Welcome to Decode with Dev, a podcast where I do my favorite thing, wonder. I will also be reading my blog posts here and explain my perspective, maybe even check some words in the dictionary for you. Now today, I wonder if there are any drawbacks of having Satellite internet by Elon Musk's StarLink. What is the catch when you have 42,000 satellites in low orbit? Will they get in the way during stargazing? Will they increase the space junk? Will they obstruct the way when a rocket leaves for Moon or Mars? So I did the digging. Turns out, little did I know, there is internet shortage in most of the rural America. And internet is much more expensive than India. A bit ironic in my opinion. But are satellites really the answer? Isn't it maybe cheaper to spread the infrastructure on land? I also asked a star gazing expert, Ravi Bhoot, and he confirmed that the satellites would definitely occlude the view. Not only that, they know about this and are planning to colour them all black, so that we don't confuse their shine with stars or planets. Now I ask you this, do we really need satellite internet? We do have decent 4G and 5G is on its way. And broadband Wi-Fi is pretty common in 2021. Aren't we robbing our children of the beautiful view of natural night sky? And for what? To make the richest man on the planet richer? To quote Napoleon, “The world suffers a lot. Not because the violence of bad people.
