NB. Due to issues during the recording, the sound quality is somewhat lower than normal. In the recent memoir of Indian star author and activist Arundhati Roy, Mother Mary Comes to Me, we are given the raw and honest story of Roy's life and childhood with a many faceted mother who was far from easy to live with.Arundhati Roy's mother Mary took her two small children and left her alcoholic husband, brought her own family to court in order to abolish the discriminatory inheritance laws in her home state, and built a unique school that made her a beloved and almost mythical figure of her community and beyond. Towards Roy and her brother, however, she was volatile, sharp and cruel. Still, Roy insists that this forced her to see the world from different vantage point, turning her into the writer she is today. The memoir also depicts Roy's own path, leaving home for a world of film, literature and activism, towards a backdrop of India's growing Hindu nationalist movement, spearheaded by Modi. We witness Roy's incessant fights against this movement, on behalf of the environment, of local communities and minorities. As in Roy's earlier literature, Mother Mary Comes to Me shows us how the personal and political is intimately linked for all of us. Roy portrays her own path as well as those around her with both warmth and bite, in the precise, inventive, and deeply original language that has become one of her distinctive features.Arundhati Roy is the author of the Booker prize winning The God of Small Things, The Ministry of Utmost Happiness and a number of non-fiction books, including My Seditious Heart, Kashmir: The Case for Freedom og Walking with the Comrades. At the House of Literature, Roy was joined by poet and writer Athena Farrokhzad, for a conversation about her mother, her childhood, and becoming the writer and activist she is today. Someone once wrote, “War is Hell”. Well, the same thing could be said for this latest run of my Apology Tour. We just watched a season 6 two-parter of M*A*S*H., a show that up until this point I had only seen the end credits of as a kid whenever I was waiting for something else to come on TV. It's not that the show is bad, mind you, I just can't shake the feeling that one of my co-hosts, a die hard M*A*S*H. fan, is giving me evil eyes whenever I don't laugh along with the audience laugh track. We'll see if I make it through this leg of the tour without getting beaten by my friends with the old “soap in a sock” routine. Anyway, I'm your host, Dave, and joining me on this tour of duty are fellow TV-philes and brothers/sisters in arms, Mike and special guest: Janna. Topics of discussion in this episode include as background on Klinger's whole deal and his (more than likely) eventual turn to madness; Dave's Hawkeye impression could use some serious work; and finally, we try to explain Alan Alda's animal magnetism. Be sure to rate, review and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts. You can also Like Us on Facebook, or shoot us an email at apocalypsevideopod@gmail.com  That'll do it for this episode, folks. Now, if you'll excuse me, I think I need to get the hell out of here. I think I see the rest of my unit in the shadows creeping over to my bunk…and they're carrying socks…

Rosemary Mitchell is a 62-year-old ultrarunner whose story with the Comrades Marathon is as powerful as the race itself. In this episode, I had the honor of sitting down with Rosemary for a heartfelt and inspiring conversation about endurance, tradition, and what it truly means to run with purpose. We explored her personal journey—how challenges and setbacks shaped her path—and what it took to conquer the emotional and physical demands of Comrades. Rosemary opened up about the meaning behind the Green Number, the incredible community that surrounds this race, and how running continues to transform her life at every age.We also talked about the legacy of Comrades in South Africa, the camaraderie of ultra running, and how age can become a source of strength, not limitation. Her wisdom is a reminder that running is as much about heart as it is about speed.

Two of the London UDA's leading members, far-right activists Frank Portinari and Eddie Whicker, were arrested in Birmingham sting operation in May 1993. A deep dive into the upcoming "No Kings" protest in Spartanburg reveals what the host calls a deceptive grassroots image masking deeper ties to the Upstate South Carolina Democratic Socialists of America—and possibly beyond. With fiery rhetoric, the segment connects the event to a broader narrative of socialist infiltration, Democrat collaboration, and cartel-linked voter manipulation. From a controversial Instagram photo with Rep. Jim Clyburn to allegations of illegal immigrant-driven political schemes, the commentary builds to a national-level accusation: that recent cartel money laundering raids in L.A. struck the heart of a shadow operation funding Democrat campaigns. A hard-hitting exposé on political theater, media silence, and what the host warns could be the makings of a socialist dictatorship.

Then we shift to the French Open, where Carlos Alcaraz outlasted Jannik Sinner in a classic. Gareth asks whether Sinner's loss might be exactly what tennis (and Sinner) needed, and how their rivalry and reputations will shape the sport's next era.Listener Lens (15:50) features a question from listener Simon, returning from an injury-enforced layoff. Ross offers guidance on regaining lost fitness, why retraining happens faster than we think (the 1:2 rule of thumb), and why doing less will eventually give you the right to do more.Center Stage (22:34) is all about carbs, fat, and fuel—sparked by a tweet from Prof Tim Noakes after the Comrades Marathon. Having watched the race, Noakes claimed that “not a single lead athlete tried to ingest 90–120g/hour of carbohydrates,” and that they “know they don't need carbs to win Comrades” because “fat can provide essentially all the required energy.” We put those claims under the Spotlight, and checked with the elites. Turns out, they were targeting exactly those carb intakes. We explore the science and discover a huge capacity to increase fat oxidation as a function of diet, training and exercise intensity. But that doesn't mean carbs don't matter - we dig into evidence that carbs improve performance, delay fatigue, and enhance recovery. The real problem? Extremes. Whether it's high carb or no carb, just because you can doesn't mean you should. And finally (53:44)—Padel and Pickleball are booming. Why are they so popular, and will they dethrone tennis as the world's favourite racket sport?LinksThe article Gareth discusses about Sinner's loss being a win for tennisExample of a study where retraining restores strength to pre-detraining levels in half the time taken to lose them (note this is a study on strength, but the principle remains)Our Podcast interview with Louise Burke, where she explains everything you need to know about fats and carbs, and why fat underperforms as a fuelThe Podlogar study discussed on the show, where we don't burn all the ingested carbohydratesBurke's race walker study, with fat oxidation rates three times higher after fat adaptation, but with reduced economy and impaired performance benefitsVolek's study on fat adapted distance runners, also showing huge fat oxidation capacity Hosted on Acast. Feel free to join the journey from here; it's not mandatory to listen to previous episodes of my running story (which includes parts 1-9 of the Over 50, Sub 20, 5k Project, and two Comrades race reports, from 2022 and 2023) in order to enjoy this one. Previous episodes will provide more context around my running story and provide details about the many lessons I have learned so far. Come along for the journey.
