Chances are, you’ve supported someone going through a tough time. And while the meaning sustains the sacrifice, today we want to support you ….. supporting them. A bit of support inception, if you will. To guide us through this incredibly complex and meaningful topic is our resident psychologist, Dr Emily Musgrove. Navigating relationships requires awareness. Showing up as a partner, friend, parent, or sibling while holding space for pain – without being overwhelmed – is a skill that takes practice. Reminding us that no one hates their struggle more than the person suffering, Dr Em delves into some practical strategies of support, such as walking the line between respect and care, as well as always understanding the difference between effort and capacity. To all of the supporters and carers listening, we see you. We love you. And we hope you felt held, too. Carers are people who provide unpaid care and support to someone who needs help with their day-to-day living, who has a disability, mental health condition, or any health condition requiring care and assistance. Carer Gateway is an Australian Government program providing support to carers. The program's digital photographic exhibition 'Real Carers Real Stories - In Their Own Words' features ten carers. Aakriti Chhetri is one of the unpaid carers. She provides support to her friends Himanshu and Neha who live with muscular dystrophy. Work with Purpose: A podcast about the Australian Public Service.
Across Australia, there are 2.65 million people who dedicate their lives to caring for family members or friends with disabilities, chronic illnesses, or age-related conditions. These unpaid carers, often unsung heroes, face financial hardship due to limited income opportunities, paired with the significant cost of care. Whilst caring can greatly expand someone's skill set, carers also shoulder immense emotional pressures as they navigate the demanding and complex landscape of care provision for their loved ones.In this episode of Work with Purpose, our host Caroline Walsh, CEO of IPAA ACT, has a meaningful conversation about carers and how workplaces can support them with our guests, some of whom also share their own personal experience as carers. Joining us are Robyn Shannon, acting deputy secretary of the Department of Social Services, Lisa Kelly, CEO of Carers ACT, and Alex Allars, executive branch manager, Whole of Government Industrial Relations & Public Sector Employment, Treasury and Economic Development Directorate, ACT Government. This episode examines the public support mechanisms for carers at both the federal and ACT levels, and explores how these systems may need to evolve in the future.Discussed in this episode:The Impact of caring responsibilities and the differing needs of carer cohortsGovernment initiatives like the Carer Gateway, payments, and the planned National Carers StrategyThe ACT government efforts to support carers in workplaces and the effects on productivity and engagementAdvocacy and engagement with carers in policymakingVisions for an ideal carer-supportive Australia.Show notes:Disability and Carers | Department of Social ServicesAustralia's 2.65 million carers urged to weigh up their vote in light of parties' responses to commitment to Carers Australia's election survey | Carers AustraliaWho is a Carer? | Carers AustraliaTerms of Reference | Inquiry into the Recognition of Unpaid Carers | Parliament of AustraliaACT Carers Strategy | ACT Community ServicesCarer Gateway | Australian GovernmentGetting a payment if you're a carer - Caring for someone | Services AustraliaCarers can contact the Carer Gateway by calling 1800 422 737 or visiting the Carer Gateway website to see what services and supports are available to help in their caring role. For anyone who would like to know more about payment assistance including eligibility and how to apply they can contact Services Australia by calling 132 717 or on the Services Australia website. Mandy and Kate chat with Helen Bourke-Taylor - a paediatric occupational therapist and Associate Professor at Monash University's Department of Occupational Therapy. Helen has 32 years of experience working with children with disabilities and their families in Australia and in the USA. Helen developed a focus on mothers while working with their children and completed a PhD in 2010 that investigated the health and experiences of mothers. Since then, Helen has developed a program called Healthy Mothers Healthy Families, which is the longest-running, most effective program for mothers of children with disabilities in the world. The award-winning program offers free workshops, a free self-paced website and training for paediatric OTs to better support Pea mums. Mandy has completed the course and rated it “magic”. Helen is passionate about supporting mothers and doesn't intend to stop advocating for them anytime soon. She sees her role as metaphorically watering and shining sunshine onto Peas, and ensuring that they feel seen and validated in their role. Helen, Mandy and Kate have a long, nourishing chat about the benefits and research findings of the Healthy Mothers, Healthy Families program and the vital importance of Pea mums finding time to look after their own physical and mental health and wellbeing, to ensure a healthy and happy life for their families. Thank you so much Helen for caring for us! Peas, sign up for the next program on the Kindred website. It's free and designed just for you, and builds on the wisdom of over 1500 Peas that have contributed to the development and evaluation of the program over several years. Welcome to the first edition of the Care Mosaic, a podcast that explores the challenges that unpaid carers face on a daily basis. Today we will be hearing from Pru and Kylie who, despite being optimistic about the role they play in the lives of the people they care for, are not the biggest fans of the term carer. Make yourself a cuppa and sit back as we hear how these women came to be carers, what caring means for them and the assumptions we might need to change to make the term carer one that better matches their experiences. This episode of the Care Mosaic explores the assumption that when a loved one goes into formal care, such as a nursing home or supported living accommodation, the caring role stops. However, this is often not the case. Today we are speaking to Peter and Julie, two carers who know firsthand that a caring role does not simply stop because their care recipient has gone into full time care – their role only changes. The burden of mental illness in Australia is incredibly high and at the heart of the response are unpaid carers, providing daily support to people living with mental illness. This type of caring can have all sorts of different impacts and can often lead to poor mental health, physical health and severe financial stress for the carers themselves. In today's episode of the Care Mosaic, you are going to hear about how this plays out in daily life for Wendy and Nicole, both of whom care for someone with a mental illness. You can contact Carer Gateway on www.carergateway.gov.au or you can phone 1800 422 737 Monday to Friday between 8am and 5pm

The podcast, titled The Care Mosaic, explores the challenges unpaid carers face on a daily basis. Evan Wallace, podcast host, says of the series “Carers come from all different walks of life and the nature of care they provide looks incredibly different. Some individuals may have cared for a loved one for most of their life, whereas for others it could be for a short and potentially challenging period.” Each episode looks at a particular type of caring relationship, including young carers, carers supporting their ageing parents and carers who are partners - focusing on the nature of the caring relationship and how the care relationship features within other aspects of their life. The stories also touch on the support carers have received, including Carer Gateway. Carer Gateway is a free service that supports anyone who is an unpaid carer looking after someone with a disability, mental illness, a medical condition or who is frail due to age. The support includes counselling, coaching, group support, respite and skills courses. Most parents facing lockdown and homeschooling start pacing rapidly, pulling out tuffs of hair. Being forced to stay at home with small children, without access to parks and other distractions can be challenging. So if it's hard for those of us with able-bodied children, how are carers faring when they are cut off from the supports they need on a daily basis? Elena Katrakis is the CEO of Carers NSW. She explains how the lockdown has impacted carers in Australia, how carers can try to access support (through The Carer Gateway) and how we might help those caring for others.
