Club soccer is loaded with buzzwords, but on the field, it still comes down to kids, coaches, and parents either helping or getting in the way. Adam sits down with Rockford Raptors executive director Frank Mateus to talk honestly about development, recruiting, mindset, and what's really happening in youth soccer right now.Episode SummaryYouth soccer has turned into long drives, club fees, showcases, tryouts, and college hopes stacked on top of regular school and life. Frank lays out how Rockford Raptors grew from a doctor buying land for his kids to a full path from three‑year‑olds in rec jerseys to ECNL and USL teams playing under the lights at Sportscore Two.The back-and-forth stays practical: what scouts actually watch, why high school soccer can still matter, and how tech, video, and constant tracking affect how kids think about their game. A big chunk of the talk is parents—sidelines, car rides, and the way one comment can either steady a kid or rattle them for a whole season. It's straight, on-the-ground detail from people who are actually in the gyms, on the fields, and at the tournaments.Key TakeawaysRockford Raptors' path: 3‑year‑olds to ECNL to USLHow Doc Wedgebury's idea became Sportscore TwoWhy big tournaments land in Rockford, not the suburbsClub vs high school soccer and where recruiting really happensVideo, highlight clips, VAR, and how kids now watch the gameTesting and metrics vs reading the game with your eyesHow physical the modern girls' and boys' game has becomeConfidence, mistakes, and what players tell themselvesCoaching the coaches so the standard keeps moving upParents, car rides, and how families can quietly cost a kid chancesEpisode Chapters00:00 Intro, Oak Performance Radio & who Frank is02:11 Doc Wedgebury, early days, and Sportscore Two04:42 Rockford's space, tournaments, and local economy07:22 How club soccer and ECNL changed the landscape11:06 Tech, film, World Cup, and kids copying the pros19:10 Fitness tests, numbers, and the mental side of data23:07 Physicality, strength work, and the girls' and boys' game28:43 Mindset, mistakes, and staying in it after a goal34:04 Coaching coaches and reviewing your own decisions37:29 Parents, college coaches, and the car‑ride problem52:00 Rockford community, facilities, and always upgrading59:47 Where to start with Raptors and Raptors Youth Soccer LeagueResources MentionedRockford Raptors – Competitive club based in Rockford, IL (boys and girls, ECNL, USL2, USLW)Raptors Youth Soccer League (RYSL) – Entry‑level and rec program for young playersSportscore Two / Wedgbury Stadium – Rockford Park District soccer complex that grew from Doc Wedgebury's original fieldsUSL2 / USLW – Pre‑pro leagues Raptors compete inECNL – League Frank points to for top youth competition and recruitingFIFA World Cup (1994 and current) – Used as markers for growth of U.S. soccerEnglish Premier League, Bundesliga, La Liga – Pro leagues kids watch and copyVAR / NFL replay – Examples around officiating and video reviewOura Ring / Whoop strap – Wearables mentioned for sleep and recovery dataAbout the GuestFrank Mateus is the Executive Director of the Rockford Raptors in Rockford, Illinois. Five deep tonight — Grant, Tim Parker, David Bloom, Mykell Mathieu and E Lamb — and the Clippers news is grim. Baxter Holmes of ESPN reports the Aspiration investigation could bleed into 2027, and Grant has had it: as he puts it, it's the year 2085, Bronny James Jr. the Second is in the league, and the investigation still isn't concluded. He torches the recycled reporting cycle — everyone re-breaking that the Raptors don't want the penalties, which the show covered three weeks ago — while E Lamb plays the adult in the room and lays out the actual endgame nobody else is explaining: findings, the Clippers' right to push back, then arbitration or court. His warning from July 4 stands — the longer this lingers, the worse it gets — and if it isn't concluded by the trade deadline, there is no trade. Mykell just feels bad for Toronto, where Kawhi was supposed to retire, and for Brandon Ingram, stuck on a team that already tried to ship him out. Before the doom: Luka Doncic is flying the ENTIRE Lakers roster to Slovenia on his own dime for a four-day August mini-camp, and the panel splits on what it means — Mykell calls it everything the last era never gave the fans, E Lamb contrasts it with a certain someone working out in another team's facility, Tim (crediting the "vanilla Lakers") says team bonding doesn't move a seed, and the crew fights over what year one of solo Luka has to look like: Western Conference Finals or bust? Plus Deebo Samuel returns to the Niners with Ricky Pearsall likely out long-term, Tim declares the Niners cooked while Grant — the self-described biggest Niners hater alive — explains why the cockroach always survives, and E Lamb announces the TST Fantasy Football League. Spring Cleaning – Toronto Maple LeafsThe Toronto Maple Leafs entered the 2025-26 season coming off a 108-point, first-place finish, but the loss of Mitch Marner, injuries, internal tension, and disappointing roster decisions sent the franchise in the opposite direction. Toronto missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2016, leading to the dismissal of General Manager Brad Treliving and serious questions about Craig Berube's future. Neil Smith and Vic Morren examine how the Maple Leafs' championship window slammed shut and why fixing the organization may take much longer than one offseason.IN THIS EPISODE:[00:00:00] The Maple Leafs are eliminated from playoff contention on April 2 after entering the season with high expectations following a 108-point campaign and a first-place finish in 2024-25.[00:00:25] The offseason trade of Mitch Marner creates an enormous offensive void. Toronto hopes Matthew Knies, Max Domi, Bobby McMann, and Nick Robertson can collectively replace Marner's production, but that offense-by-committee approach never develops.[00:00:50] Neil revisits his preseason concerns about the return for Marner and the overall construction of the roster. Even before the season began, he did not believe the Leafs were properly built for a deep playoff run.[00:01:10] Brad Treliving ultimately pays the price for the team's collapse. Neil emphasizes that Marner's value went far beyond his 100-point production because he was also one of Toronto's most dependable defensive forwards.[00:01:35] Auston Matthews' knee injury becomes another devastating setback. The Maple Leafs captain misses the final weeks of the season and faces a lengthy recovery following an injury suffered after leading the United States to Olympic gold.[00:02:00] Internal dysfunction contributes to the disappointing season. Neil points to tension between the coaching staff and management, along with widespread dissatisfaction over the direction of the team.[00:02:20] Craig Berube's coaching also comes under scrutiny. With Toronto missing the playoffs for the first time in a decade, questions immediately arise about whether he will return behind the bench.[00:02:40] The difficult relationship between Berube and William Nylander becomes one of the season's recurring storylines, with the two appearing to clash throughout much of the year.[00:03:00] Keith Pelley's role in hockey decisions is heavily criticized. Although Pelley insists he is not making the hockey decisions, Neil believes his public comments suggest otherwise.[00:03:25] Neil describes Pelley's leadership as “Buffoonery 101,” criticizing his statements about finding a data-focused general manager while simultaneously presenting opinions about the quality of Toronto's core.[00:03:50] Since taking control, Pelley has dismissed Brendan Shanahan, moved on from the Raptors' leadership, and remained highly visible as the Leafs' hockey operation deteriorated.[00:04:10] The next general manager inherits a deeply complicated situation. Toronto owns only six selections in the 2026 NHL Draft and has no picks in either of the first two rounds.[00:04:30] The Maple Leafs add an extra third-round selection through the Scott Laughton trade with Los Angeles and acquire another pick from Colorado in the Nicolas Roy deal.[00:04:50] Neil points out that the practical return from the Mitch Marner situation amounts to a fifth-round draft pick, a result he considers a major failure by the organization.[00:05:10] Toronto previously surrendered first-round picks in trades involving Laughton and Nikita Grebenkin, leaving the franchise with very little high-end draft capital returning in the other direction.[00:05:30] Many of the acquired selections do not arrive until 2027. If Colorado remains a contender, its pick will likely fall near the bottom of the round, while the picks Toronto traded away could become more valuable if the Leafs continue to struggle.[00:05:55] Neil expresses sympathy for Maple Leafs fans who have endured decades of disappointment. He believes the situation may become even more difficult before the franchise begins to recover.[00:06:15] Calle Järnkrok and Troy Stecher headline Toronto's unrestricted free agents, while Nick Robertson and Matias Maccelli are the notable restricted free agents requiring new contracts.[00:06:35] The episode concludes with a bleak assessment of Toronto's future. What once appeared to be one of the NHL's strongest championship windows now looks completely closed.[00:06:50] Neil does not simply believe the window is closing—he believes it has been slammed shut. The Maple Leafs now face a difficult organizational reset involving the front office, coaching staff, roster construction, and long-term direction.

This episode is a little bit all over the map in the best possible way. We kick things off talking about surviving the heat, house projects that cost more than we'd like to admit, and a surprisingly perfect ride on our Honda Monkeys through Mount Rainier National Park. Sometimes the best automotive experiences aren't in a 700 horsepower sports car. They're on tiny bikes puttering through some of the most scenic roads in the Pacific Northwest. We also dive into the realities of fire season, road trip planning, and why having a backup route is always a good idea. From there, the conversation wanders into the growing trend of van life and overland rigs, and whether a camper van or expedition vehicle actually makes more sense than buying a house in today's market. We compare EarthRoamers, Sprinter builds, remote work, and the appeal of having your home on wheels when mortgages seem to have lost their minds. On the car side, we talk about a missing Koenigsegg One:1 that turned into an international mystery involving leasing schemes, Interpol, and a multi-million-dollar hypercar. We also get into one of our favorite topics: helping people choose the right off-road vehicle for what they actually want to do, instead of what the internet tells them they should buy. Broncos, Jeeps, 4Runners, INEOS Grenadiers, Raptors and more all get their moment in the spotlight. Of course, there's also breaking Monkey news, questionable ideas about starting a motorcycle cult, thoughts on brand loyalty, and why small motorcycles continue to be some of the most fun you can have on two wheels. As always, we wrap up with a couple questions for listeners: Would you ever trade a traditional house for van life or an expedition rig? And what's the best motorcycle experience you've ever had? Astronomy Daily S05E148 — "Far Side" Thursday 23 July 2026 Starship gets a second shot at Flight 13 — with a schedule caveat worth knowing about. The first far-side lunar samples reveal that Earth has been quietly shielding the side of the Moon that faces us. Astronomers debate whether the lunar far side should be closed to industry. The Milky Way's only helium nova finally steps out from behind twenty-five years of dust. And the case that our entire galaxy once turned over. Plus a skywatch closer with a straightforward piece of advice about the Delta Aquariids: do not wait for the peak.In this episode Starship Flight 13 ●        Window opens 6:45pm EDT / 2245 GMT Thursday 23 July — 8:45am AEST and 10:45am NZST Friday 24 July. ●        Schedule is not locked: Starbase road and beach closure notices point to further Pad 2 testing. ●        The 16 July attempt aborted at T-0 when four of 33 Raptors missed start parameters; the limit is three. ●        Two Raptors were removed and replaced before this attempt. ●        First-ever Starship deployment of V3 Starlink satellites — 20 of them. ●        Super Heavy splashes down in the Gulf at ~7 minutes; Ship targets the Indian Ocean off Western Australia at ~65 minutes. No catch attempts. Chang'e-6 and the solar wind ●        Published in Nature Geoscience by a team at the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Institute of Geology and Geophysics. ●        Based on 1,935 grams of regolith returned from the South Pole–Aitken basin on the lunar far side. ●        First direct laboratory comparison of solar wind implantation between the near and far sides. ●        Far-side soil records faster, deeper-penetrating particles; the neon isotope ratio sits below every near-side sample measured. ●        About a quarter of the solar wind exposure at the Chang'e-5 near-side site involved wind decelerated by Earth's magnetosphere. The far-side site shows none. ●        Opens the possibility of using lunar noble gases as a fossil record of Earth's magnetic field over deep time. The far side debate — NAM 2026 ●        Held Tuesday 21 July at the RAS National Astronomy Meeting, University of Birmingham. Convened by Prof Martin Ward. ●        For the motion: Prof Joe Silk (Johns Hopkins) and Dr Jonathan McDowell (Durham Space Research Centre). ●        Against: Dr Nikita Chiu (Durham) and Dr Manuel Salvoldi (aerospace engineer and educator). ●        For: the far side is the only radio-quiet site near Earth — critical for detecting the cosmic dark ages, and an exceptional platform for gravitational wave detection. ●        Against: commercial investment is what makes lunar exploration sustainable, and governance can let science and industry coexist. ●        Audience support for the motion rose from 68% to 76% across the debate. V445 Puppis ●        Presented at NAM 2026 by John Mills, University of Warwick. ●        The only confirmed helium nova in the Milky Way. Erupted in late 2000, then vanished behind its own dust for over twenty years. ●        Now confirmed as a white dwarf accreting from a rare stripped helium star — only a few thousand such stars are thought to exist in the entire galaxy. ●        Orbital period of 3.7 days, roughly double previous estimates. Mass transfer has resumed. ●        Unexplained high-speed "bullets" of possibly oxygen-rich gas travelling up to 20 million mph (~9,000 km/s) — never seen in any other nova. ●        Data from ESO's Very Large Telescope, Hubble, the Southern African Large Telescope and TESS. ●        Helium novae may be one pathway to Type Ia supernovae, the standard candles used to measure cosmic expansion. The Milky Way disc flip ●        Presented at NAM 2026 by Kirill Batrakov, Durham University. ●        Based on 25 Milky Way-like galaxies in the Auriga simulation suite, followed across roughly 11 billion years. ●        Galaxies with the most slowly rotating stellar haloes shared a major head-on merger and a disc reorientation greater than 90 degrees. ●        Our stellar halo rotates at only 10–20 km/s; the disc moves at around 220 km/s. ●        The Gaia-Sausage-Enceladus collision roughly 10 billion years ago is the candidate trigger. ●        Batrakov describes a disc flip as likely rather than confirmed, and is looking for independent signatures. ●        Separate 2026 work led by Ling Zhu, using 600,000+ giant stars from Gaia and LAMOST, found the outer dark matter halo oriented almost vertically to the stellar disc — consistent with the disc having tilted. Skywatch ●        Southern Delta Aquariids are active now, running into late August, with maximum around 30 July. ●        Full Moon on 29 July means peak night is close to 98% illuminated — the worst conditions of the run. ●        Best window: the pre-dawn mornings from now until roughly 27 July, after moonset. ●        Radiant near Skat in Aquarius. Use Fomalhaut and the Great Square of Pegasus to locate it. ●        Australia and New Zealand: radiant climbs near overhead. Best from around 2am to first light. ●        North America: radiant sits low in the south — fewer meteors, but a better chance of long-trailed earthgrazers. Same 2am-to-dawn window, local time. ●        Sunspot region AR4493 has grown rapidly to beta-gamma-delta complexity — the highest classification — and has already fired three M-class flares in a day. Lu Dort is traded from OKC to the Atlanta Hawks in a three team deal ... the guys discuss how Dort's grit and persistence will be a great asset to the Hawks' defensive schemes.  World B wonders if this is the beginning of a new era in OKC where players are traded for financial reasons.  Ross agrees and feels this was a salary dump by the Thunder. 7:25 ... Bruce is really shocked at how soon the Hawks gave up on Zachary Risacher who was the #1 overall pick in 2024, an All Rookie first teamer in 2025, and is only 21 years old.  Ross and World B also comment on how Risacher's role was reduced in his second season. 11:52 ... LeBron James' indecision in choosing his next team is now causing Commissioner Adam Silver to level some sharp comments about how King James is holding up a lot of the decisions the league needs to make because they need to know where he will be playing.  Bruce feels LeBron is putting his ego ahead of the league and it may come back to haunt him if he pursues his ownership aspirations in the future.  World B agrees that it's an ego thing for LeBron and Ross feels he should finish his career in Cleveland. 15:57 ... The Heat officially introduced Giannis Antetokounpo last week and while they will need more outside shooting, there are some veterans out there like DeMar DeRozan and Russell Westbrook who might fit into Miami's "win now" plans in spite of them not being long range shooters.   Ross liked that Giannis is changing his number from 34 to 7 and leaving 34 behind in Milwaukee. 21:25 .... Will Jonathan Kuminga ever find a team?  The whole situation is bizarre due to his status as an "unrestricted" free agent who still needs to be in a sign and trade deal in order to find a new team since only teams under the cap can sign him without doing a sign and trade. 26:47 ... Yaxel Lendebourg led the Warriors to the Summer League championship and talked serious smack to the Grizzlies, the team the Dubs beat in the championship game.  Bruce was so inspired that he game Yaxel a nickname: "Yakkin' Yaxel."   Ross pointed out that Yaxel and Draymond Green have been talking trash to each other on Dray's podcast so the rookie is learning from the master. 30:33 ... Speaking of the Warriors, Stephen Curry has become the first active player to have a major exhibit at the Basketball Hall of Fame due to the way he revolutionized the NBA with his shooting skills.  World B and Ross feel it is well-deserved. 33:46 ... Bruce promotes the Hoop Hall Hangout session he will be hosting with Spurs legend Bruce Bowen on August 5th at the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts. 35:00 ... The guys examine the crazy contract Gary Trent Junior signed with the Bucks and how the league is investigating the Bucks for salary cap circumvention. 37:04 .... The Kawhi Leonard trade from the Clippers to the Raptors is on hold due to the NBA investigating the endorsement deal Leonard signed with Aspiration for $28 million last year.  Ross feels for the others involved in the trade because their lives and careers are being negatively impacted by the freezing of the transaction. 40:21 ... Bruce shares a story on Keaton Wagler of the Clippers and how he led the team in a bonding experience in Las Vegas where they went to an escape room and his experience in previous escape room visits helped him guide the team to a succesful escape. 41:56 ...
