On the Gr8 Expectations podcast, you'll hear from actual 8th grade students as they discuss their independent reading from the week. Our learning target says “I can think creatively, critically, and reflectively to explore ideas within, between, and beyond texts.”
Thank you so much for joining us today. I’m your host, Mr. Cavey, and you’re listening to the Gr8 Expectations podcast, featuring real conversations with real 8th graders. TODAY’S TOPIC You’re about to hear students read writing pieces from the first week of April 2020. Students were asked to address the question of “What’s Up in Your World?” from their first week of remote learning. At the time they reflected on this question, it had already been over three weeks since the last day of classes, and we were one week removed from our two-week spring break. You’ll hear some students reflecting back on their spring break experiences, while other students talk about the quarantine life at home. OUR LEARNING TARGET
Last week in our circle check-in we responded to this statement: "Share about one recent failure you’ve had in school or in your personal life + what you learned from it." We got some interesting responses. We hope you'll learn from our failure experiences!
This week in our circle check-in we answered the question "What is one book that you have read that you enjoyed? Why did you enjoy it?" We got some interesting responses. Perhaps you'll even be inspired to do some new reading!
This week in our circle check-in we answered the question "What is one thing that someone in this group has done to support your learning?" We got some interesting responses. Shout out to all of our classmates who help us learn!
We add a few more entries to our Gratitude Journal each week. This morning, I asked students to share a few samples from students.
8C students were challenged to think of something that they learned or created over the Christmas holidays. Here were their responses.
This episode was recorded in a circle check-in. Students passed my phone around the circle and recorded their responses to this question: "What is one thing that you would like to try to LEARN or CREATE over the Christmas holiday?" Today we discussed the following quote from chapter 8 in The Outsiders: “To have somebody lay down the law, set the limits, give him something solid to stand on. That's what we all want, really.” - Randy Learning Target: I can ... exchange ideas and viewpoints to build shared understanding and extend thinking.

In this episode of the podcast, you'll hear four 8th grade students explain why they prefer the traditional models of assessment (featuring letter grades and percentages) over the newer forms of standards-based grading (featuring proficiency scales on report cards, for example). Although I don't agree with everything these students articulate, they do a wonderful job of explaining their points of view.
