Two young people sitting down for an old talk about any and everything around us. Ranging from our culture and lives back home, in Barbados a small island in the Caribbean. To all the new and exciting experiences we have encountered since living in Canada.
Welcome to this week’s old talk where you hosts discuss the current state of social media and what it has evolved into. Taking a look at the hyper-accessibility provided by these platforms and the difficulty one faces with setting clear distinctions and protecting your space. The various viral challenges of the past and current ones are discussed with a particular notice on how these have transformed. There is a key point that remains constant and maybe even more relevant given WFH and lockdowns. That is the feeling of being a part of a greater social movement. Humans are inherently social creatures and social media by design now enables much more far-reaching exposure. How do you navigate this and do you protect your personal space?
It’s a new week and your hosts are back looking at whether the trip to Canada is ‘worth it’. Spoiler alert this definitely is not a simple yes or no, as so many different factors can determine what your answer may be. Throughout this talk, a lot of those different factors are assessed and your hosts highlight the benefits they saw in making this move. More than ever this is an ongoing conversation and so much more could be said, would you like to see a part 2?
It's been a long messy week since you last heard from your hosts. This is a shorter old talk covering where they're at currently in life and the differences between their career industries.
Welcome back to this week’s old talk, news has become even more 'in your face’ over the last year, your hosts discuss a hot topic of a less intense variety. Moving from one trending topic to a trending social media app, the invite-only Clubhouse is next to be discussed with its different take on how social media can present itself. Keep an eye out for a tyfaot cameo in a Clubhouse near you, sooner than you might think! The discussion then ends on the concept of preferred names and their widespread utilization in Canada. Have you ever heard the concept applied and especially in a formal setting? Also on a totally not spurred on by a random monologue by Neil, do you believe life would be more simple as a fish?
Take a look at what your hosts have been up to since being freed from their quarantine. Not being stuck at home means a more formal return to their usual schedule, with Neil returning to work & Abriana challenged with the difficult question, does she even want to leave home, now that she’s allowed to! This shift in routine brings with it a range of topics from ‘island time’, nonchalant behavior, (Neil’s) thoughts on vaccines, and another covid test!
Your hosts are back with the first “old talk'' of 2021 and the focus for this week is all about catching up, “how have you all been?”. A lot has happened in the last few weeks and there are so many things that have happened in that time. For now, though this episode is all about a quick recap with the juicier details being saved for later! This old talk looks at us being in quarantine--again, national pauses, avoiding supermarkets, and pricey mandatory hotel stays!

Examining what they’ve seen growing up in a society that has gender divisions, your hosts look into how this presents itself and how it has this impacted them. Do they have any plans of following or breaking away from this societal norm? Does a society like this lend itself to creating privilege or encouraging how we behave or what skills we are predisposed to discovering ? They also ask the very relevant question “are men fearful of women in power ?” your hosts: neil. (@nothingwas_thesame) abriana. This week’s installment of TYFAOT takes a look at the experience of both your hosts have had in Barbados born from racism, colorism & the like. They take a look at how social institutions used to impart acceptable norms serve to further perpetuate beliefs that subtly acclimatize us to this old age way of thinking. They also discuss nepotism & the inequalities within society mirroring those in North America even if the population is predominantly ‘Black’. your hosts: neil. (@nothingwas_thesame) abriana. In this week’s discussion your hosts take a look at cultural appropriation and the intersection between this & cultural appreciation. ‘Black’ culture has become synonymous with popular culture and as such it is being interacted with by those who may not identify as ‘Black’. They also discuss how we define culture and the importance of persons not abusing this culture. While also acknowledging that inherently a city or society’s culture will be impacted by those living within & cultural retention does not mean we should be against cultural diversity. your hosts: neil.
