Hybrid work arrangements were once widely seen as the future of work, especially after the Covid-19 pandemic upended the daily grind we were used to. Synopsis: Join Natasha Ann Zachariah at The Usual Place every Thursday as she unpacks the latest current affairs with guests. Now, some businesses and employers appear to be changing course. Last week, the National University of Singapore raised eyebrows when it was reported that all full-time staff were required to work from the office five days a week, starting Oct 1. The move follows similar return-to-office mandates by big companies, both in Singapore and abroad, including Grab and Amazon. The discussion over where work should happen has been going on since the pandemic. However, if staff are pushing back on a full return, why do some employers still insist on moving ahead with these mandates? If returning to the office becomes a requirement, how should the workplace accommodate different work styles? In this episode of The Usual Place, I spoke with: Ives Tay, a learning and development consultant who has experience with adult education, training quality assurance and workforce development, and Nicole Chua, director in workplace consulting and People Strategy Lead in Asia-Pacific for global real estate services company JLL Highlights (click/tap above): 6:57 We can be productive in the office - and at home 9:12 WFH allows workers to break their day into focused blocks 13:52 Have the courage to speak with managers about policies 18:07 Are some ruining WFH for the rest? 19:45 Employees should be transparent about their movements 22:57 Government should address tensions over flexible work arrangements 29:31 Ensuring the WFH benefits remain 31:53 Is WFH short-changing fresh graduates? 35:27 Consequences for employers enforcing RTO measures Host: Natasha Ann Zachariah (natashaz@sph.com.sg) Read Natasha’s articles: https://str.sg/iSXm Follow Natasha on her IG account and DM her your thoughts on this topic: https://www.instagram.com/theusualplacepodcast Follow Natasha on LinkedIn: https://str.sg/v6DN Filmed by: Studio+65 Edited by: Eden Soh, Teo Tong Kai and Chen Junyi Executive producers: Danson Cheong, Elizabeth Khor & Ernest Luis Editorial producer: Lynda Hong Follow The Usual Place Podcast and get notified for new episode drops every Thursday: Channel: https://str.sg/5nfm Apple Podcasts: https://str.sg/9ijX Spotify: https://str.sg/cd2P YouTube: https://str.sg/theusualplacepodcast Feedback to: podcast@sph.com.sg SPH Awedio app: https://www.awedio.sg --- Follow more ST podcast channels: All-in-one ST Podcasts channel: https://str.sg/wvz7 Get more updates: http://str.sg/stpodcasts The Usual Place Podcast YouTube: https://str.sg/4Vwsa --- Get The Straits Times app, which has a dedicated podcast player section: The App Store: https://str.sg/icyB Google Play: https://str.sg/icyX -- #tup #tuptrSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Work-from-home habits can quietly fuel emotional eating and self-sabotage—especially when fear, stress, and constant multitasking keep the body stuck in “fight or flight.” Karie Cassell, a dietitian and bestselling author of The Domino Diet, shares how her integrative approach—rooted in nutrition, alternative medicine, and life coaching—helps people reset their relationship with food. Drawing on personal experience and decades in wellness, Karie breaks down why breath and mindset drive digestion, how to spot stress triggers, and her PAUSE method (pause and breathe, be aware, uni-task, slow down, enjoy with gratitude) to turn chaotic WFH routines into calm, conscious choices. She connects cravings to broader patterns like scrolling and spending, explains the “domino” chain from thoughts to results, and shows how aligning with what you love creates lasting, healthy habits.Love the show? Mike's Minute: Here's the truth on working from home

The Mike Hosking Breakfast

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 12, 2025 1:45 Transcription Available

Hasn't working from home become funny? Seek have produced a thing called Money Matters, and they look at work-life balance. Actually, hasn't that become a thing as well – work-life balance. I can't place it exactly, but it seems like a Covid thing. The world changed and so did we. Working hard is now so last year, or so last decade. We all long for work-life balance with a good sprinkling of mental health days. But working from home is a scam because according to Money Matters if you got a pay rise you would go back to the office quick as you like. So is it about work-life balance or is it about money? Everything is about money. We just like to pretend it isn't. You feel more virtuous if you pretend it isn't about money. But Money Matters spills the truth. Working from home is easier, we save on the commute, you claim you are more productive, blah blah blah. "Hey, how about 20% more?" Then you're out of there. We would work more hours for more money, we would take on an increased workload for more money, and we would commute further for more money. There isn't much we wouldn't do for more money. The work from home thing, by the way, is funny because before Covid there was virtually no such thing. The idea that you could invent a thing and then having invented it, because we were all locked down anyway, turn it into a permanent thing that could only be broken by a pay rise is the ultimate in farce. It's an insight into how quickly a habit can form if it suits you. Anyway, the only other thing that can make us blow up our precious work-life balance is more time off. But it still doesn't beat money. It's why lotto is popular I guess – money solves everything. Do we value work-life balance? My word we do. But do we value it more than money? Don't make me laugh. After a summer of probably saying yes to too many things and feeling exhausted, I realized I needed to be reminded of my own advice to keep things simple with less stress.  If you know me at all, which you probably know me pretty well if you have listened to any amount of podcasts here, but I'm sure you know I like to do all the things, I love to learn and sometimes that comes with getting too much on my plate.   If you want to reduce some of your mental load & enjoy a slow and intentional life, the first step is to create it by centering your life around what is important to you.  For me, it is my faith, family, and time for being present.  To me, time is our precious commodity and I don't want to get to the end of life and wish I would have done things differently.  Depending on what season you are in, living intentionally may look different than slow living, but you have to know what you really want life to look like and make a plan so you can stop spiraling out of control and feel like you are going backwards.   Next, you need to start saying no to some of what you are doing.  If you are saying yes to please others or just because you think you are supposed to do something, you will burn out fast.  I remember when my kids were in elementary school, I thought that I should volunteer just because I stayed at home (because most people done understand what WFH moms do!), but I whenever it came to going, I just dreaded it because I had so many other things I needed to do.  I have always had side businesses as I'm not someone that ever sits around, so I have to plan my time carefully.   I have learned to say, thanks for thinking of me, but right now I am unable to …..whatever it is.  You don't have to say any more or try to make up excuses.  Just imaging what all the things you will be able to say yes to because of the no's you had to tell people!   And the last way you can lessen your mental load is to declutter.  There is a direct correlation with mental stress and clutter, so make sure you are clearing spaces in your home.  Since we have moved into our home 2 years ago, we have done so mych outside, but I still have totes with my hobbies and it bothers me everytime i see those totes because it is something I just haven't had a chance to get to yet.  As my business has grown, it is something that got put on the back burner!  I know when I have clutter on the counter or around our home, it makes such a difference in how stressed I am.  If you do 1 thing today, start with clearing off your cupboard and getting the dishes done every night.  After a week or 2 add in another thing and try to clear your space you are in most of the time first.  You will wake up feeling much better when you go to make your coffee and don't have the stress of the mess hanging over your head.     I want you to start implementing this right away and let me know how it goes for you!     Remember Keep it simple and have a great week!    Love ya friend! As usual, AI slop shownotes for anyone who wants to read them. Enjoy! In this packed episode of The Two Jacks, Jack the Insider and Hong Kong Jack cut through a huge week in politics, policy, and sport. They kick off with life on the bike lanes and the four‑day work week debate before diving into Australia's productivity roundtable: where progress might actually come from, why energy costs and regulation matter most, and how timid politics strangles reform. They spar over tax design, housing, stamp duty, and the red tape that inflates costs without improving quality. From there, the Jacks range across global flashpoints and US turbulence—Israel–Australia tit-for-tat visas, the Ukraine–Russia talks fallout, the limits of sanctions, and whether the West has the will for long wars. Stateside, they dissect rising US inflation pressures, Congress's stock-trading problem, and the “picking winners” trap in industrial policy. Locally, they tackle the Greens in Tasmania, crime perception vs data, and Australia's defense priorities in a drone-dominated future—before a big sports wrap: AFL finals implications from homophobic slur bans, NRL ladder-shaping clashes, cricket's farewell to Bob Simpson, the Wallabies' breakthrough at Ellis Park, and Sydney's Allianz Stadium turf debacle.Timestamped segments and takeaways 00:00:01 – Cold open, weather and bike lanesBanter on soggy Sydney/Melbourne and bike lane hazards.Takeaway: Urban transport design vs pedestrian safety—light opener that foreshadows policy tradeoffs.00:02:23 – Four‑day work week and productivity roundtableJack the Insider outlines ACTU's four‑day week ask; government quickly cools it.Hong Kong Jack: flexible, case-by-case four‑day arrangements can work well; blanket mandates don't.Notable quote (Hong Kong Jack): “It really is a case-by-case basis… it can be done—it just can't be done across the board.”00:04:26 – Housing, commuting, and productivity dragLong commutes as a hidden productivity killer; WFH rights expanding in Victoria but role-dependent.00:06:47 – AI regulation “light touch”Productivity Commission signals minimal regulation; Jack the Insider flags creator rights concerns.00:07:51 – Where productivity gains might come fromHong Kong Jack: “The two obvious areas to attack are regulation and energy costs.”00:08:17 – Energy transition, prices, and investmentJack the Insider: transition and decades of policy drift drove high prices; grid infrastructure is the bottleneck.Coal vs renewables economics; investment won't return to coal due to horizon risk.00:12:00 – Cutting “red tape”: harmonization and tax settingsFederation frictions; harmonise state regs; stamp duty singled out as a worst tax.Building codes ballooning costs while quality supervision lags.00:14:24 – Build quality crises and supervision gapsMascot/Zetland examples; spate of vacated towers; cheap builds, high prices.00:15:40 – Political capital, timid reform, and election calculusIs Albanese Labor's John Howard—few big-ticket reforms, focus on winning?Take reforms to an election (GST precedent), but reformers often punished at the polls.00:24:45 – Israel–Australia visa spatSimcha Rothman's visa withdrawn; Israel responds by revoking visas for Australians to the Palestinian Authority; both sides flex sovereignty.Notable quote (Hong Kong Jack): “This is just how it works.”00:27:28 – Failed asylum seekers backlog nearing 100kProcessing delays create perverse incentives; most rejected claimants retain work/study rights—encourages low‑merit claims.Enforcement throughput is minimal; backlog self‑feeds.00:32:07 – Tasmania: Greens hold line on stabilityGreens won't back Labor no-confidence; Premier continues; different cultures in Tas vs NSW Greens.00:36:32 – Vale Terence StampPersonal memories; Priscilla role noted; a prickly but great actor.00:38:00 – Ukraine–Russia: Alaska talks flop, semantics vs substanceOptics criticised; ceasefire vs peace semantics; limits of sanctions and Western will.Debate: Can Ukraine regain Crimea/Donbas? One of the "never the twain shall meet" moments that came out of Covid was working from home. Here we are, five years on, and the battle has not only not died, it's intensified. The big gab fest this week in Canberra had the unions asking for a four-day week. Victoria, run by communists, has already stated they will put it into law, even though they can't. Now the obligatory poll shows, guess what, huge numbers of people want the right in law to work from home. On the other side of the equation is the poor old businesses who are pulling their hair out. In places like the UK and America it's got a bit ugly with mandates and threats over returning to the office, or else you're out. The coalition in Australia in the recent campaign ran on a policy of banning work from home for public servants. It went down like a cup of cold sick and was, among other things like nuclear, seen as the reason they lost so badly. That's the trouble with democracy, isn't it? What if the people are wrong? What if the collective doesn't get it and doesn't care? You could run a poll that says, "would you like the Government to pay for a family-sized chocolate bar and a French martini every Friday?” You'd get a good number. What we want and what makes sense don't always align. "But I save time in the commute". Yes, you do and that's good. Because you have to remember not all ideas are 100% bad or good, right or wrong. But on the whole working from home does not suit the employer as much as the employee. Are there exceptions? Of course. But exceptions are not the debate. The debate is the law, and the law applies to everyone. Making it worse is the people who make the laws are given their jobs by the people who do the polls. So, do you suck up to them and give them what they want, or do you do the right thing? Especially when, in this case, the right thing may not be the popular thing.
