Stuttering Since '02

In this final episode Season 1 of Stuttering Since ’02, Jared sits down for a conversation with Polly Martin, who was his chemistry teacher for two years. They talk about what it’s like to have a student in class who stutters, and some of the ways Ms. Martin adapted her expectations of Jared in class because of his stutter. In this episode of Stuttering Since ’02, Jared’s grandfather, affectionately known as “Poppy,” sits down to talk about Jared’s stuttering journey. Poppy had a mild stutter as a child, and describes for Jared how he overcame it. As the only family member with personal experience stuttering, Poppy brings a very personal perspective to his grandson’s stutter and was instrumental in Jared making the decision to return to speech therapy after a break of a few years. Before podcasts, the Internet and conventional understanding of speech pathology, it was a very different experience for young people who stuttered. A family friend who has watched Jared on his journey also grew up with a stutter. It was a completely different era, though, and Kevin faced bullying, misunderstanding and a dearth of resources compared to what is available today. In this episode of Stuttering Since '02, Jared's older brother Ethan joins the conversation. The two talk about what it was like to grow up with a sibling who stutters, some of the times when Ethan noticed Jared's stutter more than others, and Ethan's advice for other siblings of kids who stutter. In this episode of Stuttering Since ’02, Jared and his dad talk about Jared’s speech over the years, including memories of recent high and low points. They talk about friends and family who stutter and what it was like for Jared to meet them and talk with them. Jared’s dad was with him when he spoke with a class of graduate speech language pathology students, and they reflect on some of the questions the students asked and how they answered. This episode of Stuttering Since ’02 has Jared and his mom (who has known him “forever”) sitting down for a chat about stuttering. Jared asks his mom when she first noticed he stuttered and what she did to help him with his speech through preschool, elementary school, middle school and high school. He knows a lot of the story but hears for the first time about some of the steps his mom took to learn about stuttering and how she could best support him. His mom shares what she thinks was a high point in Jared’s journey, as well as her perspective on what was a particularly low point. Jared invites two friends to join him in talking about what it’s like to be friends with someone who stutters. Jared has known Wes since elementary school and Ben since pre-school. Each friend shares his first memory of Jared stuttering and how they reacted to it. They talk candidly about how they feel about Jared’s stutter, how it affects their interactions at school and other places, and what advice they have for other kids who meet people who stutter.
