This week our guest is Jason Porrath, who has an amazing podcast called '50 First Gigs' where he chronicles the beginnings of Guns n Roses! 2:16 - Who is Mark Canter? Mark was the “Angel Investor” for Guns n Roses, aka the first roadie, the first investor, the first photographer, and in a way the first fan. Without Mark Canter, there wouldn't be a Guns n Roses. The way he first connected with Slash is a classic gnr story. 11:30 - Mark Canter took a ton of pictures and video of Guns n Roses, and they have sat in storage until very recently. Because of the 50 First Gigs Podcast and Reckless Road book, they are finally being seen by the fans. Mark trusted Jason with this process of bringing this valuable content to the public. 22:05 - We discuss the beginnings of the book and how it evolved into the project that exists today. 31:30 - Why was Los Angeles the epicenter of music in the 1980's? It seems that punk, classic rock, hair metal, new wave, hip hop, rap, and several other genres were centered on the Sunset Strip and other parts of Los Angeles. Why was this happening, and why specifically in Los Angeles? What role did KROQ play in all of this? 39:55 - A discussion about Axel Rose and his road to releasing Chinese Democracy with his newly formed ‘Guns n Roses' band. We talk about the changes the band went through, especially regarding Axel Rose and Slash. 47:45 - Guns n Roses still has a grip on fans today, old and new, and we discuss why that might be. There are fans in their teenage years as well as lifelong fans, and very few bands still have that influence. 50:00 - The book originally released was an ‘enhanced book,' which was part of the reason the book was able to get published in the first place. With today's prevalence of Podcasts, we are given the opportunity to have a new era of learning the bands history. 56:30 - Jason's original vision was to have a Netflix style documentary, however it was going to be impossible to get the music rights for it. We discuss the production and story that Jason wants to tell with the series. 1:17:00 - How did it all come together to tell this story of Guns n Roses origins? As of now, the podcast isn't making any money, so it was a matter of finding fans to come together and volunteer to build it. This also helped because Jason was able to make sure the content they were creating was content that the fans wanted. Jason tells the story of how this all came together, what content he had to build from, and where it all came from. 1:24:30 - Scott asks if the 2005 interviews from Guns n Roses still exist. We learn about them, and what their role will be in the 50 First Gigs Podcast. 1:27:00 - Right now, the podcast is only available on Patreon. The reason for that is because it needs to be funded by the fans. It's not about making money, it's about funding the project in the first place. 1:30:00 - What is compelling you to create this history of Guns n Roses? Why is it so important to provide this information for the fans?
Welcome to this week's Modern Drummer Podcast with Billy Amendola and his guest Josh Freese. If you're not familiar with his enormous body of work, please look up his discography, and it'll make your head spin. Since a very young age, Josh has been a touring musician, a first-call studio musician, a singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist, and a band member as both a leader and hired gun. He recently finished up touring and doing dates with Devo and The Offspring, in between playing on hit albums and songs, and he's getting ready as we speak to head out back on the road with Sting. He is a member of the Vandals (since 1989) and Devo (since 1996), he played drums for Guns N' Roses from 1997 to 2000, A Perfect Circle from 1999 to 2012, Nine Inch Nails from 2005 to 2008, Weezer from 2009 to 2011, and recorded over 400 records. In December 2010, Freese toured with Paramore on their South American tour. In fall 2016, he returned to playing full-time with Sting, whom he toured and recorded within 2005. In 2021, he toured with The Offspring. It's mind-boggling. Let's listen in and discover or be reminded why Josh is one of the greats. Enjoy!

Welcome to episode 92 of Activist #MMT. Today's part two of my two-part conversation with Fadhel Kaboub about his personal story. Fadhel is an economics professor at Denison University in Granville, Ohio, and the president of the Global Institute for Sustainable Prosperity, an interdisciplinary public policy think tank. The focus of his academic work is how the lens of MMT can inform developing nations. I've written a post filled with links to Fadhel's papers, posts, and appearances, a link to which you can find in the show notes. In part one, we discussed Fadhel's personal story, from childhood through parenthood. Today in part two, Fadhel finishes his story about being parent of three little boys and how music is part of how he raises them. We then turn to his own eclectic taste in music, ranging from Metallica and Guns N' Roses to Tunisian hip-hop. We especially focus on Bob Marley. In the second half of today's episode, we return to academic topics, primarily discussing how Fadhel's work on developing nations relates to the work of John Harvey on exchange rate determination. We end on the topic of the 2011 Tunisian uprising, as discussed in the recent New York Times article in which Fadhel is extensively quoted. Now, let's get right back to my conversation with Fadhel Kaboub.

It's been a crazy several months here at Curzio Research. (If you haven't heard, our will soon be trading here in the U.S. on the tZERO platform.) My wife and I decided to get away for the weekend... I share some wild stats on how Native American casinos are regulated... and what makes them different from other casinos. [18:00] A listener gives me a pat on the back for my COVID coverage and shares his experience with the virus. I share some data on why some folks are willing to get the vaccine... while others are still reluctant. Plus, I reiterate why it should be a personal choice to make. [27:10] Carbon Streaming Corporation just announced a reverse stock split. I'm an investor in this company, and a listener wants to know if I'm concerned. In short, no. Tired of beating the curmudgeon drum, Jon and Kurt decide to focus on some of their favorite things. There are no pet peeves in this episode, no discussion of the problems in society these days, and no conversations about things they can live without. Instead, this is an unabashed traipse through fields sprouting with their favorite stuff.

Eve and Paul have been dating for three years and have been long-distanced for the past year and a half. Paul is originally from the DMV, but move to the New England area to go back to school. However, Eve knows that Pauls' current job wouldn't do anything with more schooling. She also hasn't seen him even during breaks in school. Paul is also usually hard to reach for three hours a day, which he claims is because of school and when he does talk to Eve it sounds like he's trying to keep quiet. We call Paul pretending to send him a free bouquet of flowers and when we ask him as to who he wants the flowers sent to, Paul asks if he can send them to someone named Molly who Paul says is his girlfriend of a couple months! Find out what‘s really going on in today's all NEW War of the Roses!
Today I'm joined by the brainy and delightful bestselling sci-fi/fantasy author Lindsey Sparks, who got me to read a book that approximately one million people have recommended to me. Lindsey calls “A Discovery of Witches” a grown-up Twilight meets the Da Vinci Code, which I think is spot on. She also blew my mind when she explained how a good sci-fi or fantasy novel will stand on its own when all fantastical elements are pulled out of it, which in turn made me rethink what I have liked about the few books in those genres I've read. One warning: we delve into the topic of miscarriage in this episode, and how it can be a trigger for many readers, and how hard it is to avoid. I've moved this part of our conversation to the end of the podcast, so if this is a topic you aren't up to, you may want to tap out at about the 20 minute mark. You'll still get the book chat, but you can skip over the part you are sensitive to. This week's episode of Married at First Sight highlights the couple's one month anniversaries. Sarah's not sure if Ryan's scavenger hunt with a gift-card ending is the romantic gesture the couple needs, but hey, it's better than watching them eat. Mary doesn't hold back her distaste of Johnny's immature antics (mimicking fellatio on an electric toothbrush? GROW UP!) and feels for Bao's awkward attempts at communicating her need for physical intimacy. The co-hosts have an unexpected change of heart towards Myrla and note that Michaela abruptly quitting salsa dancing isn't doing her any favors with Zack (or them)—lots of snark and laughs.
