Sermons from our Sunday Services in Jersey City, NJ
It is so important for us to be seen & heard… and hopefully known & loved. It is so tough to find safe spaces today. This is particularly true in the times we live in. It was helpful to sit in the truth of God’s personal knowledge & presence for us all in Psalm 139. Permalink

James closes out this letter discussing a variety topics worth its own deep-dive. But for this message, we focused on two things: patience & prayer - particularly appropriate with the beginning of Advent. (James 5:7-18)Apple PodcastsGoogle Podcasts
God is God and we are not. We’ve been reminded of this reality over and over this year. Even as we enter into Thanksgiving week, rather than coming together to enjoy food with loved ones, we are all encouraged to stay distanced out of love & protection for each other. So tough. We are not in control. But in actuality for Christ followers, yielding control is a part of our DNA. By our faith’s humble confession, we yield our hearts & and our plans willingly into the hands of the One we trust. (James 3:13-17 & 4:1-17)Apple Podcasts (iPhone)Google Podcasts
We often fail to realize just how powerful our words are. Often without much thought or effort, we put words out there that might as easily build up as they tear down. Let’s be aware of the power we wield. Even at a historically challenging moment, James called the early church to following Jesus’ way - even down to how we used our words to influence others. We can take that challenge today. It seems like a perfect time to wield our words with thoughtfulness, hope, & grace (James 3:1-12)Apple Podcasts (iPhone)Google Podcasts
1st century church leader & half-brother of Jesus, James reminds readers that the world has no need or use for a church to “have faith” yet have no actions behind it. Jesus saves us into life with Him, and for the rest of our rescued lives, our faith is lived out as a loving response to His grace. Our faith is only useful & alive when it is backed up by actions. Powerful reminder. (James 2:12-26)Apple Podcasts (iPhone)Google Podcasts
With so much at stake this year, particularly with the 2020 election this week, where do we even begin? As we bear this weight together, why don’t we begin by praying. Praying together in unity under the heart & words of Jesus. (Matthew 6:9-13 & John 17:20-26)Apple Podcasts (iPhone)Google Podcasts
Favoritism - unjustly favoring certain people over others cannot go unchecked - especially among communities of faith who follow Jesus. Are the rich more valuable than the poor? Are some more worthy than others? Unfortunately, particularly in 2020, such fractures & injustices are all too normal. In the midst of all this, Jesus calls us (yes, us - the church) to be His vehicle of good news & renewal. Wow, let’s discuss how we might step towards this together. (James 2:1-9)Apple Podcasts (iPhone)Google Podcasts
Even in the most challenging times, God doesn’t “take it easy” and expect any less of us. He loves us too much - He considers us His “prized possession” and therefore challenges us toward a life of more impact & deeper experience. Despite the lies we sometimes believe, God is not out to trip us up - in fact, He’s inviting us to live a life that is marked by integrity, wholeness & loving service for those most vulnerable around us. (James 1:12-27)Apple Podcasts (iPhone)Google Podcasts
How do we live out our faith in this historically challenging time? Together, let’s look to one of the most practical books in the New Testament Bible. It seems we can learn much from the scattered, persecuted, early church for whom this New Testament letter is written. We’re scattered in this pandemic. We continue to face trials & temptations. We need wisdom. Let’s see what God has for us. (James 1:1-12)Apple Podcasts (iPhone)Google Podcasts
Sometimes the most important conversations with God happen by simply positioning ourselves to sit in His presence. It’s not always a burning bush. It’s not always in the shadow of a chorus of angels. Let’s approach Jesus’ table and allow Him to lead a gracious, reckoning in our life. (John 21:4-17)Apple Podcasts (iPhone)Google Podcasts
Jesus envisions a life for us as Workers among Wolves. The heart of the message He invites us to bring is one of renewing rest for the Weary.(Matthew 9-11)Apple Podcasts (iPhone)Google Podcasts
