I still remember the first scene I ever saw in a horror film. I must've been around 5 years old and my parents were watching The Thing. Not the original, but the John Carpenter remake from 1982. They did not allow me to watch this movie, but little did they know that I was sneaking out of my room and trying to peer around the corner of a wall so I could see a portion of the television screen. My 5 year old could not handle it. I eventually saw the whole movie when I was older. It has one of the best taglines I've ever seen. A tagline is the caption that goes near the title on the poster of the movie and you see it in the cinema. It peeks your interest and raises your curiosity. The tagline for The Thing: Man is the warmest place to hide. Similar to movie taglines, the hooks we use when pitching to media outlets can help our pitches stand out or blend in. In this episode, we're going to talk about how to write your hooks for pitching to media outlets that stand out so you can get published. “What are the questions you get asked the most?” IN THIS EPISODE What you're really pitching when you pitch media outlets. How to know what content and topics to pitch. Standing out. What a hook is and how to make an attention-grabbing one. Turning your ideas into things that create interest. What you need to understand about writing hooks. This week, Scott and Karl tackle a massive narrative of one of the world's greatest civilizations. Edward Gibbon's The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire follows the Roman Empire over thirteen centuries - its rulers, wars and society, and, of course, the events that led to its collapse. Published between 1776 and 1788 in six volumes, Gibbon gained himself the reputation of being the first modern historian of ancient Rome. But does he belong on the Great Books list? Scott says, "If you are putting together this list, there are things that have happened that you must have books about. The fall of Rome, there needs to be something that covers it. What would it be? I guess this." Gibbon, who devoted most of his life to this project, scored immediate success that was resounding. Speaking about Gibbon's influence, Karl says, "This is a sellout book informing educated Europeans about ideas of empire." Scott adds, "I think modern people carry ideas about the Romans that came from Gibbon even if they haven't read this book. He's very influential." Tune in for Part One of the duo's conversation. Brought to you by onlinegreatbooks.com.

In this episode, I sit down with my good friend Dave Dowling to discuss the top five mistakes that people tend to make with perennial cut flower plants. Whether you're a home gardener or a commercial cut-flower grower, Dave offers tips for avoiding these common perennial planting mistakes: 1. Not having weed management practices in place. You can't use chemical treatments on perennial beds, you'll need physical methods of weed prevention that match the growth habit of the plant (clump-forming vs. spreading). 2. Planting a perennial in the wrong place. Pay attention to the particular sun and water needs of each plant and place them in an environment where they'll thrive. Recognize that there are some perennials that you will not be able to grow on your property due to environmental conditions. 3. Planting the wrong variety. Did you know that there are different varieties of perennials produced specifically for cut flowers? Make sure you're purchasing the correct varieties that grow tall for cut flower production, not the dwarf varieties that are grown as bedding plants. 4. Not having a watering plan for your perennials. While most perennials, once established, may survive a drier season, they probably won't thrive and may not flower at all. Perennials need regular irrigation to achieve maximum flower production. 5. Assuming that perennials are less work than growing annuals. Perennials have their own maintenance requirements, including weeding, watering, and fall cleanup. Some perennials need to be dug up and divided every few years. Some are short-lived and need to be replanted every few years. *PRO TIP* For a decent volume of cut-flower production, Dave recommends planting at least 25 plants of each variety of perennial that you want to grow. If space is limited, planting a handful of perennial varieties in larger volumes is better than planting just a few plants of more varieties, which won't yield enough of any one thing to sell. The PAC that published the Cawthorn video is now going after Boebert. Pillow Nazi Mike Lindell triggered yet another investigation when he tossed 800 grand at a politician's defense fund for voter fraud shenanigans. Rising COVID cases caused Biden to encourage Americans to don masks again. Moody Madison Cawthorn threw shade at the candidate that bested him in the primary and warned of a “dark MAGA” uprising. A judge tossed a suit brought by Mike Lindell against Smartmatic for many many reasons. A judge said no to a proposed Tennessee law requiring to businesses to post a notice if they have gender neutral bathrooms. “W” said the war in Iraq was unjust. Potential Trump Media investors legally must be warned of Trump's lengthy bankruptcy history. Republican wanker MTG blamed people using WIC for the baby formula shortage. In an extended When Animals Get Pissed segment, a massive gator invaded a Floridian's pool, we learned about the sprawling and vast spider market, and snakes have systematically attacking humans.

A stunning allegation against the world's richest man. Published reports say SpaceX paid a woman $250,000 to settle claims that Elon Musk exposed himself and propositioned her during a flight in 2016. The woman, a corporate flight attendant, reportedly took the settlement in exchange for not filing a lawsuit. But as Jim Moret reports, Musk is saying the “wild allegations” never happened. And the former Marine who spent two years in a Russian prison is speaking out in his first TV interview. And what Trevor Reed has to say is harrowing. Plus, it was a moment that wowed the nation when a man with no flying experience landing a single engine plane after his pilot blacked out. Now we know who that pilot is and what caused his medical emergency. And my husband made me do it. That's the testimony of a woman who says she was forced to dismember a coworker after she says he was shot by her husband. As Les Trent reports prosecutors say at the heart of the case is jealousy. Scott Kershaw has had an interesting route to being published. Leaving school with few qualifications, he signed up as a mature student in college. Whilst there, his work was spotted by the Head of Writing at Hull University, and despite having no A Levels or even filling in a UCAS application, he was offered a place and graduated with a First Class Degree in Creative Writing. It's all led to his debut, 'The Game'. It follows five strangers from across the globe who receive a warning that their most loved person is in danger, and the only way to save them is to play... the game. We discuss how he worked on the idea with his agent, also how he's managed to write in between renovating a house, and how music changes his writing mood.PLUS, you can hear the first full chapter of 'The Game' audiobook at the end of the show.Support us at patreon.com/writersroutine@writerspodwritersroutine.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
