Mark Stallard and Ryan Janz explore the world of politics through the lens of regular working people. Legislation that seems to be "common sense" is often totally destructive, while "weird" and "radical" legislation might save lives, or at least improve them. Politics is a game for those playing it…
Part 2: During every crisis the general public is usually preoccupied by the crisis to give anything else their full attention--if at all. Politicians know this. So it is the perfect time to for governments to push through legislation that might otherwise have been given too much scrutiny for it to pass, or at least to pass without people realizing how bad it is. In this episode, Mark and Ryan reveal the shallowness of federal Liberals who give themselves a pay raise under the guise of charity, PM Justin Trudeau approving the arms deal with Saudi Arabia, as well as Trudeau signing a deal with Amazon to deliver PPE (Personal Protective equipment) around Canada--despite having a perfectly functional Canada Post and Amazon's horrific treatment of it's workers. So it is the perfect time to for governments to push through legislation that might otherwise have been given too much scrutiny for it to pass, or at least to pass without people realizing how bad it is. In this episode, Mark and Ryan talk about shortsighted move by Manitoba PCs to change the election blackout laws, federal Conservatives bid to increase the tax credit laws which will only really benefit the super rich, and federal Liberals breaking election laws by using the government seal for obviously partisan advertising. “Progressive” Conservative MLA, James Teitsma, came out wholeheartedly against a universal breakfast program that would provide poor children with food. Rather than blame the real source of their family’s poverty, he blames the powerless. Wages are market-driven. That means they do not reflect the true value of any position, only what the market can get away with paying. Left to the market, wages would be rock bottom for all workers—even zero. So, in a market economy minimum wage is a legislative requirement for all civilization. Not being paid the value of the work done, is painful enough. But it doesn’t hurt anyone more than the people who are collecting only minimum wage. Full show notes available on www.FixingTheWorld.ca
