Verizon's consumer chief: Net neutrality ‘went literally nowhere'

As CEO of Verizon's consumer division, Sowmyanarayan Sampath oversees the biggest part of the company, which does business with roughly a third of the entire country. He's a longtime Verge reader, so we  talked very directly about whether the huge 5G investment had actually paid off, and whether – whether the “race” we were supposedly in with China was actually worth it, and what kinds of new apps and services actually come to light. And while Verizon fought tooth and nail against regulations like net neutrality, the current Trump administration isn't nearly as hands-off when it comes to things like  holding up deals because of DEI policies — something that's happening to Verizon right now. So I had to ask Sampath if he was going to push back on that kind of government overreach as hard as Verizon has in the past.

Offshore oil and gas operations are among the most complex and remote in the world. From harsh weather to limited physical access, these environments demand reliable, high-speed communications to enable modern digital workflows and keep operations running safely and efficiently. As offshore operations become more autonomous and data-driven, the traditional telecom models fall short. Legacy systems struggle to meet rising demands for bandwidth, low latency, and mobility—especially when platforms are unmanned or vessels are constantly on the move. Tampnet is addressing this head-on by delivering a mixed-mode communication strategy that combines subsea fiber, private 5G, and satellite (LEO) into one seamless network. Their infrastructure enables everything from robotic inspections and mobile edge compute to AI-driven automation—critical for modernizing offshore energy. In this episode, I speak with Frode Støldal, Chief Digital Officer and President of the Americas at Tampnet. We explore how a hybrid telecom model is revolutionizing offshore connectivity, driving operational efficiencies, and accelerating digital transformation. From supporting 450+ global platforms to enabling real-time decision-making at the edge, Frode shares a glimpse of the offshore future—one powered by high-speed, intelligent infrastructure.

This is Nelson John, and I'll bring you the top business and tech stories, let's get started. 1. India's $4 Billion Tech Design Ambition India is aiming to move up the electronics value chain with a proposed $4 billion Design-Linked Incentive (DLI) scheme. The goal? To go from “Make in India” to “Design in India.” The scheme will support 30 semiconductor and 30 electronics categories, including Wi-Fi chips, EV components, and smart meters. Incentives will be based on investment and turnover, with a focus on creating patents and IP. This comes as India files only 60,000 patents annually, far behind the U.S. and China, which each cross the one-million mark. As production-linked incentives for mobile phones wind down, this move could mark India's next leap in tech manufacturing and innovation. 2. Inflation Eases, RBI Shifts Focus to Growth Retail inflation in March dropped to 3.34%, the lowest since August 2019, thanks to cooling food prices. Food inflation fell sharply to 2.69% from 8.5% a year ago. This dip prompted the Reserve Bank of India to cut the repo rate to 6%, with more cuts expected in June. With 12 states reporting inflation below the national average and cereals inflation at a 33-month low, analysts expect the RBI to focus more on supporting growth. 3. Ericsson's India Sales Slip as 5G Rollout Slows Swedish telecom firm Ericsson reported its sixth straight quarterly revenue dip in India, down 28% year-on-year, as major telcos Airtel and Jio near completion of their 5G rollout. However, revenue rose 32% sequentially, thanks to new contracts from Vodafone Idea and Airtel. India remains Ericsson's second-largest market, though its share of global revenue dropped to 7% from 10%. Globally, Ericsson's sales rose 3%, and net profit jumped 63%, signaling strength outside India. The company remains confident in its long-term prospects despite the domestic cooldown. 4. IndiGo Becomes World's Most Valuable Airline In a landmark moment, IndiGo's market cap hit $23.45 billion, making it the world's most valuable airline. That's higher than Delta, American, or Lufthansa. The airline commands over 60% of India's domestic market and has proven resilient through multiple industry downturns. Massive aircraft orders placed early have given it an edge amid global supply shortages. The company's rise is also being seen as a case for privatization—IndiGo has thrived while government-owned airlines have floundered. Still, issues like falling service quality and limited competition loom. 5. Diamond Exports Hit 20-Year Low India's diamond and jewellery exports are in a deep slump. Exports of cut and polished diamonds fell 15% in FY25 to ₹1.12 trillion, the lowest in nearly two decades. Overall gems and jewellery exports dropped 10%, marking the third straight year of decline. The sector has been hit by post-pandemic demand shifts, sanctions on Russian diamond supplies, and now, slowing consumer demand in the U.S. and China. Lab-grown diamonds, which cost a fraction of natural ones, are also undercutting demand. The industry is calling for government support through tax breaks, easier credit, and promotion campaigns to revive growth.

“We're continuing to grow, while others are shrinking,” said Stan Gray, Senior Vice President of IoT Broadband and HiCat Vertical Sales at Telit Cinterion, in a recent conversation with Technology Reseller News. As Q2 begins, Gray shared how Telit Cinterion is building on its 40-year legacy to meet today's demand for intelligent, always-on, and high-bandwidth IoT solutions. Stan Gray At this year's Mobile World Congress, Telit Cinterion unveiled its fourth generation of 5G modules powered by Qualcomm's SDX82 and 85 chipsets. These new offerings combine advanced connectivity with Qualcomm's AI engine, enabling edge intelligence and prioritization—especially for video applications that demand real-time processing. “It's a critical capability when you're streaming rich video or other latency-sensitive content,” said Gray. Another game-changing release: Telit's new multi-profile eSIM. With it, devices like point-of-sale terminals can instantly switch between carrier profiles to ensure constant uptime. “It's all about mission-critical continuity,” Gray emphasized. This latest innovation continues Telit's tradition of delivering products that evolve with market needs—from GSM beginnings to full-spectrum 5G support. Today, Telit Cinterion is the Western market leader in cellular IoT modules. That leadership was bolstered by its 2022 acquisition of Thales' cellular IoT division, propelling Telit into new territories and giving customers access to comprehensive solutions spanning hardware, connectivity, and cloud. Yet growth in 5G also brings challenges. “The biggest one is education,” Gray noted. Many OEMs still sell globally without embedding connectivity, relying on customers to figure out how to connect. That often creates friction—and missed opportunities. “We want to help those OEMs become ecosystem players, not just hardware vendors,” said Gray. Another challenge is the speed of innovation. “The market is moving fast, from LTE Cat-1 to 5G REDCap. We're not just talking about what customers need now—we're helping them prepare for 2026 and beyond.” Future-proofing, Gray explained, starts with product longevity. “We work with customers to choose the right technologies that will still be supported seven to eight years down the line.” Gray's message to enterprises weighing tech investments carefully in 2024: “There's always risk, but if you work with a trusted partner that sees the road ahead, you can make smart, future-focused decisions.” Learn more: telit.com

On this week's show look at five trends that are shaping home theaters in 2025 and we look at what will drive home automation into the next decade. Pulse we read your emails and take a look at the week's news. News: Kaleidescape Introduces the New Strato M Movie Player Police shut down Minecraft movie screening after audience trashes theater SVS 5000 R|Evolution Series Subwoofer Other: When Google Assistant is phased out, what happens to our smart speakers? Here are Five Trends Shaping Home Theater Experiences in 2025: 1. Immersive Audio Systems: Dolby Atmos and DTS:X continue to dominate, with more homes adopting multi-dimensional sound setups. Ceiling speakers and soundbars with upward-firing drivers are increasingly popular, creating a cinema-like audio bubble. 2. 8K Resolution Adoption: While 4K remains standard, 8K TVs and projectors are gaining traction as prices drop and content becomes more available. Upscaling tech also enhances older media, making the jump to 8K more appealing. 3. Smart Integration: Home theaters are syncing up with smart home ecosystems—think voice-controlled lighting, motorized screens, and AI-driven content recommendations. Systems like Google Home or Alexa are seamlessly tied to AV receivers and streaming devices. 4. Modular and Compact Designs: Space-saving solutions are on the rise. All-in-one projectors with built-in streaming, or modular furniture with hidden speakers, cater to smaller living spaces without sacrificing quality.   5. Gaming-Centric Features: With next-gen consoles and PCs pushing boundaries, low-latency displays (120Hz+ refresh rates) and variable refresh rate (VRR) support are must-haves. Home theaters are doubling as gaming hubs, blending entertainment modes. Will AI Drive Home Automation into the Next Decade? One of the biggest advancements in home automation technology in recent years is the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning into smart home systems. This has taken home automation beyond simple remote control and scheduling to a level where devices can learn from user habits, adapt to preferences, and make intelligent decisions autonomously. Those who are fans of AI point to smart thermostats like the Nest or Ecobee and claim that these devices don't just follow a preset schedule anymore—they analyze your temperature preferences, daily routines, and even local weather patterns to optimize heating and cooling. Over time, they adjust themselves to save energy while keeping you comfortable, often without any manual input.  But this isn't really asking Ai to do much. Once you set a thermostat with your preferences it just needs to determine whether you are home or away and go into the appropriate mode. There is nothing revolutionary or even AI about it.  However, AI-powered hubs like Amazon's Alexa, Google Home, or Apple's HomeKit have gotten smarter with natural language processing and interoperability. They c an now coordinate multiple devices—lights, locks, cameras, appliances—through a single voice command or trigger complex routines based on contextual cues like, “I'm home” could unlock the door, turn on lights, and start the coffee maker. The latest advancements also include predictive behavior, where systems anticipate needs—like dimming lights when it's movie time or locking doors when you leave—based on historical data. What's making this possible is the combination of faster processors, cheaper sensors, and cloud computing, alongside AI models that can crunch data in real time. Add in 5G and Matter (the new universal smart home standard), and you've got faster, more reliable communication between devices, even across different brands.  But a real game-changer is edge AI—processing data locally on devices rather than in the cloud. This boosts speed, privacy, and reliability, even if your internet drops. Picture a security camera that instantly recognizes a package delivery and unlocks the door for the courier, all without checking with the cloud first. So what do you think will drive home automation in the future?

The drinks, the food, the salad bar, and the service are always top-notch! We also welcome Andy Brady, Verizon's Market President, to discuss a new commitment in Northeast Wisconsin. Verizon announced a seven-year partnership with the Packers as their official 5G mobile partner, which is already enhancing the cell service in and around Lambeau as we lead up to the draft. The other big part of this announcement... Verizon will be wiping out $3 million in veteran debt throughout the state of Wisconsin. W samym sercu Unii Europejskiej wybuchła ogromna afera korupcyjna. “We're bringing a powerful new revenue stream to MSPs—combining device sales with recurring 5G data services,” says Adam Crockett, Senior Director at D&H Distributing. Speaking with Technology Reseller News at the 2025 Channel Partners Conference, Crockett unveiled D&H's new 5G initiative, powered by Cellhub, marking a major expansion in the distributor's service capabilities and a significant opportunity for managed service providers. D&H, the third-largest broadline IT distributor in the U.S., has long been known for its dependable hardware fulfillment. But as Crockett explains, the company has steadily evolved to support its partners in new ways—offering pre- and post-deployment services, ongoing support, and now 5G connectivity. In a bold move, D&H has entered the mobile data space through a strategic partnership with Cellhub, T-Mobile's premier primary agent. This collaboration allows D&H to offer activated 5G devices bundled with data plans—an area previously off-limits to the distributor. Crockett emphasizes that this expansion is more than just another offering: it's a key to long-term, recurring revenue. “MSPs can now earn both upfront commissions and ongoing residuals through 5G service activations,” he explains. The program covers a range of connected hardware—from Dell and HP laptops with built-in 5G to enterprise routers and wireless networking gear—positioning partners to deliver secure, always-connected solutions in today's hybrid work environment. A timely PC refresh cycle and growing demand for mobile-first operations make 2025 the ideal launch window. The program also includes subsidy options through T-Mobile, potentially offsetting hardware costs and making premium devices accessible even for budget-conscious clients. “This lets our partners sell a complete solution—hardware, connectivity, and services—at a compelling price point,” says Crockett. MSPs interested in tapping into this opportunity can contact the team directly at tmo5g@dandh.com. No prior D&H relationship is required to get started. For more on the program and partnership, visit www.dandh.com and www.cellhub.com.

POTS and Shots Podcast with Jake Jacoby, TELCLOUD “We're not just replacing a phone line. We're replacing the way critical infrastructure communicates—reliably, safely, and for the long haul,” says Jake Jacoby, co-founder of TELCLOUD. In this edition of the “POTS and Shots” podcast series, Jacoby breaks down the steps to successful POTS replacement and why keeping the message simple for customers is just as critical as the technology itself. Identifying the Line and Its Purpose Not all analog lines are created equal, and Jacoby reminds us that the first step is understanding what the POTS line is actually doing. “Is it powering a fire alarm, an elevator, a fax machine?” he asks. TELCLOUD's solution is built to replace any POTS line use case, but it's essential to configure it properly for the application, especially when life safety is on the line. Solving for Signal in Tough Environments Installation challenges often boil down to one thing: connectivity. “You'd be surprised how many telco rooms are buried deep in basements,” Jacoby explains. With many legacy POTS replacement systems, poor cellular signal in these spaces can create deployment headaches. TELCLOUD's modular approach separates the cellular router from the endpoint device, allowing installers to place the router up to 250 feet away—wherever the strongest signal lives. “It's flexibility that guarantees a successful install,” says Jacoby. Keep It Simple for Customers When communicating the switch to end-users, Jacoby says the message should be clear and jargon-free: “It works. We'll handle it. And it's built for the future.” TELCLOUD's support for 5G routers ensures the solution isn't just functional today, it's viable for the next decade or more. This Week's Tequila: Casa Dragones Blanco In keeping with the “Shots” side of “POTS and Shots,” Jacoby introduced Casa Dragones, a small-batch, ultra-premium Blanco tequila. “It's crystal clear, spicy, and fresh. Don't mix it—just sip it,” Jacoby advises. Made without aging, it offers a pure expression of the agave plant and makes a perfect pairing for a discussion about modern clarity in POTS replacement solutions. Learn More TELCLOUD offers white-label, managed solutions for resellers and partners looking to modernize analog infrastructure. Learn more at www.telcloud.com or call 844-900-2270.

Buckle up! From exposing Silicon Valley's censorship to tackling the shocking realities of forced organ harvesting, this show dives deep into the topics the mainstream won't touch. We've got a  powerhouse lineup of guests who are standing up against tyranny and pushing for real change. Nicole Shanahan, Philanthropist and RFK Jr. 's running mate, shares her fight against political elites and the hidden dangers of 5G. Dr. Torsten Trey uncovers the horrifying truth about China's organ trade, and Sheriff Mark Lamb breaks down what's really happening at the border. [00:50] Silicon Valley & 5G Entrepreneur and attorney Nicole Shanahan opens up about how her child's vaccine injury led her to question mainstream narratives and align with RFK Jr. in the fight for medical freedom. She dives into the dangers of 5G and microwave radiation, raising concerns about its impact on human health. Nicole also touches on geoengineering, urging for more transparency in government operations. [24:58] Forced Organ Harvesting in China Dr. Torsten Trey, founder of Doctors Against Forced Organ Harvesting, reveals China's horrifying practice of killing prisoners of conscience—particularly Falun Gong practitioners—for their organs. He exposes the complicity of global medical institutions and explains how the CCP is influencing international policies to keep this atrocity hidden. [36:52] Border Chaos & Immigration Reform Sheriff Mark Lamb returns to highlight the ongoing crisis at the border and the devastating impact of the Biden administration's open-border policies. He details the influx of military-aged men from hostile nations and the urgent need for Trump's common-sense immigration enforcement.
