Following his big Prop 50 win last week, Governor Gavin Newsom hit the road, denouncing the Democrats' deal to end the federal shutdown, accepting the thanks of worshipful Democrats in Houston, and appearing as the highest-ranking American representative at the U.N.'s climate talks in Brazil. In other news, Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr and OpenAI's Sam Altman say they feel bad about making so much money, Santa Barbara County officials stand bravely athwart common sense and yell stop, and a federal judge orders AG Rob Bonta to explain himself on the state's policies regarding gender fluidity in California schools. On this day in history, we remember the Rickenbackers of California -- the World War I flying ace and his guitar-making cousin. Mark Wolf, a Reagan-appointed federal judge, is resigning after four decades on the bench, and he’s sounding the alarm. In an essay published by The Atlantic, he wrote, “The White House’s assault on the rule of law is so deeply disturbing to me that I feel compelled to speak out. Silence, for me, is now intolerable.” Wolf shared additional context and more of his concerns with Amna Nawaz. PBS News is supported by - https://www.pbs.org/newshour/about/funders. Hosted on Acast. Birth control is the latest battleground in a wave of online misinformation targeting young women — and doctors and reproductive health advocates are sounding the alarm about its impact. But this isn’t your typical fearmongering about birth control coming from Bible-thumpers or conservative men in suits. This new wave is coming from wellness influencers — the ones in matching pastel workout sets — who are linking a “balanced, natural life” with ditching hormonal birth control. Bridget explains to Stuff Mom Never Told You’s Samantha and Anney why this may look like a rebrand, but this kind of misinformation is just as harmful as ever. You can find more information about the safety and effectiveness of birth control in this article from the American Medical Association: https://www.ama-assn.org/public-health/population-health/what-doctors-wish-patients-knew-about-birth-control If you’re listening on Spotify, you can leave a comment there to let us know what you thought about this episode, or email us at hello@tangoti.com Follow Bridget and TANGOTI on social media! || instagram.com/bridgetmarieindc/ || tiktok.com/@bridgetmarieindc || youtube.com/@ThereAreNoGirlsOnTheInternet See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information. David devotes this week's Capital Record to the folly of the “game-changing” idea of a 50-year mortgage. He stands within first principles by allowing risk takers to freely transact, but points out the economic reality of how people who believe they get a cheaper house by paying for it over an extra 20 years are, well, wrong. On Armistice Day, we bring you an episode of Rosebud which opens at the Garden of Remembrance at Westminster Abbey, where Gyles meets veteran and double amputee turned skydiver Al Hodgson. We then take you to Salisbury, and an interview with Sir Nicholas Soames, himself a former soldier who later became a longstanding Conservative member of parliament, recorded live at Godolphin School in aid of the Edward Heath Charitable Foundation. Sir Nicholas talks to Gyles about his remarkable family: his grandfather was Sir Winston Churchill. We hear what Churchill was like as a grandfather and family man, about his unusual daily routine, and about his immense courage. We hear about Clementine Churchill, and about Sir Nicholas's parents - Christopher and Mary Soames, and their distinguished careers. This is a fascinating episode about a great family who were so central to the history of Britain in the twentieth century. Sir Edward Heath's former home in Salisbury Cathedral Close, Arundells, is open to the public and is well worth a visit. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Tucker Carlson's interview with controversial right-wing podcaster Nick Fuentes has snowballed into a bigger conversation that has everyone asking: Does the Right have a serious issue with antisemitism? Victor Davis Hanson explains how conservative icons like William F. Buckley once handled extremists, contrasts that with today's platforms, and explores why some on the right are now flirting with the same rhetoric on Israel that echoes left-wing sentiments. How should the conservative movement handle this divide? Hanson breaks it down on today's episode of “Victor Davis Hanson: In a Few Words.” “I think the reason for the rise of antisemitism is an element, the isolationist base of the MAGA movement, felt that it was the driving force and that it was going to be isolationist and we were not going to get involved in the Middle East. And they were very suspicious of so-called, what they call neocons and what they call Christian Zionists. As Tucker said, he hates Christian Zionists over any other people. Even bin Laden? Al-Qaeda? ISIS? I don't know. But they were losing influence. Donald Trump proved that he is not a neoisolation. He's a Jacksonian. After revealing she failed the bar exam, Kim Kardashian's new legal drama All's Fair has also been panned by critics as the worst TV show to ever exist. So, when you’re one of the most successful women in the world, what does it feel like to fail? And do we all need to embrace the humour in our own ‘flop’ eras? And, the New York Times asked a very simple question: Did women ruin the workplace? The Internet had a lot of thoughts, and we’re here to dissect them. Plus, can you be friends with someone who has a very different political view to you? For many young people, the answer is increasingly no. And, with celebrities like Jennifer Lawrence choosing to keep their politics to themselves, we unpack whether revealing your political leaning is becoming a no-go zone. Far too many Conservatives have huge egos, and spend more time promoting themselves versus promoting conservatism. While I will call out conservatives for their idiocy, e.g. Ben Shapiro telling Trump not to sue Biden's government, or wacky Candace Owens who now gens up clicks on the death of Charlie Kirk, the man who MADE HER, for the most part I'm about the movement. Government shutdown, Senate deal, filibuster—what actually happened? Today I walk through the 60–40 procedural vote where eight Democrats joined 52 Republicans, why Rand Paul broke ranks, and how a “clean CR” differs from this compromise. We unpack what's funded through September versus January, the guaranteed December vote on ACA subsidies, and why the Left's outrage at Chuck Schumer misses the point. Nick Cohen and Robert Saunders, the author and academic, discuss historical political party splits in Britain, particularly in the 1920s when the Liberals split and Labour formed, contrasting with the current situation where both left and right-wing votes are fragmented. Nick and Robert analyse the current political landscape, noting that while the right-wing vote is divided with Nigel Farage being popular, the centre-left could dominate British politics if it remains united. The discussion highlighted the challenges of multi-party democracy under the first-past-the-post system and the potential for new parties like the Greens and a Corbyn-led radical left party to impact the political landscape. They talk about the decline of the two-party system in the UK, highlighting how Labour's popularity has dropped significantly since the 2024 election. Labour barely won a third of the vote in 2024 but still secured a majority of seats under the first-past-the-post system, leading to concerns about the system's fairness. Robert explains that the decline of the two-party system can be traced back to the 1950s, when Labour and the Conservatives together accounted for 97% of the vote, compared to 65% by 2010. They also discuss how Brexit and the implosion of the Liberal Democrats in 2015 temporarily reversed this trend, but Robert believes these were anomalous elections and that the longer-term pattern of decline continues.Tory party is dying on its feet Possibly the most dramatic and most influential event driving current politics is the slow agonising death of the Conservative Party. Robert says "This is a party that used to be anchored in all sorts of important institutions that was very deeply rooted in the world of British business. That was connected to institutions like the Church of England, the armed forces, the kind of voluntarist culture, and that also meant it had a lot of kind of different sources of information and ideas flowing into it. It's either cut itself off from those things, or those things have essentially died. So it's become a kind of tree with no roots, and then I don't think it's entirely surprising, therefore, that it crashed down in the way that it did in 2024.
