Conservative MP and immigration critic Michelle Rempel Garner discusses the Conservative Party's proposal to eliminate Canada's Temporary Foreign Worker Program. She explains how the previous Trudeau government dismantled safeguards across immigration streams, with a particular focus on the TFW program, creating economic distortions that are suppressing wages, lowering productivity, and harming both Canadian and foreign workers. Rudyard Griffiths and Sean Speer examine Prime Minister Mark Carney's recent use of the term "austerity" ahead of the fall budget, examining what this signals for Canada's fiscal direction. They explore the political and practical challenges of implementing spending cuts when two-thirds of the federal budget remains off-limits, and the apparent contradiction between Carney's austerity messaging and expectations of a $92 billion deficit, larger than any deficit under the former Trudeau government. The two consider whether Carney's austerity language is actually targeted at international bond markets rather than domestic audiences. GUESTS: Rebel reporter Angelica Toy and National Telegraph editor Wyatt Claypool Today, we're looking at Premier Danielle Smith's explicit book ban, and her efforts to protect the classics from future censorship after the province moved to restrict graphic sexual content from being presented to children. Plus, an Alberta Next panel discussion got heated over the topic of immigration, as Premier Smith proposed restricting some social services from newcomers, provoking a response from some who said it was going too far and targeting immigrants. And finally, the New Democratic Party's leadership race is set to kickoff, and it comes with a catch: leadership hopefuls must not have more than 50% of their supporting signatures be from straight men. Special Guest: Lise Merle.

The first Moore Butts conversation of the new season is the 22nd in our series of going behind the doors of political intrigue. In this case, the discussion centres around the negotiations that have to take place if anyone is going to make a trade deal with the US President. Gerald Butts is Justin Trudeau's former principal secretary who was in the room when Canada and Trump hammered out a new trade deal in 2018. James Moore is a former Harper-era cabinet minister, and as always, has thoughts on this subject too.

In this episode of The Line Podcast, recorded on Aug. 25, 2025, the hosts start with the return of politics. Carney is striking the right tone, with a new major projects office and a European trip under his belt, but whether the country actually gets its act together is still an open question. Jen explains why she always hated Trudeau's “business case” comments, while Matt notes that the business case for the entire country has been called out by Donald Trump. This episode of The Line Podcast is brought to you by Forestry For The Future. Canadian forestry supports 200,000 workers, generates $87 billion in annual revenue, contributes $21 billion annually to our nation's economy, and provides the products we need to build homes and drive economic growth. While trade barriers from the U.S. are siphoning jobs and investment away, Canada's own approval processes and regulations are preventing critical projects that both prevent wildfires and boost our economic self-reliance. We can and should have programs that expand domestic wood use, advance biomass use and pulp market opportunities, and cut red tape and regulatory barriers. The government of Canada has a clear opportunity to stand up for Canadian forestry at a time of growing global uncertainty. We need real action that puts Canadians first — supporting employees and their families, securing stability for our businesses, and protecting the long-term potential of our sector and its people. To learn more, visit ForestryForTheFuture.ca/The conversation then discusses fascism in the U.S. Matt talks about an essay from a generally reasonable U.S. writer who says the U.S. has crossed the line. Matt isn't convinced, but neither host loves the trendlne. They suggest a test for the viewers and listeners: write down your own personal “red line.” Send them to us. And we'll review in a year. This episode of The Line Podcast is also brought to you by Airbnb. Canada needs to take real action on bringing housing costs down — but experts agree that regulating short-term rentals like Airbnb is nothing more than a distraction. This makes sense when you consider two key statistics: Canada needs 5.8 million homes to reach affordability by 2030, and Airbnbs account for only 0.6 per cent of Canada's overall housing stock. The closer you look, the clearer it gets that Canada needs bold action that addresses the entire housing market, not just 0.6 per cent of it. Additionally, regulating short-term rentals would limit the productive role that Airbnbs play in helping Canadians get by. Did you know that 47 per cent of Airbnb hosts in Canada report that income from hosting has helped them stay in their homes? To learn more about how Airbnb is helping, not hurting, Canada's economy, visit Airbnb.ca/closerlook.In the final stretch, Alberta's battles over book banning take centre stage. Passive-aggressive librarians may have found a way to box in the provincial government. All that and more in the latest episode of The Line Podcast. Ben Trudeau is a Canadian entrepreneur and energy sector innovator from a Montreal-based entrepreneurial family, with significant ties to Alberta's energy industry. He moved to Alberta in 2008 where he co-founded Alberta Free Energy Corp. (ABFE) which specializes in advancing alternative energy production and geothermal engineering. He has authored a paper titled “Albertans, let's put Canada First” which lays out a brief history of Canada and how Quebec has used the current system to better their province. He argues Alberta should follow in Quebec's footsteps and pull back the purse strings that the province has given to the federal government. Tommy and Ben kick off the show by digging into Trump and Netanyahu's incompatible visions for the war in Gaza: a comprehensive peace deal vs. more fighting and annexation. They also discuss the continuing humanitarian disaster in the Strip, horrific violence in the West Bank even as Speaker of the House Mike Johnson visits the occupied territory, and Netanyahu's firing of Israel's attorney general. Then they cover Trump's tariff threats against India and his newly rocky relationship with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, how America has screwed over Lesotho and Switzerland on trade, and Russia's tightening control over citizens' internet access. Also covered: the legal case against former Colombian President Álvaro Uribe, and President Nayib Bukele's move to end term limits in El Salvador. Finally, Justin Trudeau and Katy Perry get cozy in Montreal and State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce reinvents what's possible when it comes to word salad. Then, Ben speaks with Elly Schlein, secretary of Italy's Democratic Party, about what it's like being in opposition to Giorgia Meloni and how progressives can position themselves against the far-right.For a closed-captioned version of this episode, click here.
