Henry VII rebuilt England with a ledger instead of a sword. The myth remembers him as a cautious survivor of the Wars of the Roses — a miser, a tax collector, the kind of king who was nervous about the battlefield. But that's the small version of the story. The real machine ran on parchment, bonds, wool customs, royal seals, and the rolls the sheriffs kept.Henry filled his government with "new men" — administrators he picked for their command of the law and for their loyalty. A body called the Council Learned in the Law took ordinary promises and turned them into debts you could actually enforce. Noble privilege started to become a liability. Loyalty turned into a bill with a seal on it.That was the Tudor revolution. It looked less like a new crown and more like a new collection system. The monarchy stopped waiting around for obedience and started pricing it.Everything Henry VIII did — the break with Rome, the dissolution of the monasteries — was only possible because his father had built a state powerful enough to do it. The founder of the durable political order is almost never the charismatic figure history remembers. It's the accountant.═══════════════════════════════
Margaret of Anjou was a prominent figure during England's Wars of the Roses, just before the Tudor Era. At the end of the Tudor Era, William Shakespeare wrote several plays about the Wars - and in these, we see Margaret progress from young Princess to warrior Queen to mystical witch-crone. No other character has such a dramatic portrayal across Shakespeare's plays. The new book Shakespeare's Margaret is a biography of both Margaret, the real person, and also Margaret, the character written by Shakespeare. The book's authors Charles O'Malley and Scott W. Stern join us to talk all things Margaret and Shakespeare. Welcome to another episode of When Words Fail, Music Speaks – the show where we explore how rhythm, melody, and storytelling become lifelines for those wrestling with depression, anxiety, and life's inevitable setbacks. In today's conversation, we sit down with Ben Barbic – a multi‑talented musician, entrepreneur, author, and motivational storyteller. Ben shares the journey behind his powerful memoir Rise & Climb: Finding Purpose Through Pain, a book born from eight years of raw reflection, late‑night airport scribbles, and moments of raw loss (including a family fire and the loss of a motorcycle dealership). He explains how each chapter is anchored to a song title, revealing why music has always been his refuge and why it continues to shape his healing process. From the grit of Guns N' Roses' “It's So Easy” that captured his teenage anguish, to the uplifting vibes of reggae that turned his darkness into joy, Ben walks us through his evolving soundscape – from early rock‑and‑roll roots, through hip‑hop beats, to today's acoustic‑driven soundtrack that will accompany the audiobook release of Rise & Climb this October. We also dive into:The hardest chapter to write – reliving childhood loss and the fire that led him to his first Casio keyboard. How writing became therapeutic, loosening pain's grip and turning trauma into a catalyst for growth. The philosophy that every bout of suffering carries a core lesson, and how channeling that “fuel” can spark purpose.A lightning‑round of rapid‑fire questions – from his first album (A‑C‑D‑C), to his go‑to workout track (Wu‑Tang), to his ultimate dinner guest (Frank Sinatra). What keeps Ben smiling these days: genuine, distraction‑free conversations that remind us why connection matters.Whether you're a creator seeking inspiration, someone navigating the fog of mental health challenges, or simply a music lover curious about the stories behind the songs, this episode offers a heartfelt reminder: pain is not just an obstacle; it can be the very material we forge into purpose. Stay tuned, press play, and let the conversation heal you as much as it inspires.Website:https://www.risenclimb.com

As Spain and Argentina meet in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, Labor History Today looks beyond the action on the pitch to explore soccer's deep roots in working-class communities and labor struggles. British labor journalist and trade unionist Simon Sapper traces the history of "the people's game," from its origins in factory towns and mining communities to today's battles over billionaire ownership, rising ticket prices, and the commercialization of the world's most popular sport. Then we revisit one of the most important—and least remembered—labor struggles of the Progressive Era. While the 1912 "Bread and Roses" strike in Lawrence, Massachusetts is well known, a similar uprising unfolded just months later in Little Falls, New York. In an interview from our friends at the Green and Red Podcast, historian James Cheney, author of Women, Immigrants, and the Working-Class Battle in Little Falls, New York, 1912–1913, tells the story of the immigrant women textile workers who launched a spontaneous strike that drew support from the Industrial Workers of the World and became a landmark in labor history. Finally, on Labor History in 2:00, we remember the 1969 Charleston Hospital Workers Strike, when more than 400 Black hospital workers walked off the job, forging a powerful alliance between the labor and civil rights movements in the fight for dignity, equality, and union rights. Questions, comments, or suggestions are welcome, and to find out how you can be a part of Labor History Today, email us at LaborHistoryToday@gmail.com Labor History Today is produced by the Labor Heritage Foundation and the Kalmanovitz Initiative for Labor and the Working Poor. #LaborRadioPod #History #WorkingClass #ClassStruggle @GeorgetownKILWP #LaborHistory @UMDMLA @ILLaborHistory @AFLCIO @StrikeHistory #LaborHistory @wrkclasshistory

The Tudors are the most famous royal family in English history (or at least, the most notorious). Where did they come from? The surname came from Wales; their claim to the throne came partly from France, and it was, frankly, a little dodgy, which is why later Tudor Kings didn't want you to think about their claim to the throne too hard! This week, we look at the women responsible for bringing the Tudor name to the throne: Catherine of Valois and Margaret Beaufort. McShane, Fitz, and Jefe return after taking a week off for America's 250th. They recap a calm holiday weekend and pivot to major topics: NYC Mayor Mamdani's immigrant-enclave map omits Little Italy, Irish/Scottish areas, and Jewish enclaves, which they argue signals erasing history and fuels backlash. They discuss rumors that Mitch McConnell “died,” skepticism toward claims he's fine, and note Elaine Chao's China meetings as suspicious. They call out heavy CERN discourse as a narrative, rejecting recent “Mandela effect” claims while acknowledging anxiety about time and distraction. They review beers (Stoup Mothership IPA, Roses by the Stairs smoked porter critique, Mortalis coffee stout praised, Fremont Orange and Cacao barrel-aged stout praised) and warn robots and AI-body control tech are becoming dangerously real.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/razor-wire-news--5683729/support.www.razorwirenews.com

H-index 3 (LotR Trick Taking, Trio, Got Five!) Anitra: 27 plays of 12 unique games. H-index 3 (same as Andrew) 0:16:45 The Family Gamers Community Welcome new members! #Backtalk We asked you about how you treat board games. Read the answers on Facebook or #backtalk channel of the Discord. 0:22:40 Classic Literature to Introduce via Board Games We’re going to focus on games that will whet the appetite: You don’t need to already know the stories to enjoy them, but there’s enough to make kids WANT to dig deeper. 1. Winnie the Pooh stories by A.A. Milne: Hundred Acre Wood Fluxx 2. Classic Grimm’s fairy tales: The Grimm Masquerade and 3 Chapters – both of these games make characters from different tales interact, but with specialized relationships unique to each one. 3. The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle: tons of games that riff on this character. But the best to introduce the setting and themes from Doyle’s stories include: Unmatched: Cobble & Fog Baker Street Irregulars (4-book / 4-player mystery from Van Ryder publishing) Sherlock 13 (deduction of a criminal, introduces many characters) 4. Shakespeare: be careful in how you approach this! Shakespeare is wonderful, but not great if you’re forced to read it. We recommend Unmatched: Slings & Arrows to introduce some of the fun of Shakespeare. 5. Greek mythology: Horrified: Greek Monsters Santorini Iliad (Unmatched has Medusa in BoL1, Achilles & Patroclus in BoL2) One more shout out for the Unmatched series. They pull from tons of classics: Alice in Wonderland, Beowulf, Robin Hood, Sinbad, and even modern “classics” like Jurassic Park, Marvel characters, The Witcher, Buffy, and TMNT. (Other games based on classic literature that are great, but work much better if you already love the story: Ichor, Bottle Imp, Paint the Roses, Princess and the Goblin, The Grimm Forest) 0:46:10 New Backtalk Question What’s your hidden gem? Eric Buterbaugh has the best stories of anyone I know. This week on Everything Is The Best, we sit down with the man they call the King of Roses, LA's florist to the stars turned founder of EB Florals, and honestly I could have listened to him for five more hours. He's worked for Gianni Versace, he's done the flowers for Madonna's Oscar parties and Demi Moore's dinners, and at one point in this conversation he tells the story of eating fried chicken on the floor with Elizabeth Taylor, which is exactly the kind of unhinged glamour I live for. We get into what it actually takes to build a life around beauty, the emotional labor of working the most intimate days in people's lives (he's basically a therapist with shears), and how decades of floral obsession turned into a perfume line that made Saks and Bergdorf Goodman pay attention.Eric is fucking fabulous. Funny, unfiltered, zero interest in being precious about any of it. I love him, and I think you will too.Produced by Dear Media. Along the way they analyze Sean's Viall Files appearances, break down the economics of Love Island USA fame, discuss bombshell strategy, reality TV performance, influencer careers, and what these interviews reveal about the modern reality television ecosystem.Subscribe to Game of Roses on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/gameofrosesPatreon: https://patreon.com/gameofrosesMerch: https://gameofroses.orgListen on Apple Podcasts: http://bit.ly/gameofrosesListen on Spotify: http://bit.ly/spotifygameofroses Hosted on Acast.
