I need to say a big thank you to Jodi Hays for introducing me to Charles Clary when she put us on a panel a few years back at SECAC in Chattanooga. His work and work ethic is mind-boggling and I am so grateful he was open to having a conversation even though we only met once before. I'm already looking forward to our next chat! You can find out more about his work at charlesclary.com or @charlesclary on Instagram
Rachel and I have been friends since 1995. She has one of my favorite stories about being a young artist and has always been really fun to talk about art with. Nothing has changed except she is now a professor and lives in Washington state. She still makes incredible drawings and is still fun to have a conversation with! I hope you will dive into her drawing practice. It is fantastic!
I met JayVe when we both presented slide shows at Nashville artists drink beer. Thanks to Bradley Marshall for the invite because JayVe's work has been on my mind ever since. It was so great to get to talk with him more about current and future investigations. Follow him on Instagram @abstractblack or go buy his music from his website www.jayvemontgomery.com It is as fantastic as he is!
For many of us in the Nashville art ecosystem, Stephanie is a foundational figure. In this conversation, she and I talk about having tough days, approaching shifts in our lives with curiosity instead of shame, parenting as a creative practice, and a whole lot more.
Dr.Jeremy Blair is amazing! He is teaching, collaborating with, and mentoring a new generation of Art Educators in this world. That in and of itself is a monumental task. He also maintains a rigorous studio practice. He is also madly in love with his wife. Dive into his work through his website www.blairarted.com or follow him on Instagram @jeremyblairart
This conversation is good from the get-go and doesn't let up. We cover a lot of ground! Cybelle is a creative force and I feel lucky to have her in our ecosystem. I can't get over the fact that she writes a song a day! Check her work out on her website www.cybelleelena.com or follow her on Instagram @cybelle_elena
I met Ted through my friend Rick Saunder's in 2012. I was writing an article about Rick for the Folio Weekly Guardian of the Blues Ted couldn't have been more generous with his time and expertise. I built him a lobster pot diddley-bow to say thanks and we've built a friendship over the past 9 years that I'm truly grateful for. Take a listen and you'll see why. Dive into Ted's music at CoyoteMotel.com and as he says in our chat drop him a line!
It's been way too long since Dhanraj and I have talked. If it seems like I'm really happy to be reconnecting it's because I'm really happy to be reconnecting! He makes amazing work and took photos for the upcoming Myron Mixon Keto BBQ cookbook among other incredible food projects. Dive into his work at www.dhanrajemanuel.com or @dhanrajemanuel on Instagram

Donna and I talk about us both going to the same college with our older siblings, why she's a better painter now, and both of our hopes that Elliot Perry starts collecting her work and a whole lot more in the first of what I hope is a bunch of recorded conversations with her. Donna's positive attitude is absolutely infectious and we are all lucky that she is making the work she is making in our collective art ecosystem. Dive in on her website www.Donnawoodley.com or follow her on Instagram @donnawoodleyart
Randy and I had a blast talking about whether or not his paintings are paintings if he is good or bad at the business of being an artist, his role on the board of Turnip Green Creative Reuse and Number Inc., and the fact that this episode was NOT sponsored by Jerry's Artarama, Plaza Art Supply, Thirdman Records, or the Art Fight Podcast. We had some technical difficulty and had to record two separate zoom sessions and lost all track of time on another snowy day in Nashville so it's an extra-long episode! Check out Randy on all platforms @randylpurcell on his website www.randylpurcell.com or on his youtube channel Randy Purcell Youtube
Such a good talk with Joe Christy. Our conversation ranged from pandemic studio practice to the band Body Horse that includes his brother Matt, brothers David and Benji Anderson, and Eve Meret, and lots of topics in between. Follow him @josephbchristy @bearcdigital or @sottoys
Rae and I had so much to say we just couldn't keep it under an hour. Can't wait for those that don't know her work yet to dive into her website and Instagram feed. https://eliraewilson.com/ or @eliraewilson
"Mahwish Chishty combines new media and conceptual work with materials and techniques of South Asian art and craft traditions." from www.mahachishty.com I met Mahwish in 2015/16 when she and my 200 students from Maplewood High School put on an exhibit at the Red Arrow Gallery in East Nashville. https://nashvillearts.com/2016/03/maplewood-high-school-students-change-perceptions-through-art/ https://www.tennessean.com/story/life/arts/2016/02/07/maplewood-students-pakistani-artist-deliberate-drones/79660082/ She has exhibited her work around the world and is currently planning a project that will show in Chicago, India, and Pakistan. In addition to her website, this episode of Drone Futures about her and her work is fantastic. https://lnns.co/s6pTi3SOVC1 Drone Futures is hosted by Michael Richardson, Senior Research Fellow at the University of New South Wales, whose research examines the intersection of war, culture, and technology. Feel free to follow Drawing South and share with and beyond your own art ecosystem.
Hamlett Dobbins is a painter, professor, poetry lover, and one of the nicest people you will ever meet. He lives in Memphis,TN, shows at both David Lusk Gallery locations and was a 2013 American Scholar in Rome. We had a nice chat that we hope you will listen to.
Sisavanh and I talk about cooking, family, grad school and being seen as older artists. I won't ruin the two quotes from her late mother but they are worth the listen.
Jodi and I talk about everything from painting in the expanded field to me picking tomatoes from my grandfather's field. If you love her work, her big heart and razor sharp intellect you might enjoy this meandering conversation we had from our respective studios.
Don't take my word for it, take Marlos'. This is the definitive Marlos E'van interview! We talk about it all!
