Ashlyn is an international airline pilot from South Florida whose journey to the flight deck started long before she ever touched the controls. Inspired by her dad's constant traveling and the pilot friends who kept telling her how incredible the job was, Ashlyn's curiosity about flying took off early. For her 17th birthday, her dad surprised her with flight lessons. She was terrified at first… and immediately hooked. While earning a biology degree in college, Ashlyn kept flying, balancing textbooks with time in the sky. After graduation, she made the bold decision to finish her flight hours, working as a flight instructor to build experience. That dedication paid off when she was hired by a regional airline, and today she flies international routes for a major airline. Ashlyn shares what pilot training is really like, the unique atmosphere and teamwork among flight crews, and how she manages jet lag, sleep, and life across time zones. Most of all, her gratitude for this career shines through and I'm genuinely thankful to have met her and to share her story with you. If you've ever wondered what it takes to become a pilot or what life looks like at 35,000 feet, this episode is for you

Both times they talked about his philosophy on writing and both times it touched on techniques and ideas that intersected with things that were relevant to his work on The Last Jedi. Though these interviews focus on the craft of writing and deal as much with Rian's other movies as they do Star Wars, we hope fans of Star Wars and Full of Sith will enjoy them.

Digging into the depths of the strange children shows of the UK, we came across the wonder that is Worzel Gummidge. We tried to make due by just watching the pilot from series 1 and the Christmas special from series 3, with very mixed results.  Join us as we discuss the likelihood of both Worzel and the Crowman murdering children, Anthony wondering if this could be where Adam Sandler got some inspiration, is this really as unhinged as Julie anticipated it being, and could this whole story be potentially set in a post-apocalyptic world? It's not only his friends who are wondering where he is; it's also network executives. They seek the services of a fortune teller, who uses a crystal ball in an attempt to locate David, but all she sees are bars. Following this, they begin auditioning to find a replacement. Drone News Update

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 19, 2025 5:33

Welcome to your weekly UAS News Update. We have four stories for you this week. First, the 2026 NDAA is set to give local police new counter-drone authority, SkyeBrowse releases its biggest update of the year with, a drones-for-good story out of Washington where a drone delivered a life jacket to a man trapped by a flood, and a man pleads guilty after flying his drone over the MLB All-Star game. Let's get to it.First up, the FY 2026 National Defense Authorization Act, or NDAA, has passed the House and is now headed to the Senate. Tucked inside this 3,000-page bill is the SAFER SKIES Act, which for the first time creates a federal framework allowing state, local, and tribal police to detect, track, and even take down drones. Previously, this authority was limited to federal agencies like the DHS and DOD. Now, local officers who complete federal training will be able to use approved counter-UAS systems to mitigate drones that pose a "credible threat" to places like stadiums and critical infrastructure. The push for this was reportedly driven by the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup and the fact that the NFL has documented over 2,000 drone incursions per season for the last three years. The bill also introduces new felony penalties, with up to five years in prison for serious violations involving national defense airspace. And note, this is NOT yet law. This is only the House's version of the NDAA. We haven't seen the Senate version just yet, so this provision may or may not remain in the final law. We'll keep you updated as we see more. Next up, SkyeBrowse has just announced its biggest software update of the year. They've released two new processing modes: SkyeBrowse Rapid and SkyeBrowse Ultra. SkyeBrowse Rapid is designed for speed, especially for first responders in remote areas with bad reception. They claim it's 5 times faster in good reception and up to 20 times faster in bad reception. In one example, they took a 7-minute, 1.5-gigabyte video and processed it into a full 3D model in under two minutes. For those who need maximum detail, there's SkyeBrowse Ultra, which provides 4 times higher quality for photorealistic, lifelike 3D models. This feature will be available for their Premium Advanced customers. On top of that, they've also given their Freemium users a boost. Free users now have access to tools like annotations, drawing, clipping, and distance measurements, which were previously paid features. Our third story is in King County, Washington, where heavy rains caused the Snoqualmie River to flood rapidly, trapping a man on the roof of his vehicle. With the current too strong for responders to enter the water, a sheriff's deputy had a great idea. Instead of waiting for a helicopter, the deputy launched a drone, attached a life jacket to it, and flew it directly to the stranded man. Last up, a story of what NOT to do. A 47-year-old man from Georgia, Mitchell Parsons Hughes, has pleaded guilty to allegedly flying his drone over the 2025 MLB All-Star Game at Truist Park. According to prosecutors, he flew directly into the one-mile TFR that was active for the event. To make matters worse, he was flying an unregistered drone and had no Part 107 or TRUST. Security officials from the FBI, DOT, and FAA spotted the drone immediately and tracked him down. On December 5th, he pleaded guilty to knowingly violating national defense airspace. He was sentenced to six months of probation and a five-hundred-dollar fine. Join us later for happy hour in the community. Welcome back, Pilot. Today, Nik brings a straight-from-the-heart solo episode built around a hard truth in aviation and life: People are jealous of your results, but they're not jealous of your journey. A simple comment overheard at a function sparks a deeper look into insecurity, comparison, fear, and the grit required to chase aviation dreams. This episode is all about self-awareness, humility, and rising above jealousy while still understanding where it comes from — in yourself and in others. Guest Xyla Foxlin focuses on how the FAA and the aviation community can better support mental health issues faced by pilots and other aviation professionals. Foxlin is an engineer and pilot who produced an award-winning video about pilot mental health. Her aviation journey highlights include a Young Eagles flight that cemented her fascination with aviation, owning and maintaining a Cessna 140 that she has flown from coast to coast, a 2025 visit to Oshkosh and regaining her FAA medical certificate.Foxlin discusses efforts with the Pilot Mental Health Campaign (PMHC) to push the Pilot Mental Health in Aviation Act of 2025 through the House of Representatives. She and the PMHC continue to educate the general public on the need to reform how pilot mental health issues are handled. In her personal story, Foxlin had to regain her medical certification and ability to fly after disclosing past mental health-related medical treatments. In the current FAA medical certification system, a significant percentage of pilots hide mental health conditions or avoid treatment entirely because of concern that their medical certification and their livelihood can be taken away.Greg Feith, John Goglia, and Todd Curtis share the breadth of aviation-related mental health concerns, including investigators who may be affected by their work, mechanics who committed suicide or were at risk for committing suicide after an aircraft accident, and the trauma that an entire community may face after a major plane crash. By Rajesh Jethwa, CTO at Digiterre, and co-author of Transform!: The 14 Behaviors Driving Successful Digital Transformation in the Age of Gen AI Modern life runs on an intricate network of technologies so familiar we barely notice them. We see the polished surface of digital services, mobile apps and rapid delivery systems, yet beneath these innovations sits something surprisingly fragile. It is a vast ecosystem of legacy software, outdated infrastructure and deeply embedded organisational routines that were built for a different era. This hidden technology, a blend of code, machinery and human workaround, keeps the world functioning. Increasingly, however, it is showing signs of strain. The more advanced society becomes, the more vulnerable it becomes to failures within this buried architecture. When modern systems falter, the effects can cascade instantly. The British Airways disruption in 2024 made this clear. A single technical fault led to widespread delays and cancellations, stranding thousands of travellers and exposing how dependent airline operations are on tightly meshed systems. Although air travel appears smooth from the outside, its core relies on a patchwork of old and new platforms. When just one piece collapses, everything stalls. Transform, Behaviors Driving Digital Transformation The global CrowdStrike outage offered an even more dramatic demonstration. A flawed update to widely used security software caused computers around the world to crash or lock into endless reboot cycles. Airports, hospitals and corporations all felt the impact. This incident revealed how deeply embedded certain tools have become and how a single error in one system can ripple across continents within minutes. Another example is the UK Post Office Horizon scandal, where faults in an accounting system resulted in wrongful accusations against hundreds of postmasters. This was not only a technology failure but also a failure of change. An organisation that had become overly dependent on a single system assumed that any discrepancy must be human error. When technology becomes unquestionable, it gains authority that can override evidence and experience, with devastating consequences. These events highlight a broader truth. Large scale digital transformation efforts often fail. Studies regularly suggest that between 60 and 70 per cent of such initiatives do not achieve their intended outcomes. Organisations underestimate the complexity of changing systems that underpin everyday operations. They invest in new software without addressing the outdated processes, cultural assumptions and decision making structures that surround it. Technology cannot succeed if it is layered on top of old thinking. High stakes systems are difficult to change because they have become intertwined with human behaviour. Employees develop tacit knowledge that compensates for the shortcomings of old tools. This invisible layer of human patchwork allows outdated systems to survive far longer than they should. The paradox is that these systems seem stable precisely because people are constantly rescuing them. But such arrangements cannot last. As expectations for speed, transparency and security grow, the legacy architecture becomes a bottleneck. Reinvention becomes essential for resilience. The path forward begins with recognising that technology is only one part of the equation. True digital transformation requires rethinking how work flows, how decisions are made and how people collaborate. Organisations need clarity about the purpose their systems must serve today, not the assumptions they inherited from the past. Simplifying processes before upgrading tools reduces complexity and ensures that new technology is not forced to replicate outdated practice. Reinvention also depends on small, continuous experiments rather than large, inflexible programmes. Pilot projects, prototypes and iterative learning build adaptability. They help organisations respond to uncertain...

In this episode of Behind the Prop, Bobby Doss and Wally Mulhern unpack one of the most persistent and underestimated threats in aviation: cockpit distraction. Drawing from both historical airline accidents and modern general aviation trends, they explore how small lapses in attention can escalate into major safety events. The hosts revisit the tragedies of Eastern Airlines Flight 401 and United Flight 173, where professional crews became so focused on minor gear-indicator issues that they stopped flying the airplane—proving that distraction, not mechanical failure, can be the true killer. With the NTSB attributing 15–20% of GA accidents to distraction, the need for proactive management has never been clearer. The conversation moves into the cockpit realities of today's pilots, where heavy reliance on iPads, automation, and touchscreen avionics often leads to excessive head-down time. Bobby and Wally share recent examples from training flights where pilots missed radio calls, misprogrammed GPS units, or became task-saturated simply because tech drew their attention away from flying. They emphasize the importance of preparing devices and routes before takeoff, and using automation deliberately rather than reactively. A key takeaway is that pilots must be willing to self-identify errors, speak up immediately, and assume the mistake is theirs until proven otherwise—a mindset that dramatically improves safety margins. The episode also highlights the critical role of the sterile cockpit, with Bobby advocating its use below 2,500 feet in GA. The hosts explain how nonessential chatter during taxi, takeoff, or climb dilutes situational awareness and can overwhelm newer pilots. They encourage instructors to reduce excessive talking as students advance, creating the “intentional silence” needed for real concentration and independent decision-making.Finally, Bobby and Wally address a commonly misunderstood distraction: open doors during takeoff or initial climb. They explain why an open door is typically benign, why rejecting a takeoff is often riskier, and why pilots must train for these scenarios before facing them unexpectedly. The episode closes with a call to action—pilots should openly discuss distractions, log them, review them, and build habits that keep them anchored to the core principle of aviation: aviate, navigate, communicate.

SYNOPSIS:The lines often get blurred in Moonlighting, and this is one example. David is still in prison, and nobody knows where he is. It's not only his friends who are wondering where he is; it's also network executives. They seek the services of a fortune teller, who uses a crystal ball in an attempt to locate David, but all she sees are bars. Following this, they begin auditioning to find a replacement. We begin to see the auditions, with men in line all dressed up in various outfits that David wore in previous episodes. David is released from solitary confinement and placed in a work gang, where his fellow convicts advise him to marry Maddie. Bert is using his new, temporary title of Blue Moon supervisor, awarded to him by David, to put the employees in line. David witnesses illegal activities by a prison guard, who is about to kill him, but fortunately, a riot starts, allowing David to escape unnoticed. Agnes and Bert decide to start investigating the whereabouts of “Mr. Addison.” The episode features a lengthy musical number performed by the prisoners in the style of "When I Was a Lad" from Gilbert and Sullivan's H.M.S.
