The Biggest Mistake in EDS Care and How to Fix It with Dr. Ina Stephens & Dr. Dacre Knight (Ep 182)

What would it look like if people with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome finally had a true medical home? In this episode of Bendy Bodies, Dr. Linda Bluestein is joined by Dr. Ina Stephens and Dr. Dacre Knight to share the story behind the newly launched University of Virginia Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome Center, how it came to be, why it was urgently needed, and what makes it fundamentally different from traditional models of care. The conversation explores the power of integrative, multidisciplinary care, the consequences of fragmented systems, and why early recognition, especially in pediatric patients, can profoundly change lifelong outcomes. Dr. Stephens and Dr. Knight discuss what patients can expect when seeking care at UVA, how research and clinical care are being built together, and why clinician education is essential to closing long-standing gaps in EDS care. The episode also features a major announcement: a new collaboration between Bendy Bodies and the UVA EDS Center, uniting global patient education with academic medicine to help reshape how connective tissue disorders are understood, taught, and treated worldwide. For anyone searching for what meaningful progress in EDS care could look like, this conversation offers a glimpse of what's possible. Takeaways: EDS care is most effective when it's coordinated, not scattered across disconnected specialties. Early diagnosis, particularly in children, can prevent years of physical and emotional harm. An “EDS home” model helps reduce gaslighting, burnout, and fragmented care. Academic medicine is beginning to catch up, creating space for evidence-informed, compassionate treatment. Education itself is a form of care, benefiting both patients and clinicians navigating complex conditions. Want to learn more about the UVA EDS Center? STOP Intermittent Fasting If You Want to Stay Young : 1409

STOP intermittent fasting if you think it automatically keeps you young. In this episode, you'll learn why short-term fasting results can mislead long-term aging outcomes, and how duration, frequency, refeeding, and protein intake determine whether fasting supports longevity or quietly accelerates decline. Watch this episode on YouTube for the full video experience: https://www.youtube.com/@DaveAspreyBPR Host Dave Asprey sits down with Valter Longo, one of the world's leading longevity researchers with over 30 years of experience studying aging, nutrition, and disease prevention. Dr. Longo is the Director of the Longevity Institute at the University of Southern California's Leonard Davis School of Gerontology and the Director of the Longevity and Cancer Program at IFOM, the Italian Foundation for Cancer Research Institute of Molecular Oncology in Milan. He is the author of the bestselling book The Longevity Diet and was named one of TIME Magazine's 50 most influential people in health care for his research on fasting-mimicking diets. Together, Dave Asprey and Dr. Longo explain why many people focus too heavily on short-term effects and extrapolate them incorrectly across a lifetime. They break down how intermittent fasting differs biologically from multi-day fasting, why five-day fasting cycles trigger deeper cellular changes, and how insulin, IGF-1, mTOR, and growth hormone shape aging, regeneration, and disease risk over time. The conversation covers protein and amino acid intake, muscle preservation, frailty risk, and the tradeoffs between strength, function, and longevity. They explore ketosis, fasting-mimicking diets, stem cell activation, mitochondrial function, neuroplasticity, and why equilibrium and cycling matter more than constant restriction. Dave and Valter also discuss supplements, nootropics, creatine, carnivore-style eating, metabolism, sleep optimization, and how AI may eventually personalize fasting and nutrition based on individual biology rather than population averages. You'll learn: • Why short-term fasting benefits do not predict long-term longevity • How fasting duration changes gene expression and cellular regeneration • The difference between intermittent fasting and multi-day fasting • How protein and amino acids influence mTOR, IGF-1, and aging • Why muscle, strength, and longevity must be balanced, not maximized • When ketosis overlaps with fasting and when it does not • Why supplements can disrupt biological equilibrium • How AI could support future personalization in fasting and nutrition Dave Asprey is a four time New York Times bestselling author, founder of Bulletproof Coffee, and the father of biohacking. With over 1,000 interviews and 1 million monthly listeners, The Human Upgrade is the top podcast for people who want to take control of their biology, extend their longevity, and optimize every system in the body and mind. Mast Cell Activation Syndrome is one of the most misunderstood, and underrecognized, conditions in modern medicine. In this episode, Dr. Linda Bluestein is joined by Dr. Lawrence Afrin, one of the world's leading experts on mast cell disease, to unpack why MCAS is so often missed, why tryptase alone is not enough to diagnose it, and how this condition may be driving chronic inflammation, neurologic symptoms, psychiatric symptoms, and even hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (hEDS) in some patients. They talk about why MCAS can look completely different from one person to the next, how mast cells influence nearly every system in the body, and why so many patients are told “nothing is wrong” despite being profoundly unwell. We also explore emerging treatments, including GLP-1 medications, and what the future of MCAS research may hold. If you or your patients live with complex, multisystem symptoms that don't fit neatly into one diagnosis, this conversation may change how you see everything. Takeaways: MCAS rarely looks like classic allergy, which is why it's so often overlooked. Normal tryptase does not rule out mast cell disease, despite what many clinicians believe. Chronic multisystem inflammation is the biggest red flag for MCAS. MCAS may help explain hypermobile EDS in some patients, not as a genetic collagen defect but as an immune-driven process. New therapies are discussed, offering real hope for improved quality of life. Find the episode transcript here. #196 - Stop Hair Loss: Hormones, Stress & What Actually Works Hair loss isn't just cosmetic — it's a biological signal. And if you've ever watched clumps of hair collect in the shower, you know exactly how unsettling hair shedding can be. In this deeply personal episode, Lisa breaks down hair loss causes, why it often shows up during already stressful seasons of life, and what actually helps reverse it — without panic, gimmicks, or jumping straight to pharmaceuticals. Drawing from both functional medicine research and lived experience, this episode connects the dots between stress hormones, DHT, thyroid health, inflammation, nutrition, and insulin resistance — and explains why hair loss is rarely about “just hair.” If you've been told it's genetic and there's nothing you can do… this conversation may change everything.  In this episode, you'll learn: Why up to 40% of women experience hair loss — and why it often hits during perimenopause, menopause, post-partum, or prolonged stress The difference between autoimmune hair loss, hormone-driven hair loss, and stress-induced shedding How cortisol, insulin resistance, thyroid dysfunction, and DHT quietly sabotage hair growth The most common everyday habits that worsen hair loss (even when you're doing “everything right”) Evidence-backed lifestyle shifts, foods, supplements, and scalp strategies that actually support regrowth What finally helped Lisa stop excessive shedding after a major life transition — and why consistency matters more than perfection This is a compassionate, science-backed roadmap for anyone who's tired of feeling scared, frustrated, or alone in their hair loss journey — and wants real answers that address the root cause.  Episode Timestamps 00:00 – Why hair loss often shows up during stress, grief, or hormonal change 04:45 – What's normal shedding vs. a red flag 09:15 – The two main categories of hair loss (and why it matters) 13:30 – Hormones, DHT, and why women lose hair differently than men 19:45 – Lifestyle habits quietly damaging hair growth 26:30 – Nutrition for hair regrowth: what actually helps 31:45 – Supplements that support hair (without pill overload) 37:30 – Scalp care, circulation, and what finally stopped the shedding Final takeaway: Hair loss is rarely random — and it's almost never “just aging.” It's information. When you listen to the signals your body is sending and address the root causes, regrowth is often possible. And just as importantly, you're not broken — you're responding to stress, change, and biology in a very human way. If you or someone you love is quietly panicking every time you wash your hair, this one's for you. Keywords: hair loss, female hair loss, hormonal hair loss, stress hair loss, hair thinning, hair regrowth, perimenopause hair loss, menopause hair loss, thyroid hair loss, functional medicine

Ever feel like your supplement cabinet is full but your energy is still empty? We take you behind the label to show exactly why some products change lives and others change nothing. With Emily from Orthomolecular, we unpack the real markers of quality—verified sourcing, GMP manufacturing, third-party testing, and forms your cells can actually use—so you stop guessing and start feeling a difference. We start with the fish oil you love to hate. If your softgels smell rancid, cause burps, or require a handful to hit a therapeutic dose, you're not imagining it. Source, processing, and form separate effective EPA/DHA from junk. Then we tackle magnesium: oxide and citrate may keep you regular, but chelated bisglycinate supports sleep, mood, heart rhythm, and muscle calm because it gets inside cells. We also talk about the digestion piece too many overlook—low stomach acid from stress or long-term PPIs can block absorption, turning even good formulas into expensive decorations. From there, we map the essentials most women need: vitamin D3 with K2 to protect bones and arteries, omega-3s to dial down inflammation, and an advanced multivitamin with activated B vitamins for energy, methylation, and hormone metabolism. On gut health, we share why a multi-strain, shelf-stable probiotic can be a smart daily “maintenance” choice, and how Saccharomyces boulardii acts like a cleanup crew for the GI tract, helping maintain barrier integrity and support immunity. If you're ready to simplify, we explain how to audit your cabinet, check forms and doses, toss expired or ineffective products, and consolidate into a lean, therapeutic stack that works. No hype—just practical steps, clear explanations, and products designed to meet label claims and clinical standards. If mental health were only about mindset, then food, sleep, and movement wouldn't matter. But anyone who's tried to “think their way out” of burnout knows that doesn't work. The body keeps score, whether we pay attention or not.Welcome to the Happy, Healthy, Strong Podcast — hosted by Adam Lane. This show breaks down what sustainable health actually looks like, through nutrition that supports the body, movement that feels intentional, and habits built to last without extremes.Episode HighlightsIn this episode, Adam Lane is joined by Stacey Caler for an honest, grounded conversation about what it really takes to support both mental and physical health. They explore why balance isn't about doing more, but doing the right things consistently. From protein intake and micronutrients to daily movement, sleep, and time outdoors, we connect the dots between physical inputs and mental clarity. We also address how goal-setting, accountability, and social media exposure can either support or undermine long-term well-being.Episode OutlineWhy mental health cannot be separated from physical health. The role of proper nutrition in mood, focus, and emotional regulation. How protein supports neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine, GABA, and glutamate. The importance of omega-3 fatty acids and micronutrient-dense foods. Why a protein-rich breakfast sets the tone for the entire day.Strength training and regular movement as non-negotiables for long-term health.Using data and tracking tools, including the Little Oak Strength app, to measure progress.Goal-setting without pressure and why consistency matters more than intensity. The impact of social media on mental health and the comparison trap. The gut–brain connection and how digestion influences mood.Daily routines that support mental health, including supplements and sleep habits. The underrated value of outdoor activity and short walks after mealsEpisode Chapters00:00 Intro00:26 New Year Banter & Big Goals02:30 Data-Driven Fitness & The “Committed Club”05:34 Holidays, Overindulging & Getting Back On Track12:31 Mental Health, Social Media & Post-Covid Withdrawal18:58 Neurotransmitters 101 & Why Protein Matters22:17 Practical Protein: Shakes, Meals & Sugar Cravings23:19 Building a Foundation: Food First, Then Supplements27:05 Morning Routine: Protein, B-Complex & Omega-3s30:54 Midday & Evening: Magnesium, Iron & Sleep Support36:35 Movement & Mood: One Workout, Different Person39:26 The 10-Minute Walk After Meals40:52 Sunlight, Fresh Air & Seasonal Mood45:56 Food, Supplements & Personal Responsibility49:13 Protein, Aging & Women's Challenges53:52 Find Your “Big Domino” (Sleep, Food, Exercise)57:20 Longevity, Function & Not “Dying While You're Living01:01:04 Listening, Trauma & Walking the Journey With Patients01:02:30 Menopause Teaser & Future EpisodeAction TakenPrioritize a protein-rich breakfast to support brain chemistry.Incorporate regular strength training and daily movement.Track goals and progress using simple, data-driven tools.Build consistent sleep routines to support recovery and mood.Spend time outdoors daily, even if it's just a short walk.Reduce unnecessary social media exposure when it negatively impacts mindsetConclusionMental and physical health are constantly influencing each other, whether that connection is acknowledged or not. What gets eaten, how the body moves, how well sleep is protected, and how often the nervous system gets a break all shape how someone feels day to day. Welcome back to our weekend Cabral HouseCall shows!   This is where we answer our community's wellness, weight loss, and anti-aging questions to help people get back on track!   Check out today's questions:    Savanna: Hi Dr Cabral. My daughter was diagnosed with PANDAS through blood work after i noticed âlot of behavioral regression. She has also been recently diagnosed with level one, high functioning autism. I feel like a detective trying to figure out whats causing these flares. Some months she has seemingly zero symptoms. Then something sets it off (of course the sickness is one culprit causing the PANDAS) but over laps into autistic behaviors. I guess Im trying to ask for help in this mystery of triggers. Also suggestions of where to start to boost her immune system to prevent the sickness in the first place. I feel so discouraged as a parent not knowing how to help my child and watching her suffer. Just as I think I find a good supplement, it stops working. Such as valerian. We were using it as one calming aid and it worked for months and now all the sudden doesnt seem to be doing anything. This has happened with supplements in the past. I did your heavy metal detox and parasite cleanse with her a few years ago. Thnx                                                                                         Yvonne: As a post-menopausal woman, according to my gynecologist, I am not eligible for bioidentical hormones.  Is it ok to take DHEA after a certain age due to ongoing menopause symptoms of facial aging, insomnia, vaginal dryness etc and, if so, what dosage?                                                                            Emily: Hi Dr Cabral, I am currently working through an autoimmune face rash. I am working with a local integrative functional doctor who is recommending low dose naltrexone, and many other items. What are your thoughts on LDN? Harmful, helpful? How long should one stay on it?     Laura: Hi, I'm interested in what ingredients are ok in supplements and food.. for example, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose in baking or in supplements, different gums, which additives are ok? Thank you     Sheena: HI Dr.C! Hope you and your team are well. I'm a 45 year old in perimenopause and would like to prevent osteoporosis. Could you give me some advice on what's the best way to do this? I take foundational level 3 plus added vitamin D, magnesium, zinc and vitamin b. complex. I'm not not taking any calcium supplements except from my multi. Is this a prob? Do I need a special protocol for perimenopause support and osteo? In this episode of Skin Anarchy, Dr. Ekta Yadav sits down with Dr. Tiffany Libby for a clear, science-forward conversation on supplements, cellular energy, and why NAD biology has become such a focal point in modern longevity discussions. As interest in “aging better” grows, this episode cuts through hype to explore what NAD optimization can—and cannot—realistically do for skin and whole-body health.Dr. Libby brings a rare perspective to the conversation. As a board-certified dermatologist and Director of Mohs Surgery at Brown University Health, her work spans both skin cancer care and cosmetic dermatology, treating patients across decades of life. That long view has shaped her understanding of longevity not as youth preservation, but as maintaining resilience, repair capacity, and function over time—especially in the face of inflammation, environmental stress, and chronic disease.Much of the discussion centers on why supplements, particularly NAD boosters, are having a cultural moment. Dr. Libby explains that this surge reflects a gap in the healthcare system itself—one that prioritizes treatment over prevention. While supplements can offer support, she emphasizes they are not shortcuts. Longevity still rests on fundamentals: sleep, nutrition, movement, stress regulation, and inflammation control. The episode offers a practical breakdown of NAD (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide), explaining its role in mitochondrial energy production, DNA repair, and cellular defense. As NAD levels decline with age, skin becomes less efficient at repairing damage, producing collagen, and maintaining barrier integrity. Crucially, Dr. Libby explains why NAD itself can't be absorbed directly—and why precursors like nicotinamide riboside (NR) matter instead.Throughout the conversation, skepticism and safety remain central themes. In an underregulated supplement space, quality, dosing, and clinical validation matter. From a dermatologic standpoint, supporting mitochondrial health may help skin function closer to its biological potential—but only when paired with evidence-based care and realistic expectations.Listen to the full episode of Skin Anarchy to hear Dr. Tiffany Libby unpack the science of NAD, cellular energy, and why longevity begins with supporting biology—not chasing promises.SHOP TRU NIAGENDon't forget to subscribe to Skin Anarchy on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or your preferred platform.Reach out to us through email with any questions.Sign up for our newsletter!Shop all our episodes and products mentioned through our ShopMy Shelf!Support the show

Young people who use pre-workout supplements face more than double the risk of sleeping five hours or less per night, a level of sleep loss that undermines mood, learning, and physical recovery High-dose stimulants in pre-workout products keep your nervous system in a stressed, alert state, making it harder for your brain and body to shift into deep, restorative sleep Short sleep doesn't just cause fatigue; it pushes your body to adapt to exhaustion rather than strength, slowing progress even when training effort stays high Teens and young adults are especially vulnerable because their brains, nervous systems, and hearts are still developing, making stimulant exposure more disruptive Better performance comes from protecting sleep, fueling workouts with food, and prioritizing recovery, not from relying on stimulants that interfere with nighttime repair
