In the first podcast, study PI and clinical psychologist, Dr. Erica Scioli, and exercise physiologist, Dr. James Whitworth, discuss how Dr. Scioli’s 12-week exercise study can positively impact anti-stress and anti-pain neurohormones such that Veteran’s suffering from chronic pain and PTSD can experience associated improvements in pain and PTSD related symptoms as well as improve overall functioning and quality of life. In the second podcast, Neuropsychologist, Dr. Mike Esterman gives an overview as to how regular exercise may improve some symptoms of PTSD and related concerns such as mood, sleep and attention/concentration.

In this podcast, Dr. Erica Scioli, clinical psychologist and study Principle Investigator, and Dr. James Whitworth, exercise physiologist and former combat veteran, discuss a recently funded National Institute of Health study entitled “Neurobiological Mediators of Self-Regulatory and Reward-Based Motivational Predictors of Exercise Maintenance in Chronic Pain and PTSD”.  The many physical and psychological benefits of exercise, as well as specific exercise related benefits to PTSD and chronic pain conditions, are highlighted.  In addition, anti-stress and anti-pain neurohormones, found to be low in chronic pain and PTSD conditions, which can be enhanced through exercise based testing and training,  are described. The potential for exercise induced improvements in these neurohormones to prevent the transition from acute to chronic pain and to help interested individuals taper safely from related medications are mentioned.  Finally, Dr. Scioli’s preliminary career development study findings, through VA Rehabilitation, Research and Development, are described.  Trial information is provided in order to contact Dr. Scioli if interested in participating in this newly funded study.

In this podcast, Dr. Michael Esterman, Staff Scientist in the National Center for PTSD and Associate Director of the Neuroimaging Research for Veterans (NeRVe) Center at VA Boston, discusses how PTSD, chronic pain, and related conditions facing our returning Veterans can impact cognitive functioning, such as the ability to concentrate, avoid distraction, perform complex executive functions, and stay motivated. He also describes the brain systems that can be impacted by these clinical conditions. Finally Dr. Esterman discusses how a recently funded study entitled “Neurobiological Mediators of Self-Regulatory and Reward-Based Motivational Predictors of Exercise Maintenance in Chronic Pain and PTSD” can potentially improve these clinical conditions, cognitive/motivational problems, and ultimately improve brain functioning and quality of life.
