Reporting from this past week indicates Sony is abandoning its push to publish more games on PC, a reversal from a six-ish year old initiative that frankly bore little fruit outside of Helldivers 2. And let's be real: Though we were vocal advocates of this approach on the show, a vast majority of the PlayStation fanbase was decidedly not on board. Sony has apparently determined that it's a waste of time to further pursue this path, and that doing so could ultimately eat into their console ecosystem in unacceptable ways. Thus, it's time for many of you to celebrate, as we consider the reasons behind this dramatic course-correction. Plus: Rumors are circulating that Cory Barlog's next game is a God of War spin-off, Bluepoint was apparently eager to work on a Bloodborne remake before behing unceremoniously shut down, Starfield is finally coming to PlayStation 5 this April, Marathon has been mysteriously rated by the ESRB for launch on PlayStation 4, embattled free-to-play shooter Highguard is officially shutting down, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Is Sony investing enough into games for kids? In such a hostile environment, could troubled products like No Man's Sky and Cyberpunk 2077 have launched and turned things around today? Why are some games' Trophies published, even if they go unreleased? Will Dustin continue to compile a collection of pictures of complete strangers on his refrigerator?

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 6, 2026 30:00

Manchmal braucht man etwas anderes.

We break down what Parayko could mean for the Sabres as we await word on the trade being finalized. #28 Holland & Barrett CEO: Social Media Self-Diagnosis Reshaping Health Retail

Anthony Houghton, Chief Executive of Holland & Barrett, joins the Big Boss Interview as social media and online self-diagnosis reshape how consumers approach health and wellness. He describes a retail landscape where customers increasingly arrive in store — or online — having already decided what they need based on influencer content or digital health advice, not all of which is accurate or appropriate to their individual circumstances. In a £110 billion global health and wellness industry, the challenge for established retailers is navigating the gap between what customers believe products do and what they are legally permitted to claim.Holland & Barrett's response has been a major internal reset. Three years ago, the company invested in a dedicated science team to review its entire range. Of approximately 4,500 core products, 2,700 have since been reformulated or upgraded. More than 1,000 own-brand products have been completely overhauled in the past 18 months alone. Labelling presents particular complexity. Products marketed for perimenopause, for example, may feature the term prominently on packaging to help customers find relevant items. Yet detailed ingredient information states that vitamin B6 contributes to hormonal regulation and iron supports normal cognitive function — without referencing perimenopause directly. Strict Advertising Standards Authority rules limit what retailers can claim about specific conditions, creating a disconnect between searchable labels and regulated ingredient statements. Houghton acknowledges many customers may not understand this distinction. The transformation has coincided with strong financial performance. Holland & Barrett reported 11% sales growth — its third consecutive year of double-digit increases — with digital sales up 20% overall and accounting for 21% of total revenue. However, £300 million invested over three years in store refits, supply chain upgrades and internal capability building has weighed on profit margins. Houghton describes the investment as “fixing the foundations”, with efficiency gains expected to restore profitability as the transformation programme matures.Despite digital growth, physical retail remains central to the strategy. The company operates 809 stores across the UK and Ireland, opened nine new sites this year and has completed a major refit programme. Houghton rejects suggestions that the High Street is dead, arguing that physical and digital channels are complementary rather than competitive. Stores now offer personal consultations, experiential elements such as yoga studios in selected locations, and partnerships with diagnostic provider Randox to deliver health MOT blood testing in a growing number of sites.Cost pressures remain acute. Minimum wage increases affect the majority of staff across hundreds of stores. Holland & Barrett pays above the statutory National Living Wage and plans to announce another rise shortly. Rather than passing those costs directly to customers through price increases, the strategy focuses on driving operational efficiencies elsewhere. At the same time, the company has increased investment in colleague training — requiring staff to complete health and wellness training before advising customers — even as many retailers are cutting back.Presenter: Sean Farrington Producer: Olie D'Albertanson Editor: Henry Jones00:16 Will and Sean intro pod 01:40 Anthony Houghton joins BBI 02:00 The growth of H&B 03:30 Self-diagnosing via social media 05:17 Decision to invest in dedicated science team 05:56 2,700 products reformulated in last couple of years 08:42 Which? found supplement doses higher than recommended intake 12:31 Product & label concerns 18:40 Growth in magnesium, creatine and fibre. 23:40 Loyalty schemes 29:31 The High St isn't dead 34:00 Impact of National Living Wage 41:00 Retail as a career choice

The 5 Biggest RMD Mistakes in Retirement

Retirement Revealed

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 24, 2026 14:37

Jeremy Keil explains the 5 RMD (Required Minimum Distribution) mistakes in Retirement and how to avoid them. A retiree recently called for help. It was their first year taking Required Minimum Distributions. They had delayed their first RMD until April of the following year — which meant taking two distributions in one tax year. That part was allowed. In some cases, it can even be strategic. But when they called their IRA custodian and asked, “How much should I withhold for taxes?” they were given the default answer: 10% federal withholding. They assumed that must be right. It wasn't. They ended up short on taxes by more than $10,000 — and owed penalties on top of that. That situation wasn't caused by breaking a rule. It was caused by following the rule without a plan. And that's where most RMD mistakes begin. I recently wrote an article for Kiplinger magazine titled “5 RMD Mistakes That Could Cost You Big-Time: Even Seasoned Retirees Slip Up” and for this week's episode of the “Retire Today” podcast I decided to talk through each of these mistakes in detail. Mistake #1: Waiting Until Age 73 to Create a Plan Turning 73 is not a strategy. If you wait until the government forces your first RMD to think about it, you've already missed years of opportunity. The window between retirement and RMD age is often the most flexible tax-planning period of your life. In those years, you may have: Lower earned income No required withdrawals yet Control over when and how you take distributions That's prime territory for intentional tax planning. Once RMDs begin, you've lost some flexibility. In the KEEP step of the Retirement Master Plan, tax timing matters. RMDs don't happen in isolation. They interact with Social Security, pensions, and brokerage income. Planning ahead—sometimes a decade ahead—can dramatically change the long-term outcome. Mistake #2: Failing to Make Use of Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) This one surprises me every year. RMDs currently begin at age 73 (moving to 75 for those born in 1960 or later). But Qualified Charitable Distributions still start at 70½. That means you can send money directly from your IRA to a charity before RMDs even begin. Why does that matter? Because a QCD: Reduces your IRA balance (lowering future RMDs) Keeps the distribution out of your taxable income May help limit Social Security taxation May help reduce Medicare premium surcharges Many retirees continue writing checks to charities from their checking account, hoping for a deduction. With today's larger standard deduction, many people don't itemize at all. Going directly from IRA to charity is often more tax-efficient—and sometimes dramatically so. If charitable giving is already part of your plan, the tax strategy should be part of it too. Mistake #3: Doing the Wrong Tax Withholding When retirees call their custodian to take their RMD, they're often asked: “How much would you like withheld for taxes?” The default federal withholding is often 10% for IRAs and 20% for 401(k)s. Many people assume, “That must be right.” It often isn't. I recently saw a retiree who delayed their first RMD until April of the following year—which meant taking two distributions in one year. They defaulted to 10% withholding. They ended up underpaying taxes by more than $10,000 and owed penalties. The custodian can't provide tax planning. That's not their role. Before taking an RMD, you need to project: What tax bracket you'll land in Whether additional withholding is necessary How this affects your overall estimated payments Again, this falls under the KEEP step. Don't let the default settings dictate your tax bill. Mistake #4: Not Realizing How Your RMD Income Affects the Rest of Your Tax Return RMDs don't just increase taxable income. They can: Make more of your Social Security taxable Push capital gains from 0% into taxable territory Trigger Medicare IRMAA surcharges Many retirees focus only on their marginal bracket. But the real issue is tax cost, not tax bracket. An extra $20,000 RMD might not just be taxed at 22%. It could cascade into additional taxation elsewhere. That's why projections matter. You don't want to discover these ripple effects after the fact. Mistake #5: Forgetting That the M in RMD means ‘Minimum,' not ‘Maximum' The M in RMD stands for minimum. It does not mean that's the only amount you're allowed to withdraw. You can: Withdraw more than your RMD Complete Roth conversions after satisfying the RMD Send more than your RMD amount to charity (subject to QCD limits) Sometimes taking more than the minimum makes sense—especially if it smooths taxes over multiple years. RMDs are a rule. They are not a retirement strategy. The Bigger Lesson RMDs are not just a government requirement. They are a planning opportunity—or a planning hazard. They affect your income plan (MAKE), your spending plan (SPEND), your tax strategy (KEEP), and even what you ultimately LEAVE behind. The biggest mistake isn't misunderstanding a rule. It's treating RMDs as an isolated event instead of part of a coordinated retirement master plan. Because in retirement, small tax decisions compound just like investment returns may do. And when handled intentionally, RMDs don't have to derail anything at all. Don't forget to leave a rating for the “Retire Today” podcast if you've been enjoying these episodes! #918. Dating advice is everywhere — and somehow it's made dating feel harder. This week, Kaitlyn sits down with Blaine Anderson, a dating coach and matchmaker who works with thousands of men behind the scenes of modern dating. She shares what women rarely get to hear: how men experience dating, why “good guys” get overlooked, and where connections quietly fall apart. They talk attraction, effort vs. interest, dating apps, and how to tell if a man is being intentional or just keeping his options open. With Valentine's Day around the corner, they also get real about feeling behind, comparison, and staying open to love without settling. If dating has you confused, burnt out, or questioning the rules — this episode will make you feel clearer, not broken. If you're LOVING this podcast, please follow and leave a rating and review below!
