Teaching in Nursing B is a core course for students in the Faculty of Nursing & Allied Health Sciences, Open University Malaysia (OUM). This course is for students enrolled in the Bachelor of Nursing Sciences (Hons) programme in OUM.
Episode 3 focuses on the principles of clinical teaching that includes the preceding assessment of learning needs of the learners - patients and their family members, students and staff. Preparation and planning for a clinical teaching is also highlighted prior to which teaching by role modelling is discussed. Finally, the benefits of giving and receiving effective feedback after each clinical session are mentioned.
Episode 6 provides students with an example of a basic lesson plan model followed by sufficient examples of lesson plans which is suitable for teaching theory/knowledge and practical/skill based subjects.
Episode 7 discusses all aspects of micro-teaching with major focus on different micro-teaching skills which will help in facilitating students during their compulsory micro-teaching session. This segment also incorporates the different types of audio-visual aids that can be utilised for effective teaching. The final part highlights the qualities of a good teacher.
Episode 1 gives an introduction on the dimensions of educational process in nursing. The teaching roles of a nurse particularly in the clinical setting are discussed with additional input on the characteristics of learners in the clinical area. The final part of this topic includes the description of the conditions and environment for learning in the clinical area.
Episode 2 discusses the curriculum design and development in nursing education. The stages of curriculum design is discussed systematically so that students will be able to make future planning of a curriculum for a nursing or allied health sciences programme.
Episode 4 initiates the preparing of clinical teaching sessions with identifying the learning needs of patients and their family members. Prior to setting learning objectives, the students are provided with information of Bloom's Taxonomy of Learning Domains.
Episode 5 explores on the various methods of clinical teaching which includes ward/nursing rounds, role play, mentoring, and learning log/diary to name a few. Comprehensive features on bedside teaching will help students to improve their performance in conducting this method of teaching in their own clinical settings. Preceding that section, the teaching-learning process is demonstrated.
