In November 1986, 24-year-old June Carpenter Gilkerson left her Midland home to meet a probationer she supervised at the Midland County Restitution Center. She never returned.Her blue Honda Civic was found abandoned at a Best Western near Interstate 20, purse and belongings still inside. Evidence quickly pointed to probationer David Russell Alderink and Midland library custodian Kenneth Wayne Parker, who had discussed abducting women for profit.Alderink later admitted helping set up June's abduction, claiming Parker carried out the attack. Investigators uncovered physical evidence, contradictory alibis, and recorded conversations between the men. Though June's body was never recovered, Parker was convicted in federal court of conspiracy to kidnap and sentenced to two consecutive life terms. A deleted file recovered from Rex Heuermann's basement allegedly contains the Long Island Serial Killer's step-by-step methodology. According to prosecutors, eighty-seven details match how the Gilgo Beach victims were killed.The document—titled HK2002-04—was found on one of fifty-eight hard drives seized from the Massapequa Park home. Created in 2000 and modified through 2002, it allegedly contained sections for supplies, body preparation, and "lessons learned."According to court documents: A "Supplies" section allegedly listed cutting tools, acid, tarps, and cat litter. A "Body Prep" section allegedly stated: "remove head and hands, remove ID marks like tattoos." A "Things to Remember" section allegedly contained: "Hit harder... light rope broke under stress." The document allegedly referenced specific pages in FBI profiler John Douglas's Mindhunter.Jessica Taylor's remains were found along Ocean Parkway with her head removed and tattoos mutilated. DA Ray Tierney stated: "The exact method by which these murders were committed in excruciating detail in that document is in some cases identical to the methodology used to murder the victims."Twenty-seven years under the same roof produced two completely opposite conclusions. Rex Heuermann's wife Asa Ellerup still calls him her "hero" and described jail visits as feeling like "a first date." Their daughter Victoria says he's "most likely the Gilgo Beach serial killer" after speaking with BTK's daughter about having an alleged killer for a father.According to prosecutors, female hairs found on multiple victims were allegedly consistent with DNA from both women. Neither is accused of involvement—the transfer allegedly came from Rex's clothing or their home.The daughter saw what the wife cannot. The man who took Nancy Guthrie has been called sloppy, amateurish, incompetent by every talking head on cable news. Former FBI Special Agent Robin Dreeke disagrees. After 21 years with the Bureau—including leading the Counterintelligence Behavioral Analysis Program—his assessment is clear: what we're seeing on that doorbell footage isn't unusual. It's baseline.The Walmart backpack. The awkward holster placement. The improvised camera cover fashioned from potted plant foliage. Dreeke explains this is what actual criminal operations look like. The movies trained us to expect meticulous planning and elegant execution. Real offenders show up with cheap equipment and figure it out as they go. The cases that get solved typically involve exactly this preparation level. We just don't broadcast those nationally.The uncomfortable question: this suspect's operation was messy and it's still working. Four weeks—no identification, no arrest, no vehicle. Sloppy-but-successful tells us something different than sloppy-and-caught. Dreeke examines whether this is someone who lacks capacity or someone driven by desperation or compulsion. This is our Week in Review of the Kouri Richins murder trial—and one fact may matter more than everything else the jury has heard.Four years after Eric Richins died with fentanyl in his system, the state's own former Chief Medical Examiner still lists his manner of death as "undetermined." Not homicide. The prosecution is asking a jury to convict Kouri Richins of murder when their own medical expert won't call it one.The problems don't stop there. Carmen Lauber, the housekeeper who testified she bought fentanyl for Kouri four times, was using methamphetamine during the relevant period. She received immunity from three jurisdictions before taking the stand. Her supplier Robert Crozier originally told detectives he sold fentanyl—then testified under oath that he only sold oxycodone because "everybody was scared of fentanyl." When your two key witnesses can't agree on what the drugs were, the case has a credibility crisis.Former FBI behavioral analyst Robin Dreeke assesses what's actually happening in that courtroom.
