During the Holocaust, Josef Mengele discarded every medical ethic to perform horrific human experiments at Auschwitz, including non-consensual vivisections, limb transplants, and agonizing surgeries conducted without anesthesia. Japan had its own program that is less known but equally brutal. In occupied China, the Imperial Japanese Army’s Unit 731 operated a vast complex where thousands were subjected to biological warfare tests and lethal physiological experiments to further military research. During the occupation of Japan after WWII, the US had an important decision to make. Should they hold those responsible for atrocities during the war accountable or should they take the information to advance the national interest? There was extremely valuable data on bioweapons and survival techniques in the face of extreme cold or low oxygen that could save the lives of thousands of soldiers. Here's what happened. The researchers who worked at Unit 731 were given immunity in exchange for their research data. Most of these scientists lived peacefully after WWII, with a few of them having to go through a 1949 Soviet Trial, which was deemed by the West as communist propaganda. They basically traded their knowledge for freedom and avoided prosecution, like the German scientists who came to America as part of Operation Paperclip.​Most of the horrors on Unit 731 had been hearsays and rumors until recently with the passing of the Freedom of Information Act. Today’s guest is Jenny Chan, and she’s published the book “Unit 731 Cover-up: The Operation Paperclip of the East.” This book is based on documents found in the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration, Russian archival documents, and translations of the Khabarovsk Trial to paint a complete picture of the cover-up of the atrocious act of Unit 731. As the authors show, garments also function as a tool of social control that shapes behavior and reinforces conformity around sexuality. The diverse lived experiences of Latter-day Saints reveal how belief and gender intersect with feelings of secrecy, shame, and obedience while creating complexities for LDS members as they navigate questions of faith, identity, and agency. In addition, the authors call for greater understanding of the people grappling with tensions between personal customs and religious expectation. The list included albums that I discovered that year and loved (whether they were new albums that were released that year or were older albums that were new discoveries for me). The list of my favorite albums that year became like a musical journal for me of what I spent that year listening to the most. The list that I made in 2007 inspired me to create lists for 1990-1999 and also 2000-2006 (to the best of my recollection). I have also made a list every year since then. I have previously counted down my 20 favorite albums from 1990-1999 (March 2024), 2000-2006 (April 2024), 2007 (Nov 2024), and 2008 (Nov 2025) - so go check those out if interested. I have featured some of these albums previously on my podcast, especially during my favorite Albums Countdown series that I did in 2021. 15 of the 20 albums on this list showed up on my Album Countdown; for comparison: my first list had 17, my second list had 13, my third list had 12, and my fourth list had 14. 3 of the 15 albums on this 2009 list were in my Top 20 of my Albums ranking, and 8 of the 15 were in my Top 100. Even though I have featured several of these albums previously on my podcast, I will not repeat any songs that have been played previously, so you will be getting fresh songs! Also, for this series, I am not going to consult any websites to talk about these albums, so no “research”. I'm just going to share what I remember about the album from that time and also maybe how I feel about it now. A quick word about my Album rankings: My original Top 250 Albums list was made at the beginning of 2021 (and counting down that list was the main reason I launched this podcast in March 2021). However, I did a complete overhaul of my rankings at the tail end of 2023. So I will mention both rankings at times. Also before we start, I want to briefly describe my process for preparing these episodes: For each album, I would listen to the songs again, narrowing them down to my three “current” favorites. Then I would listen to my three favorites again, jotting down anything that struck me.

A new investigation reported that convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein covertly rented at least six storage units across the United States from as early as 2003 up until his death in 2019, allegedly using them to stash computers, CDs, photographs, and other materials linked to his homes and his private island Little Saint James. Financial records and emails reviewed by The Telegraph indicate Epstein paid private investigators tens of thousands of dollars to move equipment from his properties into these units ahead of police raids, raising the possibility that law enforcement never searched them and that they may still contain never-before-seen evidence connected to his sex trafficking network.Some of the emails suggest private detectives copied or “cloned” data from drives before storing them, and in one instance discussed holding potentially responsive computer materials requested by attorneys for a survivor of Epstein's abuse. Other correspondence shows Epstein instructed aides to transfer items out of his Florida home when tipped off about impending warrants, and discussed the location of storage contents even while incarcerated in 2009.
