The Katherine Massey Book Club @ The C.O.W.S. hosts the 3rd study session on Char Adams' Black-Owned: The Revolutionary Life of the Black Bookstore. Published in 2025, Adams' new book made a number of lists for top books of the year. Listed as an "award-winning journalist, editor, and storyteller for NBC News, known for her work on race, identity, and inequitable systems," Adams is a lovely black female, Victim of Racism. This book examines the history of people classified as black in the area of the world known as the US. Specifically, Adams investigates how black people have responded to the System of White Supremacy through the lens of bookstores owned and operated by black people. C.O.W.S. listeners should know that White Supremacists have invested immense time and energy to ensure that black people do not read or have access to books. So, black bookstores must be heavily targeted places. Last week, we learned about the demise of Drum & Spear Bookstore in Washington, D.C. and Martin Sostre's now defunct Afro Asian Book Shop in Buffalo's Eastside. This shop was located on Jefferson Avenue less than 800 feet from the future TOPS Market where 10 black people would be killed in a 2022 White Terrorist attack. Adams also details Liberation Bookstore in Harlem, Hakim's Book's in Philadelphia, and Vaughn's Book Store in Detroit. In this episode, we review the clinical presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of uncomplicated urinary tract infections. Key Concepts Uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTI) are defined as an infection localized to the bladder without any systemic signs or symptoms of infection in someone who is not immunocompromised, pregnant, catheterized, and has normal urologic anatomy. UTIs are most commonly seen in younger women. E. coli is by far the most common urinary pathogen. Symptoms alone drive most of the diagnosis of UTI; however, urinalysis and urine culture can be helpful in some circumstances. Nitrofurantoin (Macrobid) is recommended for men and women for first-line therapy in most patients. Fosfomycin, Bactrim, pivmecillinam, and certain B-lactams can be considered in certain circumstances. Women are usually treated for 3-5 days and men 5-7 days. Some evidence suggests inferior clinical outcomes for B-lactam; however, the amount of data in general is lacking for B-lactams. Recommended B-lactams (aside from pivmecillinam) include amoxicillin/clavulanate, cephalexin, cefadroxil, cefpodoxime, and cefdinir. References Nelson Z, Aslan AT, Beahm NP, et al. Welcome back to our Women's Health and Headache Medicine series. Did you know the American Headache Society recently published a position statement to encourage screening for migraine in girls and women? The position statement was based on review of the literature to establish if migraine met standards for screening in subpopulations and to assess appropriate screening tools. The team achieved consensus, agreeing that migraine, due to its prevalence, morbidity, high cost, availability of screening methods and treatments, does meet criteria to justify screening for girls and women. The panel suggested that migraine should be screened annually as part of women's preventative care with tools like ID-Migraine. ID-Migraine is a self-administered three-question survey that has been validated in primary care settings. Patients answer yes or no to having the following with headache over the past three months. Patients are asked if headaches limited your ability to work, study, or do what they need to do on at least one day. You felt nauseated or sick to your stomach. Light bothered you a lot more than when you don't have headaches. Answering at least two of the three is positive for migraine. The panel acknowledged certain barriers, but they ultimately emphasize the overwhelming benefits of screening for migraine in women and children. Although the focus is for females, they recognize benefits in boys and men as well. Check out this position statement. It's a great read. This is Tesha Monteith.
