits still haunt the ground where their school stood in Christiansburg over a hundred years ago. Then, Rod shares the legend of two cunning sisters from Scott County, whose greed and cruelty led to a savage end. Things Discussed: OFFENSE Bryce Underwood had has best game yet. Throws down the middle of the field can beat ANYTHING. His RPO reads are on point. Chip is doing a great job with him. How do they keep finding these TEs? Michigan made a lot of young guy mistakes but also overcame them because they have kids who can step up. Max Bredeson for Heisman? PFF numbers on him don't capture what he does. The split stretch trap TD was a *READ* by Bredeson!!! Offensive philosophies: One school of thought (Lloyd, Harbaugh) is if you option you let the defense call the plays. Other school of thought (Chip, Malzahn) is take what they give you. Post-Gattis, M ran maybe three RPOs/season. Blake Frazier: Still not super strong but that agility is visible. Ryan Hayes as a RS Fr would have looked like this. In the break: Sam Webb's football career, Craig praises Seth/Brian, Seth says there are MSU guys who would do this sort of thing (e.g. Chris Vannini) if they had the fanbase to support it. Michigan fans want to KNOW more than they want to believe. DEFENSE USC gameplan vs the Washington gameplan. This was the Ohio State 2024 gameplan: play four against the run, 75% two-deep, lots of QQH, and invite the opponent to screw up. Will Howard, Demond Williams: these are college QBs. If you give them enough opportunities to make hard reads they'll screw up and throw it at a defender. This has gotta be hard for Wink because if you play this way against an NFL team you'll get shredded. Vanilla defense unlocked fast play from their linebackers. Yay Michigan went away from Bear fronts against 2 TEs on the field. This is hard for Wink, but he's not good at disguising fire blitzes, and believes he does. Got away with it at the Ravens because he had great man coverage defenders. He needs to use less of them to keep them effective. They still got taken advantage of on passing downs in this game. Edge defense: only one Barham went too high incident, which is VERY GOOD! Hutch would have games with 1 or 2 and I'd praise him to the heavens. Need to calibrate. M mixing more man into their coverages. Jordan Young out there at the end of the half—that kind of stuff has to stop. Young is young Rod Moore, but at this stage it's Rod against Washington in 2021 not Rod against OSU—Rod needed time to become the guy who could start against Ohio State.
