SCRIPTURE: Joshua 10:12-14SHOW NOTES: For your spiritual journey, please visit our ministry website, Discover God's Truth, to access additional Bible study resources. We are excited to explore the prayers of individuals in the Bible in our new series, The Power of Prayer. Today, we will look closely at Joshua 10:12-14. A faithful leader offered a bold prayer. God heard his request, suspended the laws of nature, and granted the Israelites a miraculous victory! "At that time, Joshua spoke to the Lord in the day when the Lord gave the Amorites over to the sons of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, “Sun, stand still at Gibeon, and moon, in the Valley of Aijalon.” And the sun stood still, and the moon stopped until the nation took vengeance on their enemies." Joshua 10:12-13The prayer of Joshua serves as a powerful expression of faith, showcasing a wise leader and illustrating God's sovereignty and divine intervention. God answered Joshua's prayer by causing the sun and moon to stand still. This prolonged the day and allowed the Israelites to achieve their victory. Do you often "talk to the Lord?” Joshua had a close, personal relationship with the Lord and communicated with Him openly! We can learn valuable lessons from Joshua's life. Shownotes Do you ever feel unequipped to handle life and all it throws you? Sometimes walking in grief means being brave enough to move forward even when you don't feel prepared. Today's episode navigates through the bible passages of Joshua 1:1-9. Andrea looks at the story of Joshua after the death of Moses. This story reminds us that God equips us even in the midst of our grief and even goes before us to prepare the way. Listen in and explore this beautiful scripture that gives hope even in our moments of darkness.  Scripture  Joshua 1:1-9 Divine Promise of Assistance. 1  After Moses, the servant of the LORD, had died, the LORD said to Moses' aide Joshua, son of Nun: 2  * Moses my servant is dead. So now, you and the whole people with you, prepare to cross the Jordan to the land that I will give the Israelites. 3  a Every place where you set foot I have given you, as I promised Moses. 4  * All the land of the Hittites, from the wilderness and the Lebanon east to the great river Euphrates and west to the Great Sea, will be your territory.b 5  No one can withstand you as long as you live. As I was with Moses, I will be with you:c I will not leave you nor forsake you. 6  Be strong and steadfast, so that you may give this people possession of the land I swore to their ancestors that I would give them. 7  d Only be strong and steadfast, being careful to observe the entire law which Moses my servant enjoined on you. Do not swerve from it either to the right or to the left, that you may succeed wherever you go. 8  Do not let this book of the law depart from your lips. Recite it by day and by night,e that you may carefully observe all that is written in it; then you will attain your goal; then you will succeed. 9  I command you: be strong and steadfast! Do not fear nor be dismayed, for the LORD, your God, is with you wherever you go. Journaling Questions 1. Why does grief sometimes feel like a burden to take on responsibilities? How does Joshua 1:1-9 remind us that God is with us?  2. God reminds us he will never abandon us. He also provides people in our lives to help us in loss.  Who in your life can be a source of comfort in times you feel all alone?  3. Do you ever feel overwhelmed in grief at the responsibilities that lay out before you? How can you rely on God to know he is ahead of you on the journey?  4. How can reading the scriptures be a place of comfort?  5. What reminder does Andrea share about the relationship of the Father and Son role in grief?  6. Even in times of hard times, these are the times of thanksgiving. Find something(someone) you are grateful for right now. How has this been a gift to you?  7. In Joshua 1:6 Andrea points out suffering produces greatness. How can you see your suffering as a way of preparing you for something greater?  8. What are ways God helps you when you can't help yourself?  9. What do you think it means to be steadfast? How can you be steadfast as you endure grief?  10. Meditate on Joshua 1:1-9. Read through this several times. Record your thoughts or feelings and listen to his words.  Let God speak to you. What do you hear in the scripture?  11. What is your mourning glory? Scott begins by telling the story of a man who lost access to his cryptocurrency, using it as a metaphor for how we sometimes struggle to access what God has promised us. The sermon is centered around the Israelites entering the Promised Land in the book of Joshua, emphasizing that while God promised them the land, they had to take action, such as crossing the Jordan River and conquering Jericho, to claim it. The concept of "walking out the premise" is introduced, which means that in order to receive God's promises, we must take steps of faith. Scott also highlights Rahab's faith and how she grasped God's promise, leading to her significant role in biblical history, and concludes by encouraging listeners to trust in God's promises and be courageous in their battles.

New Hope Daily SOAP - Daily Devotional Bible Reading

Daily Dose of Hope July 1, 2024 Day 2 of Week 14   Scripture:  Joshua 18-21; Psalm 15; Luke 18   Welcome back to the Daily Dose of Hope, the devotional and podcast that complements the New Hope Church daily Bible reading plan.  As we move into a new month, I do hope you will take some time and reflect on what you have learned so far from our reading.  We've been at this for three months.  I have learned a great deal and hope you have too!   Let's get right into the Scripture!  We will start with the book of Joshua.  In chapters 18 and 19, we find Joshua completing the distribution of land.  Some of it still needs to be conquered but they are dividing it nonetheless.  They know that God will give it to them.  In chapter 20, there is a discussion about cities of refuge.  This is really interesting.  These were cities to which people who accidentally killed someone could flee and stay safely until they received a trial.  They protected people from blood revenge, which would have been common at the time (think an eye for an eye), in which a family member avenges the death of a relative.    Chapter 21 details the towns designated for the Levites.  Remember, the Levites were those who were tasked with helping the priests and taking care of the tabernacle.  There were forty-eight towns in which they could live, along with pasture where they could keep their flocks.   Luke 18 is our New Testament chapter for today.  This is a great chapter with several parables and healings.  I'd like to focus on the parable of the persistent widow.  I've always found this to be a fascinating parable.  Jesus uses two opposing characters to make an important point about prayer.  First, we have a judge who is arrogant and without integrity.  Then, we have a widow, who continues to go to the judge for help from her adversary. A widow at the time would have represented helplessness and vulnerability. She must not have had money to bribe the judge so she does the only thing she can–she pesters him! She will not leave him alone until he gives her justice.  Since even an unjust judge can do justice, how much more should we expect from a loving, righteous God?   God wants his people to be persistent in prayer.  Don't give up! God will answer, although it may not be in our timing or in the way we desire.  But God always answers.  Is there some situation or person for which you have stopped praying?  Be like the persistent widow. Continue to plead before a loving and just God.    The rest of this week, we will have several different hosts.  Enjoy!   I will be back with my daily devotionals on July 7th.   Blessings, Pastor Vicki

Daily Dose of Hope June 30, 2024 Day 1 of Week 14   Scripture:  Joshua 14-17; Luke 17   Welcome to the Daily Dose of Hope, the devotional and podcast that complements the New Hope Church daily Bible reading plan.  It's Week 14!  Let's get right into our Scripture for today.   Let's start with Joshua, chapter 14.  They are continuing to divide the land among the tribes.  In this chapter, there is this interesting passage about Caleb.  If you remember, Caleb was one of the original spies that entered Canaan.  Only he and Joshua declared that the Israelites could conquer the land; the other spies were fearful and bullied them for their statements, to the point they were ready to stone Caleb and Joshua.  Caleb makes the point that he stayed faithful and has lived honoring God.  Basically, he had come asking for what was promised to him.  Thus, Joshua blessed Caleb with Hebron.  Just so you know, Hebron was (and still is) a city in Judea, in a mountainous area.  It was known for its fertile soil, good for growing fruit and vineyards.  This was prime property!  Caleb is indeed being rewarded for his trust and faithfulness.    The inheritance of the tribe of Judah, including its boundaries and cities, are described in painstaking detail in Joshua 15.  There is also a brief narrative in the middle of the chapter about Caleb's second inheritance.  I'm not going to go over it much here but it's an interesting read.  Caleb offers his daughter in marriage to the person who defeats the people of Kiriath Sephur.  After a brief interaction with his daughter, in which she asks for springs of water to go along with their land, the listing of details continues.   If you get a chance, reread the final verse of the chapter.  It states that the tribe of Judah was unable to defeat the Jebusites, a group of people who lived in Jerusalem. This just leaves one to wonder.  In all other battles, God clearly stood on the side of the Israelites, ensuring they had total and complete victory.  What was different here?  For some reason, the tribe of Judah settled.  They seemed resigned to the idea that the Jebusites would remain part of the landscape.  Of course, we know that allowing the pagan people to remain in the land could prove dangerous.  The Israelites were easily tempted to fall into a pattern of idolatry.  By the time of King David (roughly 1000 BC), the Jebusites are defeated and that all of Jerusalem belongs to Israel.  I guess we will soon find out how having pagans living in their midst affects the faith of the inhabitants of Jerusalem.   Joshua 16 and 17 continue with the division of land, specifically for the tribes of Ephraim and Manasseh.  Manasseh complains a bit that theirs isn't big enough and Joshua tells them to conquer some more area.  They were fearful of the Canaanites living in those areas but Joshua does not let up.  He basically says, “If you want more, you need to work for it.  You must go conquer the Canaanites.”  Okay, let's move into the New Testament – Luke 17.  I want to discuss the middle passage about the healing of the lepers.  This is a wonderful text. Here are just a few reflections:    First, Jesus told the men to show themselves to a priest while they still had leprosy.  It was as they went that they were cured.  If the priest examined them and they were no longer sick, then they were able to behave like normal people again, socialize, and live normal lives.  But walking to the priests while they still had leprosy meant trusting God even when they didn't really have grounds to do so. They really didn't know what was going to happen. They could have gotten to the priests and still been sick and been yelled out or banned or worse.  But they had faith and trusted Jesus. That's a definition of faith–trusting in what we cannot prove.  In Hebrews11:1 it's described as "the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen."  If we want everything plain and clear before we take a step of faith, it's not really faith. Faith is trust, even when we don't understand and even when the evidence is against us.    It's interesting that the one who comes back is a Samaritan.  Samaritans were enemies of Jews; they hated each other.  So why was he the one to come back, rather than the Jews?  Maybe he had a deeper sense of what had been done for him.  Maybe the Jewish men felt entitled, like they deserved a healing and the Samaritan didn't.  Regardless, it speaks of God's grace to everyone.  The men's healing doesn't depend on them coming back to say thanks.  Jesus heals them anyway; it's not as if the healing of the other nine would be miraculously withdrawn because they didn't return.  God does lots of good things for everyone, whether they acknowledge it or not.  He makes the sun shine on the righteous and unrighteous and the rain fall on the just and the unjust (Matthew 5:45).    There are many people who are not Christians, but who are still blessed.  At one level, Christians ought just to be the people who acknowledge what God's done for them, and turn back to say "Thank you."  What do you need to thank God for?  Even when circumstances are hard, we are called to spend time rejoicing in what God has blessed us with.  It's so easy to fall into an attitude of negativity and complaining.  But God wants us to have an attitude of gratitude, spending more time recognizing how he has healed us, blessed us, saved us, taken care of us, and loved us rather than focus on all the crummy stuff.  There is much to be grateful for.   We'll chat again tomorrow.   Blessings, Pastor Vicki

New Hope Daily SOAP - Daily Devotional Bible Reading

June 27, 2024, Day 5 Week 13 Scripture: Joshua 9-13, Luke 16 Hi! Welcome to the Daily Dose of Hope, the devotional and podcast that complements New Hope Church's Bible reading plan. The scriptures for today are Joshua 9-13 and Luke 16; however, we are going to do something a little different than we have done the last two days and instead of going verse by verse I wanted to dive into the why behind everything because I feel like that has been missing these past two days. So, I deeply encourage you to read and study these texts for yourself and listen to this podcast as sort of and accompaniment to the text. So, before I begin in honesty, we don't exactly know why God chose to do what he did in the Old Testament and specifically in what we are reading, which is Joshua meaning the way things were done. Like the question why it had to be done this way may have crossed your minds, but what we do have is a lot of information given to us and that information has much meaning in it, it holds a lot of weight. I'll give some examples of all of this too. Some questions you may be wondering at this point is… Why did God choose Joshua out of everyone else to lead? Why did God destroy the other kingdoms? Why did God allow conflict and war to happen so much in the Bible? I mean Joshua 9-13 is literally conflict and war. It's difficult to read in the sense that God is backing Joshua and the Israelites through this, and it makes you wonder. Like what about all the other people. And the Bible is so specific, but what about innocent people. I think our answer lies in the overall picture of the Bible meaning we can't just focus on this reading we have to remember what we've read before and keep in mind this passage for what we read in the future. It's like this for innocent people question take Rahab that we read about two days ago. She was spared and her family because of her faith. This leads me to believe that God takes care of His people especially the innocent. As we continue to read the Bible through this plan we will learn by the end of this year that the Bible has such an emphasis also on the oppressed and/ or helping the oppressed that it would be strange for God to turn His back on such people. So, looking at these passages where no one was spared is very horrific but maybe there for more literary affect than to be taken literally. And we see this all over the Bible right that we can't take everything super literally with the Bible there has to be some literary components that the authors are trying to use and that's what makes it so confusing and almost like deciphering a puzzle at times. But when you look at the overall narrative or big picture of Bible it makes sense as to why all this is happening. There's a flow to it. In Joshua or the Old Testament in general Gods trying to create harmony and a relationship with his people again by giving them this promised land they will settle into it and hopefully or God hopes they will stay faithful to Him.  But humankind has been failing miserably and God has continually had to reconcile with his people. This is what is happening in the Bible up until Joshua. This failure happens over and over again and is paving the way for Jesus to enter the scenario. It is why Jesus came to save us.  Which we will turn our attention now to the New Testament. I also want to say that Jesus doesn't follow the typical culture mindsets most of the time. What's interesting is that Jesus has a different attitude than what is expressed in the Old Testament a more peaceful attitude. He strives for unity and peace amongst His brothers and sisters in Christ and outside of Christ. It's a shift from defense literally like having a defense system like an army in the Old Testament to an inviting and welcoming attitude towards others. Of course, they were different time periods in the Old and New Testament, but I think the gradual progression from this conflict we see in Joshua throughout the Bible to the peaceful parables we see in Luke 16 makes a difference. I mean it was God himself incarnate that changed everything. Because of Him we no longer are slaves to our sin. So, what does this mean for those questions I posed above and all the questions in our hearts. I do not know the answers to those questions. Sorry. But first, I want you to tell yourself that its ok to question God. Most of the time we beat ourselves up for that, God knows it's hard being down here unable to see him physically. And secondly, we can trust God. This is what it boils down to TRUST. We must trust God or else our relationship with God will not work. If you're married, dating, or have ever been in any kind of relationship even not romantic you know you have got to trust that other person. It's the same with God. God has given us the resources the Bible, The Church, a community of brothers and sisters in Christ and all we have to do is keep learning, keep reading, keep attending, and keep showing up because through that we will ultimately get the peace to sit with the unanswered questions. Trust God, have a blessed day, and see you again on the daily dose of hope. The Daily Dose of Hope is a devotional intended to provide context and reflection to the New Hope Church Bible Reading Plan.  It's our goal  to read the Bible in a year together as a family of faith.  Five days a week we read.  Two days a week we either rest or catch up.  Reading the Bible is the number one way to grow in our walk with Jesus.  We have to know God's Word to live God's Word.  Now for our Daily Dose of Hope… https://www.findnewhope.com

In the vast expanse of life's uncertainties, where each step might feel like venturing into uncharted territories, the command to be strong and courageous isn't just a mere suggestion; it's a vital lifeline. This call to action resonates through the ages, as potent today as it was when first spoken to Joshua. It's an assurance that in the midst of our fears and doubts, there is a source of strength that is unfailing. Today, we delve into the heart of what it means to stand firm in our trust in God, especially when He speaks to us through His promises.Scripture: Joshua 1:9 - "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go."At the threshold of the Promised Land, faced with daunting challenges and formidable enemies, Joshua was given a command that would become the bedrock of his leadership: to be strong and courageous. This wasn't mere human bravado; it was a strength and courage rooted in the promise of God's unfailing presence. Trusting God when He speaks to us means embracing this same command, understanding that His presence is a guarantee of our victory, regardless of the giants we face.Focus Points (2 minutes):* Divine Strength: Highlight the distinction between human strength and the strength that comes from God. It's a strength that doesn't wane when faced with adversity but grows stronger in the face of it.* Courage in Action: Discuss what it means to be courageous in our daily lives. It's not the absence of fear but the decision to move forward in faith, trusting that God's promises are sure.* The Presence That Promises Victory: Delve into the significance of God's promise to be with us. This assurance is not just about comfort; it's about empowering us to face anything, knowing we are never alone. Conclusion:The command to be strong and courageous is more than an ancient decree; it's a present-day proclamation over our lives. Trusting God when He speaks involves taking Him at His word, believing in His promises, and moving forward with a courage that defies our circumstances. It's a trust that transforms fear into fortitude, doubt into determination.Call to Action:Identify a situation in your life where fear or discouragement has been holding you back. Commit this situation to God in prayer, asking for the strength and courage to move forward. Take one step of faith this week, no matter how small, as a tangible act of trust in God's promise to be with you.Question of the Day: What does being “strong and courageous” look like in your current circumstances, and how can you actively trust God's promise to be with you?Let's Pray:Lord, we come before You acknowledging our need for Your strength and courage. In the face of our fears and challenges, remind us of Your command to be strong and not afraid. Fill us with the courage that comes from knowing You are with us, that Your presence is our assurance of victory. Help us to trust You more, to lean on Your promises, and to step forward in faith, knowing that You are by our side every step of the way. Amen.As we face the unknowns of our journey, let's cling to the command to be strong and courageous, not as a burden we carry alone but as a promise we walk in together with God. He is with us, in every challenge, every fear, every step. Trust in His word, lean into His presence, and let His courage be your strength. Together, let's move forward, emboldened by the promise of His unfailing presence, for there is no ground we walk that He has not already claimed in victory. My Reasons To Believe is a reader-supported publication. In the tumultuous battlefield of life, where the clamor of worldly influences threatens to breach the walls of our homes, how do we stand firm in our resolve to protect our loved ones? In this episode of The Power Of God's Whisper, we delve into the heart of spiritual defense, anchoring our discussion in the timeless declaration made by Joshua. As we navigate through the fog of cultural and spiritual warfare, we're reminded that the foundation of our family's safety lies not in physical might but in the unwavering decision to serve the Lord.Scripture: Joshua 24:15 - "But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord."Joshua's bold proclamation offers more than a glimpse into his heart; it provides a blueprint for safeguarding our families against the onslaught of spiritual decay. In a world where the lines between right and wrong are increasingly blurred, Joshua's choice rings out as a clarion call to spiritual warriors today. It's a declaration of allegiance, a commitment to uphold God's statutes within our homes, and a refusal to succumb to the seductive idols of our time.Focus Training (2 minutes):* Declaration of Service: Spend a moment reflecting on the gods of our era—the allure of materialism, the worship of convenience, the idolatry of technology. Contemplate the impact these have on your spiritual life and that of your family. Now, envision your home as a fortress of faith, where the Lord's presence is palpable in every decision, conversation, and action. Commit to making Joshua's declaration your own.* Creating a Spiritual Defense Plan: For the next two minutes, think about practical ways to implement this declaration in your daily life. How can you foster an environment where serving the Lord is not only a choice but a joy? Consider establishing routines such as family devotions, scripture reading, or prayer times that invite God's presence into your home. Conclusion:Joshua's decision to serve the Lord was not a passive statement but an active strategy for spiritual protection. Similarly, our commitment to guard our families in a world hostile to faith requires more than words; it demands action. By choosing to serve the Lord, we erect an impenetrable shield around our loved ones, ensuring that our homes remain sanctuaries of God's grace and truth.Call to Action:This week, take a tangible step towards reinforcing your household's spiritual defenses. Whether it's initiating a new family tradition centered around faith or simply gathering your loved ones to affirm your collective commitment to serve the Lord, let Joshua's resolve inspire your actions.Question of the Day:What modern-day "gods" are challenging your family's commitment to serve the Lord, and what steps can you take to combat them?Prayer: Let's Pray:Heavenly Father, in a world filled with distractions and deceptions, help us to choose You every day. Grant us the wisdom and strength to lead our families in Your ways, resisting the idols of our time. May our homes be beacons of Your love and truth, and may our commitment to serve You protect us from the snares of the enemy. In Jesus' name, Amen.As we conclude today's journey, remember, the greatest legacy we can leave our families is not found in worldly wealth or accolades but in a heritage of faith. By choosing to serve the Lord, we ensure that our homes stand as strongholds of light in a darkened world. Until next time, keep your shield up and your eyes on the Lord.My Reasons To Believe is a reader-supported publication. Timothy Keller Sermons Podcast by Gospel in Life

Many of you have probably heard of the battle of Jericho. But you probably didn't know about what happens in these first three verses. These verses make all the difference. Jericho was a huge city, a fortified city, and humanly speaking, an impossible city for the Israelites to handle. It's important to remember that this is not the first time Joshua has been to Jericho. In this passage, Joshua goes out all by himself and looks at it. He's remembering something that happened 40 years before. When he gets out there, he has this amazing encounter with God. There are three lessons we draw from this passage: 1) this is Jesus, 2) Jesus is absolutely holy, and 3) Jesus had a drawn sword. This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on September 22, 1996. Series: Daring to Draw Near. Scripture: Joshua 5:13-15, 6:1-5. Today's podcast is brought to you by Gospel in Life, the site for all sermons, books, study guides and resources from Timothy Keller and Redeemer Presbyterian Church.
