Welcome along to the Drop the Label Podcast I am your host Sarah. Labels are all around us, we use them freely and often without thought. This podcast is an exploration of various labels, discussed with various guests from different perspectives. We
On todays episode I had a good old catch up with James Simison. From stoic, the strong silent type, a label that awarded him positive recognition at school, James found himself struggling in later life through behaviours adopted due to that one label. Burying feelings and emotions and putting on a brave face even when things were becoming simply too much. We also chatted about celebrity and that it should come with a mental health warning, and using labels to excuse certain behaviours, often negative ones. Enjoy. Today I spoke with Lee Jameson-Laffey. Lee has done and is doing many amazing things with his life from foster parent to performer to business owner, entrepreneur. We discussed labels close to Lee surrounding alcohol, feelings of isolation and being gay. From tears to laughter Lee brought all of the emotions whilst telling me his story, his journey from a boy knowing who he was to a man simply owning who he is despite the judgements he has faced and overcome over the years...Enjoy If you'd like to work with myself on a physique transformation at any of my units in Durham or Sunderland ...click the link, fill it in and I will be in touch ASAP https://getfit-rtfitness.com/2022tp
On todays episode I spoke to the lovely Cain Quillman. An author, Cain has written his memoirs as a method of therapy, to share his story with the world in the hope that they might help someone. We discuss his first book “Dragged Up and Torn Apart” which saw him labelled the “terrible twins” alongside his brother who at 17 he was separated from. The two spent their early lives causing trouble, fending for themselves and wishing they lived elsewhere with friends… it's a must read… but these stories are real, they happened, and they had a significant impact on the person Cain is today, which we discuss at length, including his fear of death. Today we have Melissa Dunkeld on the Drop the Label Podcast. Melissa has been with RT Fitness for a number of years now and we discussed the label disabled given the fact she is an amputee… we talked women in tech, being clever and then we talked mental health to the extent of attempted suicide, what that meant and how it felt both then and now. From it's OK not to be OK to it's actually alright to be fine, you don't have to put a label on every emotion.
"Boring" On todays episode I'm chatting with Toni Young from East Shore Wellness, a private coaching facility in Seaham. From labels such as “boring” for not drinking the weekend away to the labels often found in the fitness industry. We then chatted bodybuilding and the mental implications of competing in a show and Toni's personal experience of doing so and why placing your happiness in the hands of the scales or how you look in one picture is never a good idea. Enjoy. Wanna join me and my coaching programme?, click link below to start a 90 day journey in our transformation facilities https://getfit-rtfitness.com/2022tp
“Introvert” On todays episode, I have long time friend and possibly longest ever client of RT Fitness John Haigh. A challenge in itself John came onto the podcast as part of his own journey of self discovery and acceptance rather than dropping of the label “introvert”. What is often deemed a negative and has had a negative impact on huge parts of his life, John actually sees it now as a positive element of his character and is moving forwards embracing the label rather than moving to drop it. "Physical appearance" Today on Drop the Label we have Rick Frame. Rick is both a fitness instructor and teacher. As a fitness instructor Rick faced labels imposed on him from his physical appearance but he dug his heels in and didn't let them take over. As a teacher Rick discussed the fundamental requirements of labels in order to actually help children but the reality that teachers are humans prone to judgement too, some of which are made within just 8 days and can last an educational lifetime and beyond. "anxiety" "feminist" On todays episode I have one of RT Fitness longest standing members, Emily Snowdon with whom I've put the world to rights many times over. We discussed labels close to Em such as anxiety, dealing with that particular label and the identity battle that tends to go with it through acceptance that it is ok to ask for help. Em also gave me a short lesson in economics off the back of a feminist debate, a woman's choice to work, equal pay and other issues of the workplace. Todays Labels "Posh", "Skinny and Slut"...I'm chatting with good friend and client Tom Renwick. Tom turned interviewer throughout and we discussed labels such as "Posh", "Skinny and Slut". We also explore class divisions and how they change the tone and use of certain labels. Briefly but almost certainly leaving a lot left unsaid, we touched on mental health too sparking the debate of a "stiff upper lip".
