Self-compassion reduces our feelings of shame and self-doubt. We explore a practice to help quiet our inner critic with kindness.Summary: What does your inner critic sound like? Many of us carry echoes of past misunderstandings, pressures, or expectations. Voices that show up as shame, self-judgment, or the belief that we're not doing enough. This episode explores a self-compassionate writing practice that helps interrupt those patterns by noticing how we talk to ourselves and learning to respond with more kindness. How To Do This Practice: Choose something you feel ashamed about or critical of: Pick a moment or pattern that brings up self-blame, embarrassment, or disappointment. It doesn't need to be huge, just something that regularly activates your inner critic. Describe the situation honestly and without judgment: Write down what happened and how it made you feel. Let the tone be neutral, like you're simply acknowledging what's true. No harsh labels, no minimizing. Imagine someone who loves you speaking to you: This could be a close friend, mentor, future self, or the voice you'd naturally use when comforting someone you care about. Let that tone guide the rest of the letter. Write to yourself with compassion, acceptance, and understanding: Recognize the difficulty, normalize the feelings, offer reassurance and warmth, acknowledge your strengths and intentions. Treat yourself the way you'd treat someone who came to you hurting. Reframe your struggle in a kinder, more accurate way: Gently question the harsh story you usually tell yourself. Identify what was actually happening beneath the shame— survival instincts, past patterns, symptoms, fear, or overwhelm. Offer yourself a more truthful, generous narrative. Set the letter aside then come back and read it: After a little time (an hour or a day), return to what you wrote. Notice how it feels to receive your own compassion. Let the warmth land. Over time, rereading and rewriting letters like this can shift your inner voice toward kindness and authenticity. This week! Candace The Magnificent, Liv Kennedy and Jeremy Cobb are joined by streamer, activist and incredible GM...Nikatine. We dive into her origin story and journey into all things nerdy, a wildly creative beginning sparked by her dad building a computer, and the early games that unlocked her imagination, from The Sims to StarCraft. The conversation then shifts into her path through streaming and her deep love of TTRPGs, which ultimately led to the creation of Issliss and the launch of Fablescraps as a TTRPG production studio. Nikatine discusses crafting Issliss from the ground up, how original concepts were able to hit the ground running, and how a deep passion for world-building allows the exploration of anxiety, fear, and the things that are truly terrifying, transforming those emotions into powerful creative fuel. The Halflings also discuss how Nikatine consistently shows up to represent and advocate for individual cultures and perspectives, and how themes of alienation and the search for belonging resonate strongly through her work, drawn from her own lived experiences. The episode concludes with two incredible Tales From the Table from Issliss...both of which amazingly feature our very own Candace! I'm seeing and having recently are about some significant challenges of upper limits that are hitting a health issue. It reminds me of a story of a client, kind of what I call my way back machine, more than 10 years ago, and this beautiful soul came to me. She had a job and she really just wanted more and things to work better and her life to get on track. And as we continued to work through the energetic container limits, the mental limits, the emotional limits, the relationship limits, there were a lot of these limits. And as we worked through these in very bizarre ways she would hit another level and her body would have a fit and her body would get sick. Know what I'm talking about? It became we got her from $150,000 a year income. I think the next level was $600,000 a year. And she wanted to go and move to another company and the other company was giving her more responsibility. And okay, so we worked through that, that was amazing. She went to the other company, she did a few things and thought oh god I got to go back to this other founder. She and I have a rhythm. And so she goes back to this other company and she hit another health limit and this other health limit got bigger and more compounded. One of the reasons it got more compounded is because she was going to take more of a leadership role. She was going to need to use different parts of herself, learn to be someone different physically, energetically, emotionally, and especially out into the community. And it's not like she wasn't up for the task. It was her inner voice, upper limits that are not so loud. We have inner voice upper limits that often stop us. I mean, I can tell you tons of mine. I've told you a bunch of those in previous episodes. But hers was really an unknown. It was unknown because it was such a foreign concept to get such big numbers. And so the next level that was going to get hit was about $2 million. And it was based upon we helped her with a new sales methodology and we helped her have a new type of conversation with this entrepreneur. And so she ended up getting some piece of the company in a partnership role and it was a very unique perspective based upon my history of helping companies grow and get sold. I was helping the employee inside of the company help the entrepreneur grow the business. So that's called an intrapreneur. Anyway, the resilience that we were helping her get on track with was no matter where she went financially, physically, mentally, and relationally, because relationships broke during that time, we were going to get to that next level. Long story short, we got her to a buyout, meaning she got to be part owner of that company, and that company got sold for about 10 or 11 million. Her part was 10 or 11 million. The company got sold for a couple hundred million. The thing that is important to acknowledge here for you is where are you not being resilient and you are having inner upper limits that you don't know you're hitting. Most times people hit those inner upper limits when it comes to money and it comes to health and that's a whole way that it needs to be new, rebirthed, reborn, reset and reignited. So what are your upper limits that you're not aware of that you keep hitting and maybe falling back to? Comment below and subscribe, like, share, and do all those really cool things. Sinking into the church pew, I close my eyes, allowing myself to relax. Christmas hymns filter around parishioners as more enter the warm room. Fatigue washes over me as I wait for the Christmas service to start. The previous month was full of Christmas-time activities, lights, parties, and pageants. The seasonal hustle and bustle left me with little time to rest, my heart anxious over plans and the Christmas holiday. As the lights dim, the focus switches to the manger scene. Jesus Christ, born in a manger, died on the cross for our sins. Emmanuel—God with us. Hope was born in human form. "For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government will be upon His shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace" (Isaiah 9:6). Over the centuries, Christians have turned toward Jesus with hope and assurance of heaven. "The name Immanuel encapsulates the heart of the Christian message: that God, in His infinite love and mercy, chose to dwell among His people through Jesus Christ. This profound truth continues to inspire and sustain believers, affirming the reality of God's presence in their lives" (BibleHub.com). The hope of Emmanuel takes us beyond Christmas. For believers, that hope leads to eternity and resting forever with God in Heaven. A forever reprieve from the weariness felt here on earth. However, as you celebrate the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ this Advent, you can also celebrate his saving grace and rest in him. You can look forward to eternal rest while enjoying rest here on earth, right here and now. God's word tells us to rest. God provided a pattern to follow as he rested on the seventh day after six days of work. Genesis 2:2-3 says, "And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation." In the same way, he reminds us to do the same. Advent time is a great time to start resting and taking time to enjoy what God's given. He tells us that he provides rest for our weary hearts. Exodus 33:14 says, And the LORD answered (Moses), 'My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest." Matthew 11:28-30 continues this same theme of spiritual rest. It says, "Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light." Bible Hub study "Rest here is not merely physical but spiritual, offering peace and relief from the guilt and power of sin. This promise connects to the Sabbath rest in Genesis 2:2-3, symbolizing completion and satisfaction in God. Jesus fulfills the prophetic rest promised in the Old Testament, such as in Jeremiah 6:16, where the ancient paths lead to rest for the soul. This rest is a type of the eternal rest believers will experience in Christ (Hebrews 4:9-10)." The choir files into the church as the congregation rises. My anxiety lessens as I listen to the voices around me rising with the choir, still seated. "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel. Rejoice." I rise to join those around me, my voice lifting up the truth of the season. Come, Lord, come and give me rest. Help me rejoice in your birth this Christmas. Prayer Dear Lord, thank you for your gift of rest. Please help me accept that gift and enjoy this Christmas season. Remind me of your open invitation when I'm feeling weary. Amen. Other Ways to Prepare this Christmas Season As we let these truths about Christmas penetrate our hearts, we can sit and dwell on the truth. We can sit and dwell on the fact that God is with us and that he wants to give us rest. One practical way that you can. Just sit and dwell on what God has for you this Christmas and release some of the anxiety, the overwhelm, and the panic over this Christmas season is to go through the workshop, Pen Your Way to Peace. Pen Your Way to Peace is a workshop that my friend Carrie and I did two years ago, where it's 75 minutes of working through and praying through things that steal your joy, things that cause negative emotions, and maybe even bring up drama. We want to help you work through these things. We are offering this workshop in a way that you can sit, you can work through the journal questions that Carrie, as a spiritual director, has provided for the workshop. And then one of the other things that we know causes chaos, causes overwhelm, and frankly doesn't make our hearts feel at rest is not planning. So with me, you will sit and work through plans, work through what you have, your boundaries, what are things you're saying yes to this holiday season, and what you're saying no to this holiday season. You join Pen Your Way to Peace so you can prepare your mind, your heart, and your calendar for the season of Christ's birth. Click here to work at your own pace. Basado en: Stephen O. #SmallBusiness #RestaurantBusiness #DeliveryApps #BusinessBuying #Entrepreneurship **** This week, I'm diving into a big question: Do delivery apps actually destroy restaurants? In this Christmas episode, I'm sharing two of our family's favorite faith-centered traditions (that are simple to execute on and have brought a lot of sweetness and meaning into our December). With little ones at home, I've learned that the best traditions don't need to be complicated to make a big impact, and these are ones my kids look forward to all year long.To see pictures of our family traditions, make sure to check out the blog post for this week's episode: https://elizabethmccravy.com/325 I talk about how these traditions started for us, what they've looked like with kids at different ages, and why they've become such a grounding part of our holiday season. I also share a new rhythm we're adding this year as we head into Advent (something I've tried versions of in the past but am finally ready to jump into more intentionally). If you're looking for faith-centered ideas that feel doable, gentle, and meaningful (especially with toddlers or preschoolers), I think you'll enjoy this one. And if you try any of these traditions in your own home, I'd love to hear how they unfold for you.Other Christmas episodes to tune in to over the holiday season:Episode 297: How to Plan for Christmas to Avoid the OverwhelmEpisode 296: 7 Christmas Tradition Ideas for the Whole Family (+ How to Bring Jesus into Your Home for the Holiday/Advent Season) Episode 191: How to Actually REST This Christmas Season as a Business Owner (Taking Time Off, Holiday Bucketlists, and Business Dreaming)Links Mentioned:Read the full shownotes: https://elizabethmccravy.com/325 Sally Clarkson's Blog:https://sallyclarkson.com/blog/2021/12/19/shepherds-meal-written-on-our-heartsJesus Storybook Bible Advent signup: https://pages.faithgateway.com/jesus-storybook-bible-advent-calendar-printable-free-registration/ Jesus Storybook Bible: https://amzn.to/4pa02oBWandering Wisemen blog: https://www.looktohimandberadiant.com/2015/01/wandering-wise-men-part-1.htmlShop our Showit Website Templates: https://elizabethmccravy.com/shop Join me inside Booked Out Designer: https://elizabethmccravy.com/bod Sign up for the Podcast Success Blueprint: https://elizabethmccravy.com/psb Connect with Elizabeth on Instagram: https://instagram.com/elizabethmccravy Over my 9 years of business, I have learned some financial skills the hard way and a few years ago, I developed an an 8 step process I go through at the end of each month. Here's what a perfect day in Hollywood Studios looks like! Morning: Rope Drop Energy & Star Wars DreamsIf you arrive at rope drop, you'll find excitement buzzing through the crowd. The sun is barely up, but everyone is already strategizing. For many, the first mission of the day is navigating Batuu.I headed straight to Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge, where the sounds of droids and starships fill the air. There's nothing quite like wandering the market stalls as the land wakes up. I hopped in line for Rise of the Resistance, which—no matter how many times you've ridden—is jaw-droppingly immersive. From the First Order Star Destroyer hangar to the runaway escape pod, it's more than a ride; it's a cinematic moment you get to live. Then it was time for a little friendly competition on Smugglers Run. I'm not saying I was the best pilot the Millennium Falcon has ever seen, but I did manage to avoid crashing into anything major.Late Morning: Toy Story Fun & NostalgiaFrom the rugged outpost of Batuu, I strolled into the colorful world of Toy Story Land. Giant building blocks, oversized toy footprints, and Slinky Dog whizzing by—everything here feels like Saturday morning nostalgia.Slinky Dog Dash is the perfect family coaster: smooth, joyful, fast enough to thrill but still full of charm. Afterward, Toy Story Mania offered a chance to test my aim. I walked away with slightly sore arms and enormous pride at beating my own high score.Lunch: A Break on Sunset BoulevardFor lunch, I wandered to Sunset Boulevard, grabbing a quick bite under the palm trees. Street performers were out, adding a little showbiz sparkle to the day. If you're hungry and in a rush, the snack options here are ideal—plus, there's always the temptation of a Mickey pretzel.Afternoon: Thrills, Shows & A Touch of Disney MagicYou can't visit Hollywood Studios without feeling that mix of excitement and dread as you approach The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror. The eerie music, the flickering marquees, the feeling that the building is watching you—it's chilling in the best way. The drop sequence? Still one of the most delightfully unpredictable thrills in all of Walt Disney World.Next door, Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith delivers a lightning-fast launch that sends you straight into a whirlwind of neon. If you love coasters, this is one of those rides that sticks with you.Needing a breather afterward, I caught a showing of For the First Time in Forever: A Frozen Sing-Along Celebration. There's nothing quite like watching adults and kids alike belt out “Let It Go” with absolutely no shame. The humor and improv from the royal historians make this show a must-see.Evening: Pixar Place, Characters & Golden Hour MagicAs the sun dipped lower, I wandered around Pixar Place, where character meet-and-greets and playful photo ops made for perfect golden-hour memories. Hollywood Studios takes on a special glow in the evening—neon lights flicker to life, and the park feels cinematic in a whole new way.Dinner at Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo hit the spot: creative dishes with that perfect Galaxy's Edge theming.Night: An Epic FinaleTo end the day, I found a spot for Fantasmic!, the iconic nighttime spectacular. Watching Sorcerer Mickey battle classic Disney villains while fountains, projections, and fireworks dance across the water is the perfect emotional wrap-up to the adventure. As the final burst of fireworks faded, I walked out with tired feet, a happily aching smile, and that warm, glowing feeling Disney seems to conjure so effortlessly.Final ThoughtsA day at Hollywood Studios is more than a park visit—it's stepping into your favorite movies, embracing nostalgia, chasing thrills, and soaking up wonderfully crafted storytelling from morning to night. Whether you're a Star Wars fan, a Pixar lover, a thrill-seeker, or just someone who appreciates Disney magic, Hollywood Studios delivers an unforgettable experience.

Game theory is a way of quantitatively describing what happens any time one thing interacts with another thing, when both things have goals and potential rewards. That's a pretty broad class of interesting events, so it is unsurprising that game theory is a useful way of thinking about everything from international relations to the evolution of peacock feathers. I talk with philosopher Kevin Zollman about what game theory is and how it gets used in biology and human interactions. We discuss how thinking in game-theoretic terms can help understand the origin of meaning and intentionality in human language.Blog post with transcript: https://www.preposterousuniverse.com/podcast/2025/12/01/337-kevin-zollman-on-game-theory-signals-and-meaning/Support Mindscape on Patreon.Kevin Zollman received his Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of California, Irvine.
