He is famous for his acutely lyrical and emotional poetry, as well as his turbulent personal life. The originality of his work makes categorization difficult. His works include the poems "Do not go gentle into that good night" and "And death shall have no dominion", as well as the "play for voices" Under Milk Wood. He also wrote stories and radio broadcasts such as the piece we share today, A Child's Christmas in Wales, as well as Portrait of the Artist as a Young Dog. Charles Dickens (1812 – 1870) was an English novelist, journalist, short story writer and social critic. He created some of literature's best-known fictional characters, and is regarded by many as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era. His notable works include the piece we excerpt today, "A Christmas Carol," as well as "Oliver Twist," and "Great Expectations," all still quite popular today. She loved the characters, the scenery, the costumes, and most importantly, the beautiful stories that came to life before her eyes. As a teenager, Tracy joined her high school drama department and got her own taste of small stage stardom—as well as her first glimpse into the challenges that schools and community theaters face, such as limited budgets, little to no stage or storage space, and the lack of scripts for large cast sizes. Upon entering adulthood, Tracy settled into life as a wife and mother, but the theater came calling again when her husband accepted a job as a junior high drama teacher. Once again, those challenges presented themselves—little to no budget, a small stage with only a few working lights, and difficulty finding scripts with enough roles for his ever-increasing class numbers. That is when playwriting entered Tracy's life. With the start of school quickly approaching, Tracy decided to pen her first one-act play, an adaptation of O. Henry's “The Gift of the Magi”. The play was well received by the students, and Tracy decided to seek publication for the script as well as continuing to write more one-act plays and eventually full-length plays as well. Tracy now has more than two hundred published plays and skits with a number of publishers and her plays have been produced all across the country as well as internationally. When she writes a play, Tracy continues to keep in mind those challenges she recognized all those years ago on the high school stage—limited budget, small stages, and the desire to let each character shine. Tracy continues to write plays for the youth and Christian market and resides with her husband and two children in Metro Detroit. The Scene TeamJustin Borak - Host Zach Dulli - Executive Producer KJ Lampar - Producer Leah Barker - Producer & Talent CoordinatorJim Colleran - EditorAdditional music and sound effects licensed through Envato ElementsLinksBe sure to follow The Scene Podcast on Instagram and YouTubeSubscribe to The Scene NewsletterSpecial ThanksJennifer IsaacsonLauren KardosJeffery KeilholtzShow ContributorsLeah BarkerJustin BorakJim ColleranZach DulliKJ LamparTracy Wells The Scene TeamJustin Borak - Host Zach Dulli - Executive Producer KJ Lampar - Producer Leah Barker - Producer & Talent CoordinatorJim Colleran - Editor Additional music and sound effects licensed through Envato Elements LINKSBe sure to follow The Scene Podcast on Instagram and YouTubeSubscribe to The Scene Newsletter

When our expectations of Jesus amount to making himin our own image—demanding he perform according to our standards and meet our desires—then the divine becomes nothing more than our puppet, and we the puppeteers. That is not “the one who is to come.” That is not the Jesus we are waiting for. Because that is not who God is.Emmanuel, God-with-us, is the one who walks with usin our sorrows and hardships. He strengthens us to meet the days ahead, especially when we are full of questions and doubts and cannot know the future. Even more, he empowers us to walk with others—to help them see, to help them hear good news.God knows that we will suffer times of doubt anddiscouragement and it is ok to question God—God is big enough to handle it. But God is not here to meet our expectations. We are here to meet his.
You can't escape whatever suffering you have. Those around you cannot alleviate it. Sometimes, the way out is going through. Pastor Garrett teaches a new way to manage expectations.

Rugby writer and journalist Brendan Fanning has published his new book 'Touching Distance: Irish Rugby's Battle with Great Expectations', which is now available to purchase. It traces Ireland rugby's journey from the beginning of professionalism to becoming world number one, how they still haven't got past a World Cup quarter-final, and the pressure to deliver at the next tournament in 2027. Brendan Fanning has been chatting to Galway Bay FM's William Davies.
Videomate: Men was a VHS tape released in 1987 featuring 60 single men pitching themselves as dates to women on the other side of the TV screen: “The love of your life could be on your TV tonight!” the box reads. In retrospect, Videomate: Men is a bizarre and hilarious time capsule, but at the time it was one of many manifestations of what was known as video dating. To find out how anyone thought this was a good idea, Decoder Ring examines the weird and forgotten world of video dating in the 1970s, '80s, and '90s to find out why video dating once seemed like the future—and if that future is still yet to come. On this episode, originally released in 2019, we talk to the creators of the Found Footage Fest, VHS collectors who unleashed Videomate on the internet; ask the creators of video dating services like Videomate's Steve Dworman and Great Expectations' Jeffrey Ullman what they were thinking; and talk to participants who used these services but not necessarily in the way that was intended. We'll also discuss the future of video dating with Coffee Meets Bagel co-founder Dawoon Kang and former host of The Longest Shortest Time Andrea Silenzi. This episode was written by Willa Paskin and was produced and edited by Benjamin Frisch. We had research assistance from Cleo Levin. Decoder Ring is produced by Katie Shepherd, Max Freedman, and Evan Chung, our supervising producer. Merritt Jacob is Senior Technical Director. “THE HOLMES ACTING DYNASTY: FROM STAGE TO SCREEN” - 11/24/25 (115) When we think of the great acting family dynasties of Hollywood, we often think of the Barrymores, the Carradines, or the Fondas, but today we'll be discussing another acting dynasty that may not be as familiar, but is every bit as interesting. The HOLMES family consisted of prolific character actor TAYLOR HOLMES, whose career spanned from Broadway to film to TV, his actress wife, EDNA PHILLIPS, and their talented children, PHILLIPS HOLMES, a leading man of the early 1930s, MADELEINE TAYLOR HOLMES, a gifted character performer in her own right, and actor RALPH HOLMES, whose early promise was tragically cut short. Joining us is special guest actress/musician MICHELLE HOLMES, who is a cousin of Taylor Holmes. Together, we'll explore how the Holmes family helped shape the Golden Age of Hollywood — and how their influence still lingers today. A neglected Georgian house, shutters still, poplars trees surround it, whispering. Downstairs is a row of servant bells to call servants. One has a mysterious name and is reputed to ring when no one is there. Rumour speaks of a hooded figure and an owl; the corridors mutter with sounds of pipes, disconnected wires, and something harder to dismiss. By night, faces seem to change in the mirror; but by day, the rooms are ordinary. Servants won't stay there and then the owner organises an investigation, a ghost hunt, if you like. A society of guest who are to keep their counsel until Twelfth Night, listening for what remains and for the presence that speaks when the house is empty. First published as the Christmas number of All the Year Round (December 1859), a collaborative sequence framed and partly written by Charles Dickens. This reading includes Dickens's chapters: “The Mortals in the House” and “The Ghost in Master B.'s Room.” Charles Dickens (1812–1870) was a British novelist and social critic, author of Oliver Twist, Bleak House, and Great Expectations. He edited Household Words and All the Year Round, helping to make the Victorian Christmas ghost story a tradition. If you've ever read any Charles Dickens novels, especially Great Expectations, then you'll have run into Newgate Prison. The hulking, notorious jail loomed large in London's history, before its demolition in 1902. While accurate execution statistics are difficult to find, there's a suggestion that over 1000 people faced capital punishment at the prison between 1790 and 1902. The old execution bell rests in a glass case in nearby St Sepulchre-without-Newgate, rung the night before an execution as a reminder to the condemned. So how did this prison gain such a fearsome reputation? How has it survived well beyond its early 20th-century demolition? Let's find out in this week's episode! EPISODE 137: Embracing a broad range of musical styles, British singer-songwriter Tasmin Archer's soulfully silky voice has graced a strong catalogue of songs with an eclectic mix of themes since the 1990s. Archer first came to public attention in 1992 with the UK chart topper and worldwide hit 'Sleeping Satellite' taken from the platinum debut album 'Great Expectations'. Three further singles from the album were top 30 hits in the UK. She received a Brit award in 1993 and was nominated in two further categories the same year. Archer also won an RSH Gold award in Germany and was nominated in the best alternative artist category for an MTV award in the US. 'Shipbuilding', an EP of four Elvis Costello covers, was released in early 1994 and was followed in 1996 by the more introspective, critically acclaimed album 'Bloom'. 'On', the third Tasmin Archer studio album was released independently on Quiverdisc in 2006. A new album 'A Cauldron of Random Notes' is scheduled for release in September 2025. tasminarcher.comContact us: makingsoundpodcast.comFollow on Instagram: @makingsoundpodcastFollow on Threads: @jannkloseJoin our Facebook GroupPlease support the show with a donation, thank you for listening!
Ecclesiastes teaches us that joy is God's gift, even in the midst of life's contradictions.“Estella, to the last hour of my life, you cannot choose but remain part of my character, part of the little good in me, part of the evil. But, in this separation I associate you only with the good, and I will faithfully hold you to that always, for you must have done me far more good than harm, let me feel now what sharp distress I may. O God bless you, God forgive you!”Charles Dickens, Great Expectations

Send us a textWhen people talk about the most successful writers of all time, one name is almost always among the first: J. K. Rowling. The author of the Harry Potter series didn't just sell books — she created a cultural earthquake. For millions of readers, Hogwarts was not a fictional castle, but a place they knew as well as their own schools. Her novels inspired midnight release parties at bookstores, fan conventions that filled stadiums, and a cinematic franchise that grossed billions. Children who had never finished a book before suddenly tore through six- and seven-hundred-page volumes. Adults, too, found themselves sneaking the books into briefcases or pretending they were buying them for their kids. “But Rowling's brilliance didn't appear out of nowhere. She was inspired by the masters who came before her, most notably Charles Dickens. In Dickens, she found a model for eccentric characters, worlds that felt alive, and the courage to confront cruelty — especially towards children. Much like Pip, Oliver, or the young heroes of Dickens' novels, Harry and his friends navigate a world that can be frightening, unfair, and full of moral complexity.”Rowling herself has acknowledged Dickens as a major influence, and it's easy to see why. Dickens' novels often center on children navigating worlds that are harsh, unfair, and sometimes cruel — think of the orphaned Pip in Great Expectations or Oliver Twist in Oliver Twist. Similarly, Rowling's young protagonists face dangerous and sometimes frightening circumstances: orphaned Harry navigating a neglectful household, children confronting magical and moral threats, and characters whose lives are shaped by the indifference or cruelty of adults.Rowling also mirrors Dickens in her love for eccentric and vividly drawn characters. From the strangely named and larger-than-life figures in Dickens' novels to the magical teachers, ghostly ancestors, and quirky classmates at Hogwarts, Rowling populates her books with personalities so distinct they feel almost tangible. Each character, no matter how minor, contributes to the richness of the world, giving readers a sense that they are peeking into a fully realized society.Cover art:Image of J.K. “In fairness, I guess if they didn't have the make-up, what would they have? A different career?” Released March 15, 1976, DESTROYER, the “iconic and mysterious” 4th studio album by KISS, was the first studio release after their breakthrough double live album ALIVE!, which chronicled their first 3 studio albums in a live concert setting and really brought the power and spectacle of the live KISS concert experience of the mid 1970's to the masses. Getting winded from tying your shoelaces is “the saddest thing about getting older” after coming to grips with the glaring realization that KISS just isn't quite as awesome at middle age as it was upon hearing it for the first time in early childhood. But having said that, KISS was most definitely one hell of an exciting place to start one's journey into the realm of metal. We're going to ask that you go ahead and lower any “Great Expectations” you may have had for this episode, because only a “fly by the seat of our balls kinda podcast” such as ours would dare to take on something like this. Get ready for a “sobering moment”, remember that “Iconic” is the word of the episode, find out which Slayer album included “Fluoride Westone”, discover “how many people it takes to make KISS sound good”, and remember that “it's nothing but 7's” when you JOIN US for some “Rock and Roll Spiderman” as we embark on our trip through CHRONICLES II with PART I: the 4th studio album by “the hottest band in the land”, DESTROYER. Don and Tom break down the overhyped expectations around recent market returns, referencing Jason Zweig's analysis of 230 years of stock market data. They emphasize that spending and saving habits matter more than chasing 15% returns, and explain why realistic planning using a 3–6% real return assumption over 30-year rolling periods is more prudent. They also tackle questions about RMD strategies from Vanguard IRAs and the TSP's F and G bond funds. Donna Leon's memoir, "Wandering through Life," gave her fans a colorful tour through her life, from childhood in New Jersey to adventures in China and Iran, to her love of Venice and opera. Nowhere, however, did she discuss her writing life. Now in her new collection of essays "BACKSTAGE: Stories of a Writing Life," Donna reveals her admiration for, and inspiration from, the great crime novelists Ruth Rendell and Ross Macdonald, examining their approach to storytelling as she dissects her favorite books of theirs. She expresses her love for Charles Dickens's Great Expectations and her appreciation for Sir Walter Scott's generosity of spirit. And she chronicles the amount of research she undertakes to be able to present her characters and work authentically.
