BiStitchual is a queer, Canadian crafting podcast brought to you by John and Kelsi. We started this podcast to talk more about queerness, mental health, and disability, both in the fibre arts community and the world at large. We hope to build a community that will not only embrace, but celebrate, uplift, and connect with folks who recognize and relate to these identities and intersections. Tune in twice a month as we discuss our knitting and crochet projects and stories, talk about being disaster queers, and figure out which pop culture characters we are based on our horoscopes.
This week Kelsi has some very awesome and alliterative updates on her comfy cottagecore crochet cat cardigan, sweater softening saga, and super sweet short row socks! And John… has a moustache.
Guess who’s back… back again… Bistitchual’s back! That’s right, we are still alive and kicking (… kicking ourselves for not recording for a whole two months - please forgive us)! We dive right back into our fibre content, and discuss ambitious crochet colourwork choices, how to soften your itchy knits, and our very special new friend, Clobber!
We're back! This time ‘round we’re talking life updates, WIPs, and multiple FOs! John's been busy working on knitting projects during class and has formed some opinions. Kelsi doesn't agree. Also, possibly the best horoscope ever?
Kelsi isn’t able to join us this episode, and we all know John can't manage ten seconds alone, so we’ve called in reinforcements! John has a chat with fellow double cancer Harper Bee, about imposter syndrome, the merits of BFL, and whether or not yarn can accurately be described as “crunchy.”
We have a very special guest today and we are not cool about it. Alyson Chu, the crocheter on the Keep Calm and Carry Yarn podcast, joins us to talk about her newest venture, Moorit Magazine, and all of the incredible community support she’s received for it. We also try to figure out if Danny DeVito is sexy?
Goldfish and raisins are the best snack and John will fight about it. Much has happened in the last fortnight, including new meds, new school, and a… misunderstanding about German short rows. Kelsi discovers that we owe a whole lot to German knitters of yore!
New year, new yarn! John and Kelsi do a brief overview of the highs and lows of 2020, and look to bigger, brighter things in 2021. We discuss the purpose of a tubular cast on - why should any cast on take six rows?? - and puzzle out John’s solution to uneven tension while knitting ribbing.
It’s Christmas in two days and we are feeling… something. We’ve got some big holiday feels, and a proposal for those of you who do too - New Year’s Eve zoom party? Let’s dress up fancy, eat cheeseballs (B.Y.O.C.B.), and show off our cats! In other news, John has finally finished a sweater, and Kelsi might have invented crochet? All this, plus the inaugural Bistitchual Podcast Mailbag segment!
For some reason it feels like it’s been ages since we’ve recorded? But that just means we have so much to talk about! We announce the winners of the Elfmail KAL grand prize (which Kelsi finally started the day before it wrapped up)! We get introspective and talk about how this podcast has changed the way we relate to each other, which albums have shaped our lives, and the proper way to eat a pizza pocket. We also propose a new mailbag segment - we want to hear from you! Send us an email or a voice clip and chime in, and we’ll put it in the next episode!
This week we are so excited to chat with our business partners and friends, two very special guests, the co-founders of the Flamingo Market, Toronto’s preeminent LGBTQIA+ artisan and makers market! Jack and Sica are here to talk about all their different ventures, supporting the community, and what it’s like to wear approximately six different hats at the same time. Learn more about the market, BindersOUT, and all the amazing things they do for our community!Note: audio quality is a little rough in this episode, sorry! John’s back this week, with a number of WIPs in tow. For someone who’s never finished a sweater, they sure do keep starting them! Kelsi has found a new favourite cast-on technique, and is completely baffled by the ingenuity of some designers. We talk about what an exciting time it is to be involved in fibre arts, and of course we’ve got more big life updates, because that’s 2020 babey!
This week Kelsi had the pleasure of speaking with a very special guest, Debbie of the Loving Path Yarn! They discuss the process of coming up with colourways and the importance of a good name, living and working in a small, shared space, and Debbie has some surprising news about the Sweater Curse!
It’s Mean Girls Day! We celebrate by getting dragged by our horoscopes once again. We also talk about our adventures in dyeing (hint: it’s fun!), and finally get to talk about some super exciting news we’ve been dying to share with you!
It’s Bisexual Awareness Week! In this episode, we forget that we’re a fibre arts podcast and instead discuss our lives as disaster bis, and the ways that gender norms and stereotypes have informed our experiences. We talk about Shrek royalty, Instagram bullying, TikTok thirst trains, and how Elle Woods is an autistic icon.
This week Kelsi has exciting updates about her accidental Tinder date, and John has started performing acts of guerrilla kindness by leaving amigurumis in little free libraries! We talk about our queer awakenings, the EmpowerPeople2020 project, and touch on a recent Instagram discussion around some words used by the fibre community. Plus, hats for snakes! This week John has listened to so much Michelle Branch that they’ve forgotten an exciting milestone, and Kelsi has some fun knitting science to share! We talk gauge, executive dysfunction, and our very first Virtual Stitch Night! Missed it? Don’t worry, there’s another one coming up soon!
This week Kelsi has some grievances to air about her star sign and John managed not to make what would have been an extremely ill-timed joke. We talk craftivism, guerrilla kindness, and crafting as functional art, and how we’re working towards fostering conversation and community on our brand new BiStitchual Discord server!
We’ve got lots of exciting stuff happening this week! We are joined by Yu Ra, the creator of the Quiet Queers Craftalong, to chat about the craftalong and its inception, how it works this year, and fun ways to use up scrap yarn (hint: there’s another craftalong!) We also announce the winners of our Instagram giveaway!
We’re back (a day late, oops, sorry!) with our third episode! This time we talk major life updates, the Quiet Queer Craftalong, and summer projects - what do you make when it’s too dang hot for wool? Who even wants to think about making sweaters at a time like this? We’ve found some more bi stereotypes, and discuss what it’s like dating as bi, non-monogamous folks. Plus we tease the prizes for our upcoming giveaway!
We’re back with a second episode! This time we are joined by our first ever guest, Morgan Gerrard, the Virgo behind Amaranth Fibres, an Ontario-based indie dyer! We discuss spinning, dyeing, pride yarns and more, including the series of poor decisions that led to an abundance of long furbies in Kelsi's life! It’s our first episode! Join us as we begin our podcast journey, discussing who we are and how this podcast came to be, what we hope to achieve with it, and so much more!Theme music is Ukulele by Adam Vitovský, digital work is licensed under CC BY 3.0.
