Rowan says she's a queer woman in love with a transman and that doesn't fit labels. What does one do about that? She talks about putting love before labels and how we need to, as a greater LGBTQIA+ community, stop making each other feel like we're not enough! Not gay enough, not lesbian enough, not whatever enough. She mentions Bisexual Awareness Week and how labels both help us and hurt us. This episode is marked as explicit because there's one F-bomb. This week marks Bisexual Awareness Week – a week to celebrate the bi-plus community and help bring light to the issues that bi-plus individuals face. The bi-plus community – which includes bisexual, pansexual, and omnisexual folks, among others – is the largest population within the LGBTQ community. But among other issues, bi-plus folks disproportionately struggle with physical and mental health issues. According to the Bisexual Resource Center, bi-plus people face even higher rates of depression and anxiety than lesbians and gay men. And for the first time, the Biden Administration hosted a Bisexual Health Equity Roundtable. Yesterday, 15 bi-plus healthcare policy experts and advocates met with federal agency officials at the Department of Health and Human Services to discuss the health disparities facing the bisexual community, and made policy recommendations to address these issues. We spoke with one of those advocates, Kierra Johnson, the Executive Director of the National LGBTQ Task Force.

It's Bisexual Awareness Week, and I want to celebrate my people! In the fifth episode of Help Existing, I spoke with author Jen Winston about understanding bisexuality better. That's a great primer on a lot of the myriad serious (and sometimes fun) issues bi people face. This week, I wanted to talk with a bisexual man about what his experience has been like. For men, it is often more stigmatized to be bi. While bi women are often infuriatingly assumed to "really" be straight, bi men are assumed to "really" be gay. This conversation about why that is should help you examine your own internalized biphobia (even if you yourself are bi!). Aaron Aceves is the author of the new bisexual YA novel This Is Why They Hate Us. He's a Mexican-American-born writer who graduated from Harvard, received his MFA from Columbia, and is a teacher at UT Austin. He spoke with me about his new book, and also about his own experiences as a bisexual Chicano man. I hope you enjoy this conversation and support any bisexuals in your life. Including if that bisexual is yourself! Help Existing is listener (and host) supported! Any contributions you can my to my Venmo @rachel-krantz help me keep going and are very appreciated. Thanks!

The Leftscape honors Bisexual Awareness Week and Bi Visibility Month with a conversation with social activist, writer, artist, and secular minister Cedric Maurice. Inspired by the work of queer theologian and black bisexual scholar Dr. Elias Farajaje-Jones and the collective work of bi activists such as bi pride flag creator Michael Page in the 1990s, Cedric Maurice has been a longtime outspoken member of the bi community. In this interview, he speaks to his experiences with seeking and creating space for bi people of color, the challenges of dismantling stigma, the potential for social isolation of those who identify as both black and bisexual, and sharing love and desire beyond gender. Listen in to hear about his preliminary plans for an exciting road trip video project, his deep resonance with the "bi" label, and some powerful wisdom for all. At the top of the show, co-hosts Wendy Sheridan, Robin Renée, and Mary McGinley celebrate or otherwise note "holidays" including Active Aging Week, Chimney Safety Week, Women's Health and Fitness Day, the anniversary of the Nixon-Kennedy debate in 1960, and National Dumpling Day. Wendy renames one event "National Paranoia Day" and later coins the homonym, "allegator." Birthday shouts go out to Serena Williams, Winnie Mandela, Linda Hamilton, and others. On a more serious note, the controversy over Brett Kavanaugh's Supreme Court nomination and Dr. Christine Blasey Ford's account of his alleged assault are at the forefront of the news. Wendy reads an excerpt from Abagail Adams' letter to her husband John that still speaks loud and clear for the voices and respect of women. Everyone shares their preliminary thoughts on Fear by Bob Woodward and The Obama Inheritance: Fifteen Stories of Conspiracy Noir is offered up as a palate cleanser for all the real-life crazy. Host, Eric Lesh, talks with Nancy Marcus, co-founder of BiLaw and writer for LegallyBi. Sept 19-26 is Bisexual Awareness Week, and Septender 23rd is Bi Visibility Day. On this episode we talk about the nearly five million adults in the U.S. who identify as bisexual. In case you were wondering, bi people actually comprise more than half of the entire LGBT community, yet bi people are often erased from the LGBT movement, our political discourse and even litigation. So today we are going to talk with THE expext in this area, Nancy Marcus. Nancy is an out bi lawyer and LGBT rights activist. She is a co-founder of BiLaw, the national organization for bi lawyers, law professors, law students, and their allies, and is the author of "Bridging Bisexual Erasure in LGBT-Rights Discourse and Litigation." Nancy is a former colleague of mine at Lambda Legal, and she is also a dear friend. After our Podcast conversation, Nancy was so inspired by my nudging her that she should be doing even MORE to help bi-inclusion in LGBT-rights advocacy along (because that's what friends do, nudge each other), she asked me to spread the word to any lawyers out there who want help framing strategically effective bi-inclusive arguments (and, possibly, helping with amicus briefing) that she would love to hear from you at LegallyBiNancy@gmail.com.

We welcome stand-up comedian Jes Tom and dyke out about gender identity! Do gender roles exist in queer relationships? How do people react to different identities and what privileges come with them? But first, with so much to cover in current events, we spend a little too much time dyking out about Billie Jean King and Battle of the Sexes, the super gay Emmys, and how much republicans still hate gay people. Also, Carolyn finds a way to work Whitney Houston into the conversation, again. (hint: it has to do with Bisexual Awareness Week!)Follow us on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Leave Us a Review!

This year, he was invited back to the White House for the Bisexual Community Policy Briefing on September 21, 2015, a meeting that coincided with Bisexual Awareness Week. He's currently working on the self-help book Healing Stigma: A Survivor's Guide to Repairing Identity in the Internet Age. Nick Hadikwa Mwaluko, a writer and activist, speaks about an article he wrote regarding the anti-gay movement in Uganda. He shares the cultural and political atmosphere around LGBTQ issues in Uganda, background about the passing of Uganda's Anti-Homosexuality Act, and the lack of exposure, education, and distractions of major issues.
It's Idea Festival time in Louisville, and that means cool people who do cool things descend on our city to talk about the things they're doing! We chatted with one of those folks, Juan Williams Chàvez, this week about his work, and what it means to do social activist through art. One of Chàvez's big projects, the Pruitt-Igoe Bee Sanctuary, takes place on land that was once home to one of the country's most notoriously awful housing developments. Built in the mid-1950s, the 33-building, high-rise complex fell into almost immediate disrepair, and was described in a Missouri History book as "something out of a Charles Dickens novel." It was eventually demolished in the mid 1970s. Today, thanks to Chàvez, it is home to a bee sanctuary, where members of the community learn about urban agriculture. The decision on how to use the land wasn't incidental. "Bees function as a community," Chàvez explains. "Pruitt-Igoe was designed for community. I wanted it to kind of go back to community." In our Juicy Fruit segment this week, we talk about the "angry black woman" stereotype that reared its head in a New York Times feature this week, pointed at television producer Shonda Rhimes. The backlash was righteous and overwhelming, and the Times ended up issuing an apology. We break down the stereotype and how it does and doesn't play out in pop culture. "And speaking of things that are hard for a lot of folks to understand," Jaison says, "it's Bisexual Awareness Week." We go dispell some of the most common misconceptions about our bi brothers and sisters.
