This week, Kris Temple from BBC Radio Solent released a chat with Bournemouth Chairman Jeff Mostyn, the first time he has chatted at length for four years. Mostyn sounded re-energised, he sounded motivated, and he didn't sound fearful about the club's future. Some fans are still asking questions, yet some are content - and in this podcast, we chat over what we learned from the Chairman's chat in the company of Sam Davis, Jeff Hayward, Tom Jordan, and BBC Radio Solent's Kris Temple. Jeff was spoken as ever, and he sounded focused, plus, he provided an apology of sorts, an explanation on managerial appointments, dismissals, and the search for a new manager… is it Scott Parker? Sources suggest now that he is NOT close to joining the Cherries, but why would he join anyway? Are we giving this another spin? The boys chat over the potential appointment and ponder what he could bring to the club. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to all our platforms. Please note: this episode was previously released as a Patreon episode and mentions child abuse. Underwood Minnesota is as small-town America as it gets. With a population of around 300 people, it's a rural farmland town, kinda a one-stoplight kind of town. May 20 in Minnesota started out as just like another spring day. The kids were getting excited as school was about to be out for summer break. The weather was great and that summer feeling was coming on strong. One of the residents living a calm life was a 13-year-old named Sarah Ann Rairdon. Remember what was important at 13? Friends, clothes, and oh, and puppy love. Sarah was a great, reliable daughter so when she didn't return home when she was supposed to, no one was immediately panicked. When minutes turn to hours, it becomes obvious something is wrong but who would harm sweet Sarah? The truth was under their noses and more brutal than anyone could imagine. Please Leave a Review! THIS EPISODE COUNTS FOR CE! - but read the disclaimers it might not count for your state. Go here to take the test and get your free CE Credit! Spring Hatfield, RDH, joins Michelle and Andrew on the podcast once again this week. As many of you will remember, Spring is a dental hygienist and co-founder of Masterminds, LLC, who is also a contributing author to RDH Magazine. She has returned today to engage in an examination of the recently published ‘Sources of SARS-CoV-2 and Other Microorganisms in Dental Aerosols' study with our hosts. In today's episode, they review the use of etch in removing stains, Spring's diplomatic approach in her posts, and, of course, the results, conclusions, and takeaways from the study, along with some questions for its authors. They also explore the importance of testing water lines, the definition of HVE and its usage, some studies regarding mouth rinses, some podcast suggestions, Karen Daw's guidelines, and the continued use of face shields. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS: Interview starts: 13:06 Etch use in removing stains Spring's perspective on getting tagged in posts and remaining diplomatic ‘Sources of SARS-CoV-2 and Other Microorganisms in Dental Aerosols' study and a summary of its results The critical importance of testing water lines Two current dental lawsuits The study's conclusions HVE definition and use Questions for the study authors Studies regarding different mouth rinses Some podcast suggestions Michelle's takeaways from the study Karen Daw's guidelines Face shield usage QUOTES: “Spring's out there doing the Lord's work.” “I make sure that I separate my science from my emotions…it's a learned skill to be able to not let your emotions get involved.” “We did the right thing by shutting down and waiting for the research and knowing now what we know.” “I think they are making the assumption, and probably being hopeful, that everybody followed the ethical recommendations from the ABA to shut down. And we are very aware that that was not the case.” “This is a robust, good sound methods. Whatever goes after those methods, he says, is probably accurate and good evidence.” “The point that I'm making with that information is how important it is that we're sterilizing our handpieces.” “What an argument for testing your water lines!” “It disproved anybody's idea that COVID could be spread through dental aerosols.” “It's really interesting that we were looking for one beast and found a completely different beast in our dental office, and that is testing and shocking and treating our water lines.” “I don't think it's something that people do a lot of and I don't think it's talked about nearly as much as it should be.” “They tested on the operator, the assistant, the patient and the environment…it's real world stuff.” “Understanding the sources of microbial bio load in aerosols is the immediate urgency not only for infection control and dental operatories during Covid 19 pandemic, but also to inform best practices in aerosol reduction, mitigation, and abatement in the long term.” “One surprising finding was the discovery of microorganisms in the implant irrigant, which was sterile saline.” “In summary, we find sufficient evidence to reject our null hypothesis that saliva is a potential source of disease transmission during AGDPs. Instead, we identify for the first time that the irrigant used in dental equipment is the primary and major source of microorganisms during AGDPs.” “We also demonstrate that high volume inter-oral evaluators are highly effective in reducing salivary contamination of the surrounding environment. And that preprocedural mouth rinses consistently reduced salivary microbial bio loads.” “ ‘Within the limitations of the small sample side, we conclude that the risk of transmission of SARS-CoV-2 and other respiratory pathogens from aerosolized saliva in dental operatories is moderately low, and that current infection control practices are adequately robust to protect personnel and patients alike.' And I would just like to throw a caveat, too - that is when you actually do proper standard precautions.” “We're not going to be a vector for disease in regards to COVID.” “If we do follow all the aspects of standard precautions, and we reassess our hierarchy of controls, we are great. We are a very safe place to be.” LINKS: A Tale of Two Hygienists homepage - https://ataleoftwohygienists.com/ AToTH on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/aTaleOfTwoHygienists/ AToTH on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/ataleoftwohygienists AToTH on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/atoth/?originalSubdomain=ca PDT Homepage Sources of SARS-CoV-2 and Other Microorganisms in Dental Aerosols Spring's Email
*trigger warning* There is a lot of torture and assault on a minor in this case* - In part one of a two part series Madison tells us the tragic story of Sylvia Likens. In 1965 Sylvia's parents sent her and her younger sister Jenny to live with Gertrude Baniszewski and her seven children. What seemed like it should have been a straightforward boarding agreement quickly went south. Sylvia endured a type of abuse that is honestly hard to talk about. She was going to be a music teacher, she had landed the role of The Fiddler in Fiddler on the Roof for a local play group, and had just played opening weekend to a packed house. Unless otherwise noted, all Web addresses mentioned were functional as of 6-4-21. TRANSCRIPT OF AUDIO From the Cumberland Gap to the Atlantic Ocean, this is Virginia Water Radio for the week of June 7, 2021. MUSIC – ~10 seconds - instrumentalThat's part of “Tropical Tantrum,” composed for Virginia Water Radio in 2017 by Torrin Hallett, a recent graduate of Lamont School of Music at the University of Denver. The music sets the stage for our annual preview of the Atlantic basin tropical cyclone season. We start with some guest voices, calling out names that, if we're lucky, will not become infamous this summer or fall. Have a listen for about 30 seconds, and see if you can guess who—or rather, what—is being named. GUEST VOICES - ~30 sec – “Ana. Bill. Claudette. Danny. Elsa. Fred. Grace. Henri. Ida. Julian. Kate. Larry. Mindy. Nicholas. Odette. Peter. Rose. Sam. Teresa. Victor. Wanda.” If you guessed the names planned for storms that may occur during this year's Atlantic tropical cyclone season, you're right! The Atlantic basin includes the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, and Gulf of Mexico, and the Atlantic tropical cyclone season runs officially from June 1 through November 30. Most Atlantic tropical cyclones occur within this period, but not all of them. For the past six years in the Atlantic basin, named storms have formed before June 1, including Alex in January 2016, and this year, Ana, which strengthened into a tropical storm on May 23. [Editor's note, not in the audio: Other recent pre-June named Atlantic storms include Arlene in April 2017, Alberto in May 2018, Andrea in May 2019, and Arthur in May 2020.]Tropical storms and hurricanes are two categories of tropical cyclones, which are rotating storm systems that start in tropical or sub-tropical latitudes. A tropical cyclone is called a tropical storm—and gets a name—when sustained wind speeds reach 39 miles per hour; at 74 miles per hour, a tropical cyclone is considered a hurricane. Tropical depressions—with wind speeds below 39 miles per hour—don't get named if they never reach tropical storm wind speed,* but they can still bring damaging rainfall and flooding. Hurricane-force storms are called typhoons in northwestern areas of the Pacific Ocean.[Editor's note, not in the audio: A tropical system that never gets above the tropical depression wind-speed level won't be given a name. But a lingering tropical depression that previously was at the wind speed of a tropical storm or hurricane will have a name associated with it.]Before a tropical system of any speed or name barges into the Old Dominion, here are some important preparedness steps recommended by the National Weather Service. Know your zone – that is, find out if you live in a hurricane evacuation area by checking the Virginia Department of Emergency Management's “Know Your Zone” Web site, or contacting your local emergency management office. Assemble an emergency kit of food, water, medicines, and supplies. Have a family emergency plan, including plans for evacuating and for getting in touch with one another in an emergency. Review your insurance policiesto ensure that you have adequate coverage for your home and personal property. And establish ways to stay informed, especially if the power goes out, and be sure you understand the meaning of Weather Service forecast terms. Detailed safety tips for hurricanes and other severe weather are available from the “Safety” link at the National Weather Service Web site, www.weather.gov. Thanks to several Blacksburg, Va., friends for lending their voices to this episode. Thanks also to Torrin Hallett for this week's music, and we close with the last 15 seconds of “Tropical Tantrum.” MUSIC – ~15 seconds - instrumental SHIP'S BELL Virginia Water Radio is produced by the Virginia Water Resources Research Center, part of Virginia Tech's College of Natural Resources and Environment. The other posters in the series cover evacuation planning, strengthening one's home, getting information, and updating insurance. EXTRA INFORMATION ON TROPICAL CYCLONE PREPAREDNESS The following information is quoted from the National Weather Service, ‘Hurricane Safety,” online at https://www.weather.gov/safety/hurricane. Plan for a Hurricane: What to Do Before the Tropical Storm or Hurricane(online at https://www.weather.gov/safety/hurricane-plan)“The best time to prepare for a hurricane is before hurricane season begins on June 1. It is vital to understand your home's vulnerability to storm surge, flooding, and wind. Here is your checklist of things to do BEFORE hurricane seasons begins.Know your zone: Do you live near the Gulf or Atlantic Coasts? Find out if you live in a hurricane evacuation area by contacting your local government/emergency management office or, in Virginia, by visiting https://www.vaemergency.gov/hurricane-evacuation-zone-lookup/. Put Together an Emergency Kit: Put together a basic emergency kit; information to do so is online at https://www.ready.gov/kit. Check emergency equipment, such as flashlights, generators, and storm shutters.Write or review your Family Emergency Plan: Before an emergency happens, sit down with your family or close friends and decide how you will get in contact with each other, where you will go, and what you will do in an emergency. Keep a copy of this plan in your emergency supplies kit or another safe place where you can access it in the event of a disaster. Information to help with emergency plan preparation is online at https://www.ready.gov/plan. Review Your Insurance Policies: Review your insurance policies to ensure that you have adequate coverage for your home and personal property.Understand NWS forecast products, especially the meaning of NWS watches and warnings.Preparation tips for your home are available from the Federal Alliance for Safe Homes, online at https://www.flash.org/. Preparation tips for those with chronic illnesses are available from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, online at https://www.cdc.gov/chronicdisease/resources/infographic/emergency.htm.Actions to Take When a Tropical Storm or Hurricane Threatens(online at https://www.weather.gov/safety/hurricane-action) “When a hurricane threatens your community, be prepared to evacuate if you live in a storm surge risk area. Allow enough time to pack and inform friends and family if you need to leave your home. Secure your home: Cover all of your home's windows. Permanent storm shutters offer the best protection for windows. A second option is to board up windows with 5/8 inch exterior grade or marine plywood, built to fit, and ready to install. Buy supplies before the hurricane season rather than waiting for the pre-storm rush. Stayed tuned in: Check the websites of your local National Weather Service office (online at https://www.weather.gov/) and local government/emergency management office. Find out what type of emergencies could occur and how you should respond. Listen to NOAA Weather Radio or other radio or TV stations for the latest storm news. Follow instructions issued by local officials. Leave immediately if ordered! If NOT ordered to evacuate: *Take refuge in a small interior room, closet, or hallway on the lowest level during the storm. Put as many walls between you and the outside as you can. *Stay away from windows, skylights, and glass doors. *If the eye of the storm passes over your area, there will be a short period of calm, but at the other side of the eye, the wind speed rapidly increases to hurricane force winds coming from the opposite direction.” After a Hurricane(online at https://www.weather.gov/safety/hurricane-after) Continue listening to a NOAA Weather Radio or the local news for the latest updates. If you evacuated, return home only when officials say it is safe. Once home, drive only if necessary and avoid flooded roads and washed-out bridges. If you must go out, watch for fallen objects in the road, downed electrical wires, and weakened walls, bridges, roads, and sidewalks that might collapse. Walk carefully around the outside of your home to check for loose power lines, gas leaks, and structural damage. Stay out of any building if you smell gas, if floodwaters remain around the building, if the building or home was damaged by fire, or if the authorities have not declared it safe. Carbon monoxide poisoning is one of the leading causes of death after storms in areas dealing with power outages. Never use a portable generator inside your home or garage. Use battery-powered flashlights. Do NOT use candles. Turn on your flashlight before entering a vacated building. The battery could produce a spark that could ignite leaking gas, if present.” EXTRA INFORMATION ON TROPICAL CYCLONE NAMES The following information is quoted from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, “Tropical Cyclone Names,” online at http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/aboutnames.shtml, as of 6-8-21.“Since 1953, Atlantic tropical storms had been named from lists originated by the National Hurricane Center. They are now maintained and updated through a strict procedure by an international committee of the World Meteorological Organization [online at http://www.wmo.int/pages/prog/www/tcp/]. “[Six lists] are used in rotation and re-cycled every six years, i.e., the 2019 list will be used again in 2025. The only time that there is a change in the list is if a storm is so deadly or costly that the future use of its name on a different storm would be inappropriate for reasons of sensitivity. If that occurs, then at an annual meeting by the WMO committee (called primarily to discuss many other issues) the offending name is stricken from the list and another name is selected to replace it. Several names have been retired since the lists were created. [More information on the hi
Today we're talking about caregiver burnout and the tools to prevent it. We will be focusing on the family, and more specifically, the family members who have stepped up, or in some cases, been thrust into the role of caring for a family member, expectedly or not. Either way, they are now caring for a family member, and this can add a whole new layer of responsibility, stress, financial sacrifice, personal sacrifice, and emotion into their lives that nothing can really prepare them for. The Tools to Prevent Caregiver Burnout is designed to help equip them with just that - the tools to avoid becoming burned out. We've covered topics before to help family caregivers out and if you are facing specific issues or are wanting to learn more about caregiver resources, tips, and information make sure to visit our show page or our website to find more information and remember if you have specific topic that you would like to see covered here at All Home Care Matters you can reach the show using our secure form and someone will respond. Let's get started. First, what is caregiver burnout? According to the Cleveland Clinic, caregiver burnout is a state of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion that can occur when caregivers don't get the help they need, or if they try to do more than they are able, physically or financially. Caregiving is a worthwhile and rewarding experience, but if you are not taking care of yourself while you take care of others, it is not sustainable. In order to do what is best for your loved ones, you have to do what is best for yourself first. A large number of family caregivers, nearly 85 percent, do not receive any sort of respite care. Many caregivers don't seek respite care due to cost and not knowing who to turn to. Friends and family members make great resources for respite care. They may be able to step in and sit with your loved one while you run a few errands or do something fun for yourself. Adult Day Care programs are great for caregivers with full-time jobs, and they often include medical and therapeutic help, as well. Caregiver burnout can lead to unwanted health problems, such as depression, fatigue, sleep disorders, and even elder abuse or neglect. It's important to prevent caregiver burnout not only for yourself, but for those you are caring for, as well. Severe caregiver burnout can be hard to overcome, which is why we want to give you the tools to prevent caregiver burnout before it even happens. It's important to note that there are two sides of the caregiver relationship. The care receiver is going through many lifestyle changes, as well during this time. They may become upset with you and might be angry that they can no longer do things for themselves anymore but try to not let this bring you down. Now, I know how hard this is, but if you can put aside the hurtful things your loved one may say or do and try to remember that they love you, it will make caregiving so much easier. And, if you're having any difficulties or feelings of sadness, seek out professional help. A therapist can be immensely helpful during this time, and, when your time as a caregiver ultimately comes to an end, they can help with the grieving process, too. Communicating with family and friends about your situation can also be a problem that leads to caregiver burnout. Using a platform, like CaringBridge, to post updates on your loved one's situation can relieve some of the pressure of having to keep up with communications. You might also delegate communications about your situation to another family member or friend so that you don't have to shoulder the burden alone. The most important thing you can do to prevent caregiver burnout is to give yourself a break, no matter how small. Getting away, for a weekend or an hour, can help you come back refreshed and ready to continue caring for your loved one. If you know someone that has recently become a caregiver, share today's episode with them so that they can start preventing burnout before it even happens. Having the tools and support you need can make caregiving a little more easier. On October 1, 1988 two people entered Presque Isle Park and only one came out alive. The question of who killed Paul Girard on a sacred Native American chief's grave may soon be answered. The key to solve the 33-year-old cold case may be buried in Lake Superior or it might be with scientists in Michigan. Sources for this episode cannot be listed here due to character limitations. This episode I discuss endurance: our ability to perform effort over extended amounts of time. I describe the four kinds of endurance: muscular endurance, long duration (single-set) efforts, and the two kinds of high intensity interval training that can benefit our brain and various systems of our body. I discuss the fuel systems they each rely on and how to build up your capillary beds in muscle, and in the brain to increase oxygen utilization or improve postural endurance. I discuss efficiency of effort and maximizing quality of effort, as well as the simplest hydration formula. I review how our heart literally gets stronger (as a muscle) when we oxygenate muscles properly and ways to warm up with and improve respiration/breathing. I also discuss motivation for long bouts of work and the visual physiological basis of the "extra gear" we all can leverage for effort. Finally, I review how accelerating as we fatigue can allow us to access untapped energetic resources. As always, both science, mechanism and tools are discussed throughout. On this week's episode of Fast Facts - Perio Edition your host, Katrina Sanders, RDH takes a look at prophylactic antibiotics for the reduction of potential infective endocarditis. Quotes: “As we've continued to see research unpacking some of the risks associated with utilizing antibiotics before a dental procedure, we've actually found that there are incredible risks associated with overuse of antibiotics in our patient population.” “In fact, the guidelines note that people who are at risk for infective endocarditis are actually regularly exposed to oral bacteria during activities like brushing or flossing. And so the statement remains.” “New research from the American Heart Association is encouraging optimal oral health as a key component to reducing the risk of infective endocarditis and may play a more profound role than the concerns of bacterial seeding and subsequent utilization of antibiotics prophylactically before dental procedures.” Resources: DentistRX: https://www.dentistrx.com More Fast Facts: https://www.ataleoftwohygienists.com/fast-facts/ Katrina Sanders Website: https://www.katrinasanders.com Katrina Sanders Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thedentalwinegenist/ Sources: Wilson W, Taubert KA, Gewitz M, et al. In 1838, Frenchwoman Henriette d'Angeville set out to climb Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in the Alps, against the advice of nearly everyone she knew. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll follow d'Angeville up the mountain to fulfill what she called "a monomania of the heart." We'll also escape Australia in a box and puzzle over a fixed game. Intro: In 1986, Florida bankruptcy judge A. Jay Cristol issued an order inspired by "a little old ebony bird." Puzzling poet S.R. In this week's listener request episode, we go to Annesley Woodhouse as Billie tells us of a bizarre set of circumstances that led to a double manhunt in a quiet village. Robert Boyer and Keith Frogson, aka Froggy, had both previously worked in the coal mine in Annesley Woodhouse and lived only meters away from one another but one day, a tragic circumstance would lead one of them to take the other's life.Meanwhile, Terry Rodgers, a violent woman-hater, had split from his wife. His newly married daughter offered him a place to stay and he set out to seek revenge on his estranged wife in the cruelest of manners. These two cases would collide and lead to an enormous double manhunt.
