The ClimbSci - Better Climbing Through Science podcast is an incredible resource for climbers and athletes interested in nutrition and performance. I cannot believe that I am just discovering this now, as it has quickly become one of my favorite podcasts to listen to. The format of the show is fantastic, with Tom and Brian providing a mix of science background information and practical takeaways. As a vegetarian alpinist, I have found that I need to read between the lines on some topics, as the show primarily caters to pure technical climbers who may not prioritize cardiovascular fitness. However, overall, this podcast has changed my life and I will continue to come back to it over and over again. I am grateful to Tom and Brian for sharing their knowledge.
One of the best aspects of this podcast is the level-setting approach taken by Tom and Brian. They recognize that not everyone has an athletic background or is well-informed about nutrition, so they provide basic explanations at the start of each topic. This makes it accessible for listeners who may be misinformed or uninformed, like myself when it comes to sports nutrition. Additionally, the amount of research studies cited throughout the episodes adds credibility and persuasiveness to their recommendations. It is much more convincing when all the mechanisms at work are explained than simply relying on Instagram posts or anecdotal evidence.
One potential downside of the podcast is its lengthiness. The episodes tend to be around two hours long, which can feel overwhelming for some listeners. While I personally enjoy getting into the depth of each topic, I understand that others may prefer shorter episodes for easier consumption. Another minor drawback is that they stopped recording episodes at some point, which leaves me wanting more content from them.
In conclusion, The ClimbSci - Better Climbing Through Science podcast is a fantastic resource for climbers or anyone interested in nutrition and performance optimization. It provides valuable information that goes deep into scientific research while also offering practical, useful ways to apply the knowledge. I look forward to each episode and appreciate the effort Tom and Brian put into delivering thorough information in an engaging manner. While there are some minor improvements that could be made, overall, this podcast is a must-listen for those seeking evidence-based nutrition advice and guidance.
You are not mistaken, this is a new episode of ClimbSci which we recorded on the April 04, 2025. The previous episode was recorded on July 04, 2022. Anyway, Brian and I had a catchup, and waffle on as is tradition.useful. / usefulcoachTom Herbert is a leading international climbing nutrition strategist, facilitator, and mindsetter.Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. Our last podcast was February 2020, and so we decided to get together and host a live recording in July 2022. No doubt due to short notice and the timezones, we didn't have a huge turnout (or tunein), but thanks to the handful of people who did, and especially Jared who joined us on the call to ask his question. If you like this format, let us know and we can try and schedule another (within 2 years).Support the show
