In the brand new series 'baddies', where we take a look at the most infamous criminals, we dive deep into the shady life of gangster Al Capone. Murder, bribery and pimping hung over him like a cloud his entire life, but that didn't stop the people from praising him like a Robin Hood like figure.. until they came to their senses and realised he was a cold blooded killer. After all the unspeakable crimes he committed, he was locked up over rather mundane charges.
In 1920, Wall Street fell victim to a terrorist attack that killed over 30 people. The police investigated everything from shady flyers to crazy tennis players, but never found out who was behind the terrible bombing. Today, we are going over all the possible suspects, some of which were wearing three suits at the same time, while others weren't even on the same continent as the incident. Today we take a look at all the ways to not do sports. Please don't organize a marathon like the 1904 olympic race, where people where chased of track by wild dogs and others cheated by hitching a ride. Please don't fake an injury like the harlequins with 'bloodgate', because no one will end up the better. And please, don't pull the old as dirt trick of pretending to be one person with your twin, just to win the ultramarathon the Comrades in South Africa. Today, we learn about polio, one of humankinds most glorious succes stories. We talk about what the virus does to your body and about how we dealt with this terrible illness through the ages. For many decades, polio panic was real and it was everywhere, but today, the virus is only endemic in 3 countries. Yes! Another episode of 'On The Map', where we zoom in on a specific country. This time, I talk about Kazakhstan. We discuss the city of Otrar and all the adventures it has been through and we take a look at the women that might have been the real life Amazonian Warriors!
Haha is the new mini series that I started because I have had a shitty week and I wanted something to laugh about. That's it. If you had a shitty week as well, skip the first 5 minutes of the episode and laugh and learn with me about the Mola Mola fish, an animal so stupid, natural selection seems to have forgotten about it. If you have had a good week, listen to the first 5 minutes as well, to learn about all the things going wrong in the Netherlands. I promise, afterwards, you will need a good laugh. Reach me at my twitter: @inthemorningpod or send me an email: firstthingspod@gmail.com.
In this new series, we thank heroes from history, who made the world a better place. In this episode we learn all about Emma Goldman, A woman who could not be silenced and fought for a better world and helped people until the bitter end. Thanks, Emma!
Today, we talk about phobias. Why is it that some people are scared of clowns but are completely fine with spiders, while others have a very hard time with social interaction? How come that our brain might interpret a harmless little mouse as a threat to our life? Learn all about it on today's new episode! Follow the podcast on twitter @inthemorningpod for any updates! Or contact me via email: firstthingspodcast@gmail.com See you next time!
Today, we started yet another mini-series. Go Down In History will be a series where we talk about anything history related! In the first episode, we cover the famous stonewall riots, a truely iconic event. We learn that mayors may be shitty, and papers may be very rude, but there will always be people who defend their right to love and live!
Today we are taking a look at Ethiopia, in the first episode of the mini series "on the map", where we zoom in on a specific country or place and learn all about it. This episode is full of good stuff, like ancient artifacts, the first of our kind (well, kind of our kind) and female presidents. I have also learned that I need to move away from the microphone a bit and perhaps stop moving my fingers on the table top, so be ready for *slightly* better audio next time!
Hi! In this episode: Antarctica, weird fish and lots of microbes. We discussed Lake Vostok, Lake Whillan and Blood Falls. You think mornings are cold? Imagine what its like for the translucent zombiefish of Lake Whillans! As it turns out, I cant drop a picture of Blood Falls here as I promised, but check out the pictures on twitter @firstthingsinthemorning! And please consider rating and reviewing the podcast on Apple Podcast
