But Where Are You Really From?

Welcome to episode 7 of BWAYRF! This one is a pretty relaxed Q&A with questions submitted by our friends and listeners. We'll be going on a hiatus after this episode since we're graduating, moving apartments and pursuing some summer plans, but we'll be back in July with more episodes! Welcome to part 2 of our miniseries on faith! This week, we had a phone conversation with Sadiyah Ahmad, one of Connie's friends and a Muslim American, to discuss what interfaith solidarity looks like. We covered a lot of ground talking about the importance of recognizing our similarities and the allyship that surrounds us, as well as the need to reach out to people and strike up conversations.

A food-related idiom for our food-related episode. This episode tackles a long contested topic — cultural appropriation. And this time, it's in food. With the opening of Lucky Lee's, a healthy Chinese restaurant right next to NYU operated by a white woman, as well as Gordon Ramsay's "authentic Asian eating house," the Asian community has to contend with these situations and what it is about cultural appropriation that feels so hurtful. This episode of BWAYRF is about Christianity from our perspectives as Asian Americans. We discuss how the cross between Christian culture and Asian culture is pretty distinct -- there is a surprising amount of mutual experiences between us. We also grapple with how Christianity, at its worst, has been a white colonizer religion. What does it mean to be Asian and practicing a religion that has participated in oppression? In this episode of BWAYRF, we had the pleasure of interviewing Sarian Sankoh, a friend from school. Sarian is a black woman, and she'd often receive comments on the way she talked -- microaggressions like "You articulate yourself so well" and even "You sound like a Becky." Tune in on the second part of our discussion on microaggressions to listen to a different perspective.

In this episode, we discuss microaggressions. It's something that we both think about a lot, especially since we're often met with the passing "nihao" or "konichiwa" in public. Even our podcast is named after a common one that we encounter, and one that we're sure many other Asian Americans face.
