I have been riding for a long long time in traffic. These are PROVEN techniques for survival in traffic. PROVEN! Over 35 years and 100,000 miles in traffic in the Land of Cars and I am not dead. Almost all my riding is in traffic and yet I am not dead despite my penchant for edge riding as it is often called. My advice is ride to the right. Taking the lane is VERY dangerous. Possibly you are easier to see, but being seen is not the same as not being hit. Even if NOT seen, you will not be hit by riding to the right of the lane. Not being hit is the goal. Ride to the right as far as is practicable is the law in California. The kitted out crowd taking the lane antagonizes drivers. Ironically, they depend on drivers to see them and not hit them. My techniques keep you out of the way and by default you are not in the line of traffic. The war between cars and bikes does not have to be. Here you will learn how to commute on your bicycle and NOT DIE. Ultimately, NOT intersecting with a two ton death machine is the goal.

We want to dovetail into the traffic if we want to survive. Some of the advice I give here is controversial, but I do have a lot of years in traffic. Well over thirty years honestly. The fact that I am not dead with so much time and mileage in traffic on a bicycle kind of makes me an expert. That is what I told the judge. LOL

Many have lauded self-driving cars as a boon, especially for cyclists. I beg to differ. I have been writing code for almost as long as I have been riding my bike and I have something to say on the matter.

I have decided that I must wade into the lane position debate for a number of reasons. However, I am not doing so with enthusiasm. I am doing so with great trepidation. I know without a doubt that this is a very controversial subject today. I know that I am going to get a lot of heat over the position I am taking, but I don't feel I can ignore this debate any longer.
