Alvin had always been considered a local character. He was reclusive, socially awkward, and frequently misunderstood. His home was cluttered, his mannerisms were unusual, and his relationships with other people were often difficult. Virginia had reportedly lived with Alvin for decades, yet many people in town did not know she existed. The accusation was horrifying, and the circumstances surrounding Virginia's life and death made Alvin an easy person to suspect. But unusual behavior is not proof of murder. That distinction would become the foundation of Poston's defense. “The case was never simply about whether Alvin Ridley was different. It was about whether the evidence proved that he was guilty.” The Attorney Who Took the Case McCracken Poston was no stranger to public pressure. Born and raised in Catoosa County, Georgia, he had strong personal ties to the community where the case unfolded. He graduated from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and later earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Georgia School of Law, where he served as president of his graduating class. A Client Who Would Not Help His Own Defense Preparing for a murder trial is challenging under any circumstances. Defending a client who refuses to reveal essential facts makes the task even more difficult. Alvin was not an easy client. He was reluctant to communicate and often unwilling to provide Poston with information that could help explain his marriage, Virginia's secluded life, and what happened inside the house. Every unanswered question created another obstacle. Why had Virginia remained hidden from public view? Had she been prevented from leaving the house? Why did so few people know the couple was married? What caused her death? And why did Alvin behave in ways that made him appear suspicious, even when he might have been trying to tell the truth? Poston had to look beyond Alvin's personality and search for facts. “A defense attorney cannot rely on appearances, rumors, or community opinion. The obligation is to examine the evidence, even when the client makes that work extraordinarily difficult.” Piece by piece, Poston began reconstructing the story of Alvin and Virginia Ridley. The answers were buried inside medical records, witness testimony, expert analysis, and the enormous amount of material found inside Alvin's cluttered home. Was It a Murder? The home that initially appeared to reinforce the image of a disturbed killer began producing evidence that supported the defense. Poston also made the risky decision to call Alvin to testify. For a defendant in a murder case, taking the witness stand can be dangerous. Prosecutors gain the opportunity to question the accused directly, and a single poorly worded answer can affect how jurors view the entire case. For Alvin, a man who struggled with communication and frequently appeared hostile or evasive, the risk was even greater. Yet his testimony gave jurors an opportunity to see the person behind the rumors. The trial became about more than his strange behavior. It became a search for the truth about Virginia's life, the couple's marriage, and her death. The defense argued that the medical evidence did not support the murder allegation. After hearing the testimony and examining the evidence, the jury acquitted Alvin Ridley of all charges in 1999. He walked out of court a Free man. A Later Diagnosis Flipped Everything Again The acquittal ended the criminal case, but it did not fully explain Alvin Ridley. That explanation would come years later. Alvin was eventually diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. The diagnosis offered a new way to understand many of the traits that had made him appear suspicious, hostile, or impossible to reach. It examines the mystery surrounding Virginia Ridley's death, the challenges of representing Alvin, and the surprising evidence that changed the direction of the case. The symptoms can affect both the mind and body. A person may experience intrusive memories, emotional numbness, hypervigilance, sleep disturbances, anger, avoidance, or an overwhelming sense of danger. Shot in the Face by a Man With a Crossbow. A mental health crisis call became a fight for survival, and one of the most extraordinary chapters in a 23-year law enforcement career. On June 20, 2019, he and a caseworker approached a home believing they were there to help a family in crisis. The Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast social media like their Facebook , Instagram , LinkedIn , Medium and other social media platforms. The request had come from relatives of a 38-year-old man who was reportedly experiencing a mental health emergency. Lee was serving with the local Sheriff's Office mental health division, a role requiring patience, communication, restraint, and the ability to recognize when a troubled person might become dangerous. Nothing about the assignment suggested that Lee would soon be shot in the face by a man with a crossbow. The central fact remains almost impossible to comprehend: “The crossbow bolt struck him just above his left eye.” The impact could have killed him instantly. Instead, the bolt miraculously failed to penetrate his skull. Although seriously injured, Lee stayed in the fight, returned fire with his service weapon, and stopped the threat. The ambush became part of a much larger story involving trauma, faith, career setbacks, family, law enforcement service, and the long road toward redemption. That journey is the foundation of his first book, Scars of the Badge: Faith, Trauma, and Redemption Behind the Thin Blue Line. Lee discussed the attack, his recovery, and the emotional cost of police work as a guest on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast. A Mental Health Call With a Terrifying Outcome Lee and a mental health caseworker responded to the residence after the suspect's family requested help from the sheriff's office mental health division. Calls involving a person in crisis are among the most unpredictable assignments in law enforcement. Officers may encounter someone who is frightened, delusional, suicidal, angry, confused, under the influence, or unable to understand what is happening around them. The person may need urgent treatment while also presenting a danger to relatives, clinicians, responding officers, or himself. The objective is often to slow the encounter down, communicate calmly, and connect the individual with appropriate services. But even a carefully planned response can change without warning. He shares the full story as a guest on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast, available on Apple, Spotify, YouTube, and other major podcast platforms. The interview is also featured across Facebook and Instagram. While Lee and the caseworker were at the property, the 38-year-old suspect emerged from the home armed with a crossbow. He fired at Lee, striking him in the face above the left eye. There was no time for a lengthy assessment. Lee had been ambushed with a weapon capable of causing catastrophic injury or death. Despite the bolt that hit him near his eye, Lee returned fire. His rounds wounded the suspect and neutralized the immediate threat. The event illustrates a reality that is frequently lost in brief News reports and Social Media discussions: officers responding to mental health calls may be attempting to help someone, yet they must also be ready to defend themselves and others in a fraction of a second. “The call began as an effort to help a family. It became a deadly-force encounter in seconds.” Survival Against Extraordinary Odds Lee's survival was remarkable. The crossbow bolt struck just above his left eye but did not penetrate his skull. He received medical treatment and was eventually released from the hospital to continue recovering. The suspect also survived after being airlifted to a regional hospital for treatment of his gunshot wounds. Authorities later arrested him and charged him with first-degree felony aggravated assault on a public servant. Shot in the Face by a Man With a Crossbow. The visible injury may heal while the emotional effects continue in private. That hidden side of survival became one of the driving themes behind Scars of the Badge. Before the Crossbow: A Career-Altering Setback Lee's law enforcement journey was not defined by a straight line of promotions and accomplishments. Before serving with the Hardin County Sheriff's Office, he worked for a university police department. That position ended after a controversy involving his speed while pursuing a vehicle during a traffic stop. Being fired could have ended his police career. It could also have permanently defined the way he viewed himself. Instead, the setback became part of a longer story about mistakes, consequences, perseverance, and second chances. The episode adds important context to Lee's memoir. Scars of the Badge is not presented as the story of a flawless officer. Its power comes from a more honest premise: a badge does not protect the person wearing it from failure, trauma, doubt, or the need for redemption. Dandies Down Under: Breeding with Integrity and Soft Outlines Laura Reeves sits down with Emma Greenway of Jolly Gaze kennels in Victoria, Australia, for an in-depth conversation on the history, breeding and styling of the Dandie Dinmont Terrier. Whether you are a Dandie devotee or a general student of dog history, this episode offers a masterclass in breeding with integrity, mentoring across borders and staying true to the soul of your breed. From Schnauzers to Dandies: The Early Lessons of SportsmanshipEmma began her journey with Miniature Schnauzers, learning the ropes of grooming, showing and standard analysis from a generous mentor who modeled impeccable sportsmanship and grace in defeat.Her early love for the Dandie Dinmont Terrier eventually led her to seek out the breed, though she faced the hurdle of only one active breeder remaining in Australia at the time. "Generosity breeds generosity... we have to work together and we have to share our knowledge." — Emma Greenway The Quest for the Foundation Bitch: Flying to the UKDetermined to acquire a top-tier foundation bitch, Emma traveled to the UK. She studied the breed standard obsessively and chose a bitch at a Birmingham show purely based on her own standard evaluation rather than the judge's placement.Through the generosity of a prominent UK breeder, Emma secured her foundation bitch in 1992 (arriving in Australia in 1993), which she later bred to a respected male acquired from New Zealand expats. A Historian's Eye on the Australian Dandie Legacy Emma recounts the history of Dandie Dinmonts in Australia, noting they were reintroduced in 1969 by Mary McCall (initially a Westie breeder) using imports from the famous Bellmead Kennels.She shares the chilling story of Bellmead maid Peggy Hume, who described the tragic loss of bloodlines during WWII, wheeling down deceased dogs in wheelbarrows due to extreme wartime starvation.Other early Australian pioneers of the breed ultimately drifted away from Dandies because establishing lines and winning against flashy terriers was exceptionally difficult. "Our breed standard says body colour coming well down shoulder and hips gradually, gradually emerging into colour of legs. Not a line. Not a line anywhere. It's a gradual merging. It's natural." — Emma Greenway The Advantage of Isolation: Rejecting the "Cookie-Cutter" RecipeWhile isolation in Australia presented logistical hurdles, Emma credits it as a blessing. Without local handlers or a dominant local show trend to emulate, she was forced to deeply interrogate the breed standard to guide her grooming and breeding choices.She warns against "recipe grooming"—where exhibitors blindly copy winning handlers without understanding why. Interrogating the standard yourself builds a detailed eye for puppies and prevents kennel blindness. Grooming Philosophy: Soft Curves vs. Sharp Lines Coming from Miniature Schnauzers, Emma highlights the stark contrast in grooming: Schnauzers are about sharp, square lines and dramatic skirts.Dandies, by contrast, are defined by soft, natural curves. Emma notes that the standard explicitly calls for the body color to gradually merge into the leg furnishings, rather than displaying a sharp, abrupt line or skirt. "In dandies, we don't have the luxury of throwing everything out. Sometimes you have to go back a bit to go forward a bit. Or sideways." — Emma Greenway Breeding Priorities: Multi-Generational Planning in a "Gene Puddle"Emma describes the reality of breeding a rare breed with highly restricted genetics. Referencing Betty-Anne Stenmark's famous description, she notes that Dandie breeders are working in a "gene puddle" rather than a gene pool, where all living dogs trace back to just two 19th-century stud dogs.Because she is the sole active breeder in her region, Emma must plan 3 to 4 generations ahead to ensure genetic diversity and preserve future combination options.While she predominantly line breeds, she occasionally imports outside lines. Her selection criteria post-outcross focus heavily on keeping puppies that resemble the Jolly Gaze style while selecting for softer, more pet-friendly temperaments. The Hallmarks of a Dandie: Outline, Head and the Power of "Weasley" If summarized, the hallmark of the Dandie Dinmont lies in its outline and headpiece.Emma champions the preservation of the word "Weasley" (present in UK, Canadian, and original standards, but omitted from the US standard in the 1970s), which beautifully captures the breed's distinct curvy silhouette and athletic capability. The Social History of Breed Standards and the Future of Dog Shows Drawing on her PhD research, Emma discusses how modern breed concepts didn't exist before 1820. She notes that while working "utility" drove early types, the 19th-century middle class artificially shaped breed standards to elevate the dogs' social status.Looking ahead, Emma voices concern about the aging community, rising administrative regulations and the lack of young exhibitors learning to groom. She sees Asia's rising middle class as a shining hope for the future of purebred dogs.
