The discovery that scientists working under Hitler were attempting to create a weapon utilizing the bubonic plague was a revelation for some American military leaders. As allied members stormed through Nazi strongholds and seized records and weapons, the United States' interest in weapons research sponsored by the Nazi party grew. It may have seemed obvious at that time that the Americans would need to outrace Soviet leaders to get the information first. Thus, as the end of the war wrapped up, a new mission known as Operation Paperclip began to take shape.
