Insurance premiums doubling… tripling… and companies still denying claims. Should you just self-insure and be done with it—or will that decision wreck your finances when disaster hits? In this episode of Farming Without the Bank, we dig into Chapter 8: Building Your Warehouse of Wealth and talk about what self-insuring really looks like using cash value life insurance, and where it absolutely does not make sense to go it alone.

The health and wellness industry loves to tell women they're broken — and then sell them the fix. In this unfiltered and slightly unhinged solo episode, Nicole Kalil calls out wellness culture for what it too often is: rebranded diet culture, influencer-led misinformation, and shame dressed up as self-care. From green juice guilt to inflammation fear-mongering to TikTok experts blaming women for their own illnesses, Nicole takes aim at an industry that claims to prioritize longevity and quality of life — while obsessing over looking younger, smaller, and more “acceptable.” She shares her own expensive experiments with wellness trends, what actually helped, what didn't, and why one-size-fits-all solutions are a massive red flag. This episode is a permission slip to trust your body, question the algorithm, and stop outsourcing your health decisions to people with discount codes and zero accountability. Because real wellness isn't about perfection — it's about agency, discernment, and self-trust. Thank you to our sponsors! Sex is a skill. Beducated is where you learn it. The Hidden Dangers of Alternative Sweeteners on Liver Health. Registered dietitian Leyla Muedin weighs in on the rising concerns about metabolic dysfunction associated steato liver disease (MASLD), previously known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Leyla discusses the findings of recent research from Washington University at St. Louis, revealing that sugar alcohols like sorbitol, often considered healthier alternatives to refined sugar, may actually be harmful to liver health. She explains how gut bacteria can convert sorbitol into fructose, leading to detrimental effects on the liver. Leyla underscores the prevalence of MASLD in the adult population and its association with obesity and cardiometabolic conditions, emphasizing the need for caution in the consumption of alternative sweeteners.

There's an art — and a surprising amount of psychology — behind giving a great compliment. When done well, flattery can strengthen relationships, build trust, and make people more receptive. When done poorly, it can feel awkward or manipulative. This episode begins with what research says about how to give and receive compliments the right way. https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/evidence-based-living/202109/the-psychology-compliments-nice-word-goes-long-way Americans buy an astonishing amount of cheap stuff — souvenirs, knick-knacks, novelty items, gadgets — most of which quickly lose their appeal and end up forgotten in drawers or closets. Why are we so drawn to these things in the first place? And why do they so often disappoint us? Wendy Woloson joins me to explain the deep cultural, emotional, and historical forces behind our love of “cheap crap.” She's an associate professor of history at Rutgers University–Camden and author of Crap: A History of Cheap Stuff in America (https://amzn.to/3M9M9WM). When it comes to health, many people may be thinking about exercise all wrong. Staying healthy isn't just about gym workouts or formal exercise — it's about how much you move throughout the entire day. Small movements, done consistently, can have a powerful impact on longevity and overall fitness. Juliet Starrett explains why everyday movement matters more than you think and how to easily build it into your routine. She's co-author of Built to Move (https://amzn.to/3ZwADHH) and host of The Ready State podcast.(https://thereadystate.com/podcasts/) And finally — if you're someone who doodles while listening, you may not be distracted at all. Research suggests doodling can actually improve focus and memory. In one of the most thought-provoking health conversations on the show, Lo sits down with Dr. Brennan Spiegel — physician, professor, researcher, and director at Cedars-Sinai — to explore a powerful idea: many of the symptoms people live with every day may not be random at all.Fatigue. Bloating. Brain fog. Digestive issues. Feeling older than your age. These experiences have become so common that they're often dismissed as stress or “just life.” But this conversation reveals how the body may be responding to deeper forces — including gravity, posture, modern movement patterns, and the intricate relationship between the gut and the brain.Dr. Spiegel explains how physical alignment, core stability, nervous system recovery, and even bathroom posture influence digestion and overall well-being. The discussion also dives into the gut microbiome and why the digestive system plays a central role in mood, energy, and serotonin production — far beyond what most people realize.Blending research, physiology, and practical insights, this episode offers a new lens for understanding why so many people feel “off” — and how small shifts in daily habits may support the body in ways that are both simple and profound. For anyone who has wondered why their energy is low, their digestion feels unpredictable, or their body doesn't feel quite right, this conversation delivers answers, perspective, and a path forwardSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

In 1979, the people of Iran took to the streets to topple the Shah. This year they are back in the streets shouting “Long Live The Shah”. How did this happen? How did a country which so volcanically threw out the Shah in 1979 want the same family back again in 2026? What are the parallels between the Iranian Revolution then and the protests today? William and Anita are joined by Scott Anderson, author of King of Kings: The Fall of the Shah and the Revolution That Forged Modern Iran, and Ramita Navai, documentary-maker and author of City of Lies. Disclaimer: We recorded these episodes on January 17th 2026. The US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency has confirmed that 5,459 protestors in Iran have died, and the organisation is investigating 17,031 more. Two senior officials of Iran's Ministry of Health have reported that as many as 30,000 people have been killed. In such a volatile situation, predictions are difficult to make and these figures are ever changing. CLICK HEREWho we areBlock Club Chicago is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit news organization dedicated to delivering reliable, relevant and nonpartisan coverage of Chicago's diverse neighborhoods. We believe all neighborhoods deserve to be covered in a meaningful way.We amplify positive stories, cover development and local school council meetings and serve as watchdogs in neighborhoods often ostracized by traditional news media.Ground-level coverageOur neighborhood-based reporters don't parachute in once to cover a story. They are in the neighborhoods they cover every day building relationships over time with neighbors. We believe this ground-level approach not only builds community but leads to a more accurate portrayal of a neighborhood.Stories that matter to you — every daySince our launch seven years ago, we've published more than 30,000 stories from the neighborhoods, covered hundreds of community meetings and send daily and neighborhood newsletters to more than 150,000 Chicagoans. We've built this loyalty by proving to folks we are not only covering their neighborhoods, we are a part of them. Some of us have internalized the national media's narrative of a broken Chicago. We aim to change that by celebrating our neighborhoods and chronicling the resilience of the people who fight every day to make Chicago a better place for all.

In this episode, Jim LaValle RPh, CCN, offers guidance for GLP-1 use at every stage for lasting optimal health, along with insights on the benefits, challenges, and proper usage. In this Think Thursday episode, we explore how the human brain evolved to use discomfort as information—and what happens when modern life removes nearly all friction, effort, and delay. Our brains weren't designed for constant comfort. Discomfort once served as critical feedback, helping guide behavior, attention, rest, and problem-solving. But in today's world of instant gratification and instant relief, discomfort is often treated as a problem to eliminate rather than a signal to interpret. This episode unpacks why that shift matters for brain health, motivation, resilience, and long-term satisfaction—and how intentional discomfort can support a hedonic reset. In this episode, we discuss:Why discomfort evolved as a key feedback mechanism in the human brainHow instant relief interrupts the brain's ability to learn from discomfortThe difference between regulation and comfort from a neuroscience perspectiveHow highly concentrated, low-effort rewards shape motivation and satisfactionThe concept of hedonic adaptation and why “enough” keeps movingWhat a hedonic reset actually is (and what it isn't)How intentional discomfort supports nervous system regulationThe role of dopamine, effort, and delay in sustaining motivationWhy distress tolerance is a foundational skill for behavior changeHow identity shifts through repeated, slightly uncomfortable choicesExpert perspectives referenced:Dr. Anna Lembke, author of Dopamine Nation, on pleasure–pain balance and modern reward concentrationDr. Andrew Huberman on dopamine signaling, effort, and motivationJames Clear on identity following behaviorInspiration from a conversation on the Mel Robbins Podcast with Dr. LembkeOne gentle experiment to try this week:Choose one moment per day when you notice mild discomfort—boredom, restlessness, or the urge to distract—and pause instead of fixing it.Examples:Standing in line without reaching for your phoneSitting with boredom for 60–90 secondsLetting an urge rise and fall without reactingNotice:Where you feel the sensation in your bodyWhat thoughts show upWhether the feeling changes on its ownThis isn't about forcing discomfort or pushing through distress. It's about teaching your nervous system that discomfort is tolerable and temporary—and that awareness alone can create change.Key takeaway:Discomfort isn't a problem to solve. It's information to work with.In a culture built around instant relief and effortless reward, intentional discomfort can be a powerful way to restore balance, protect motivation, and support long-term brain health. ★ Support this podcast ★
